Roleplay Post Guide

This dispatch details ways to create, format, style, and improve your roleplay posts. This guide is catered to the roleplay style of The Hole to Hide In, so these rules are not necessarily universal.


Getting an Idea


Deciding what to post about can sometimes be a difficult endeavor. Luckily, there are a number of topics instantly available to any nation participating in the Regional Roleplay.

If you need an idea for a roleplay post, it may be best to simply comb through recent posts from other nations. If they do something noteworthy, or otherwise attract your attention, have your nation comment on the action, as national governments commonly put out statements regarding events that take place outside of its own borders.


The majority of roleplay posts on the RMB either

Respond or comment on the actions of another nation.

Detail an occurrence within your own nation.

If you'd rather detail an occurrence within your own nation, then the exact topic you'll be posting about will be up to you. However, the topic should be something that would conceivably be of international interest, or at least that of your own government. Common internal RP's include;

Elections and/or transitions of power.

Noteworthy criminal activity and/or terrorist activity.

Natural disasters.

Internal conflict, civil wars, protests.

Internal government reports.



Tensing


It's important to ask; "In which time frame should I write?" The answer never definitive, but here is some advice to keep in mind.

Roleplay posts should, as a general rule of thumb, be written in either the past tense, or the present tense. Here's a simple example.

Past Tense

RP: A Response from Candensia

Candensian officials sent a letter thanking Da huaxia, following its gracious offer for an official state visit by Candensian dignitaries.

Present Tense

RP: A Response from Candensia

Candensian officials have sent a letter thanking Da huaxia, following its gracious invitation for an official state visit by Candensian dignitaries.

Avoid the future tense, as it has a tendency to create situational ambiguity regarding actions that have been taken (past tense), or are being taken (present tense), versus actions that will soon be taken. (future tense). Skilled writers are not barred from using this tense, as long as posts are still of a high-quality.



Adding Detail & Improving Quality

Here's where the majority of your brainpower should be spent- adding detail and improving quality. There are many ways to accomplish this, but here are some things you should consider;

Expand your sentences, and make them descriptive and interesting, but ensure they do not drag.

Include differing reports or opinions within your post. Consider retelling the story in a slightly different way to match the opinion of a given speaker.

Ensure your post carries a formal tone, such a tone usually will, intrinsically and by nature, boost the quality of a post.

Make sure your post is not only legal, but also realistic. If a post departs with reality, then all verisimilitude goes out the window, and readers will (subconsciously or otherwise) roll their eyes. Realistic posts bestow credibility upon a writer and capture the collective attentions of readers.

So let's take a look at our RP Post from earlier, and make it better.

RP: A Response from Candensia

An RP Post like this does its job, and is pretty clear, but it's also extremely thin. We can improve this by elaborating and providing context for this post, and we can also make it sound a bit more realistic and less out-of-the-blue. Observe.

RP: A Response from Candensia

Reports coming from government sources indicate that Candensian officials have sent a letter thanking Da huaxia, following its gracious invitation for an official state visit by Candensian dignitaries. This move follows weeks of talks between the two nations, which, as of recently have been experiencing friction as it relates to international trade.

Shortly after rumors of a potential state visit began to fly around Alriora, Minister of Trade Ariana Grant confirmed suspicions and made the following statement on the steps of the trade ministry;

Statement by the Trade Minister

"Trade talks with our counterparts from Da huaxia have been extremely productive and fruitful. Da huaxia remains a vital trade partner of Candensia. It is my belief that this recent invitation for a state visit reinforces the goodwill coming from both sides to resolve our somewhat tense, but entirely healthy trade relationship. It is my hope that such a visit will only strengthen our partnerships as talks continue. Thank you very much."

Specific details regarding the upcoming state visit by Candensian officials to Da huaxia, including the date and venue, are not yet known, but these details are likely to be answered by the Candensian Ministry of Trade, Ministry of Foreign Relations, and the Office of the Monarch as they are decided.

A lot more in-depth, right? An RP Post like this does exactly the same thing as the smaller, original one we started with, but a reader knows far more about the situation, and can make an equally detailed response using it.




