Hey John,

I think we should introduce or reintroduce ourselves.

Hi everyone! I’m Max. I was born in China but migrated to the United States a few years ago with my family. My nation is named after Yip Man because I admire Yip Man and he and I share the same surname. We used to be Buddhists but after arriving in the U.S. we went to church and my family and I were baptised as Christians. Max is the short form of my English name and Baptismal name Maximillian. So just call me Max okay?

I used to be from this region (Texas) but I don’t think I posted a lot the last time I was here. Nice to see everyone again. I hope I fit in better and belong here this time. :)

Max

World Rabies Day

On September 28th, NGOs, governments, and people from all over the world will unite to on World Rabies Day to spread awareness about the dangers of the disease, and how it can be stopped. The event, put on by the Global Alliance for Rabies Control (GARC), seeks to educate the public about how rabies can be eradicated in people and domestic animals if we take the appropriate steps. Around the world, dogs are the most common animal affected by rabies, with more than 99 percent of human cases coming from dog bites. GARC sponsors the event not only to raise awareness for one day, but with the hope that communities can put measures in place to help control the spread of rabies all year round.

World Rabies Day – History

1920s
Vaccination comes to America

Widespread adoption of the rabies vaccine soon occurs

1885
First vaccine developed

It was developed for animals

1700s
Europe tries to eradicate rabies

It attempts to destroy all stray dogs to fight the virus

300 BC
Aristotle writes about rabies

He writes a paper noting a disease that affects dogs and any animal the dog bites

How to Observe World Rabies Day

Get involved
GARC hosts dozens of events around the world, from South Africa to Afghanistan, where you can learn more about how to control rabies. The group is also circulating a pledge that people can sign to fight for the Zero by 30 cause. Other ways to get involved include organizing an event for yourself, or nominating a champion for a World Rabies Day award.

Do your research
There are several steps that must be taken in a number of different situations regarding rabies. Make sure you know what to do if your pet bites another person, if another person’s pet bites you, or if your pet is bitten by another pet. In any of these cases, there are specific ways doctors and veterinarians must handle the situation, so do your part to know as well.

End the stigma
When we think of rabies, we typically think of crazed dogs, humans, squirrels, and skunks, foaming at the mouth like zombies. Remember that these are symptoms of a deadly virus, and shouldn’t be taken lightly. So instead of seeing rabies as the plot of a horror movie, we may need to shift our thinking if we’re going to eliminate it.

Why World Rabies Day is Important

It has an ambitious goal
GARC has set an ambitious but admirable goal for rabies: Zero by 30. That is to say, by putting the right measures in place, the world could see zero human death of rabies caused by dog bites by the year 2030. This resolution was agreed upon in 2015 among a group of organizations including the World Health Organization, World Organisation for Animal Health, UN Food and Agriculture Organization and GARC.

It’s a serious disease
Every year, more than 60,000 people around the world die from rabies infection. Considering the World Health Organization deems rabies a 100 percent preventable disease, it’s now up to communities, NGOs and governments around the world to come together to put the measures in place that will stop these unnecessary deaths.

It spreads knowledge
By knowing how to prevent pets from getting rabies, anyone can do their part to put an end to the virus. World Rabies Day seeks to highlight local and state laws that help control spread of the disease, and also hosts events for vaccinating puppies under 12 months of age. Knowing about rabies is the first step to eradicating it among people and our pets.

National Sons Day

“Do I want to be a hero to my son? No. I would like to be a very real human being. That’s hard enough.” - Robert Downey, Jr.

When is National Sons Day 2019?
National Sons Day falls on September 28, 2019.

What is the significance and history of National Sons Day?
National Sons Day has taken on new meaning as we head into the third decade of the 21st century. The #metoo era is long overdue — and society can no longer overlook the importance of raising our boys with this in mind. The good news? A crucial national conversation has begun — finally.

Parents of sons today face challenges that seem so obvious — yet no one saw coming. Who could have predicted the stunning downfall of so many of America’s most famous and powerful men in so little time? The list of names sent shock waves through the world of entertainment, media, tech and politics. And no one knows where we’re headed next.

One thing’s for sure — it all starts with teaching (and modeling) respect.

Here’s lifestyle writer and dad Christopher Dale in a recent article for Motherly: “Parents of boys are in a precarious position, one where the rules of inter-gender engagement seem to be in constant flux. As society understandably amplifies the voices of accusers, we find ourselves raising the potentially accused.”

