luckily i found that out pretty quickly

I have no idea why most translations of the Kojiki either opt to use ancient Japanese (i.e Payasi instead of Hayashi) or literal English translations (i.e Izumo becomes "Bellowing Clouds"). It seems needlessly obtuse or self-satisfying. I would be all for a compendium that went into the etymological origins of kami and provincial names, but they need to decide whether they want to make a book on philology or a translation of a national classic.

personally i wouldn't be bothered by the former

thing is i've only ever encountered the latter, and i want to read the whole work without being grossed out