Other Considerations


Yep, there's a whole bunch of other stuff anyone writing an RP Post should know about, let's go through some major ones.

First off, context. Context is extremely important, particularly if you are responding to the post of another nation. If no context is provided, it may be extremely difficult for readers to know what your RP post is based off of, or even who you are talking to.


In order to establish context, you should do the following whenever possible.

Quote any relevant posts that give your own post context and clarity.

Tag nations to provide emphasis for your intended audience. If your post is directed at Rumanian States, for example, make sure you tag them (Rumanian States).

Next, some rules regarding pronouns. RP posts should be written from the perspective of your nation, so all in-character (aka RP) posts should comply with the following;

Avoid I, he, she, him, her, etc. You are roleplaying as your nation, so when detailing the actions of your nations as a whole, keep things in the third person, and most definitely not personal. If you allocate a gender to your nation, ensure this gender is consistent and consistently used throughout. If you are RP'ing a specific character within your nation, these pronouns are fine where appropriate.

When detonating possession, avoid his/hers. Use an apostrophe or "their" instead. The explanation for this is the same as the above point.

Next, a favorite: spelling and grammar! Here are some things you should do as it relates to this topic.

Proofread. Make sure everything makes sense, and is coherent.

Check your spelling. Make sure everything in your post is spelled correctly. If you aren't sure of the spelling of a word, your answer is just a google search away.

Check your punctuation. Make sure all of your sentences have punctuation, and are punctuated correctly.

Eliminate run-on sentences. If a sentence just keeps going and going, it's going to tire the reader, consider breaking it up with commas and/or other punctuation.

While this may not be the most exciting of tasks, the effort you put forth here to improve readability will make you appear a lot smarter and intelligent to the reader. You get out exactly as much as you put in.

Finally, one last point, though it may be the most important of all.


Make sure your post is legal according to the RP Rules!

The XY would agree to meet with Queen-Regent Catherine of Icewindia to discuss the situation, and police turtles would be ordered to be on the lookout for a drunken group of mercenaries. In the prisons, the police would not release the mafia members, for they do not want any more violence going on between the Woleve Atralandians and the Icewindians.

Following a meeting between XY and the Sol Invictus, the Imperiums power grids are to be connected to those of Tearth so that surplus energy can be sold cheaply in Tearth. Furthermore, the Imperium will expand Tearth's railroads and highways eastwards. The 23rd Berets have been sent to Tearth to act as guards for the Imperium corporations in the region.

RP: Meeting End

In a meeting between Sol Invictus of Woleve Atraland and the XY, Tearth would connect its power grids to Woleve Atraland, and more highways and railroads would be built connecting the two nations. The XY also allowed Woleve Atraland to send a unit of their soldiers to defend their workers from loose Icewindian mafia members.

Archron empire

RP: The Solidification of Archron within the TNL and ICT

Following the meeting with Sol Invictus of Woleve Atraland, major progress had been made. Archron has formally joined both the TNL and ICT and be partaking assist from the Woleves in Naval designs. The Archians will also be switching to the Tengerinan Mark, replacing the 1,453 year long history of the Arcs importance within the world. Archron has also begun using the former Avani factories to begin its civilian and military production. Signs of Avani have begun to be switched to Archian or Whiskwindian, both mutually intelligible with one another. Mass transportation of the Archian citzens has begun as former Avani homes of the ones who left have either undergone demolition, or are being reused by the people. The Avians that stayed, being all the whiskwindians, was only merely 143 Million. They have begun to move to the Rotalian and Avian lands in search of new homes as the Archians have begun to spread their control.

Reproduction laws have been temporarily been emplaced in order to begin raising the Archian population to where it once was. Now every household has been instructed to have 4 children or more, under the temporary law. Archians had some complaints, but was mostly overlooked with this problem. The Navy began as well, putting its production into overdrive and using the blank check from the Imperium to good use. Concept plans for Carriers and other naval vessels were sent to Atraland as a secondary inspection, wanting a fresh set of eyes.

