International Sushi Day

June 18th is International Sushi Day, and the first year it was celebrated was in 2009. International Sushi Day was created for one simple reason – to encourage all around the world to eat and love more sushi. Fun fact: Southeast Asians developed the original type of sushi, which consisted of fish wrapped in souring, fermenting rice. The dish then spread to southern China before reaching Japan.

INTERNATIONAL SUSHI DAY ACTIVITIES

Create Your Own Sushi
Pick one of the many ways to create sushi, go to your local fish market, grocery store to buy the ingredients, and handle business. Roll up that sushi with love! Pretty soon you’ll be a sushi-chef in no time.

Give the gift of Sushi
Bring a loved-one or friend to your favorite sushi joint, We’ll make the world a better place, one roll at a time.

Head over to your Local Sushi Restaurant
It’s that easy. Walk-in and enjoy your favorite rolls, or all you can eat portion at your desire.

WHY WE LOVE INTERNATIONAL SUSHI DAY

The Taste
Looking to have your mind blown? The possibilities are endless as you create your own combination of seafood, vegetables, seasonings and sauces and have your sushi your own way. Mmmmm.

It's Very Healthy
It's difficult to get much healthier than raw fish and veg. The rice maybe isn’t the healthiest food in the world, but the carbs in it will give your body the energy it needs. If you’re looking to lose weight and stay in great shape then sushi is the way to go.

Variety
You'll never get bored as there are a plethora of things you can choose with sushi. Even if you don't love everything on the menu you will find something that tastes great. For extra flavor and spice, use soy and wasabi to dip your your food in.

National Go Fishing Day

Observed annually on June 18, National Go Fishing Day is a great day to take time from your daily routine to find a stream, a lake or pond, bait your hook, cast your line and catch a fish or two (or ten). Fishing is a recreational pastime of many, and if you’re lucky, you can bring home a fresh catch.

NATIONAL GO FISHING DAY ACTIVITIES

Go out and fish
If you own a boat, great! If not, ask one of your friends to go on a fishing adventure with you. Be sure to bring the bait!

Build a fishing-themed playlist
Bust out that Spotify app and make a go-fishing playlist that will ignite that inner fisherman inside of you.

If you can’t go fishing, go eat some fish
Yes, we said it. Although it isn’t the same thing as being out on the water and catching your lunch, might as well visualize it with every bite at your favorite seafood restaurant or equivalent. You can even defrost that fish from Costco and enjoy a grilled fish for dinner.

WHY WE LOVE NATIONAL GO FISHING DAY

It’s a bonding experience
The same thing can happen with any other activity, but with fishing – once you’re in the motion of things, you start acting in the present and usually start to talk about the things that matter most with the people that matter the most.

It’s a form of meditation
Fishing gives you a chance to really disconnect from your work-life. By throwing a line in the lake, and waiting for a snag, one can get lost in the experience, and work feels a million miles away. If you need space to think, fishing is the key. It can be a powerful time for reflection to connect ideas, follow random trains of thought, and meditate.

It’s a challenge
We long to be challenged, but if we’re always challenged by the same thing – it can wear us down and burn us out. Fishing is great because it calls on a different set of skills and demands something entirely new from us. We get the satisfaction of rising to the occasion when our comfort zone is being pushed.

So... The Supreme Court just gave President Trump enormous power to legislate through executive orders. The next few months could be a lot of fun.

Fort verden

I don't see how. Sounds like this was a narrow ruling, and executive orders are nothing new. They weren't ruling on Executive orders as a whole.

Fort verden and Kyletana

That's not how it works. The Supreme Court said their reasoning for getting rid of DACA wasn't sufficient. That doesn't give the White House a blank check with executive orders.

Fort verden and Kyletana

The reasoning behind it because there was insufficient procedure followed by DHS. Until that is addressed, DACA still stands because nothing was cleared up how to handle it when it was rescinded.

Juneteenth

Juneteenth, which marks the end of slavery in the U.S., commemorates African American freedom — while emphasizing education and achievement.

JUNETEENTH TIMELINE

June 14, 2019
Call for a national holiday

Boston Globe columnist Renée Graham wrote that Juneteenth deserves an elevated status — noting that many African Americans regard the nation's July 4 holiday with deep ambivalence. Graham also mentioned that Thomas Jefferson, who wrote "All men are created equal," owned hundreds of enslaved people."

