Glim firebeard wrote:OOC:
Tatarica/Dispatch, what happens if two nations attack the same province in the same update? As you might have guessed, Dorwinion was to be my next target. Also, can we conduct diplomacy with the NPC nations between updates, or will you only update their actions on actual update days? Glim might want to persuade his kinsmen to direct their efforts elsewhere, in exchange for future support :)

OOC:
From the FAQ at point 14, subpoint 4:
"If two nations want to attack the same province, the one that posted first gets priority over the other (so the other will actually attack the first nation and their newly conquered garrison)."

If you plan to attack a province another kingdom already posted an attack on, then, considering they are winning the fight against the garrison, you will attack the new garrison plus the remainder of the other kingdom's army from after their previous fight.

And come to think at this particular aspect, perhaps it is more fair for the defending army not to participate with 100% garrison and 100% remaining forces, but with something like 100% garrison and 'injured' soldiers (50% or 80% effectiveness) considering that his forces already had a battle.

Now, for your actual circumstances, the NPC already has priority and you have to decide if you want to attack the Dorwinion province that would be, if all things continue like this, under a dwarvish rule.

To answer the latter part of your question, that is something I haven't given that much thought. But as players can interact with players for 6 days before the next update, then it is only fair for the players to interact among themselves and with the NPCs. I would probably not post other NPC-NPC interactions than what I already posted, but the NPCs can interact with the players and can reply back and / or change their minds.

Dear Members,

UPDATE 1 of the Middle Earth Roleplay has been posted !

It is accessible via the following link:

** REMEMBER! ON EACH THREE UPDATES YOU GET AN INFLUX OF UNITS **

FROM THE OLD UPDATE... :

Dark Wood Orcs:
At the first darkness of day, Grumtash the Hollow marvelled at his ingenuity - his precarious alliance with the spiderling beasts in Mirkwood paid off - a win-win situation for which the arachnids reaped significant results and the orcs could devise other plans to expand; and they had where to expand ... the planes of Southern Mirkwood looked particularly intriguing, but so did any of the other adjacent realms.

Before turning his eyes to outside his current borders, Grumtash had one other hollow item on his agenda: a last sacrifice to the arachnids, in the form of a mass feast with the people of Woodmen-town, deep in Western Mirkwood...

Doom'dr'thak:
Expanding in the southernmost barbaric realms proved to be extremely costing for Doom'dr'thak, a significant kingdom with roots at the bottom of the Mountains of Shadow.

Bru'tak Gumdum, son of late ruler and hero Mortok Gumdum (killed in an unsuccessful raid on a fortified position) gathered all the scattered orcs after that devastating blow and is now considered to be in a very good position, having already centralized and organized the main bulk of his armies. An astonishing feat to any accounts, considering that we're talking about Orcs ...

But he still needs some additional time. There are still things to be done before considering expanding again.

East Rho-Drukars:
Glodurin of Eastern Rhovanion comes from a distant lineage of dwarfish rulers from the Iron Hills. Unfortunately, his once proud dominion of dwarves was cut short by incompetence, greed and inside and outside turmoils for a few generations, effectivelly cutting down his realm to what's now around Eastern Rhovanion.

But Glodurin is nothing like his fathers before him. As a matter of fact, the dwarves around Glodurin have high hopes that, during his reign they will get back what's ... rightfully theirs.

Fangorn Dwarves:
Near the Gap of Isen, in the Fangorn forest, lied the realm of Bildur the Smither, a dwarf of unknown origins. But as the name suggests, he prides himself with his works, and there isn't a living soul that touched his works and hasn't declared in might that he's the greatest Master of Smithing of this Age.

Full of riches, he amassed great armies and none know if his thoughts darkened ... if perfect jewellery or deadly war machines will start to pour out of his Smithing fields of Fangorn ... at the foothill of the Misty Mountains.

Free people of Lamedon:
Andorgor the Brave looked on his bed chamber window and saw vast, rich realms to the South, North and East. Lamedon was known to be a key region, fortuitous in its position and bestowed with a great gene pool of capable men. Capable to work the fields and capable to bear arms, in need.

Today, the men work the fields but ... who knows what tomorrow brings?

Remnants of Old Religion:
In Andrast the fires burn brigth, day and night.

Gruumsh the Infernal, some sort of deity in the eyes of the living souls in Andrast, is worshipped by a province-wide cult of orcs, humans and other curiously shaped beasts. His words come out as fireballs and move the masses to a frenzy, making his armies merciless and fanatical. One wonders what his future plans are ...

No army movements

Rhudaur Folk:
King Arundar of Rhudaur had no time for pleasantries. Swearing allegiance to the Witch King of Angmar is one of his priorities.
"Send a raven with the following message to the Witch King of Angmar", he said to one of his commanders. The letter states:

"Mighty Witch King of Angmar,

I, Arundar the 1st, King of Rhudaur, pledge loyalty to your might and am ready to heed your calls in times of need.
Know that you have my undying support, and, until such time arrives, we will task ourselves with expanding.
All in the name of the Mighty Kingdom of Angmar.

