Sentient tree peoples

The nation's army has begun to move North, following the trail left by Lord Vulkan and his army. We have sent 5,000 brave volunteers to hastily intersect the Lavare before they reach Norwany's southern border. Their goal is to get the attention of the lava creatures and bring them back towards The Dominion. The rest of the army is preparing to defend the nation upon their return. The High Groot hopes this battle will end quickly like the last one, but has his doubts.

Manchurian Agent (or Manchurian Candidate) refers to a person brainwashed to commit certain acts or behave a certain way upon hearing an assigned trigger (a word or phrase used to provoke reaction). The term comes from Richard Condon's novel "The Manchurian Candidate" in which one of the characters is brainwashed to become a professional assassin upon hearing a trigger word.

"Got it, Dryad, we'll...eh?"
"Captain," the sonar operator reported, "The submarine has disappeared abruptly. I believe it is executing a rapid dive."
"Why would it do that...? Well, I suppose she has her reasons. Continu–"
"Sir," the radio operator said, "Captain Gryf of the Fan Fan reports a sudden noise almost dead ahead. He believes it to be a submarine going at full power."
Captain Jan smiled to himself. "Tell him we've made contact with it, and tell the group that it's an Isilankan submarine and means no harm."
When that was done, Jan sat back down, and watched the Torch and Stargazer approach steadily. It was almost serene.
The radio operator broke that serenity. "Sir, Captain Gryf wants to speak to you."
Jan walked up to him. "Go ahead. Captain Gryf, you wanted to speak to me?"
"Yes, sir. We've been watching that submarine as well as we can, and it doesn't look like it's executing a normal dive. It's going way too fast and erratically for it to just be a normal dive, and we believe it's executing evasive maneuvers."
"Evasive maneuvers? Why would it do that?"
"I don't know, sir. Hold on a second, if you will."
Jan waited at the station.
"Sir, we've detected another submarine. It's underwater, and we've also briefly detected a torpedo sinking, probably fired from the second submarine. We have reason to believe that the Isilankan submarine was evading that torpedo, but how it could've done that, we don't know."
"That seems a bit circumstantial, Mr. Gryf, but we'll keep an eye out. Thank you."
Jan remembered Elisabeth's message about the Tsindrel-Kalian submarines. The second submarine was probably Tsindrel-Kalian, but why would it fire on the Isilankan submarine? The two countries were at peace, if he remembered correctly. Who else could the submarine belong to? And regardless of that, the circumstances seem too ominous for him to ignore.
"Can we send a message to the Dryad?"
"I can't do it on radio, sir. Even if I try VLF and it works, it won't be able to reply. The best I can do it send it a request to ascend so we can talk to it."
"I don't think she'll do that. What else can we do?"
The sonar operator quipped in, "Permission to speak, sir?"
"Granted. You have an idea?"
"Yes, sir. We could be able to reach it acoustically, and we could pick each other up with hydrophones. However, we do not have the equipment on board this ship. I believe the Sunflower has it, though. It was a dedicated submarine command center back in the day, in case we had to contact a submarine that's dived deep."
"Well, if that'll work, it's worth a shot." Turning to the radar operator, he said, "Tell the Sunflower the location of the Isilankan submarine, and tell it to give it the following message. 'IDC Dryad, are you under fire? We have detected another submarine nearby.' Tell the Dryad it's from me."
"Yes sir."

The XO handed over a message to Elisabeth. he was pale and visibly shaken.
"Commander, we have a message from a surface ship. The Sunflower, a Sumdiranean ship. It's asking us if we are under fire."
No kidding, thought Elisabeth.
"Tell them..." her tone was tense and nervous. "Tell them we're under fire but, I...I think it's a misunderstanding."
"Yes, ma'am."
Elisabeth tried to calm herself.
"Hans, we'll try to contact the Shamaris." She had no idea how Catarina would react but the very fact that they were both still alive proved that she wasn't willing to engage her. Either she was as scared as Elisabeth, or she had understood that her ship wasn't the Kamasira. "Active sonar. One ping only. Send."
Hans nodded and a few seconds later a single beeping sound echoed through the ship.
Everyone stood silent for a minute.
Then a second beeping sound came back towards the Dryad.
Elisabeth sighed in relief.
Catarina was replying.
"Alright, get me the hydrophones working and contact the Shamaris. Make sure the Sunflower is listening as well."
"Yes, commander."
Elisabeth walked towards the sonar operators and watched Hans as he was trying to establish contact with the Tsindrel-Kalian submarine.
"We have a contact. Right...here you go, commander. You're patched through."
Elisabeth took the microphone.
The two submarines were still facing each other, torpedoes locked and ready to fire.
"This is commander Elisabeth Harding from the IDC Dryad to the Tsindrel-Kalian Shmaris-class submarine. We mean no harm. Disengage your torpedoes and we'll do the same. Over."
The answer came back through the hydrophones a few minutes later.
"This is admiral Catarina aboard the Shamaris. Our weapons have been disengaged."
"I hear movement." said Hans. "They're closing their torpedo tubes."
Elisabeth gave the order to do the same.
"Why have you opened fire on us, admiral ?"
"We mistook your submarine for our target. This is an honest mistake, commander. Your sonar signature are oddly similar."
"Tsindrel-Kali is not at war as far as I know. Who were you hunting down, Catarina ?"
"This is a...complicated matter. I' afraid I can't tell you everything here."
"We could meet aboard my ship."
"This is out of the question. I won't discuss this aboard your submarine, commander."
"You think we can keep this a private matter ? Everyone and tjeir mother has heard us now. And there is a Sumdiranean fleet right above our heads. We could meet aboard one of their ships if you want a neutral ground."
"You're probably right, commander. Give me an hour. I'll surface my submarine."

Jan stared with a mixture of disbelief and horror at the Sunflower, as if it could clarify what it just relayed over to him over the radio. 'I need to thank that d*mn captain,' he thought. 'I never asked for this, come on.'
Now was not the time for wishful thinking, however. If he made a wrong move, he could have a diplomatic crisis on his hands. He looked at the radio operator and said, "I need to personally make a message to the fleet. No offense, it's just faster. There's a lot to say."
The radio operator obliged.
"3 Group, this is Captain Jan z Podębrad. As you know, there is an Isilankan submarine in the vicinity. It has just been mistakenly fired upon by a Tsindrel-Kalian submarine, and both submarines are coming to the surface to talk."
He drew a deep breath.
"They will be holding their discussion aboard our ship. The situation appears tense. If something goes wrong, we could be fired on. Please be prepared for that scenario."
He cut off the transmission. "Can you put me through to the Torch and Stargazer as well as the fleet?"
"Done, sir."
"SMV Torch and Stargazer, this is Captain Jan of the SMS Sentinel. Please join our fleet as soon as we can, there is a potentially dangerous situation arising. 3 Group, I want you to form a circle around the civilian ships, I'll be in front, and I want the Fan Fan off my starboard stern, Sunflower off my port stern, the Irretrievable behind Fan Fan and Gull behind Sunflower, and Magnificent to seal off the rear. Out."
Jan watched the fleet start to fall into formation for a minute, then walked over to the intercom and said, "This is the captain. Prepare to admit boarders."

I'm writing that on the spot, there's no real long-term plan. Though you probably won't be fired upon.

No it's fine, that was supposed to describe what Jan was feeling. And, well, from what he's heard, he doesn't know that.

Now I have to try to provoke an attack so I can have a pretext for war