Accused and accusers. That’s a lot for our kids to handle. So how do moms and dads navigate these treacherous waters? There’s no simple answer. We’re in uncharted territory here — and this discussion needs to go on for as long as it takes. Preparing our boys for this will require a level of guidance and communication that our predecessors in parenthood could never have envisioned – and that we ourselves have yet to fully grasp.

Molding our sons into responsible men can either be seen as a perilous journey or an opportunity to grow as a human being. On National Sons Day, every September 28, we think about our boys and the legacy we leave behind as parents. More than that, we take the time to listen to our boys — to hear their dreams or fears and thoughts on changing the world. We all have a role to play. Men and women. Educators. Professionals at all levels.

Aside from that, men have struggled with a stereotype of showing strength without fear or compassion. Luckily, as society incorporates “emotional” equity in the workplace and at home, we’re all redefining what it means to be a good son — and a good man.

Let’s have meaningful conversations with our boys on National Sons Day.

It’s time.

What are the best ways to celebrate National Sons Day?
Stress gender equality: Make it clear that what each of you does as a parent is determined by your individual skills, interests, and what works best for the family — not your gender.

Encourage a #metoo conversation: Spend time discussing the recent events surrounding this movement. It’s imperative that boys grow up with a healthy respect for both men and women. Parents — especially dads — need to model this behavior at every opportunity.

Oh — and have fun! Despite the very serious times in which we we find ourselves, let’s not forget to enjoy the day. Only you know what your boys need most on National Sons Day. Make sure to include family, friends and community. And their favorite ride!

Sons through the centuries

1790
Beethoven

Ludwig van Beethoven's father, Johann, attempted a musical career, but we all remember his son, Ludwig, as one of the all-time greatest composers.

1858
Darwin

Robert Darwin carved out a successful career as a physician, but his son, Charles, changed the course of history — and gave lots of credit to his father.

1950
Dr. King

Martin Luther King Jr. wrote of his father's influence: "[He] had a great deal to do with my going in the ministry. This is not to say that he ever spoke to me in terms of being a minister, but that my admiration for him was the great moving factor. He set forth a noble example that I didn't mind following."

Hollywood's Shining Sons and Fathers

Mr. and Mr. Smith
Will Smith's talented son, Jaden, has worked as an actor, singer, and model. GQ once dubbed him "a "superstar who has taken fashion to an entirely different level." Jaden on his famous dad: "He started in music and transitioned to movies. I started with movies, and then I transitioned into making music. I look at him and use it as a blueprint of how good of a person he is, but not necessarily the success that he reached."

Brat pack
Actor Martin Sheen is the proud dad of three sons: Emilio Estévez, Ramon Estévez, and one boy who can be a bit "problematic": Charlie Sheen. (Check out Dad in "Apocalypse Now." You might think it was Charlie himself if you didn't know better.)

The family that gigs together...
The incredible jazz and classical trumpeter as well as all-around Renaissance Man, Wynton Marsalis, came by these gifts honestly — gigging with his pianist dad, Ellis Marsalis, while growing up in New Orleans.

Ziggy's stardust
What to do when your dad practically invented an entire musical genre? Check out Bob Marley's son, Ziggy, who released his seventh solo studio album in 2018. He wrote, recorded, and produced the entire album — which received rave reviews upon release.

Douglas family dynasty
Michael Douglas labored for years to distinguish himself as an actor apart from his famous dad, Kirk Douglas. According to Michael, who has his own distinguished career, it isn't an issue anymore. Well stated.

The Eastwoods
Actor/director Clint Eastwood has not one but two sons who are making noise in entertainment; Kyle is a renowned jazz bass player and brother, Scott, is turning heads as an actor.

Why We Love National Sons Day

Boys to men
National Sons Day reminds all of us to set high standards for our boys. Gender roles are shifting faster now than ever before. The day presents an opportunity for parents to take the lead on this.

Emotional support
From Dr. Meg: "While a mother’s encouragement for her son is most effective in the form of emotional support, a father’s encouragement is most effective in the form of words. A father’s words hold all the power to make or break his son."

Kindness and sensitivity
We can't stress this enough. Let's make a pledge to make National Son Day a time to reevaluate what we're teaching our boys. The next generation of men depends on our success as parents.

National Hunting and Fishing Day

National Public Lands Day

Like the song says, “This land is your land/this land is my land/from California/ to the New York island.” Now, you can honor it all on National Public Lands Day, held on the fourth Saturday in September. This year’s events fall on September 28 when outdoor freaks and geeks come out to participate in planting trees, removing trash, and observing wildlife. The whole idea is to draw attention to the beauty of our environment and attend events that bring us together. It’s also a day to reflect on how natural disasters, and human neglect can impact nature.