She went on to say: "As a day marking American independence, July 4 is incomplete. Only with the freeing of those enslaved thousands in Texas could this nation try to claim Jefferson’s lofty words as its own."

1980
Texas declares Juneteenth a state holiday

While Texas was the first state to observe Juneteenth as a state holiday, many others have since followed suit. Only five states do not recognize the day of celebration — Hawaii, Montana, New Hampshire, South Dakota and North Dakota.

July 2, 1964
President Johnson signs the Civil Rights Act

This act gave the federal government the power to enforce desegregation while prohibiting discrimination based on race, color, religion or national origin.

August 28, 1963
Martin Luther King, Jr.'s "I have a dream" speech

Dr. King spoke in front of roughly 200,000 people at the Lincoln Memorial. Now, a half century later, his speech ranks among the all-time most inspirational in American history.

June 19, 1865
Texas slaves finally gain their freedom

Even though they were officially made aware of the Emancipation Proclamation on this day, many slaves stayed with their masters as paid hands. Of those who chose to leave their former owners, some were tracked down and killed. The proclamation did not mean immediate freedom.

HOW TO OBSERVE JUNETEENTH

Fly the Juneteenth Flag
Echoing the red, white and blue of the U.S. flag, the Juneteenth flag signifies that slaves and their descendants are true Americans. A star in the middle represents Texas, with a larger outer star representing a new freedom and a new people.

Attend a Juneteenth Celebration
Some citizens in the southern states celebrate with readings and oral histories of their ancestors, which is an honorable way to remember a somber period in American history. Celebrations also include cookouts, rodeos, concerts and parades.

Watch a movie about slavery
Recent titles include 12 Years a Slave, Glory, Amistad and Django Unchained.

5 COURAGEOUS AMERICANS WHO FOUGHT FOR EQUALITY

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
Perhaps the most widely-recognizable name associated with the civil rights movement, Dr. King gave us the famous "I have a Dream" speech in August 1963. His 1968 murder proved that the movement still had a lot of work to do.

Rosa Parks
With a simple refusal to surrender her seat on a public bus, Parks made a bold statement for African Americans in the South. Her December 1955 arrest inspired the Montgomery Bus Boycott.

Mildred Loving
Loving and her husband, Richard were jailed for unlawful cohabitation in Virginia where interracial marriage was illegal in 1958. Their case reached the Supreme Court in 1967, which ruled unanimously in their favor.

Frederick Douglass
An escaped slave, Douglass became an advocate for the abolition of slavery as well as women's rights.

Dred Scott
Enslaved African American Dred Scott sued for his family's freedom in 1857. The Supreme Court ruled against him — finding that no person of African ancestry could claim U.S. citizenship.

WHY JUNETEENTH IS IMPORTANT

We need to learn from past mistakes
Acknowledging our past helps us to understand what all of us must do as a society to improve.

Empathy
Most of us can't imagine a world like this. When Texas finally "freed" their slaves in 1865, it came 30 months after Lincoln's proclamation. Still, even today, America struggles with race relations.

Redemption
Texas was the first state to establish Juneteenth as a state holiday in 1980. Today it's a "partial staffing" holiday in Texas; government offices do not close but agencies may operate with reduced staff.

National Garfield the Cat Day

He’s witty, he’s sassy, he’s blunt, he’s saucy…he’s, well, Garfield. On June 19, National Garfield the Cat Day celebrates the world’s most opinionated feline. With insights ranging from global politics to his infatuation with lasagna, Jim Davis’s lovable tabby cat has endeared himself to audiences of all ages around the world. So, come enjoy a few candid one-liners and some heartfelt laughs on this warm summer day, and leave admitting that, deep down, we all want to know what our pets really think about us.

Cats become deities

The earliest evidence of felines as deities comes from an Ancient Egyptian 3100 B.C. crystal cup decorated with an image of the cat-headed goddess Mafdet.

NATIONAL GARFIELD THE CAT DAY ACTIVITIES

Write your own comic strip
Learn to write and draw like the legendary Jim Davis. With sketch artists to aid in your quest for comedic brilliance, explore the comic strip world and bring your own ideas and characters to life.

Try a lasagna blind taste test
How well do you know Garfield’s favorite dish? Ricotta, sausage, squash…doritos?! Throw on a blindfold and delve into the depths of Garfield’s psyche as you try and decipher the plethora of ingredients that make our tabby cat’s mouth water.