RP: Expanding Friendships

Tana Celosia invited Minister of Midribbonia Anna Bornova over for tea and future talks of creating friendlier ties. The topics on hand were a migration agreement, trade agreement, and setting up embassies. All parts were positively agreed upon with the future arrangements being finalized in the up coming months. Tana offered for Anna to stay as long as she wished and to personally call upon her in the future stating Anna doesn't need to win her attention in the battle arena.

RP: North Western Rebellion:

In recent months the Goran government has deployed a large number of troops to North Gora around 300,000 additional troops mainly to maintain order and guard government buildings, public areas, and the Goran-Midribbonia Railway. In Goventry pressure has been mounting to root out rebels before they can launch an attack and make an example of them. The Goran Government has issued a plethora of statements condemning the rebels and warning them that their days are numbered. Additionally, security forces across Gora have been put on high alert in the event of a terror attack and several warnings have been issued from the Government promoting public awareness of the “Rebel Threat”. While no one is aware of what the rebels are planning the government is expecting them to act soon.

RP : The Man and The Lion

Rulbeth, Ilimir

The dark halls of the mountain-city of Ilimir are made bright by the gathering of officials from Lentelan and Ceolan. This neutral kingdom was made as the meeting area, Rulbeth was ruled by the Nessics, an underground race descended off the northern Serren. They gladly hosted the conference between the two lords. It was in the proving-grounds they met, a large arena dedicated to hosting battles, festivals, and gladiator duels. They were situated on-top of a crater of a dormant volcano, as wide as a small city district. Rows of tables opposing each other were placed in the middle, one full of festive felic cat-people, the other full of Lentelan human military officials.

Then the two entered its fields, the one whom came first was the Lion, Dux Leirine Kucing. He was dressed in a regal gold-plated armor that flaunted his wealth, standing tall to his associates. His furred paws waved to the spectating Nessic hosts from the sidelines and he then took a sit in the middle table. The second who came was Phatrek Selmundo I Alva, afflicted by a disfiguring disease. His skin is completely covered by steel plates that made no hint of his original form, a statue of a man he was. Leirine towered over Selmundo, comparable to a fully-grown adult to a child. Where the other displayed his immense pride in himself, Selmundo exemplified humbleness, a value that was admired by his vassals.

" Greetings, Dux Leirine. " Selmundo took a seat directly facing his counterpart, taking the first turn in discussions. " I suppose now that I have straightened up my rule, you would face me more seriously? "
" As I have always done before. Greetings Selmundo. " Leirine replied, he didn't dare to ruin the meeting between the two by petty insults as he had done before. " Enough about the formalities, let us discuss about what we came for. "

Leirine sighed, he always hated the holier-than-thou attitude Selmundo possessed. " My forces are amassing arms across the seas, secured a large quantity even from those northern cross-breeds. Ceolan has the support of all the four states of Rorfreth, Hudyaria, Sillisil, and Borsvik. Your aggression will not be tolerated, we have no plan to allow you to continue to pillage our lands. The compliance legions have long extorted our peoples for money, always used it for the great state of Lentelan. All of this needs to end, or else.."

" Or else what? " Selmundo responded angrily " You will kill us? You will put the slaves back behind bars? Why wouldn't you join us, Leirine? We know the reality of living in the Seibalath, it is hellish. Everything we do is for the better future. You know they wouldn't just simply agree to stop tyrannizing their poor subjects, or agree to use technologies of the outside. "
" You are convincing yourself that committing evil acts will help further the cause of good. They are capable of changing themselves, they do not need your so-called 'righteous rule'. "

Selmundo didn't talk any further, he knew that convincing the Dux was a futile task. Both of their associates stood silently glaring one another. It did not need further speech to recognize that the meeting had been concluded before it had even started. Animosity permeates the tense atmosphere. Their Nessic mediators quickly picked up in the change of tones, and intervened to maintain civility. Forward came a Nessic scrivener, appearing like a robed vampire.