National Public Lands Day Activities
Clear debris from a trail

There’s nothing nicer than an early morning stroll on a neighborhood trail. But when that trail is strewn with bottles and other debris, it distracts you from the healthful benefits of your walk. On National Public Lands Day, do something different and clean the trail as you walk it. You’ll still get the good vibes from the exercise but you’ll also know that you are helping your environment as well as your neighbors.

Plant a tree
Planting a tree is the purest form of loving your environment. Contact someone from a local environmental organization and gather a group of friends to plant a tree in the name of a loved one or a cause. Partner with the American Cancer Society or some other non-profit to find out more.

Work to restore a historic structure
Contact the Army Corps of Engineers or the USDA Forest Service and volunteer to help restore any historic structures that may be in disrepair. There may be a small wood shed in the park that needs a few extra nails and some paint. It’s not much but whatever you can do helps.

5 Crystal Clear Facts About Recycling

It’s an energy powerhouse
Did you know that energy saved from one recycled aluminum can could supply power to your television for almost three hours.

Toilet paper toll
Consider this — it takes 25,000 cut trees in one day just to produce toilet paper.

Re-use that bottle
Since it takes about 4,000 years for a glass bottle to decompose, we could have settlements on Mars and that bottle will still be sitting in a landfill.

It can reduce paper and plastic bags
Grocery stores and supermarkets use up to about 60 million paper bags annually, which is a great argument for why you should bring your own bags to the store.

We’re number one!
The U.S. has the unenviable spot as the number one trash-producing country in the world.

Why We Love National Public Lands Day
It encourages us to appreciate our environment

No matter where you live in America, there's a way to show Mother Nature we love her. Even in congested cities, neighbors bond in community gardens. When life is hectic and work is exhausting, we can always jump in the car or on a bike and feel rejuvenated in the fresh air and beauty of nature. National Public Lands Day helps us to honor the wonderful gift of American parks, waters, and wildlife.

It focuses on a day of volunteer service
Getting out in the Great Outdoors helping to restore our parks, coastlines, and dwellings is a big part of National Public Lands Day. Volunteers come out from all over the country to do their part and help the environment. Even though picking up trash in the neighborhood park may not seem like a big deal, it is when thousands of people join together doing the little things that make a gigantic impact.

It's great exercise
No money for a gym membership? No problem. If you’re a couch potato, get up, grab a sack, and clean up a park. It’s wonderful exercise and you’ll probably meet other like-minded souls like yourself. All it takes is determination and a little elbow grease to do your part on National Public Lands Day .

National Neighbor Day

Want to be the favorite person on your block? National Neighbor Day celebrates the importance of being a good neighbor while contributing to one’s community and each other. Relationships with neighbors can often lead to close friendships. Neighbors are almost like family. They’re close to you in more ways than one. That’s why National Neighbor Day, held annually on September 28, promotes good relationships between neighbors. As Mister Rogers would say, “Please won’t you be…my neighbor?”

"It's a beautiful day in the neighborhood..."

The last episode of "Mr. Rogers' Neighborhood" aired on PBS.

1947
The first subdivision

Levitt and Sons began construction of Levittown, New York, a planned community of more than 2,000 homes. That's a lot of neighbors.

National Neighbor Day Activities

Host an event
National Neighbor Day is an excellent opportunity to throw a neighborhood block party. Put a committee of neighbors together and get set for the biggest little bash ever.

Invite them over
Spend some quality face time with the people (geographically) closest to you. You might spend years looking out for each other.

Get involved
Join your local neighborhood or condo association and donate your time to make the neighborhood a little better. You'll probably make some lifelong friends.

3 Ways To Be The Favorite Neighbor

Meet 'n greet
What? You haven't met your neighbors? We can't have that. March out there and introduce yourself.

Yard duty
Nothing drives neighbors crazy like staring at a messy yard. If you're lucky enough to have an actual lawn — make sure you take care of it.

Don't be too nosy
Some folks enjoy their privacy more than others. Don't ask too many questions, especially if it appears your neighbor isn't that keen on sharing information.

Why We Love National Neighbor Day

They're right next door, after all
Aside from family and friends, relationships with neighbors are the closest ones we have. It's best to keep neighborly relationships stress-free.

Opportunities to give
National Neighbor Day reminds us to be good neighbors by checking on those who live close to us and pitching in to help if we can. They'll do the same for you.

Show your kids how it's done
National Neighbor Day teaches younger generations the importance of being a good neighbor and contributing to the community.

