I choose none of the above. I would sell it to the highest bidder. Going to the past is unappealing because there would be no internet, no smartphones, and basically the further you go back the fewer of these sorts of conveniences you get but those happened in my lifetime and I view them as essential so I wouldn't want to have to do without after having had them. Going into the future is unappealing because the further into the future you go, the dumber you are comparatively compared with the rest of the population. We don't realize it while moving through time at normal speed but there are constantly new bits of science being added to the public collective knowledge and even the smartest person from a few decades ago would fail to comprehend a lot of modern science.
So I would stay where I'm at and sell the damn thing to some rich person with cancer or something, send them to the future to get cured, and become a billionaire. I'm assuming we can only use the machine once or else the question is moot since you could do all of the above, so you wouldn't be able to use it and then sell it.

So between my wedding & honeymoon and the terrible dorm internet, I haven't been on irc at all, but in a few weeks I'm heading back to the States and should thus be online more often and at a time when more of you are as well.

I am a Ravenclaw. Completely and utterly Ravenclaw. I'd be the Ravenclaw who offers suggestions for the questions people ought to be asked in order to get inside, and immensely enjoy coming up with loopy answers to the questions I am given to enter my common room.
Although I am rather sad that we never got to see the Hufflepuff common room. I imagine it must be very interesting. Does anyone else ever wonder if students from one common room would be allowed into another at Hogwarts?

I did wonder if the students were allowed to visit each others' common rooms. I don't think so, because it seems like even the locations are protected by various enchantments or such, but I don't know if that includes visitors.
The entrances would most likely be enchanted to stop people from other houses entering. But then again, the Harry Potter that J.K. Rowling wrote is very PG-13, and in a school filled with adolescents I'm not discounting the possibility that somebody would have tried to smuggle their boyfriend or girlfriend into their dorm for some smooshing.
New poll. I was a bit surprised no one chose Gryffindor. Always seemed like the most popular house, though it's certainly true we have a lot of Ravenclaws.

Took me a moment to realize what you were talking about but I think they're just spamming embassies.
I think that there are those who would want to be in Gryffindor because it's the one that Harry was in but I think most people choosing based on what the houses stand for would choose Ravenclaw. It's a school after all so the pursuit of knowledge just makes sense. I don't think I voted in that one though. I was deciding between those two but never really made up my mind.