Liven up your Monday
Ah, Mondays – what a day indeed. Can you come up with the best, worst thing about that detestable day? Have no fear, you’re in a safe place – we are all on the same side here. Let’s see who can articulate their “fondest” memory about the wretched day, and earn Garfield’s eternal praise.

WHY WE LOVE NATIONAL GARFIELD THE CAT DAY

Cats are sacred
Ancient Egyptians considered cats, or “Mau,” to be sacred, and domesticated cats became known as symbols of grace and poise. If you know Garfield, then you know, without an ounce of doubt, he unequivocally agrees.

Learn opinion versus perception
An opinion is a belief regarding something, whereas a perception is how we see that belief relate to other things. Is there a difference? Ask Garfield – he’ll give you his opinion, or rather, his perspective…well, one way or another, he’ll give you plenty to think about.

Laughter is the best medicine
Enjoying a good laugh is for everyone – it relieves stress, lowers blood pressure, and fires up your immune system. What better way to stay healthy than to explore Garfield’s sardonic truisms on anything and everything, laughing all the way?

There is nothing unfortunate about it. President Obama did an end run around congress with an executive order. As current Chief Executive, President Trump should have had every right to resend previous executive orders. (I need to get some time to read the ruling.)

President Trump told congress to come up with legislation to accommodate these people, don't litter it with a bunch of unrelated garbage, and he would be delighted to sign it. (I was present for that speech.) However, the never to be sufficiently cursed Democrats in both houses of congress cannot stand the idea that President Trump would actually solve this. So it didn't happen.

Summer Solstice

As the sun creeps up over the hills and into your town on June 20, you’ll know it’s here. That blessed time of year when barbecues and beach trips reign, when work slows and summer holidays mean getting together with friends and family. Just thinking about it likely brings up the smell of fresh cut grass and the taste of cold lemonade. Summer Solstice — also known as the first day of summer — has arrived.

(We interrupt this poetic paragraph to remind you that this applies only to those living north of the equator.)

Now then — people have celebrated this day for thousands of years. Some of the earliest party animals were the ancient Mesopotamians, Celtic Druids, Chinese, and Egyptians, and all of these cultures had their own ways of celebrating that make even our craziest backyard barbecues look tame. When was the last time you had a multi-story bonfire and danced around it naked? That’s what we thought. But cultures have had good reason to celebrate since ancient times right up until today.

It’s the longest day of the year. Enjoy!

SUMMER SOLSTICE ACTIVITIES

Don’t miss a minute
Yes, this requires waking up early — very early — but don’t let that stop you. This actually starts the day before by making a list of everything you want to accomplish on June 21. Try to wake up before the sunrise, and find a place to watch it. Then, go about completing your list. Don’t rush too much; you’ve got plenty of time today. Then, find a spot to watch the sun go back down. It may only be by a few seconds, but you just successfully spent the longest day of the year being extremely productive.

Get outside
All over the world, one of the most common ways to celebrate Summer Solstice is to spend it outside. Take the family camping, have a cookout with your best friends, make a slip’n slide in the yard for the kids. All of these are surefire ways to take full advantage of the prolonged sunlight.

Do as the ancients did
If you’re up for a crazy party, do some research into how ancient cultures welcomed the summer season, and host a party with more or less the same celebrations. For example, if you wanted to emulate Northern European culture, you could throw a Litha party. Eat fresh fruit and vegetables that are ready for picking at this time of year, have a giant bonfire of oak and dance wildly around a maypole. Encourage ancient-era clothing for a really memorable, albeit strange, Summer Solstice celebration.

WHY WE LOVE SUMMER SOLSTICE

Welcome the dog days
School’s out, and for many businesses, summer also marks a slowdown period. Perhaps we leave the office a little earlier, or our schedules aren’t packed quite as full with meetings. We plan family vacations and take extended time off, which research has shown is a critical part of staying focused and committed to your work when things aren’t so slow. It’s a time for rest, relaxation, and rejuvenation.

Summer fun
From baseball in the U.S. (and Canada) to fiesta season in Spain, summer is deeply rooted in traditions all over the northern hemisphere. One of the most common summer traditions includes travel, which has enabled people from all over the world to learn more about the summertime traditions of other countries.

Summer makes us happy
We all know the early morning rays of summer bring a smile to our face, but there’s plenty of scientific proof to back that up. One recent study conducted by psychologists at BYU found that temperatures, pollution, and rain didn’t have nearly as much of an effect on a person’s mood as the amount of sunlight they received. The most significant variable that positively affected people’s moods was the amount of time between sunrise and sunset. So, get out there and take advantage of all that vitamin D.

