The sea is black. Some may not think so, but underneath, deep, deep down, where the faintest glimmer of sunlight cannot be seen from the surface, the sea is darker and colder than the darkest reaches of the deepest, darkest, coldest cave on Strangereal. Yuri had never imagined the ocean floor like this, but here he was, upon the ocean floor, and, peering out the porthole, he could not see a thing.
It was also somehow strangely quiet here, in the deeps. Every sound seemed muffled, snuffed out by invisible earplugs. And, worst of all, it was creepy. It was far creepier than the old medieval sewers in his hometown of Malenbad. Yuri was no coward—being a scientist who dives alone certainly takes courage—but there was something about being on the sea floor that gave him the heebie-jeebies.
He had not, of course, come down here on purpose. Today had begun just like any other day. He had submerged early in the morning, planning to follow a pod of migrating whales. But then the explosion had happened. The sub’s motor was destroyed, and now it had sunk. And here Yuri was, knowing that certain death awaited him if he stepped out. The weight of the water would crush his heart in less than two seconds.
Yuri was very concerned, but he did not panic. He liked being alone, and he had a week’s supply of food and water; but still, he had better get out as soon as possible. And so, activating his radio in the wheelhouse, he spoke into it, hoping someone would hear.
“Help,” he said. “Help. SOS. SOS. Help. I have sunk. Help.”