***** Texas Saturday Breakfast *****

Yay! Saturday Breakfast Tridux! We return this week for Breakfast Sandwich III Saturday! WooHootie! We have been having so much fun whipping up one-handed breakfasts over the last two weekends; we are just going to do it again. Today's offerings are just so good, that there will only be two eXtreme Breakfast Bad Boys. How about we start with the El Fregadero Taco de Desayuno - this mammoth breakfast taco has everything in it including the kitchen sink! It starts with a full 12" handmade flour tortilla smeared with refried beans, topped with Texas farm-fresh, hand-picked, hen-house, Grade A, golden yellow scrambled eggs, crumbled, spicy in-house-made chorizo, ultra-crispy bacon, shredded Longhorn Jack cheese, an entire half of perfectly-ripened avocados, a small scoop of Spanish rice, all topped off with ooey-gooey jalapeño queso and your choice of salsa, all wrapped tightly and made just for you! While it is hard to top that, we will. We have been saving the best for last. We present The Luther, Breakfast Edition. As Luther would say, Oh Baby! This breakfast sandwich starts off with a super-fresh, deep-fried, generously-glazed, Krispy Kreme donut sliced in half and thrown on the grill to really krisp it up. A full quarter-pound sausage "patty" made from whole-hog, Texas pork loaded with the perfect blend of sage, maple, and chili flakes make it more of a burger than a patty. That is thrown on the grill next to the donut. To send this sucker over the top, a couple of strips of Texas Pecan-smoked, thick-slab bacon are fried up to top the patty. This buddy would not be complete without cheese, so when we assemble it, we put a thick slice of Velveeta on the bottom donut, add the patty, top with the bacon, add a handful of extra-sharp Cheddar quickly melted under the broiler, and top it all off with the other donut half. Want to go psycho? Just say, "Make it a double!" and we will throw an extra patty on there. As the immortal Macho Man would say, Oooooooh Yeah! It doesn't get much better than this Pardner! We hope you have as much fun with these modern marvels of the kitchen as we have. For the health-conscious, we are afraid you will have to have the Liquid Breakfast today. The Juice Bar is open with all the standard juices - Orange, Apple, Grapefruit, and Tomato. We will even fire up the Super Juicer for Strawberry, Banana or Kiwi juice. Try "The Suicide" - we dare you! Start your day off the right way, munch out and go back to sleep. Of course, The Never Ending Urn of Coffee is full and ready to help you wash it all down. Come on down and start your day right Texas. You know you want to!®

Texas announcement: Ethan is in the Hizzouse! :o

NewTexas: In my sent telegram I've got a record of a telegram I sent you. 217 days ago I sent you a telegram where I introduced myself to you and *Climbs up on a table and saluted you* and I didn't receive a reply. So I told my cousin let's start our own region without telling him the real reason why I wanted him to do it was I received no reply and thought I was being ignored by you. John thought I was joking around but to my surprise he listened to me because he wanted the titles Mayor and Founder. I regretted making the suggestion about 2 weeks later when John said he found out the hard way he's not ready to be a leader. I'm saying this so we can clear up any misunderstanding and start on the right foot this time and now that we've returned here I wonder if I'm going to be welcome here again. :\

National Love People Day

People write songs about it or read poems inspired by it but do we really know what love is? That’s something to consider on National Love People Day, held annually on September 30. Many religions and non-religious spiritual practices center on the idea of giving love wholeheartedly without expecting anything in return. This day is dedicated to inspiring and supporting others with the power of unconditional love.

National Love People Day – History

Mexico's legendary Chief Montezuma, believing chocolate to be an aphrodisiac, drinks 50 cups a day before consorting with the 600 women in his harem.

National Love People Day Activities

Help someone else
The idea for random acts of kindness epitomizes the spirit of National Love People Day. Share a resource or gift with someone in need. Offer to babysit so your friend can go out on a date night with their spouse. Write a check for cancer research. Give blood at a blood bank because it's one of the best ways to express to people you don't even know the love of life.

Express your love with the arts
Spread the message of National Love People Day by writing a poem or even sharing it at a poetry slam. Do a dance or paint a picture in the name of love. In these divisive times, art is an amazing outlet for showing how interconnected we are as a human race.

Be nice
Sometimes just a gentle word of support or showing empathy to a friend going through hard times is an effective way to honor National Love People Day. There's no money involved and no physical labor to undergo. Share a hug, a cup of coffee, and a listening ear to someone you do or don't know. It can make all the difference in the world.

5 Reasons Why Love Is A Necessary Evil

It's up and down
We're not exactly sure who's counting but scientists believe that people will encounter love seven times before they marry.