In the days leading up to Ugliest Dog Day, snap pictures of any and every dog you see. Put together a slide show of your neighborhood’s dogs, out and about, enjoying their doggie lives. Share on social media and invite friends to upload photos of their dogs too.

Raise money for homeless pets
At school or work, you can help dogs that don’t have the luxury of a loving home. Hold a fundraiser or collect pet supplies to donate to your local animal shelter. Also consider becoming a volunteer or dog foster parent.

Hold your own dog contest
Ugly or adorable, celebrate the dog in your and your friends’ lives. Be it a dog fashion show, obstacle course race or best trick competition, use June 20 to have a pet party and show off the awesomeness of your dog.

FACTS ABOUT MAN'S BEST FRIEND

No Deodorant Necessary
Dogs only have sweat glands in their paws

What'd You Say?
Puppies are born deaf; they start hearing around three weeks

Screaming Color
Contrary to popular belief, dogs are not colorblind

WHY WE LOVE UGLIEST DOG DAY

It celebrates what’s inside, not outside
Dogs are loving, loyal creatures. They don’t care how their humans look, so why should we care about their perhaps less than perfect features?

It brings awareness to homeless pets
Unfortunately, dogs that may be considered not so cute often have a harder time being adopted. Remember your local pet shelter on Ugliest Dog Day with a donation of money or pet supplies.

It’s a chance to brag about your fabulous dog
Cute and cuddly or unappealing and smelly, dog owners aren’t bothered and truly believe their dog is the best ever. Show-off your dog and give Fido some extra loving today with a special day devoted just to the two of you.

World Refugee Day

Each June 20, the globe comes together to honor World Refugee Day. The United Nations General Assembly launched the holiday in 2000, and since then, the worldwide community has spent the day focused on ways to improve the lives of refugees. Most of us know that refugees are forced to leave their homes due to war, terror, or other crises—but fleeing their home country is often just the beginning of a difficult journey. Many refugees find themselves living in camps until they are resettled—some of which are dangerous or not well-equipped for long term living. Refugees don’t always have a say in which country they are ultimately relocated to, and the bureaucratic process involved in finding their new home can take years. Worldwide refugee crises have taken center stage in the news in recent years, so it’s more important than ever to share support and to celebrate World Refugee Day.

HOW TO OBSERVE WORLD REFUGEE DAY

Attend a United Nations event
The UN plans to host live digital events on World Refugee Day discussing the world refugee crisis, future goals surrounding the topic, and how to make a difference. Be on the look out for summaries of the events’ happenings, or see if you can attend for yourself.

Be a friend to refugees in your community
Reach out to refugees in your area. Consider inviting them into your home for dinner, or to spend a few nights in your guest room if they’re in need of somewhere to stay. Introduce them to your local community so they’ll have an easier time getting to know their new neighborhood. Simply being a friend can make a major positive impact in someone’s life, and serving as a guide to the community can be incredibly helpful.

Use your job to make a difference
No matter what you do for a living, there’s a good chance that your professional skills can be used to improve the lives of others. Volunteer your work-related talents to local refugee organizations. Last year, the UN shared a goal that someday soon, every refugee would have the opportunity for an education, a safe place to live, and ways to work and contribute to their communities. Chances are, you’ve got a skill or talent that can help in working toward one of those goals. If you own a business or are a hiring manager, you may also consider employing local refugees who are in need of work.

WHY WORLD REFUGEE DAY IS IMPORTANT

It builds empathy and raises awareness
The vastness of the world refugee crisis can be hard to grasp, but raising awareness can help make it easier for others to understand the extent of what refugees around the world are going through. It also builds a sense of empathy and compassion that brings people together from all walks of life, and that’s always a positive thing.

It provides an incentive to create a more peaceful world
In a more peaceful world, fewer people would be forced to flee their homes due to violence and unrest. Naturally, this would make for a significant decrease in suffering around the world. While working towards greater peace isn’t something that can happen overnight, it’s an important goal, and World Refugee Day reminds us of just how vital it is.

It encourages us to be better friends, neighbors, and citizens
It’s easy to feel helpless in the face of such a massive worldwide crisis, but taking small steps can help make a difference. World Refugee Day encourages all of us to think creatively about what we can do to help. It also motivates everyone celebrating the holiday to be better neighbors to refugees living in their communities, and to be more compassionate world citizens in general.

