Kigurasu Yuhabi downs a third cup of his coffee, grimacing at the plastic taste of the poorly made drink. It’s a late night in Mercy, and he struggles to stay awake as he watches the situation of the IRIS satellites above Plaz. “State secrets.” They said; “Nigh undetectable by radar, with the most advanced satellite protection in Valsora.”

“Bullsh*t.” He mutters; “If they’re that safe, why would I have to babysit them?” Gulping down the last dredges of his coffee, he clicks off to the side of the screen, selecting the automatic defenses to be set up. With a groan, he pulls himself out of his chair, walking away as the system quietly hums away, watching the world.

When he returns, the system is blinking red, kanzi across the screen spelling out a clear message;

SUPERSONIC MISSILES INBOUND

“Well damn.” He runs over to the seat, nearly knocking it over as he sits down. Opening the command console, he looks over the situation. Twenty red echelons, maybe more, slowly moving towards the grid of IRIS satellite systems. At this point, moving wouldn’t do. Booting up the defensive systems, he turns on the IR and radar jammers. Fifteen radar decoys are ejected, launched into deep space to prevent the shrapnel from ripping apart the satellite’s fragile systems.

For a few terse seconds, nothing changes, before the computer accepts the commands and begins the adjustments. Ever so slowly the missiles diverge from their paths, as the satellites turn to a new course. As they draw into kinetic interception range, he turns on the automatic defenses of the satellite system. His gut wrenches as the blinking red arrows approach their targets, and then wink out. Three satellites disappear, offline, two more wink red, and begin to make course adjustments to burn up in the atmosphere.

Kigurasu puts down his coffee, letting out a pent up breath he hadn’t realized he’d been holding. Shaking his head, he walks down the hall, to the quarters of the regional manager. A rap on the door, and an exhausted voice replies; “Come in.”

The office is bright, the manager looking to be in the middle of setting up his computer. He looks up, catching Kigurasu’s nervous eyes; “Something the matter?”

“Yes. We had a Plazish attack on the IRIS system, five satellites are down.”

“Ah! I was just about to send a group email to everyone, apparently the satellites over Osterreich were targeted as well. One was destroyed. What was the damage on our end?”

“Three surveillance, we lost the guidance system for Eastern Plazland, and we lost the Rep-GPS.”

“I see. We’ll send a direction to the Hurami base to launch a microsatellite swarm to form a temporary replacement. Thank you for your hard work here.”

“It’s a pleasure sir.”

Koko watches the readouts in confusion. Three fleets, well, maybe four, moving into the Shiro island chains. IRIS, meticulously mapping the surroundings, shows them as red icons, slowly creeping towards the island chain. A wolfish smile slowly grows on her face, as she watches one move towards the base, turning to enter the narrow passage between the islands of the Cult, and the infamous Fubuki Naval Fortress.

“Admiral, the fourth scout group is reporting approximately twenty aircraft, they have their radars and jamming off, but they were caught on IR by sat-436 and confirmed by the patrol boat Marai-34. They appear to be Shavaran.” A man, with sharp black hair and wearing the uniform of the chief intelligence officer, calls out. Koko’s smile widens, a perfect first strike for the task force.

“Call that old miser at Fubuki! We have a few rats coming into our lair, and I think it’s time we saw how their blood looks in the water!” She laughs, and turns to the flight control officers. “Alright, what do we have in the air?”

“Takashi’s squad is up, twenty five interceptors, two Zei electronic assault aircraft, and three helicopters.” A woman reports, watching the aerial readouts from the radars of their picket ships.

“Send them off, and let’s prepare to give the Shavarans a glorious welcoming party!”

High in the sky, a radio crackles; “This is the Fubuki strike fleet to CAP-11, we need an interception of aircraft, approximately fourty, heading to the Shiro island chain. Please ready your strike gorup and prepare for combat. They have no radar to lock onto, so we’ll be linking you to the Shiro OTH radar using IRIS.”

Inside the cockpit, Takashi grins, sliding his joystick to the right as his aircraft bank towards the Shiro island chains. The IRIS icon flashes on his screen, the information of Shiro’s super long ranged radar array beginning to be sent down to the jet. His wingmates fall in behind, roaring towards their targets, mere minutes away from reaching the first islands.

The HUD slowly brings out the forms of his targets, 20 kilometers away, near a cloud bank, and heading into their attack runs on the first naval outpost. Twitching the target lock ever so slightly to compensate for when they would ull out of the run, he opens the release switch for the RYU-11 heat seeking missiles. Without their radars on, they wouldn’t know what hit them. Giving no communication to his wingmates, he flicks the switch.

