Welcome to The North Pacific!

Welcome to The North Pacific (TNP)! You might be a new nation to the game or in TNP, and you don't really know what is going on or where to start. Or you may be an experienced member but have several questions regarding some of the activities going on. Whatever the case, we have put together this handbook that you can use to familiarize yourself with the game and TNP, and to make the most out of your time in NationStates (NS).

The handbook has a number of different sections. The index below will help you navigate them. If you have any questions not answered in this handbook, feel free to send a telegram to Delegate Prydania, Minister of Home Affairs Nimarya, or any of the Gameside Advocates and Mentors. They will be glad to help! Additionally, we are always looking to improve this handbook, so let us now if you think something should be added or changed.

Onboarding Checklist

This section covers the very first items you should check off as a newcomer to the game and TNP.

  • Why you should be in TNP: Selecting a region for your nation is one of the most important decisions you will make in the game. We hope you will make TNP your home, and this link explains why. If you have already decided to stay here, that's great!

  • Join the regional forum: The forum is where most government and roleplay activities take place. Registering an account is very easy. You should get yourself an account so that you can check out what's going on and join in on the fun.

  • Join our regional chat: Our Discord server is where our members hang out and chat about the game and real life subjects. You can join and introduce yourself to our community. Additionally, if you have any questions, asking on Discord is the fastest way to get help.

  • Apply for citizenship: Citizenship is your ticket to TNP. As a citizen, you can vote to elect our Delegate and other government officials, hold them accountable, and even run for these positions yourself. All you need to apply is a nation in TNP and an account on the forum.

Ways to Get Involved

Now that you have cleared the basics, you must be looking for things to do. Below are some of the opportunities TNP offers.

  • Get involved in the government: There are many ways to get involved in the government straight away after joining TNP. You can write the regional laws in the Regional Assembly. You can take part in the day-to-day running of the region in the Executive Staff. Or, you can protect TNP at home and abroad in the North Pacific Army.

  • Get involved in the World Assembly: Joining the World Assembly (WA) is one of the best ways to empower your nation, especially in TNP. Thanks to our WA Development Program, as a WA member you can determine international laws, have one of the highest endorsement counts in the entire game, and even win awards!

  • Get involved in RolePlay: We have not one, but two vibrant RolePlay (RP) universes, Eras and Strangereal. Each comes with its own map, chronology, and physics laws. If you commit to being active in RP, you can claim a spot in either universe's map, and join others in weaving stories about your nation and its role in the world.

  • Get involved in trading cards: Our regional cards guild provides many resources you can take advantage of to increase the value of your deck, including several offerings of free cards. As a member of the guild, you can also participate in many other cards-related activities, including themed collections, pull events, and regular publications.

Regional Publications

Through our regional nation, The Northern Light, we post a number of regular regional publications. You can follow them to stay up to speed with what's going on in TNP.

  • The Northern Lights: Produced by the Ministry of Communications, this is our regional newspaper. It includes both general news and op-ed articles about various aspects of TNP and NS.

  • The North Star: Produced by the Ministry of Communications, The North Star informs TNPers of current internal matters and government activities.

  • The Roleplay Reel: Produced by the Ministry of Communications, The Roleplay Reel showcases roleplay works by members of TNP's two RP communities.

  • Press Releases: Produced by the Ministry of Home Affairs, press releases focus on news about the Executive Government, elections, and other regional issues of general interest.

  • Regional Assembly Digest: Produced by the Speaker's Office, the digest focuses on news about the legislative and other business of the Regional Assembly.

  • Information for WA Voters: Produced by the Ministry of WA Affairs, IFVs provide vote recommendations and analysis about all resolutions that reach the floor of the General Assembly or Security Council.

  • Weekly Anthologies: Produced by the Gameside Advocates, this series highlights dispatches produced by TNP nations.

  • Northern Broadcasting Service: Produced by the Ministry of Radio, this is our very own regional radio station in which our broadcasters provide their insight into current events in TNP and Nationstates.

  • WADP Awards: Produced as part of the WADP, this monthly publication presents regional awards to nations that actively participate in the World Assembly.

  • Literary Awards: Produced by the Gameside Advocates, this monthly publication presents regional awards to nations that actively post on the regional RMB or publish dispatches.