Good morning Ladies and Gentlemen of Texas!

Today, June 21st, 2020 is Father’s Day!

Father's Day was inaugurated in the United States in the early 20th century to complement Mother's Day in celebrating fathers, fathering, and fatherhood, paternal bonds, and the influence of fathers in society. The tradition was said to be started from a memorial service held for a large group of men who died in a mining accident in Monongah, West Virginia in 1907. It was first proposed by Sonora Dodd of Spokane, Washington in 1909. It is currently celebrated in the United States annually on the third Sunday in June.

In 1966, President Lyndon B. Johnson issued the first presidential proclamation honoring fathers, designating the third Sunday in June as Father's Day. Six years later, the day was made a permanent national holiday when President Richard Nixon signed it into law in 1972.

Father’s Day is an inclusive celebration. Maybe the man who was your Biological Dad was not the one who raised you - but it’s a good bet that there are other strong, influential men in your life. Father figures come in many shapes. Perhaps you were raised by an Adoptive Dad, a Step Dad, or a male relative who became a Surrogate Father. O if you were an orphan then you might have had a Father Figure who was like a Dad to you. Say thank you to any or all of the men you know who brought you up, guided, loved and protected you, since that is essentially what fathering is all about.

Happy Father's Day to all the Dads and Father Figures in Texas!

National Arizona Day

On June 21st, National Arizona Day recognizes the state that joined 48 states into a contiguous unit. Interestingly, Arizona became a state on Valentine’s Day in 1912.

Arizona is home to the oldest continuously inhabited settlement in North America. Established around 1000 A.D., the village of Old Oraibi is located on the Hopi Indian Reservation in Navajo county.

Known as the Grand Canyon State, Arizona brings the wilderness to you. The breathtaking views of the Colorado Plateau, which incidentally took over 70 million years to form into towering stone, are now one of nature’s grand centerpieces.

Carved into limestone cliffs along Beaver Creek, a well-preserved dwelling towers above the scrubland below. Home to the Sinagua Indians around 1500 AD, the Aztecs mistakenly named this place Montezuma Castle.

Like many of the Western states, Arizona Easterners came with the prospect of land, gold, and adventure. Cowtowns were born, and battle lines were drawn between those who wanted the territory and those who were already there.

Find your way to the Saguaro National Park to see the mighty cacti of the west. These majestic plants of the desert can grow up to 50 feet tall. Under the right conditions, they can live to be over 150 years old.

If you’re not buying the line “It’s not the heat, it’s the humidity,” and the soaring daytime summer temperatures of Arizona get to you, Lake Mead may be the cure. With hiking, watersport, camping, and beaches, there are plenty of ways to relax, have fun, and cool off. Plus this Arizona Bucket List Adventure Guide & Journal fits the need for any adventure you desire.

Father’s Day

On the third Sunday in June, Father’s Day honors the role fathers play in the family structure and society. The day recognizes not just fathers, but the father figures in our lives. These are the men we look up to who set solid examples for us and guide us throughout our lives.

Many families dedicate the day to their fathers and grandfathers. Whether they are first-time fathers just learning to change a diaper, or experienced fathers offering sage advice, the day celebrates everything a father is. Fathers from family to family play a variety of roles. They may be a caregiver, provider, or advisor. Some fathers are the strong, silent types. And yet others tell us stories for days. Fathers teach, guiding small hands as they hammer a nail or sail a kite.

We only look up to our fathers for so long. At some point, we begin to see things a little differently. But that’s not when we stop looking up to them. It’s at that point, we turn and look forward together.

FATHER’S DAY HISTORY

After the success of Mother’s Day, Father’s Day observances began to appear around the United States and world. However, the road to this national observance was not an easy one.

First Recorded Father’s Day
The first recorded celebration of Father’s Day happened after the Monograph Mining Disaster in West Virginia. The disaster killed 361 men and left around 1,000 children fatherless in December of 1907. Grace Golden Clayton suggested a day honoring all those fathers to her pastor, Robert Thomas Webb. On July 5th, 1908, the community gathered in honor of the men lost in the mining accident. The assembled at Williams Memorial Methodist Episcopal Church South, now known as Central United Methodist Church, in Fairmont, West Virginia.