CLUNK

With that, the first set is off, four missiles, towards the two lead aircraft. Pulling back on the joystick, the aircraft banks, sending Takashi’s gut wrenching downwards. As he pulls towards the cloudbank, the smoke trails of his wingmen’s jets fly past, towards the enemy aircraft. The damage though, is already done, blooms of fire spouting from the military outpost, fading into columns of fire as the attack run levels off. A second tug on the joystick, and his aircraft pivots, azure sky spinning as he prepares the second attack run. Surprise was gone now, but hopefully, they’d be thinned out a bit.

In the bridge of the carrier, Koko watches as the main battle fleet pauses, a sophisticated enemy. They pulled short of the minefield, and now lay in wait outside. A taunt? Koko giggles slightly at the thought, it was an entrancing concept.

Pulling up the IRIS situation maps on the ship’s tactical, display, Koko calls to the crew; “Alright people, here is the situation. The Takashi group is out of the CAP on an interception mission. That leaves our air force ast 80% capacity. However, IRIS is still up, and our opponents have decided to sit outside the group 17 minefield.”

“Now, given the situation, we have the submarines I-19, I-40, and I-34, outside their effective sonar ranges. That gives us two options. We can use IRIS and our type 210 torpedoes to begin placing hits from long range into their cute little escorts. But that will only do as a stopgap.” Koko taps the display. “This is a very large fleet, and Fubuki’s standard missile stocks must be conserved for any Ostarian strike or a second wave. Darlings, I need suggestions for exterminating these insects.”

“Our long range standard missiles and Senji missile batteries will only do for an opening salvo.” A young man, wearing a sharp black uniform, states. “Admiral, I suggest we prepare the first strike, aim for the sensors. While Fubuki has OTH, we have the drop on them in terms of vision. We can get close and use the sea skimmers to take out their fleet in quick order.”

“I like it! We will crush the bugs face to face! Any other ideas?”

There is no reply, and Koko turns. “Well, that’s it. All hands, prepare for action! We’ll have a party tonight!” She taps into the console her orders to the fleet, as the massive bulk of the carrier shudders into motion, the rest of the fleet trailing it like a school of fish by a whale. Grabbing the intercomm, Koko lets out a single call, her voice exhuberant, rushed from adrenaline; “COMBINED FLEET, PREPARE TO SORTIE!”

A moment later, the horizon flashes, as the first wave of standard missiles, 60 in all, rise into the air, guided by the invisible threads of the Charitian military network. The carriers roar with the sounds of jet engines starting, as the occupents of the four carriers prepare to join their comrades in the air. The battle for Fubuki had begun.

----~----
The shiro island chain is home to Fubuki naval base, the mightiest of a twenty fortress system that sprawls through the heart of the Empire’s logistics. Sixty thousand men reside there, Two hundred fifty aircraft nestled amoung the island chains of the fortress system. The pride of the empire, surrounded by oceans of smart mines, layer upon layer of spotting, a sophisticated OTH system that sprawls across acres of land, and a mighty bunker system holding the stockpiles leftover from a mightier time in the empire. If there was ever a symbol of the old imperial might, this was it. And now, that heart of imperial power was threatened. Built on the crushed ruins of the former coalition of carribean islands, on the crushed rubble of their former capitol, this was a symbol of imperial power to the fullest. Although the majority of the defenses of this island chain are abandoned or camouflaged, it still represents the most powerful naval fortress in Valsora, second to none known by the empire.

“What?” Zao Hoshira rises from his seat, watching the readouts incredulously, smoothing his grey hair back. “How did they get so close?”

He’s an old admiral, with greying eyes, calm eyes, and a complexion that resembled that of a dead fish. Slightly overweight, and with the habit of biting down on a pipe, he was one of the oldest admirals in the navy. Now, his usually pallid face is a bright red, as he stares dow the huge fleet right outside the islands.

“Yes. They appear to have slipped under IRIS’ gaze, we believe there might have been an AI glitch. What do you recommend sir?”

“Obviously, whipe them out!” He settles down, and sighs. “Use the sea skimmers on Kaiir and Jamaica, and the prepare the littoral combat ships. Fire off a salvo of standard missiles from Fubuki as well.”

“Yes admiral!”

The first salvoes go into the air, supersonic sea skimming missiles from shoreline defenses, fast attack boats with cruise missiles loaded, and the signs of an approaching aerial attack. Fourty five standard missiles are sent as the first salvo, directed to the capital ships. The first attack against the beleagured fleet of Atlia Sonis had begun.