" This is going nowhere. My Kuno, Hishorn Melikkazin suggests a non-aggression pact to be established as to avoid the violence that you two nations plan to instill, if none of the nations are willing to accept any compromise. This is the least that could be done, and the violators will be persecuted to the fullest extent by all seven member-states. Now, if you agree, sign this document with your blood on it. "

The scrivener gave out a parchment with the conditions, along with a sharp clean scapel for extracting blood. Without further ado, the two reluctantly cut a small wound on their fingers to sign the deal. It was the classic way of binding agreements, an ageless tradition that the men still held on. None of them shook hands with each other and left the proving-grounds. Time will tell if the peace is to be honored within the Seibalath.

Queen Akulda the propaganda master began to show the desperate and even exaggerated desperate state of the Avians in Frostwindia. Queen Akulda is to also speak to Beakolini and Avian Government in Exile.

Catherine has transferred Stock ownership of Naval Yards in former Avian Land to her daughter Akulda to safeguard. Akulda is very confused on what to do with such a massive Monopolistic Naval Yard that helps to employ Many Whiskwindians.

Sibir meanwhile has taken two SRBM's for Pravda and Catherine's Naval yards within Pravda as well.

With Agreements from The backlighter knightly order it seems the Alliance is about to form. However after hearing rumors of North wanting Independence.... this Betrayal is noted. However Marshall Hemlock agree's to [nation]Torimia[/nation going free on conditions that Military Access be given, Tori Legion of 400,000 Remain under Icewindia as an Expeditionary Force and Mila be placed in charge of Torimia as New Grand Protector.

Well hello everyone here, I have been lurking for quite some time and well here we are. It is nice to meet all of you, From my observations you all are a nice people but also a bit strict with roleplay (Of course no offense) so it will be interesting for me to fit in.

Oh where is my manners- My name is The Outer Union, Honored to meet you. I heard your region via a telegram of a nation after the official closing of my home native region of Thalassia (Semper Thalassia!) And from there my search for a region to call his continuing until the national told me of this region. Looking at one post it seems that this would be following a season-like rule, So I thought of not joining until the next one.

RP Season 2 Preview

Background

Civilization in the Kalranian Solar System continues to expand. The nations of Kalrania, once constantly in upheaval, managed to coalesce into a planetary civilization, with the Kalranian League of Nations taking the lead. Under the governance of the League, and its Secretaries-General, the third planet in the Kalrania system, Durraki, was colonized. The arid world, harsh initially, has been under terraformation continually for decades, with conditions now Kalrania-like, though still resembling a desert, and not ideal. But things changed forever, when the Kalranian colonies on Durraki declared their independence, and set up a planetary government to resist the Kalranian League of Nations, the Durraki Planetary Union. With both planets in uproar, a system-wide conflict looms on the horizon, and control over the entire Kalranian System hangs in the balance.

In the Second Season of the RP, Nations will be allowed to join one of two major factions, these two factions are the Kalranian League of Nations (LoN), and the Durraki Planetary Union (DPU). The Union has several common values and objectives which unite Durraki.

    Unwavering Resistance: The Union wishes to continue resisting the Kalranian League of Nations. To this end it has developed industrial capacity, military might, and and a population devoted to Durrakian independence. While not necessarily promoting conflict outright, the Union opportunistically opposes Kalrania where it can, and stands its ground where it must.

    Durraki Terraformation - The Union and the people of Durraki wish to see their arid home transformed into a garden world. Many in the Union will spare no expense in continuing the project, seeking resources and technology to ensure the job gets done, though this often means taking funds out of the war chest.

    Technological Mastery: The initially harsh conditions of Durraki have fostered large-scale technological innovation, designed to make up for Durraki's handicaps.     Well hello everyone here, I have been lurking for quite some time and well here we are. It is nice to meet all of you, From my observations you all are a nice people but also a bit strict with roleplay (Of course no offense) so it will be interesting for me to fit in.