Sappho wrote about it
The Greek poetess, Sappho devoted verse to her famous female lovers on the island of Lesbos, from which we get the term "lesbian."

Our engagement rings express it
We wear engagement rings on the fourth finger of the left hand because the Greeks referred to that finger as the "vein of love," running directly to the heart.

Our wedding rings confirm it
Blame wedding rings on the ancient Egyptians who used a circle design indicating love as eternal along with of the sun and moon.

Sometimes we fall out of it
Married couples tend to divorce around year four but if they stay together; the next rough patch is year eight.

Why We Love National Love People Day

We're in love with love
Love make us feel good. Scientists even associate the release of the chemical dopamine when we experience either pleasure or that phenomenon called "love at first sight." It's also why we feel happy when we do something nice for someone else. Love is that powerful characteristic that keeps us doing for others whether or not we get anything in return.

True love is unselfish
For ages, romantic writers have reflected on the idea of "selfish love." But that's a misnomer. Real love is unconditional, meaning without limitations or restrictions. National Love People Day opens up a framework for discussion about why love is important without regard to color, ethnicity, religious or national backgrounds. Love is open and caring, the polar opposite of selfishness.

Real love is within
When the founders of the Lifeline Church came up with the idea for National Love People Day, it was to honor how love starts with the self and then spreads outward to others. We love ourselves when we eat healthy foods, develop good habits, and maintain a healthy lifestyle. By showing ourselves love, we then open up the dialogue to include love of other people.

International Podcast Day

Radio is so twentieth-century. It’s practically 2020 already, and the world has long moved on from the world of radio, and into the world of podcasting. A forced marriage between “iPod” and “broadcasting” lead to the creation of the word, and while the iPod has long gone extinct, its namesake form of media is here to stay. Podcasts have fundamentally changed the way people consume audio, and for that reason, we celebrate on Sept 30: here’s to International Podcast Day!

International Podcast Day Activities

Find a new podcast
With apps like Pocket Cast (for Android) and Downcast (for iOS), it's never been easier to find an interesting podcast. Browse by category, or by popularity, and you're bound to find at least a dozen that you'll have a hard time turning off.

Create your own
You can create your very own podcast, and you've likely already got the tools you need to get started. Between your mobile phone and your computer, you've likely got a microphone, and some app like Garageband or Audacity. Recording the podcast is the easy part — the real challenge comes when you're trying to pick a topic worth listening to!

Donate to your favorite producer
Many of the most popular podcasts survive on minimal ad revenue, and donations "from viewers like you." As much as even hearing those words can put one to sleep, they're there for a reason! Consider throwing a few dollars toward your favorite podcasts so that they can keep on broadcasting.

Why We Love International Podcast Day

Get your kicks for cheap
If you're into podcasts, here's some good news: they're almost always free, or really cheap. You'll have to put up with an ad or two throughout your programming, but they're not long and obtrusive like the ones we've come to expect on television. If you've got a device with an audio output and an internet connection, you can listen to podcasts: it's that easy.

Binge heaven
If you've only recently discovered podcasts, this one's for you. Unlike your favorite radio shows of yesteryear, that new podcast you discovered likely has an easily-accessed library of every episode they've ever aired. Be careful, though — the fact that you need to sit still and watch a screen is what keeps your Netflix-binging in check. With podcasts, you can listen to them anywhere, so it's easy to get through a dozen episodes and wonder where your day went.

They allow for serialized storytelling
While we all have a special place in our hearts for shows like The Wonder Years or Happy Days, episodes were generally self-contained short stories, without much room for depth. Many podcasts take their cues from the current television trend of having story arcs that span multiple episodes or seasons. Check out NPR's Serial for a listening experience you won't be able to let go of.

Nyah ha ha ha! Oh God Buddy! I do not deserve this Shout Out but thank you greatly. It is GREATLY appreciated.

NewTexas wrote:You are like a Weeble, you wobble, but you don't fall down. Good Job!

Perhaps that is why I am still alive Buddy. Nyah ha ha ha! That and the power of miracles which occurred as a result of the prayer chains or groups of people including everyone in Texas who prayed for divine intervention for me each time I ended up being critically ill in the ICU. This year, I have ended up in critical condition and winded up nearly dying and being on life support in the ICU several times. Each time, I gave up fighting for my life and wanted to give up and die but somehow I was able to pull through and survive. Therefore, once again, I would like to thank everyone in Texas from the bottom of my still recovering heart for your prayers for me to pull through and recover which my family and I GREATLY appreciated.

