The epidemic that could be prevented through vaccination - diphtheria
Diphtheria is spreading quickly and more widely in Inven's northern region than in past years, according to Invenian's health ministry (IMoPE).
Twelve more people in the Northern Territories were found to have contracted the disease yesterday, bringing the total in the region to more than 100, with two states out of eight has been hit, the IMoPE said.
One patient has died because of late detection in the remote area. The area has had not recorded any diphtheria cases in the past 10 years, however, the low vaccination rate has caused the disease to reappear.
The government has quarantined and vaccinated more than 2000 people in two states with diphtheria cases.
Total cases reported this year have quadruple the number in 2019.
IMoPE expressed concern that the disease may be spreading quickly because vaccination rates in the affected areas are very low. About 60% of the two states were vaccinated, and it was as low as 35% in some areas.
Diphtheria is an acute, highly contagious bacterial disease-causing inflammation of the mucous membranes, formation of a false membrane in the throat that hinders breathing and swallowing, and potentially fatal heart and nerve damage by a bacterial toxin in the blood. It was rare in Inven because of immunization. However, a decline in the vaccination rate caused a surge in diphtheria cases.
A coalition of politicians from the Green Party and the Democratic Party proposed to pass a bill which would allow the government to vaccinate everyone forcefully, however, previous attempts of passing this were blocked by conservative politicians.
