I didn't watch it, but I've just read the news about it.

Shame to see the People's Alliance lose some of their vote share as (from a distance) it seemed like a promising party. Can't say I'm fond of how Canadian politics is drifting considering the partys' treatment of Roland Michaud and John Wayne Gardner, even if neither of them really had a shot at winning.

Yeah, I've voted for the people's alliance the last two elections, but here they dropped from 13% to 10%. I'm basically die-hard purple right now, but unfortunately if the PCs are popular they'll directly eat into PA support. Their best bet is to be vocal and, somehow, disruptive for the next four years. No doubt the PCs will make mistakes that the PA will be able to capitalize on to gain some sympathetic voters. I went over out of frustration with how the PCs handled the administrative bloat in the province, and I know they'll be able to leverage that in the next four years to gain more people like me if they can highlight it well.

The removal of Michaud was kind of understandable for a party trying to appeal to socially sensitive voters. But, in the end it was just dumb boomer humour, and it worries me that a joke made two years ago in poor taste can sink a political campaign. As for Gardner, I can't say I was shocked that the liberals removed him, if the PCs have to be careful then the liberals have to be borderline obsessive. His comment was not offensive, and shouldn't have been grounds for any retaliation let alone removal. It is preposterous, the man thought that because he flies a gay pride flag straight people should be allowed to fly their flag, and for that he was branded anti-LGBT (despite that fact that he's gay) and removed. Ridiculous. I respect the fact that he didn't back down from his comments when pressed by the party, heck just for that I'd almost vote for him.

Either way, Vickers was a hero and now I don't even like him, he presented himself poorly and although I'd have coffee with him if he asked, something about him rubs me the wrong way. I think its telling he lost in his own riding.

Hello everyone

N-Day is incoming and my roleplay server is currently voting on our stance regarding it... Most probably we will see N-Day as some sort of non-canonical history portrait in a very well known movie which is being remade every year...

I wanted to post you some updates regarding that, since I gave up on organizing roleplay in this region. We are doing surprisingly good in terms of roleplay and participation, sometimes having problems with people bringing up real-life politics which is not allowed... We didn't ban anyone yet. It seems like the region can easily find other people like me, who wanted NS to be in-character in the first place.

As if we needed another lit match in the tinderbox: RBG has died. Trump will try his best to get this seat filled, no doubt.

Horatius Cocles wrote:As if we needed another lit match in the tinderbox: RBG has died. Trump will try his best to get this seat filled, no doubt.

My exact thoughts when this story broke. Students for Life has already made a Facebook post calling for Trump to quickly fill her seat.

I'm sitting here thinking, "Does anyone remember four years ago, when we criticized Democrats for doing the exact same thing, in the exact same situation? Does anyone remember when we said 'this Supreme Court appointment should be left to the next President and Congress?' Does anyone remember a guy named Merrick Garland, whose appointment Republicans gave this argument for blocking?"

I supported that argument in 2016, and I support it now. Whoever wins in November should have the right to nominate RBG's replacement. To be unwilling to hold ourselves to the same rules that we hold our opposition to - that is the epitome of hypocrisy. If Trump does get an appointment through before the election, I might like the appointee, and I would like to see RBG replaced with a true conservative justice anyways. But I would always have a bad taste in my mouth from the hypocrisy of the appointment.

I haven't been able to support the Republican Party since 2016 because I found their behavior no different from the Democratic Party. There are certainly good Republicans, but there are good Democrats too. I wish Republicans would take the high road, but I haven't seen that. I will wait and see what their response is to this vacancy, but I'm not optimistic.

Edit: I made this post the very night that RBG's death was reported. Over the weekend, I discussed the vacancy with friends and family, and I changed my mind.

Let's be clear: If you say in 2016 that not considering SC nominees in an election year will be the "new rule", and then you pledge to consider a nominee in 2020, that's blatant hypocrisy. (Looking at you, Lindsey Graham.) There's no good way out of that.