Ladies and Gentlemen of Texas,

I was feeling extremely upset yesterday as a result of having a nightmare in which I had suffered my third heart attack and ended up nearly dying and being on life support in the ICU again. I woke up to find myself alive and as well as I could be since I am still recovering but it made me feel depressed. Since yesterday was Sunday, I decided to just stay in bed and sleep for most of the day.

I used to be able to purge negative emotions instead of allowing those emotions to affect me. I failed to do that last weekend. From now on, I will never allow myself to feel blue or sleep for most of the day again unless I am sick.

You see, yesterday, September 29th was Family Health & Fitness Day and World Heart Day. I am very sorry I was unable to announce those days or share their importance with all of you yesterday. Therefore, I am doing it today:

Family Health & Fitness Day USA

This fall, celebrate Family Health and Fitness Day USA on September 29. Celebrated annually on the last Saturday in September, this event was created by the Health and Information Resource Center in 1996 as a way to get people of all ages physically active. Events are hosted at community sites all over the country. People of all ages and skillsets can participate — so there’s no excuse for you and your family to sit on the sidelines during this Family Health and Fitness Day USA.

Family Health & Fitness Day USA - History
1980s
Physical education programs were curtailed

Due to a recession, this decade saw educational institutions cut many physical fitness programs.

1975
Gender discriminated was lifted

Congress amended the Federal Education Act in order to end gender discrimination in school gym classes.

1966
Presidents created a fitness test

The Presidential Fitness Test Award helped measure kids' physical fitness.

1823
Massachusetts was the first state to take physical education seriously

Round Hill School in Northampton implemented physical education as an important part of its program.

1820
Schools introduced physical education

This included gymnastics and hygiene — among other things.

How to Observe Family Health & Fitness Day USA

Break a sweat
Possible activities include taking a dance class, going rock climbing, enjoying a bike ride outside, or going roller blading. You’ll get health and fitness benefits without making it feel like a chore.

Get the community in on the action
Post fliers at schools, coffee shops, and churches — and try and get your community to come together and make positive health and fitness changes. Kickball games, dance lessons, kickboxing sessions, or ice skating lessons are great physical activities.

Have fun in the sun
Enjoy the breeze as you do yoga outdoors; get some vitamin D as you do a hiking scavenger hunt; hide healthy gifts such as essential oils, jump ropes, bagged trail mix, popcorn, and granola; or relax in the sun with a tai chi class.

Five Unhealthy American Fitness Habits

Too many Americans are not physically active
A staggering amount people — 80.2 million over the age of six, to be exact — are physically inactive.

Not being physically active is expensive
Approximately $117 billion in healthcare costs are connected to physical inactivity due to the many health risks associated with it (diabetes, obesity, heart disease, etc.).

Physical education isn’t required in all 50 states
Illinois, Hawaii, Massachussetts, Mississippi, New York, and Vermont are the only states that require students in K-12 to participate in physical education.

High schoolers are video game-obsessed
Approximately one-third of high school students spend three or more hours on a school day playing computer or video games.

Children are glued to screens
Children spend about 7 1/2 hours per day in front of a screen (televisions, computers, phones, video games, etc.).

Why Family Health & Fitness Day USA is Important

It promotes a healthy lifestyle

World Heart Day

Every year, over 17 million people die from heart disease. As a way to fight this, the World Heart Federation created World Heart Day. It’s an event held every year on the last Sunday in September — falling this year on September 29.

People around the world can find events that raise awareness about cardiovascular disease (CVD) — its warning signs, the steps you can take to fight it, and how to help those around you who may be suffering. So on September 29, fight CVD by getting involved with a World Heart Day event near you.

World Heart Day – History

September 2017
Public Health England's online app

This online test measures "heart age," which shows how many years we can expect to live in good health without a heart attack or stroke.

November 2016
"A Healthy Heart Your Goal"

It's a British program designed to promote heart health and encourage people to lead an active lifestyle — and take up sports to help keep their hearts healthy.

November 2016
Hundreds of children screened

Over 200 children (and adults) were screened for rheumatic heart disease in Asmarat, a suburb of Cairo, Egypt.

2000
World Heart Day established

The World Heart Federation created a very important event — World Heart Day.

How to Observe World Heart Day

Designate the day for a checkup
You may even be able to find a World Heart Day event near you that’s offering health check services. It doesn’t get much easier than that!

Get your heart rate up with fitness events
Maintaining a healthy weight and low Body Mass Index (BMI) can help decrease your chances of developing heart disease. Whether you decide to attend a gym or fitness class — or prefer to get involved at a World Heart Day event — try to make being active a priority.