  • The Vice Delegate's Weekly Update: Produced by the Vice Delegate, this weekly publication provides updates on the activities of the Security Council.

Other Useful Links

Below are miscellaneous resources useful for all nations.

  • Government index: Get to know your government by using this list of all government officials in TNP. If you have questions or suggestions about any aspect of the regional governance, feel free to send a telegram to the corresponding government official.

  • Law index: This is a compilation of all legal documents currently in force in TNP. This includes our Constitution and Bill of Rights, which form the basis of our government.

  • RMB Guidelines: Posting on the regional message board (RMB) is a great way to socialize and get to know other TNP nations. Just make sure to follow these guidelines.

  • World Assembly voting policy: Look here to learn how TNP's Delegate casts the regional vote on World Assembly resolutions, and how you can help determine that vote.

  • Embassy policy: If you are here as a diplomat from another region, please take a look at our policy for in-game and forum embassies.

  • Recruitment policy: If you are here to recruit for another region, please take a look at our policy on permissible and prohibited types of recruitment.

MAP UPDATE 237

The Current Map as of 8/1/2020

Every update will be two weeks.

If you are interested in submitting a claim, be sure to contact the following nations:

- Lotion Empire
- British Bayonet
- Minuda
- New Trisone

Alliance map as of 6/9/2020

- The map is as large as Earth. So thus, we will not need to expand the map any larger. If the Earth can fit 200 nations and far more, then so can Strangereal.
- If you are banned from the region, you will be removed from the map. No exceptions.
- New territory, such as new islands, and new continents will not be added. We have plenty of unclaimed land, so, its best to make use of it.
- Nations already on the map cannot colonize unclaimed land - Expansions are allowed, but only once, and cannot be overseas expansions, unless in specific scenarios such as being stuck in a island nation.
- Nations cannot claim the water, even as boat/ship nations. We may allow a few exceptions if they can properly RP and handle it well, but its generally not allowed.
- If a nation has not made a roleplay/worldbuilding post in 30 days, unless a cartographer, a moderator, or in a hiatus, they will face removal.
- If a nation is in other RMB RP maps, they will be required to make a SR post every 25 days.
- If a nation is RMB RP banned, they will be removed from the map.
- Hiatuses can be done by RPers, but when requesting for a hiatus, it must include for how long it'll be. 5 month or longer will generally not be allowed, because by that point, you're hording land that belongs to other people. After your hiatus is done, you won't be able to do a hiatus for another month, unless in certain circumstances.
- When deciding your climate/geography, be reasonable. We're not accepting being a healthy Caribbean temperature plains when you're in the north pole.
- No real life nation borders. Borders IRL were caused by decades of wars, geography, and far more. They don't work on a map that's different in Earth.
- As well as the above rule, real life names will not be allowed. Nations that are on the map with real life inspired names were added prior to this ruling.
- Land size calculations from here on out will be your pixel multiplied by 25.40193. (Pixel * 25.40193). To find your pixel amount, just ask a cartographer for it, and we'll provide it. Please make sure to not swarm us with requests.

To submit a claim, TG (Or Telegram) Lotion Empire, or the people listed above. Claims must be up to 30,000 pixels, and while secondary nations are allowed, they can only be claimed up to 15,000 pixels (Unless you give up pixels from your main nation to expand it), and must be made aware with the cartography team. Claims must be reasonable, and must not be entirely massive. No nation will be as large as Friently or Puczovska. Additionally, gaining colonies as part of your beginning claim is prohibited. If you are unhappy with your claim, feel free to request border changes.

Welcome brave leader! You and your people have forged a nation amongst the ancient empires and savages of Tempest Alpha. As your nation expands and developes keep in mind great leader the power of mother nature as she unleashes her fury in natural disasters across the globe. Cooperated with one another, fight against each other, you have the freedom to decide your peoples fate in a world of savages, enemies and friends How will your nation weather the storms and defeat your foes?

Brave the elements of Tempest Alpha and survive the test of time!

Please note Introduction is a WIP

Lost for ideas on what to RP next? Don't worry! As the name suggests Tempest Alpha is full of catastrophic regional disasters that will be sure to spice up any Nationstates Role-play!