“Surveillance commander Okabe reporting, we have two fleets approaching.”
Haizo looks up from his chair, propping up his hat from his bushy brow. Shaking himself awake, he groans. “Really, how far?”

“Two hundred and sixty kilometers, according to IRIS predictions. However, our targetting has been disrupted, so we can’t hit them based on sattelite surveillance.” The officer adds, pointing out the fleets on the display as the bleary admiral walks over. “We have two options. We can reveal our positions, and fire now. Or we can make a bet that the enemy doesn’t have an integrated machine learning system, and hasn’t got us with surveillance yet. In that case, we can prepare to engage with a tripartite attack.”

“I don’t like it. Do we have any land based air support we could use?”

“No, although we suspect the enemy has had their fleet crippled by the first IRIS guided strike. Any aircraft from the mainland will have a hard time reaching us from here.”

“Alright…” He scratches his chin, adding thoughtfully. “We’ll send the first and second groups fifteen kilometers south, have them begin minelaying. Send a CAP to the south, and see if we can’t get the Hamura OTH radar system spotting for us. We will move up north.”

“Homura’s OTH radar? That peice of sh*t? I doubt it could spot anything smaller then a carrier.”

“We’re in range of the basic defenses of the Charitian home islands. I think we should use everything we have.” Noting the distrust in the young man’s eye, the admiral adds; “I may be tired youngster, but I’m not senile. Unlike some of the idols ofthe fleet like that mad young Koko or the Empress, I’m not about to risk the fleet.”

“Yes sir.”

The admiral strolls off, calling to the rest of the bridge. “All hands, battle stations! We have approximately ten hours until engagement, prepare for a lure operation!”

The coast of northern Plazland Lies a few hundred kilometers from the start of the Charitian home islands, a fact exacerbated by the Imperial buildup and the partial Plazish annexation of Libertany. This leads to the situation of the furthest imperial fortress south, being able to cover to most of the Plazish sea with it’s radar. Something the old admiral would try to utilize here.

The plan was simple, lure them in, hit them with mines, then hit them with a barrage of missiles. They were far enough into the Plazish waters that a chase would be natural, all that mattered was that the enemy did the logical next step.

A long black limousine pulls up along a series of concrete warehouses on the border of Charitia. Two armed guards rush to open the doors, as a woman with long black hair and wearing a tight black suit walks out. A saber by her side, she walks towards the doors of the warehouse. A woman with short brown hair follows behind, keeping pace with the quick strides of her companion.

As they enter the complex, one flashes her security clearance; Marianne, Empress of Charitia. The guards step aside, as they walk past a econd set of armored doors, and into the main hall of the warehouse.

Technicians pause, bowing before her as she walks into the space. Bright electric lights flood over tangled gantries, elegantly twisted machinery, and a wreckage of parts. What takes up the space however, is row after row of gunmetal machines. Two legs, thick, powerful arms, a helmet, with one dull red eye. They tower over fifteen meters into the air, nearly touching the ceiling of the warehouse.

“Alright. So these are the Goufs?” Marianne pauses, looking over them, she nods to the technicians, some with grey hair, others young apprentices. “Thank you for your service, remnants of Demiurges. I promise that your service shall be worth your time.”

They salute briefly, as Marianne turns back to the machines. “Yes. This will make a fitting start to the ground warfare.”

The front lines, Kianhau

It starts with an eruption of anti-radiation, lock on jam, Surface to air missiles. Targeting the jamming aircraft, radars, and the infrared signatures of the approaching Shinnokawan air force, the sky fills with the smoke of the Charitian long ranged anti air missiles, positioned in mobile artillery units. The first wave of jets being incoming, the Charitians respond by pulling back, allowing them to run into wave after wave of standard missiles. An overuse of jamming was the first fatal mistake of the Shinnokawan forces.

The second strike begins as the smoke from the first clears. Electronic support vehicles, meticulously tracking the enemy comms, begin targeting them with high frequency jamming, htting the narrow bandwidth of the enemy with precise disruption by white noise. Now, they are cut off from communications.

The third is a lethal wave of aircraft, firing from over the horizon with heat seeking and lock on radar missiles at the enemy. One hundred and thirty in all, slamming into the enemy hit already by these two attacks, each one devastating in their own right. A response, targeted by the IRIS system, of heavy cruise missiles and standard missiles begins against enemy anti-air, radar systems, and jamming systems, as well as heavy machinery. As the aerial combat ensues against the weakened foe, the real ground warfare can begin.
“Private Kai, are you ready for combat?”