Schedule life-changing seminars
Most cardiac emergencies occur near someone who could potentially help — so setting up a CPR class and learning how to resuscitate a person could save lives. Cooking demonstrations, health lectures, and fitness lessons are also great events to plan for World Heart Day.

4 Crucial Facts About Heart Disease
Heart disease costs all of us

Each year, the U.S. spends approximately $200 billion in health care services, medication, and lost productivity due to heart disease.

There are 3 common risk factors
Smoking, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol (specifically LDL), are the key risk factors for heart disease. Half of all Americans suffer from at least one of these.

Sodium intake is putting kids at risk
Approximately 10 percent of children in the U.S. have high blood pressure due to the consumption of too much sodium.

Early warning signs are crucial
Approximately 47 percent of cardiac-related deaths take place outside of a hospital — demonstrating that people don't take early warning signs seriously enough.

Why World Heart Day is Important

It’s for your heart — and all our hearts
As the World Heart Federation says, September 29 is all about asking yourself: “What can I do right now to look after my heart…and your heart?”

It highlights worldwide events
World Heart Day is a universal platform that has the capability to focus attention on the millions who die from heart disease each year. Through worldwide events, the day offers health and fitness tips so people can lead a life free of cardiovascular ailments.

It encourages people to take action
By offering a variety of fun, healthy events — walks, runs, public talks, concerts, etc. — the day can inspire you to fight cardiovascular disease and live a longer, healthier life.

International Day of Older Persons

We’re fortunate to have older people around us, whether they’re family, friends, or just general acquaintances. Older people are fonts of wisdom, experience, and storytelling. They can inspire us to continue striving — or warn us of dangers we’re unaware of. We should look to them for guidance whenever and wherever possible. Unfortunately, far too often we tend to forget — or, worse, downright ignore — the older people in our lives. That’s one of many reason why the International Day of Older Persons on October 1 is such a terrific holiday.

International Day of Older Persons – History

1990
U.N. proclamation

The United Nations adopted October 1 as the International Day of Older Persons. About 10 months later, the world observed the first-ever International Day of Older Persons on October 1, 1991.

1982
Assembly on Aging

According to the United Nations, "the international community started to highlight the situation of older persons" by adopting the "World Assembly on Aging."

1948
Human rights and the elderly

The U.N. seeks to promote "the full and equal enjoyment of all human rights and fundamental freedoms by older persons."

How to Observe International Day of Older Persons

Chat with an older person
If we take the time to get to know an older person, even one right in our own family, we may see them in a new light and learn something about ourselves in the process.

Volunteer your time
There's a lot that can be done to make life easier for older people. Find out about organizations in your area that work with the elderly and see what you can do to help.

Become an advocate
The United Nations says "enhanced attention to the particular needs and challenges faced by many older people is clearly required." It's important to recognize, as the U.N. also says, "the essential contribution the majority of older men and women can continue to make to the functioning of society."

4 Reasons To Embrace Aging

The world is getting much older
Almost 900 million people in the world are older than 60. By 2050, 2 billion people — or 22 percent of the planet’s population — will be that age. In fact, by 2050 — for the first time in human history — there will be more people over 60 than there are children in the world.

Longevity is becoming commonplace
According to the U.N., life expectancy worldwide rose from 46 to 68 years between 1950 and 2010. It's expected to rise to 81 by the end of this century.

increases with old age
According to a recent study, most people are happiest in youth and then once they reach their 70s and 80s. Most people reported that they were the least happy in middle age.

Why International Day of Older Persons is Important

Older people deserve our respect and attention[/]
In addition to the wonderful things older people bring to our lives, a day set aside to honor them reminds us to take the time to be kind and humble in the presence of a long life well-lived.

[b]We want to teach young people
The holiday is a way to educate younger people on many of the issues faced by the elderly, such as abuse and senescence — the deterioration of mental and physical processes.

We don't know everything
If we're lucky, age confers upon us a measure of self-awareness and wisdom. Focusing on the challenges faced by the elderly reminds us that there is still much to learn about ourselves and the world.

National Fire Pup Day

National Fire Pup Day on October 1 honors canine members of America’s fire departments. Dogs have historically worked, lived, and slept alongside members of local fire departments. Although most people only associate Dalmatians with firefighting, there are actually many different breeds that do this kind of thing. And they’re not just companion animals, either. Many of these pups actually work fires and their aftermath, participating in search-and-rescue missions. There’s a long, interesting history surrounding fire pups. Let’s take a look.