Other Claims to Father’s Day
In 1910, the YMCA in Spokane, Washington recruited several clergymen with the help of Sonora Smart Dodd to honor fathers throughout the city. The date was set for June 5th but was later changed to June 19th (the 3rd Sunday in June), as many clergymen needed more time to prepare.

Harry C. Meek, a member of Lions Clubs International, claimed that he first had the idea for Father’s Day in 1915. Meek argued that the third Sunday of June was chosen because it was his birthday. The Lions Club has named him “Originator of Father’s Day.” Meek made many efforts to promote Father’s Day and make it an official holiday.

Presidential Intervention
After a visit to Spokane, WA in 1916 to speak at a Father’s Day celebration, President Woodrow Wilson wanted to make the day official, but Congress resisted fearing that the observance would become too commercialized. Once again, a president nearly intervened, but President Calvin Coolidge stopped short of issuing a national proclamation in 1924.

Sonora Smart Dodd continued to work to make Father’s Day a national observance. In 1938, she collaborated with the Father’s Day Council, a group of New York Men’s Wear Retailers, for the commercial promotion of the observance. Many Americans resisted the holiday for decades because of these attempts to commercialize the day.

It wasn’t until 1966, that President Lyndon B. Johnson issued the first presidential proclamation honoring fathers on the third Sunday in June. The holiday wasn’t made an annual event until President Richard Nixon signed into law, making it a permanent national holiday in 1972 over 50 years after Mother’s Day came into existence.

FATHER'S DAY FAQS

Why is Father's Day the third Sunday in June?
Sonora Smart Dodd, the daughter of an American Civil War veteran, gets credit for establishing Father’s Day. She suggested June 5, her father’s birthday, but her pastors couldn’t prepare sermons in time. They delayed the occasion until the third Sunday of the month.

What about men who are not fathers?
Check out International Men’s Day on November 19. It’s a day for all men to celebrate.

What sporting events happen on Father's Day?
* The final round of golf’s U.S. Open.
* Game 7 of the NBA Finals (if necessary).
* The 2019 NASCAR Xfinity Series CircuitCity.com 250 presented by Tamron — held at the Iowa Speedway in Newton. (2020 date tba)

Why Father's Day and not Fathers' Day?
Although Sonora Smart Dodd originally used the “Fathers’ Day” spelling on her original petition for the holiday, the bill Congress voted on had the alternate spelling. This enables the holiday to apply to individual fathers — as opposed to fathers as a whole.

HOW TO OBSERVE #FathersDay
Celebrate your father. Explore his favorite hobbies or encourage him to share a story or two. Play a game or take him to one. Enjoy your time with your father and celebrate him. Share images of you with your father on social media and be sure to use #FathersDay too!

FATHER'S DAY ACTIVITIES

Make your Dad or Father Figure feel appreciated:
One of the best ways to celebrate is to let him know how much you appreciate him. In the days or weeks leading up to Father’s Day, make note of all he does for the household on a daily basis. Then, on Father’s Day, tell him how much you appreciate these small things, and that it doesn’t go unnoticed. Even better, take on these chores or activities for the day, and let him rest and bask in the glow of familial appreciation.

Have a family day
It may be Father’s Day, but often you’ll find what fathers want most in the end is time with the whole family. Talk to dad and see how he feels about a family outing, and choose something everyone, at any age, can take part in. This will give him plenty of memories and stories to bring up at later family gatherings, and what could he want more than that?

Find a gift with meaning
Sure, a new weed trimmer would make him happy, but there’s always room for creativity when giving gifts. A gift with meaning, rather than functionality, may be a welcome change this year. Nostalgic items and homemade projects are always a good idea, but whatever it is, be sure it shows how much you appreciate having dad around, and everything he’s taught you.

WHY WE LOVE FATHER'S DAY

For better or worse, they make us laugh
Even the most embarrassing dad moments will always make for laugh-out-loud stories later on. And someday you’ll cherish all those times you rolled your eyes at the jokes he tried to tell the waiter at lunch. Dads make us laugh, even if we don’t see it at the time, and that will always be one of their greatest contributions.

They’re great teachers
Changing tires and fixing lawnmowers are just some of dad’s greatest teachings. Dads have been passing along their wisdom for generations, and we can never overlook that. From learning how to work a sickle at the dawn of civilization to showing us how to clean the food gunk out of the kitchen sink, dads have been there through it all to show us the way.

They’re forever patient
Dads put up with a lot. From playing prince (or princess) with their kids to taking care of whatever pet the rest of the family brings home, we can count on dad to come to love it eventually, even if he puts up a small fuss initially. And we can’t thank them enough for this.