However, there is strong historical precedent for the decision to consider a nominee from Trump now- and even for not considering Garland in 2016. The presidency and Senate were held by different parties then, and it had been over a century since the Senate had considered an SC nominee in that situation. Even McConnell mentioned this. So the Senate's current decision isn't as hypocritical as it may seem.

And despite what some journalists would have you believe, this was not some excuse thought up on the spot after RBG's death. Culture of Life quoted several Republican senators below who gave this exact reasoning for blocking Garland's nomination.

An already crazy year is going to get crazier.

I saw this yesterday evening. Although I disagreed with Justice Ginsburg's views on a wide range of issues -- and primarily abortion -- she was doubtless, in many areas, an admirable proponent for women's equality, especially in her pre-Court career. Hopefully, as a society, we can remember her and memorialize her in the future for the issues on which she was right.

I thought that argument was bad in 2016, and I think it's bad today. The Thurmond/Biden rule is silly. In 2016, I said on the offsite board that the Senate should permit President Obama to make a recess appointment but that it should withhold consent on a permanent justice, as a matter of political discretion, until the conclusion of the presidential election. The only principle that counts here is the Constitution's principle: the President submits nominees to the Senate, and the Senate consents to them if it deems them suitable for the office.

I also don't think the hypocrisy argument is as strong as it seems. Some Republican senators, no doubt, said the Senate should never confirm a Supreme Court justice in a presidential election year. Other Republican senators, on the other hand, took a more nuanced position: when the White House and the Senate are divided, they should defer to the American people in an approaching election.

Richard Burr: "The American people deserve a voice in the nomination of the next Supreme Court Justice. This appointment could easily tip the balance of the court in a direction not supported by the American people as evidenced by 2014’s election results giving Republicans both the Senate and House."

Dan Coats: "The last time a Supreme Court justice was nominated to the Court in a presidential election year and confirmed by a Senate controlled by the opposing party was 1888, when President Grover Cleveland nominated Justice Melville Fuller to be Chief Justice."

Joni Ernst: "This is not about any particular nominee; rather this is about giving the American people a voice. Folks are frustrated with Washington, and are fed up with President Obama’s failed policies and endless power grabs. We saw this frustration embodied in 2014 when voters made their voices heard and elected a Republican majority in the Senate."

Jeff Flake: "One would have to go back more than a century to find a scenario where a president’s nominee for the Supreme Court was confirmed by the opposition party in the Senate when the vacancy occurred during an election year. I'm not about to break new ground in the Senate."

Orrin Hatch: "Given that the American people have elected a president and a Senate majority with drastically different views on the nature of legitimate constitutional government — a split decision of sorts — it seems appropriate to let 2016 voters decide which of two very different paths the Supreme Court should take."

John McCain: "I believe the American people must have a voice in the direction of the Supreme Court by electing a new president. The last time the American people spoke, they elected a Republican majority to the Senate to act as a ‘check and balance’ on President Obama’s liberal agenda – a responsibility I cannot ignore. We must allow the people to play a role in selecting the next lifetime appointment to the Supreme Court."

Tim Scott: "The last time a majority of the American people went to the polls, they elected conservatives and a Republican Senate to be a check-and-balance to President Obama and his agenda. I believe that my duty is to the people of South Carolina; not to the President. As a result, I will not consider any Supreme Court nominee until after the country has elected our next president in November and they have taken office in January 2017."

John Thune: "The Senate Republican majority was elected to be a check and balance to President Obama."

https://ballotpedia.org/U.S._Senators_on_the_nomination_of_Merrick_Garland

Right now, the White House and the Senate are not divided. The American people elected Republicans to control both. Exercising the discretion the Constitution gives them, they're certainly free to fill the Supreme Court vacancy. Will there be a political price to pay? Possibly. But they're not under any duty to adhere to a rule that's extra-constitutional and whose formulation some senators expressed too broadly.