National Fire Pup Day – History

2000s
Fire pups became mascots

As firefighting techniques became more modernized, fire departments began using Dalmatians and other fire pups as resident mascots. In addition to serving as companions, they guarded the firehouse and assisted with community outreach.

1800s
Carriage dogs became fire pups

When fire departments began utilizing horse-drawn fire carriages, Dalmatians remained alongside these contraptions since they proved to have a calming effect on the horses.

1700s
Dalmatians became popular 'carriage dogs'

Wealthy noblemen used so-called carriage or coach dogs to protect themselves and their possessions during long treks through bandit-infested territories. Dalmatians proved to be especially adept at this task.

How to Observe National Fire Pup Day

Adopt a fire-rescued dog
Fire stations sometimes take in dogs who have survived a fire — only to get left behind in the aftermath. You can adopt these dogs, usually during fire department benefits.

Donate to the cause
There are a lot of ways to get involved with your local fire department, and educational initiatives are especially helpful. Find out how you can donate your time or money.

Become a volunteer firefighter
Volunteer fire departments protect many communities across the U.S. If you think that might be a good fit for you, look into becoming one.

101 (Well...3) Reasons We Love These Dogs

They help catch arsonists
Dogs have moved beyond being "carriage dogs" and firefighting mascots to actually helping investigators determine the cause of a fire. The super-sensitive noses of "acceleration detection canines" can sniff out evidence of arson.

Talented Dals
Dalmatians made great "carriage dogs" and firefighting companions since their unique look made them easy to spot during nighttime, smoke-filled situations.

Canine instincts are uncanny
In 2012, a blind, deaf, three-legged Dachshund named True alerted its owner to a fire in their home. Everything was destroyed, but the family and True made it out alive.

Why National Fire Pup Day is Important

It's time to honor their bravery
Animals have a long history of assisting humans in dangerous situations. Fire pups are just as brave — and deserve to be recognized — just as much as dogs who have worked in wars, during natural disasters, or at crime scenes.

We owe fire pups our love and admiration
Dogs have been bred to be loyal and loving. Fire dogs have the added responsibility of providing that loyalty to people who work in especially dangerous situations.

Firefighters need all the help they can get
Firefighting is a tough gig. Dogs provide a measure of companionship that helps keep our firefighters happy, content, and focused.

National Fruit at Work Day

On the first Tuesday in October, National Fruit at Work Day encourages some fruitiness to get you through the day. Not only is fruit tasty, but it’s good for you, too.

It might surprise you what constitutes a fruit, too. For example, an avocado qualifies as a fruit, not a vegetable. Combine this superfood with some peppers and tomatoes (also fruit) and the nutritional bonuses will keep adding up.

Another surprising fruit is the eggplant. This purple fruit falls into the berry categories. Bring on the Parmesan. The tomato also falls under the berry family.

Joining the drupe family along with raspberries, the olive gives us added options for exploring the day.

The observance takes place during a time of year when many stone fruits come into season. Apples, pears, and more are ripe and delicious. Beyond the traditional fruits, squash also qualifies for this holiday. Their fall flavors blend well with other foods in season.

Don’t limit yourself to the traditional idea of fruit during this occasion. Since many of the fruits we think of as vegetables are in season, it’s an excellent time to enjoy them.

Benefits
Fruit offers many advantages over other snacking choices we make every day.

All-natural – Fruit comes in the packages they were grown in. Each piece has no added calories, fillers or artificial flavorings.
High fiber – Natural fiber found in fruit
Energy source – While we love our coffee, fruit also adds a natural boost of energy.
Improves memory – Fruits high in antioxidants, vitamin k, folate, and monounsaturated fats improve brain function.

HOW TO OBSERVE #FruitAtWorkDay
It’s simple. Pack some fruit and bring it to work. Snack on it throughout the day. Enjoy it for lunch. Share it with co-workers. Be sure to pack some for the kids and spouse, too. Try out new recipes with exotic fruits or bring out the old favorites.

Either way, get fruity. Show your enthusiasm for fruit.

NATIONAL FRUIT AT WORK DAY HISTORY
The Fruit Guys founded National Fruit At Work Day in 2000 to promote the benefits of eating fruit at work. They urge eating fruit at work all year long, but especially on Fruit at Work Day. Some people even dress up like fruit, act fruity, or even wear fruit to show their excitement for the day

I (mostly) hated that episode where everyone on the ship gets addicted to that game, except for Wesley and his new girlfriend (who I believe was played by Ashley Judd). The best part of that episode however is when Dr. Crusher slaps Wesley hard in the face. So satisfying.