"But Lungha, how will we know what natural disasters effect which area of the map?"
Well I'm glad you ask! Tempest Alpha will have a variety of natural disasters ranging from hurricanes and wildfires, to meteoroid showers and Tsunamis chosen randomly using a random number generator, locations will also be chosen randomly using an RNG. Times when a natural disaster will strike will also be determined by an RNG! Affected areas will be shown on the Disaster Map below.

"Wow looks like that could hurt my nation... What if I don't want my nation to get hurt by a huge meteor strike, or flooded by a Tsunami!"
Lungha's response is: Good luck and have fun with it! You can play your nation however you want but wouldn't it be interesting to see how the TA community would respond to your epic story of national survival, your heroic response to those in need? Will this disaster uncover new artifacts of your ancient nation? Will you turn this into an opportunity to invade a weakened enemy? The possibilities are endless!

To add a claim land, TG Lungha

Claiming:
1) No secondary nations
2) No more land will be added to the map*
3) Claims on ice (White colored areas of the map) are not allowed
4) Please be aware that as more nations join starting claims will get smaller
5) You feel like expanding your land? No problem tag me in RP post/factbooks about it, make it detailed and reasonable and your claims may be accepted and added. "Huzzah for colonization and imperialism!"
6) Pixel Limits on claims So entire continents aren't claimed and because I keep getting asked
6.1 New claims with any amount of coastline shall be limited to 40,000 pixels
6.2 New claims with no access to the ocean will receive a bonus 10,000 pixels, equaling a total of 50,000 pixels. Land-locked nations are fun to play too.
*Note: Ice is impassible on foot or wheeled vehicles. Territories surrounded by ice are essentially glaciers, reference Greenland for worldbuilding options and remember to wear sunscreen while skiing.

Requirements for Removal:
1) Nation has ceased to exist,
2) Nation has left the region
3) Nation is banned from Tempest Alpha

Map will be updated periodically at a first come first serve basis please be aware that someone may have already claimed that juicy spot you've been working towards.

Coming soon!

1. Army size:

Armies will only be allowed to be a certain size to ensure the RP remains at least a little bit sane.
*You will need two variables for the equation.

*1. A flat 3%-=============================
*2. Your Roleplay Population (Not the population NS gives you,
the population your nation on the map has) - -

The formula to calculate your nations allowed military size is simple and fast:
- AM=RP*0.03

AM=Allowed Military size
RP=Roleplay Population

Note I:This means allowed in total, not at one time, so no refilling when you lose some.

Note II: Just because you can use 3% of your population does not mean you should.
Remember that this is your whole force, not just fighting men but also support and logistics.

2. Wars and Voiding:

You can only declare war on another person or do something if both agree to it. If you are attacked against your will or if during an ongoing rp people do things that you do not want, you are able to void their actions, aka rendering their actions non-existent.

3. Sovereignty:

No-one can decide matters in someone else's nation for them, you cannot decide how other nation's citizens behave, how they feel or what they do. Neither can you decide if there are rebels in someone else's nation, nor that there are citizens of x nation in that or your nation without that persons consent. Only the nation's owner gets to decide what happens in that nation. (Exceptions are things like peace treaties where one side gets to occupy a nation and gets to torture/enslave the people)

4. Restrictions On Weapons Of Mass Destruction
-
Weapons of Mass Destruction, go for it, excessive use will result in map changes and permanent marks for decreased population for nations, meaning future decrease in overall military. As with all good things moderation is key.

4.1 Nuclear guidelines (permanent)
A nuclear incident occurs once per conflict, let it be one warhead by a single nation or bombs dropped by a coalition or alliance. The first incident of a nuclear incident will result in a 10% decrease in population. The second incident will result in a 25% total decrease in population. And a third will result in a 60% decrease in population. Nukes are fun but be wary the cost of mutually assured destruction.
4.2 Biological weapons (impermanent)
A nation defending against biological agents must determine the effectiveness of the biological agent ranging from a 10-20% decrease in population that will recover fully after two map updates.

5. General Weaponry Restrictions
-
There are several types of weapons that endanger the fun and safety of RP and which will thus be disallowed for usage
These weapons include:
Spaceships/stations with weapons and/or military personnel on them.