I heard your region via a telegram of a nation after the official closing of my home native region of Thalassia (Semper Thalassia!) And from there my search for a region to call his continuing until the national told me of this region.     Background

    Civilization in the Kalranian Solar System continues to expand. The nations of Kalrania, once constantly in upheaval, managed to coalesce into a planetary civilization, with the Kalranian League of Nations taking the lead. Under the governance of the League, and its Secretaries-General, the third planet in the Kalrania system, Durraki, was colonized. The arid world, harsh initially, has been under terraformation continually for decades, with conditions now Kalrania-like, though still resembling a desert, and not ideal. But things changed forever, when the Kalranian colonies on Durraki declared their independence, and set up a planetary government to resist the Kalranian League of Nations, the Durraki Planetary Union. With both planets in uproar, a system-wide conflict looms on the horizon, and control over the entire Kalranian System hangs in the balance.

    In the Second Season of the RP, Nations will be allowed to join one of two major factions, these two factions are the Kalranian League of Nations (LoN), and the Durraki Planetary Union (DPU).       Queen Akulda the propaganda master began to show the desperate and even exaggerated desperate state of the Avians in Frostwindia. She began to press for Frostwindia to receive islands to help house the Avians. Of which she pressed for many Islands. Gold Mines begin to help buy food from abroad and heavy encouragement of floating fishing towns and fishing is encouraged.

      Queen Akulda is to also speak to Beakolini and Avian Government in Exile.

      Catherine has transferred Stock ownership of Naval Yards in former Avian Land to her daughter Akulda to safeguard. Akulda is very confused on what to do with such a massive Monopolistic Naval Yard that helps to employ Many Whiskwindians.

      Sibir meanwhile has taken two SRBM's for Pravda and Catherine's Naval yards within Pravda as well.

      RP: Formation of the Icewindian Co-Prosperity Sphere and Inkhaganate leaving.

      With Agreements from The backlighter knightly order it seems the Alliance is about to form. However after hearing rumors of North wanting Independence.... this Betrayal is noted. However Marshall Hemlock agree's to Torimia going free on conditions that Military Access be given, Tori Legion of 400,000 Remain under Icewindia as an Expeditionary Force and Mila be placed in charge of Torimia as New Grand Protector.

      5,000 Avani Amog-US-23 armored vehicles
      15,000 transportation vehicles

      Archron has begun a remodeling and complete overhaul of all the Naval and Air vessels and craft. removing the Avani language from databanks and replacing it with Whiskwindian and Archian translations. However, this does not appease the Archians at all. The Archians have forwarded the results to Woleve Atraland and has deemed a "all hands" needed emergency to bolster their numbers. Once having one of the greatest military in the world, they still valued quality over quantity. Archron has completely scrapped the Naval production in order to mass focus on building armor and jet craft. Archron has requested Woleve Atraland begin creating Archian naval vessels, granting them temporary executive permission to use the Archian naval ports to create their vessels.

      The thought of nationalization of the naval yards and other industries looms over the Isles...

      With the scorn arising from Icewindia and its current Queen, the freeze of trade to the land of snow only gave the corporations disdain for their continued operations to the area. Most had pulled out during the War of Retribution against Blayredeshia following the nuclear incident. Though some had resumed operations mining the uranium out of death mountain. However with the freeze of exports and imports, the corporations organized a full withdrawal and closure of their mining sites as it was no longer profitable in the current political climate.

      The mining corporations also became interested in Tearth's supply of minable natural resources as a new source of income and have petitioned the XY and the current government to opening mining rights to the corporations.

      The new trade route to Woleve Atraland made up for the losses by the frozen trade in Icewindia, something that would later be cancelled in its entirety after the denouncement. Without the route wrapping around the whole continent, oil costs dropped significantly due shipping routes being shortened. Prices for some exports going eastward would also drop a little in response to a decrease in oil prices.

      A protest in several cities in Stolitsa has been seen, largest in Poljada and Injada. They have been protesting for a reform of democracy in Kynthes, a new parliament, and anti-monarchy sentiments have been seen. Several high-profile individuals of the republic have also been seen in these protests. Several individuals have been questioned.

      RP: Subservience

      In these protests, individuals have questioned the independence of the Kynthesine Republic, and other nations not recognizing it. The states who have not recognized the republic had had their flags burned by the Technocrats from an ultranationalist faction. The Republic has also seen several protesters using a different flag from the normal Kynthesine flag, and pins with a symbol on it. These individuals have been blocked by police from entering the Meeting Area of the Councils.