National Selfie Day

Thanks to social media and the smartphone, June 21st recognizes a form of self-portrait that couldn’t exist without them; It’s National Selfie Day! We are encouraged to take creative (appropriate) selfies and share them on social media.

While the act of taking a selfie may predate social media, smartphones, and the word itself (which is now in the Oxford Dictionary), the popularity of taking these self-portraits keeps increasing. And the ability to take them gets easier all the time. Selfie sticks and multi-functional camera phones make it all too convenient to take these kinds of photographs as well as group selfies (aka groupies).

Selfies have become so popular, the most common types of selfies are earning names for themselves. Most of them are about documenting a moment in time, though others merely capture a look. They are called “selfies” after all. They usually feature a single person and that’s the person taking the photo. However, not all of them are about the photographer. We’ve gathered a few of them worth checking out.

Duck Face Selfie
The subject pushes out their lips almost as if going for an exaggerated kiss but it turns into a duckbill instead. Hence, the duck face.

Car Selfies
Social media is full of channels with videocasts located from the seat of one’s car. They’re informative, helpful, political, and funny. So, it shouldn’t surprise us that car selfies are a thing, too.

Bathroom Selfies
Where do we look our best? Before the wind and stress of life hit us, we look our best in the bathroom.

Pet Selfies
Next to our life partners, who do we love the most? Our pets. We take selfies with our cats, dogs, lizards, parrots, and so many more pets.

Bestie Selfie
Our besties might tie with pets for our love. It depends on the person. Either way, we take lots of selfies with our besties. #BFF, right?

Foodie Selfies
Why do we take selfies with food? It may be that it’s so beautifully presented or it’s our first time trying an exotic food, and we want to document the event. No matter the reason, foodie selfies are a thing.

Glamour Selfie
Other than the bathroom selfie, sometimes we look really, really good. Good hair day. The makeup is pristine and you’re dressed to impress. While you didn’t get all dressed up to take a selfie (or did you?), for some of us, the opportunity may not come around again. It’s best to get some proof.

Gym Selfie
Speaking of looking our best, sometimes a gym selfie is necessary to show progress. It also gives our friends the opportunity to say, “Hey, I haven’t seen a gym selfie lately. Are you slacking?”

Celebrity Selfie
If you find yourself on the train, in a coffee shop, or just on the street and see your favorite musician, author, or television celebrity, you’re going to stop and ask for a selfie. These popular little selfies make the rounds.

Travel Selfies
The Eiffel Tower. The Grand Canyon or the Hollywood sign. Broadway lights. Selfies in front of these epic locations add to a traveler’s collection. They’re like postcards to yourself.

Baby Selfies
Whether they are with your children, grandchildren, or other people’s children, baby selfies usually make us look good. We can’t help but smile. We can strategically place them in front of our bad spots. And they just improve our overall character.

Tattoo Selfie
Getting some ink is a major decision. Taking a selfie either while you’re getting it or afterward is part of the process.

HOW TO OBSERVE #NationalSelfieDay
Take selfies of you and with your friends and family. Post your favorite selfies from your travels or from group gatherings. Even if you’re not very good at taking selfies, we’ve got you covered with 7 Selfie-Taking Tips. Use #NationalSelfieDay to share on social media.

National Day of the Gong

National Day of the Gong on June 21st honors the gong’s unique history among instruments of sound, creativity, and healing.

Mighty and gentle, earthy, and celestial, this extraordinary instrument is a conduit of Creation. With an international cultural history, the gong offers sensory and multi-dimensional sounds. Thanks to artisans worldwide, gongs come in an array of sizes, designs, and origins. As an instrument, they are both beautiful in design and performance. While gongs originate in the East or Southeast Asia, they also have an ancient history in Rome.

Percussionists play these circular metal discs by striking them with a mallet. The tones or pitch vary depending on the size and shape of the gong. Other factors impact the tone as well. For example, gongs may be rimmed or rimless, shallow or deep. They may also be flat or bossed or knobbed in the center. The mallet also influences the resulting music and is used to play rhythms, creating melodies.

While the gong is an ancient instrument, it has become a profound presence within diverse performances and ceremonies. It also offers modalities for the Mind-Body-Spirit. Traditional and contemporary artists bring the gong alive through imaginative and effective spectrums of expression.