Interesting. I remember the controversy around Garland's nomination well, but I don't remember this side of it. Food for thought.

I think that we are at better than even odds that the Court is going to get packed, with all the massive division that will follow that. In terms of the election, especially if Trump nominates another white guy (I'd love to see Barrett, and I'd be absolutely ecstatic to see Elrod as my number one choice, but I would not put it past him at all to bumble the pick again), I cannot see this as doing anything but greatly helping Biden. The Democrats and the media are going to go all-in on this as some kind of 'abuse of power' and it is going to sway votes. I really cannot see Biden losing minus an active health/debate meltdown or serious late-breaking scandal with Hunter at this point-and keeping the Senate seems like an even harder lift now, at least a few of the vulnerable Senators are going to have to vote to confirm, I am thinking of Gardner in particular.

I have legitimate fears for the country in a packed-court situation, but I think we are going in that direction. In a normal polity, this would really be a generational opportunity to right the ship, now, it might capsize it. The last time the Court was on the verge of this kind of potential change was 1987, and we got Borking from that, something completely without precedent that set the stage for the record levels of partisan animosity and division that we have gotten to today. I shudder to see what the reaction will be this time.

I am rather with CoL on this-I think that the no election-year vacancy argument was a silly one, but I had no issue whatsoever with McConnell blocking the nomination, I just think he ought to have had it formally voted down rather than having hearings-I think the Senate was fully in its rights to do so, and I think they are in their rights to confirm this one as well.

It will most certainly be played up to the extreme as hypocrisy in the media, however, with some basis for justification, but not near as much as I imagine it will be portrayed as.

Jefferson Davis was wounded in action fighting for the United States during the Mexican-American war. I have no intention of memorializing him based on that fact rather than his role in the Confederacy and the promotion of slavery.

I will not celebrate her death-I do not think we should celebrate any death-but I will not memorialize someone who championed jurisprudence hostile to both the Constitution and human life. A few flashes of good do not outweigh an overwhelming wave of bad.

Hi guys, here are your updated stocks. If you want to join the stock market, please let me know. Now’s the time to invest in your or other people’s companies, buy power ups, buy shares, sell shares, register with a bank, or just invest in your companies. Anyways, here are your stonks, if you guys have any questions please let me know

