Some of the "Tycoon" games are my preferred ways to park my brain. Sid Meier's Railroad Tycoon got it's hooks in me first. I've been through all the variations on that theme and still play Railroad Tycoon II via Steam. Roller Coaster Tycoon gets some of my downtime, but I find myself designing roller coasters more than building all out theme parks. And somewhere in my past is a game that I can no longer find a way to play called Sim Tower. I have Sim City but never had the time to learn it. (If I remember right the one time I tried it, a tornado ate much of my work.)

However, my favorite game pastime is my pinball machines. Too bad I am not home long enough to enjoy them.

The part that haunts my dreams are some of the things I witnessed on the raw tape. Imagine having a fire at your back to the point where jumping from 80 floors up is a better option than staying put.

As the fates would have it, where we set up was next to one of the locations the FDNY ambulances staged to pick up the remains of fire fighters and other first responders as they were recovered over the next few weeks. We would know when the recovery teams were going to bring someone out. All work on the pile would stop. Everyone would stand at attention, firefighters and police officers holding a salute as the backboard or litter passed from hand to hand down the rubble to the point it could be met, covered with a flag and walked the rest of the way to the ambulance. (The things we did not show you on TV...)

As a former paramedic, that hit me the hardest. Those men and and women just wanted to help and they died for their efforts.

National Sober Day

National Sober Day on September 14th encourages us to celebrate Sober life and bring awareness to addiction. The entire day focuses on showing support for anyone living in sobriety. Not only that, but the observance sets a standard for the whole world that being sober is okay. Show your friends and family on the road to recovery by spending the day sober as well.

Ideally scheduled during National Recovery Month, the day supports removing the stigma associated with addiction. It opens the lines of communication that lead to better understanding. The day provides an opportunity to build educated support networks. It also strengthens existing ones. When systems are paved with an aware, loving, and honest cheering section, success is more likely. If we stumble, aren’t we more likely to get back up again when we have a solid support system?

Encouragement of one day fuels more support and awareness, leading to long-term sobriety. That’s something worth celebrating! The opposite of addiction is a connection. This holiday will provide a model for future generations as well. By demonstrating how to enjoy life alcohol-free, the day will embolden future generations to say no to alcohol.

HOW TO OBSERVE #NationalSoberDay
Spend the day sober. While that may seem simple enough, it may come as a challenge to some. Start by finding recipes for delicious mocktails. Be sure to plan activities that don’t feel like they require alcohol to have fun. Enjoy the day! By all means, do things you and your friends enjoy doing. Just remove alcohol from the equation. Call, text, email a friend or family member in recovery. Let them know you support their sobriety. Share with them how you are going to spend this day alcohol-free.

NATIONAL SOBER DAY HISTORY
Real Aligned Women founded National Sober Day in 2019 to encourage us to celebrate Sober life and bring awareness to addiction. You are never alone in your sobriety.

In 2019, the Registrar at National Day Calendar proclaimed National Sober Day to be observed on September 14th annually.

There are over 1,500 national days. Don’t miss a single one. Celebrate Every Day® with National Day Calendar®!

I'm celebrating my birthday today and since 2001, I'm not happy about my birthday falling on this day. Up until the year 2000 my birthday used to be just another normal day. However since 2001, 9/11 has been tied to a day of national tragedy. It’s hard to celebrate when I know many people are mourning the loss of their loved ones on this day. So I hope everyone who perished on 9/11 are resting in peace and today I'm praying for them and their family.

Btw in case anyone in Texas shares my birthday, I found a site for people born on September 11: http://birthdayspirit.org/