HOW TO OBSERVE #NationalDayOfTheGong
The celebration encourages us to enjoy, explore, create, and collaborate on this powerful day. Listen to the gong and its fascinating sounds, vibrations, and work in the world! Other ways to explore on #DayOfTheGong include:

* Discover the different styles of gongs and the sounds they make.
* Attend a performance.
* Learn to play the gong.
* Find out how a gong is made.
* Meditate or attend a spiritual session using a gong.

Use #DayOfTheGong to share your experiences on social media.

NATIONAL DAY OF THE GONG HISTORY

GongtoGo.com founded National Day of the Gong to celebrate the extraordinary ways the gong can impact the Mind, Body, and Spirit.

Since 2009, GongtoGo.com has been taking the gong where no Gong has gone before. Dedicated to expanding the outreach and applications of the Gong, Anne Marie enthusiastically shares her gong in unique, engaging, accessible, and transformational ways. Her tagline for GongtoGo.com is: The Gong is more than a dramatic effect: the effects are dramatic!

In 2017, The Registrar at National Day Calendar proclaimed the National Day of the Gong to be observed on June 21st, annually.

National Daylight Appreciation Day

National Daylight Appreciation Day each year on June 21st recognizes the summer solstice (the longest day of daylight in the northern hemisphere) and encourages people to celebrate the many benefits of the sun.

The day also offers an opportunity to learn more about the importance of daylighting. Daylighting is using skylights, windows, and other architectural openings to naturally light interior spaces. Doing so helps not only to reduce energy consumption but may also have health benefits.

Some areas of daylighting are designed with automatic dimming systems when natural light is present. These designs reduce the amount of artificial light required. The process is known as daylight harvesting.

Daylight has positive psychological effects, too. It can boost your mental health and helps lower depression, as well as helping to increase energy levels. The Vitamin D we naturally get from the sun also has many health benefits for us.

HOW TO OBSERVE #DaylightAppreciationDay

Enjoy the summer solstice, enjoy the sunshine. And most importantly, let the sunshine into your home! With the longest day of the year before us, open the windows and bask in the light. Let it flood your home with light and brighten your day. Try these other ways to celebrate, too!

* Take photos of the same place throughout the day, showing how the daylight changes.
* Plant a small herb garden in the sunniest window in your home and reap the rewards in your cooking.
* Capture a cat nap in a sunbeam.

And enjoy #DaylightAppreciationDay all day!

National HVAC Tech Day

With the days heating up, June 22nd is a perfect day for National HVAC Tech Day!

Why should we show appreciation for our HVAC (Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning) Technicians?

A variety of home heating and cooling techniques have existed since ancient times. However, central heating and air as we know it was born in the early 1900s. New inventions, like the residential air conditioner and advances in older technologies, such as the thermostat and blower-equipped furnaces, gave Americans greater control over their indoor comfort than ever before.

This newfound power was more than a luxury; it shaped the growth of the country. Sun Belt cities with triple-digit summer temperatures became much more attractive places to live and vacation, once they more widely adopted AC in the 1960s.

Today, many of us take the indoor comfort for granted. But it’s the technicians who keep our HVAC systems running, day and night, that we value just as much. If that’s not reason enough to show them a little love, here are a few more:

Extreme conditions are just another day at the office for an HVAC hero.

A few hours without AC or heat may be uncomfortable for us, but imagine working in those conditions every day of the week! HVAC technicians tirelessly brave the sweltering heat and numbing cold to restore our comfort, often at the hottest and coldest times of the year.

They go everywhere you’d hate to be!

Crawl spaces, attics, and all points in between—that’s where you’ll find an HVAC pro. Depending on the age and condition of the building, they may run into anything from dust and debris to cobwebs and pests, mildew and claustrophobically close quarters.

HVAC technicians can save you some green…

Want your next HVAC system to maximize your energy savings? An HVAC expert can help you choose the right equipment for your home’s needs and your family’s heating and cooling habits. He or she can even recommend different thermostat options that range from set-it-and-forget-it simplicity to real-time smartphone controls with power usage tracking.

The savings don’t stop there! Regular maintenance, provided by your trusted HVAC technician, helps keep your system running at peak efficiency. That prevents energy waste and minimizes wear and tear that can shorten the life of your HVAC investment.

…and they help you live greener!
Don’t forget that saving energy means saving the earth’s valuable resources. When an HVAC professional helps you select and maintain efficient heating and cooling systems, he’s also helping you reduce your carbon footprint.