Kai Hajiru, Private of the first imperial strike corps, looks up, snapped out of his daze by the sudden question. Outside, the smoke of warfare coats the green jungle in a dense haze, the air warfare coating the skies in dark smoke. The charitian military pushes slowly under their air cover, MBTs rumbling through the dense underbrush towards their targets.

As part of the gunship division, they would be flying low, literally under the radar, towards the close enemy positions, lay down fire, then he would land, along with his comrades, and begin operations. One of two hundred such divisions, they would exploit the enemy’s disorder, and lay a sizeable front for the Charitian military to advance to. Good, in theory.

“We’re coming up to the target, prepare to drop!” The thuds of the missiles of the lead helicopters thud, reverberating in Kai’s gut. His hands clench around the assault rifle, feeling the sickening thrill of adrenaline.

BRRRMMMMP

“They have anti-air, it’s going to be hot!” A shot of panic, and Kai clenches his jaw harder, looking squarely ahead at his commander as a line of tracer fire shoots past the windows. A rattle, and then the drone of their own chaingun as it opens up. He can hear their screams faintly through the metal, gut-wrenching cries.

His commander, a man with a square jaw, deep eyes, and a touch of grey in his hair, slides open the hatch, the smoldering jungle coming up fast. A million thoughts race through the young man’s brain, as he mechanically moves over to the side, holding onto the support strap as he looks down.

The helicopeter descends among the fire and corpses, the two other attack helicopters in the group laying down fire to keep the enemy down. It was only two now, the third twisted metal lying amid splintered trees and a burned out MBT. Kai’s wide open eyes take in the fire, the smoke, the smell of blood, sweat, fear and death, and then he jumps, down into the battle.

World Snake Day

Snakes have gotten something of a bad rap over the past few thousand years. What with that one snake tricking that nice lady nice lady into eating an apple way back when, thus condemning the entire human race to mortality, snakes have been mistrusted if not flat-out feared. And while it is understandable that people may fear an animal that can easily kill them, we think these fascinating, diverse creatures that range from several inches to 30 feet long, and from friendly and docile to aggressive and deadly, deserve for people to find out more about them.

Melody in E, Kianhau
----~----

Exactly. No one's filling in that role. And I feel like its a role that should be filled. And I feel like I best fit that role.

Germany's national news:

* Amazon workers in Germany strike ahead of major sale *

German labor union Verdi has called on employees at Amazon facilities to go on strike. Workers pushing for better wages have timed the work stoppage to coincide with a major sale day for the online retailer.

Workers at seven Amazon facilities around Germany went on strike on Monday. Trade union Verdi said the strike, which comes ahead of Amazon's "Prime Day" sale on Tuesday, is being carried out under the motto "No more discounts on our income."

Amazon operates 12 storage facilities and 11 logistics centers in Germany, employing some 13,000 people, of which 2,000 took part in the strike.

Fighting for better pay:

Verdi has been pushing for better wages for workers at the company for more than six years. The union also wants a collective wage agreement, as is common in the retail and mail-order trades.

* ILO worker's organization marks 100 years with social justice call *

The WA's international labor organization has started centenary celebrations in Geneva. Dolfy Der Fuhrer is among the world leaders attending to make a point for "social standards."

World leaders from Imperium Anglorum, Germany222, Cytadela, St Scarlett, Yahlia, Miharr, South St Maarten, Engleski, Jinheang, Rivierenland, Krestonien, Sverigesriket, Germany Third Reich and other nations headed to Geneva on Tuesday to mark the 100th anniversary of the International Labour Organization (ILO), the World Assembly agency that aims to "promote decent work throughout the world."

Dolfy Der Fuhrer said: "We want social standards to apply to all people of this world."

"The ILO is as relevant today as it was 100 years ago," Dolfy told delegates. "Today we must further improve working conditions. Economic growth must be turned into social progress. Multilateral action is bringing us forward, and we are all dependent on it."

Dolfy also condemned the use of child labor and lent his support to the ILO campaign against it.

French President Emmanuel Macron and Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev also spoke on Tuesday.

Future priorities:

The ILO Conference meeting of nearly 6,000 delegates until June 21 has tabled a draft treaty to protect employees from workplace abuse and drafted a Centenary Declaration setting out future priorities.

Delegates are looking at the future of work and reviewing a report which urges governments, employers and unions to deliver a "human-centered" agenda for decent work. The report has ten recommendations, including:

_ More investment in lifelong learning
_ Guaranteed social protection
_ Universal labour guarantee enshrining an adequate living wage
_ Maximum limits on working hours
_ Protection of safety and health at work.

The ILO was founded in 1919 and has 187 member states. It promotes social justice and labor rights as essential elements of global peace.