CELEBRATING 1000 READS!
This stock market will be for companies from nations in the Labyrinth’s embassy regions to expand and make more money. Through the stock market, values will determine investments and due to the wide accessibility of this stock market, companies are guaranteed to make at least some sort of profit. The number besides the company is it’s value in the stock market, one point is equal to 1 million Jilars. The money companies earn will not come from the state, instead, they will come from the revenue made from their products, locations, or to put it simply, from the client. The + or - sign besides the companies indicate whether the company’s value has risen or fallen since last week’s report. The number besides the + or - signs indicates by exactly how much it rose or fell.
In addition, every company on the stock market will get a weekly pay of 100 million Jilars. 85% of the stock market’s profits will go to the companies while 15% will go to PeePeePooPooCaCa. The nation with the largest company in each sector of the market receives a trading card, nations are limited to one card. The card is uncommon if the sector has less than five different nations, rare if it has more than five but less than ten, and epic/legendary if the sector has more than 10 nations.
Every investment by a nation into a company that doesn’t belong to them will be rewarded with karma points. The nation receives 1k for an investment lower than 500 million dollars, 2k for an investment between 500 million and 999,999,999, and 3k for an investment above 1 billion. Karma points are transferred to stock points and are added onto the nation’s companies’ values.
Nations can also buy power ups to boost companies’ values. There shall be four original power ups, but more can be added by other nations if Peepeepoopoocaca approves of them. The creator of a new power up can use it for free the first time he or she wants it. Otherwise, all nations wishing to buy a power up should pay its fee using the nation’s companies’ stock points. The nation does not have a bought power up anymore if he or she don’t pay the power up’s renewal fee in time, or Peepeepoopoocaca decides to terminate the nation’s power up privilege. All power ups shall be bought in the shop down below.
In addition to the karma points system, there will also be another type of external investment. They’re called shares, which essentially means that the company you invest in has to repay you in the form of a dividend. A dividend is calculated using a percentage system, which means that a nation’s share is also it’s dividend. For example, if a nation holds a 20% share of a company, then the company being invested in needs to give the shareholder 20% of weekly profits. So if that company makes 10k points in a week, 2k go to the shareholder. Dividends and shares investments are overall pretty good as they don’t have to be renewed as frequently as karma investments, but they require more negotiation, as the shareholder nation and company representative nation both need to agree on the terms of the investment. The shareholder now possesses a share in said company, and they can sell shares whenever they feel they don’t need said share anymore, for example, when a company’s doing poorly. Shares that are sold on the market are registered as initial public offerings, or IPOs. The number in brackets besides the listed shares down below is the current revenue being made by that company’s share, which is the same as the share price. The whole point of buying and seeking shares is to buy at low prices, and sell at high prices whenever the stockholder honks it’s right.
There will be banks stationed across PPPPCC and elsewhere that will help to fund and monetarily aid the companies in the stock market. A good way to do this will be through loans, which will be eventually paid back by interest. To buy a loan, first choose a bank in which you will form a partnership with and buy loans from them in the future. This bank is now called your ‘partnership bank’. Now, specify the amount of money that will be required to fund the buyer’s project(s), and then, you’re expected to pay back a certain amount of interest within a certain time span. One credit point is equal to 100 stock points and vice versa. On top of this, companies will be able to deposit any money (aka stock points) they currently posses to the bank, and withdraw it whenever they please. As a side note, you’re allowed to change your partnership bank whenever you want, but you have to make an agreement with both banks.
This stock market’s plan is to give companies a fair chance and open up in new lands with new markets and new opportunities. This will never be a stock market established due to corporate greed. We shall never deny a guest, even the most ridiculous request.

For a place to discuss the stock market, ask questions, roleplay scenarios with your companies, and arrange further deals, create an alternate account or submit Embassy requests and join the Inter regional stock market region.

Hello all!

Horatius Cocles and Godbelt

HAPPY INTERNATIONAL DAY OF PEACE

Today is the International Day of Peace. Let us come together in reflection, hope and prayer for a world with less violence, conflict and injustice and one where peace, justice and kindness rule.

For those of you who are Christians, I exhort you you this:

Jesus said, ‘Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God’ - Matthew 5:9.

Dear God,
In a world so full of conflict and division and in a world where hope can often feel distant, we come together, as members of the body of Christ to pray for those that find themselves in situations of violence, conflict and injustice, they they may find peace and rest in you. We pray for the rulers of the world, that they may work to end war and conflict and work for the good of all. We pray that the church may be a beacon of hope, light and justice for all the world. We pray for the protection and safety of those who work for peace and the elimination of violence often placing their own lives at risk to save those of others. We pray that you can give us the wisdom, strength and guidance to follow Jesus’ words and actions to be peacemakers in the world. We pray that as a region we can be an example of this teaching through creating peace within our region, serving as an example to others and furthering the cause of peace in NationStates. God we pray that your will for peace may be done on earth as it is in heaven and for the soon return of your son, Jesus Christ, where we will see an end to suffering and the flourishing peace. We say this prayer in the name of our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ.
Amen.

And for all of us, Christian and non-Christian alike.

I would also like to share an incredible campaigner for peace and justice. Eleanor Roosevelt was the First Lady of the United States from 1933-1946, served as the US Representative to the United Nations, oversaw the drafting of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and was a prominent campaigner for youth, women and racial minorities in the United States. She was a woman far ahead of her time whose resolve and influence has fundamentally changed the world for the better.

This quote by Eleanor Roosevelt has been a favourite of mine for many years. I hope it inspires you, as it does me, on this important day.

