Yeah, I've seen some people on YouTube wearing this necklace:

Where they are adhering to what they call Odinism:

Although I can't see how that can be any better than Christianity, as a religion and meaning of life. I mean I've studied Norse mythology for a shorter period at school, and I can only see it as that, as a mythology and nothing more.

You're essentially right, I should have been more clear that what I said only applied theoretically to "immigrants" who have not yet immigrated. Immigrants already inside the country do have such guarantees.

I knew that Democrats - not just at the individual level, but at the state level - were growing disillusioned with the increasingly-extreme position that the party leadership has taken on abortion. But I hadn't heard of this group yet. Awesome!

I am a DFLA member.

Why on earth would they host a rally in Lansing, Michigan?

God of power and mercy,
you destroy war and put down earthly pride.
Banish violence from our midst and wipe away our tears,
that we may all deserve to be called your sons
and daughters.
Keep in your mercy those men and women
who have died in the cause of freedom
and bring them safely
into your kingdom of justice and peace.
We ask this though Jesus Christ our Lord.

Amen.

The way you word your words makes a lot of people count under that prayer.

Happy Feast of Augustine of Canterbury! The Blessed Man who made the English not Irish and the Irish English, at least in ecclesiastical matters.

I doubt folk taking on this religion are making a side-by-side comparison with Christianity, but rather are mostly seeking to
assert a sense of individuality or seeking attention by making a point of taking a religion that others won't take seriously by default.

It's basically an "I'm special look at me" kind of deal, not a "I believe that I've found some deeper spiritual truth" thing, I reckon.

I'm sure there's some sincere Odin-worshippers out there as well, of course, but I suspect that a large proportion of converts are in it out of a desire to be deliberately different rather than genuine faith in Odin. Either that or a more general spiritual "all religions are true as each other, so I'm symbolically picking this one" sort of thing.

Getting by. I lost a younger cousin last month and I'm going through a huge life change. Hoping to find a job soon.

Very sorry to hear about your cousin, that's bound to be tough going through. I hope you'll get by with the change well enough.

Are you still considering joining the Jesuits, if I recall correctly?

Thanks man.

Well it's still in the works, but if I ever do get to join the Jesuits, I'm not joining the Philippine Province that's for sure. An elderly Jesuit friend suggested against it.

How about you? Last time I remember you also had plans

Glad your still interested, why not come to Ireland and join the Irish Jesuits instead:P

I'm still looking at the Passionists, I'm actually going to a vocations weekend on Friday so still very much attracted to their congregation. It's a slow going process but still determined.

Say, how're the Jesuits in Ireland doing? I have this Jesuit Brother friend who had his tertianship in Dublin. He did some teaching on the side at some boarding school. According to him he felt the very anti-clerical Irish climate even in that school, like they actually don't trust priests.

Oh cool to hear! I'll be praying for that. How're the Passionists in the vocations side of things?

The Jesuits would have a bit of presence here, but I think most of them are either in Dublin or Galway, none in the North of Ireland that I know of. Perhaps they may have 10-15 priests here. Vocations I think they are having trouble compared to the Dioceses and Orders, so I'm sure they are eager for anyone who's interested. Anti-clericalism is rife in the south of Ireland, and distrust is of course down to the abuse crisis, which scarred the Church terribly. Of course this is also the result of a more secular culture as well.

Thanks for the prayers, the Passionists is a small congregation in Ireland but they have five students, four for priesthood and one training to be a brother. I'm told that there will be, I think, five others at this vocation weekend so I'd say the Passionists are doing well, all things considered.

Here's the Irish Jesuit Website if your more curious about them: https://www.jesuit.ie/

Yeah, I believe you're right. I can agree on that.

I’ve had enough of JK Rowling. The books were good but it went downhill after that.

Way, way downhill.

I don’t want her reality, but I’m increasingly afraid that’s already reality.

I find her pretty funny, to be honest. Her books are good, though not the best books of their sort by a long shot. She's basically just a quite good author that has managed to hit the right moment in time to become fantastically rich. Good on her for that. And now, she's keeping herself in the public eye with the occasional tweet. That's fine too.

Her tweets annoy me, I'm not a fan of her politics but that's not enough to complain about on its own, but she expresses it in especially annoying ways, I find.

I hate all of her work for that matter, but that doesn't mean I don't respect her or even see her as a great writer and admireable person.