Orbital Weapons, Long Range Intercontinental Ballistic Missiles, ICBMs
Lasers, Plasma and other similar weaponry can only be utilized like regular firearms.
*Note: If a weapon not on the list but it is weirdly powerful decide amongst yourselves to best determine if the weapon is voidable.

A big round of applause to Friently for creating the original RP treaty. If you want to know more about the original go to their NS page.

MAP 46

Welcome to the Pegasia, a new world as you may say that houses many ideologies and is home to two resident superpowers; the Imperial Federation(ping AGU and Tonga) and the Republic of Yingguo(Ping me, Krustevland). With the technology year being 1962, it is currently the cold war period presently being butted between the nations of what Yingguo considers as the "Free World" and the Imperial "Monarchist League" with many inbetweens such as Gayogohono/Overhadamine and Accripiditia.

In this world, you decide how your nation acts, reacts and conducts itself on the world stage, so long as it follows our rules on the discord. The cold war rages on by the day, and the nuclear clock continues to roll as the few sit ontop of the many with their masses of power and strength. Come join us today, we need you to fight on the good fight - or your own fight, if you may.

STANDARDS OF REALISM
- No technology beyond 1962, anything beyond that has to be researched with every in real life day representing 3 months of roleplay research to the "First Flight" year.
- No utilizing weapons of mass destruction such as nuclear weapons. Chemical and biological warfare is allowed in defensive conditions(Offensive only if the other player agrees).
- No edgy roleplay posts, maintain the basic rules of the RMB. This would mean no genocides, no things such as re-enacting the holocaust and graphic purges.
- No loopholing, loopholing will be determined by the executives(Ping ESL, Me, AGU and Tonga) and if caught doing so will face OOC and potentially IC reparations
- No joke nations and godmoddy nations. This means you can't have your terrain entirely depend on hard to traverse land and you can only use 3-5% of your population in military.
- No instant defeat military posts. You have to roleplay the movement of your forces and them engaging the enemy before actually attacking or "defeating" them. Always ping opponents.

If you are interested in submitting a claim, be sure to contact the following nations:

-Accipitridia (For Pegasia)
-Tolyakovo (For Hollow Earth)
-The Islands of Tonga

*nations in either one of these types of alliances, can be in the other type of alliance, ie, a nation in a defence alliance can be in a economic alliance.
*Unions count as one nation, so if a defence/military alliance has a union that breaks up and there are more than 8 members(nations) in the alliance, its ok, as long as they dont bring in more people after the break up. note, if this is being exploited, removal of alliance and ban on joining alliances may occur.
*you can not be in an alliance of the same kind, ie, defence/military and economic

1. Claims must be reasonable. The limit is 40k(until update 11) 25k pixels.(so more people can actually claim)
2. We are the same size as planet earth. So no more land. If earth can fit in 200 nations, so can this map.
3. Boreas is unclaimable(the islands around it are), so are water bodies. Simple logic.
4. Expansion is allowed under some circumstances.
5. You could have pixels on Boreas, but they will be considered Research Stations,
and no military or nuclear testing is allowed in them,
and the RS can be removed at Cartographer discretion

*1. A flat 3%-=============================
*2. Your Roleplay Population (Not the population NS gives you,
the population your nation on the map has) - -

The formula to calculate your nations allowed military size is simple and fast:
- AM=RP*0.03

AM=Allowed Military size
RP=Roleplay Population

Pegasia

-The Islands of Tonga

map 10

*nations in either one of these types of alliances, can be in the other type of alliance, ie, a nation in a defence alliance can be in a economic alliance.
*Unions count as one nation, so if a defence/military alliance has a union that breaks up and there are more than 8 members(nations) in the alliance, its ok, as long as they dont bring in more people after the break up. note, if this is being exploited, removal of alliance and ban on joining alliances may occur.
*you can not be in an alliance of the same kind, ie, defence/military and economic

Defence/Military alliances

*Alliance member limit is 15 members

OMAN

The Pact page=dispatch/id=1353474
Monarchist League page=dispatch/id=1372706
The Internationale nation=tolyakovo/detail=factbook/id=1382745

Economic alliances
*the limit doesnt apply to these

Economic & Military/Defence alliances
*limit applies

AMEA
page=dispatch/id=1365437