‘It isn’t enough to talk about peace. One must believe in it. And it isn’t enough to believe in it. One must work at it.’

Blessings to you all on this important day.

Hope all is well.

Observations from the last month from within the battleground of North Carolina:
Trump will win the state more narrowly than in 2016.
Governor Cooper will win re-election.
The Tillis-Cunningham senate race is a toss-up.

In other news I would be for the Republicans filling the vacancy left by RBG, just because I know the democrats wouldn't appoint a prolife judge. It would be a bit hypocritical given how they treated Merritt Garland in 2016.

Lastly, I hope the Houston NSers stay safe with TS Beta bearing down on the gulf coast.

I'll return again in a month, stay safe in this weird world.

Just out of curiosity for Z-day what's your favourite strategy?

I usually just go the military route and destroy as many zombies as possible.

Hello all! The nation of Godbelt is new to this region. We are a pro-life nation with a mostly conservative viewpoint. Our nation is God-based. We pray all is well with other nations in this region and we are excited to become more involved! Thank you for your time!

United massachusetts is a zombie-makin' machine, generally. Some of the others like to heal zombies.

Hello!

I am a representative of the Republic of Conservative Nations, here to make contact with you as an embassy region and friend of ours.

As you may know, N-Day -- that great, annual sitewide Nuclear Apocalypse -- is likely set to begin at the end of this week. We at the RCN have led the Army of Freedom through three N-Days, and will once again launch this exciting faction.

Check out our AOF N-Day Guide here:

  1. Join the LinkAOF Discord for N-Day⁵ orders and communication.
This is how all orders will be disseminated. Utilizing the Discord will enable you to more fully enjoy and deploy during N-Day. The AOF Discord is always a fun place to be; the hectic and frantic nature of nuclear warfare has led to memorable moments for our members.

  2. Do not attack unless ordered, and only attack when and where ordered.
Rogue nations can destroy a faction by attacking against or in contradiction to orders, drawing us into battle on undesired fronts. Don't be that guy. Strict adherance to orders is crucial to ensure a successful N-Day for the Army of Freedom.

  3. Shield production is the priority during N-Day.
🛡️ Strategic specialists must focus on building shields exclusively.
🛡️ Economic specialists should focus on building shields -- unless specifically ordered otherwise.
☢️ Military specialists must focus on building nukes exclusively.

  4. Recruit your friends and region-mates to the Army of Freedom!
The more, the merrier! We would love to have a record amount of fighters in the AOF this year, and you can help make that a reality. In addition, we are seeking Non-Aggression Pacts with a variety of other factions, which will help to protect our flanks during N-Day; if you can assist with this as well, contact New waldensia.

Every N-Day, we award medals to AOF members. Everyone receives a Service Medal, but you may also be eligible for a host of others, all the way up to the Medal of Honor! Check out the last medals here:

We would like to invite any and all to participate. Last year, we had the eighth most nations, over 200, in our faction, and we'd love to beat that this year. The more, the merrier!

So whether as individual nations or officially as a region, we're extending the invitation to you to become members of our Army of Freedom N-Day faction. If you have specific questions, you can contact our President, New waldensia.

Always go for the cure.

I am somewhat conflicted about Barrett. On the one hand, I deeply admire her religious convictions. The comment by Sen. Feinstein about “dogma lives loudly within you and that is a concern” was utterly repulsive and reminded me about the anti catholic prejudice that many Catholics had to overcome in the early stages of this country. On the other hand, I worry about her possible rulings regarding campaign finance, labor protection and environmental issues.

Downtown Houston has been flooded in the south and southeast areas. Fortunately, I live outside the Houston city limits in the NW area. I remember when Houston flooded due to Harvey, not a good time.

I’m still awaiting an explanation on how it’s opposed to women’s rights to hire a black clerk every now and then. Was the country so racist while men had unanimous rule that women needed their fair share?