Signed,
Arundar the 1st,
King of Rhudaur"

At this point in time, King Arundar's words were sincere ...

The Dominion of Glim Firebeard
Glim's eyes scanned across the assembled warbands of Dwarves. It has been many long years since the last warhost of this size was assembled, and he was keenly admiring his kinsmen. After finishing his inspection, he raises his waraxe to silence the Dwarves..

'My kinsmen!' he shouted. 'Fer too long we 'ave watched tha world change aroond us, nae caring aboot anything aside from what concerned us. Those days are over! Today we set out ta build a Kingdom worthy of our people. Today we march ta war!'

As one the Dwarves roared their approval at their leader. The roaring echoed in the narrow mountain valley that led to the Dwarf Hold, until it sounded like the mountains themselves were roaring.
-----
The offensive had been in the works for a while now. Favours were called in from distant relatives, alliances formed with the various local clans, until sufficient forces could be mustered. This initial campaign would ultimately determine whether Glim would lead his people to greatness or obscurity in the annals of history. The first objective was to march south through Northern Rhovanion and claim Middle Rhovanion. Scouts had sent reports of a minor Dwarven realm in Eastern Rhovanion, led by a similarly ambitious leader, and already Glim was concerned about conflicting objectives. As such, messengers had been dispatched to Glodurin of Eastern Rhovanion, bringing a greeting from Glim:

Tae Master Glodurin of Eastern Rhovanion!

Greetings ta ye. As yer read this message, ah expect ta be feasting in the newly conquered land of Middle Rhovanion. My scouts have heard tales of the greatness of yer people, and ah hereby extend ta ye, an invitation ta discuss tha future of our two realms. If ye were to join me in Middle Rhovanion, perhaps we might settle on a mutually beneficial course of action - or at the very least share ale and the stories of our ancestors!

Ah expect ta see ya soon,

- Glim Firebeard

The only other point of concern for the Dwarf King was the rumours of Orcs stirring in Mirkwood. Naturally concerned about the forest on its own, the last thing he needed right now would be an Orcish warband showing up on his doorstep while he was busy carving out an empire. As such, the best runners and scouts available were sent into Mirkwood in the hopes of learning the whereabouts of the Orcs, and perhaps gauging their intentions.

----
1000 Dwarves led by Glim Firebeard marching through Northern Rhovanion and attacking Middle Rhovanion.
Ambassador sent to Glodurin of Eastern Rhovanion (NPC), inviting him to discuss matters of state with Glim Firebeard in the (hopefully) newly conquered province.
Scouts sent into Mirkwood to search for the Dark Wood Orcs (NPC), and perhaps learn a thing or two about their plans.

Maedhros:
Concerned about the size of his realm, Maedhros' main goal was to expand. So it was decided that his initial move would be to move over Southern Arthedain with 1000 soldiers.

----
Attack Southern Arthedain with 1000 soldiers

Angmar:
The Witch King of Angmar hisses at one of his servants. "Send a message to this so called King of Rhuadar. Tell him his oath of allegiance is accepted. And get as much information on him as possible. This type of greed is prone to cause him to betray us."

Letter to King Arundar of Rhudaur
Man King of Rhudar, King Arundar the first,
Your oath of allegiance has been noted. We will hold you true to your word. Your priorities are to attack any elves on sight. Otherwise, you may mostly do as you wish, though do not interfere with the matters of my master.
Signed,
Gothmog of Gundabad, lieutenant of Angmar.

Alliance of Haradrim and Ithilien Rangers:
Eowyn picked at her nails nervously, waiting for her husband to come back. Something was wrong with Faramir, and she didn't know what to do about it.

Swirling clouds of dust rose high into the evening air as dozens of calloused, gnarled, leathery feet pounded the ground. The Mumakil were going to war. Faramir contemplated the scene from a rocky outlook. It was strange--you would never guess that these humongous, lumbering animals received all their ferocious energy from such a small and simple thing; the lowly peanut.

This last troop of Mumakil completed the forces that Ithilien had already mobilized. Thanks to their pact with several tribes of Haradrim, Faramir's forces were ready to conquer the world. Or at least die trying.
The first step was to conquer some of the lands to the north. We need more peanut growing fields! reasoned Faramir, which made his wife worry all the more.

1000 humans attack Anorien and another 1000 attack Dagorlad.

The Noldorin Kingdom of Eregion:
Lord Glorfindel, ruler of the renewed Noldorin Kingdom, sat in thought, in the fortified camp that the elves had made near the ruins of Ost-in-Edhil. That great city where elves and dwarves had come together, ruled by Celebrimbor, the forger of the Rings of Power, had been destroyed by the forces of evil. They would rebuild it, in time, but first there was the matter of war. The Witch-King of Angmar, whom Glorfindel himself had prophesied that no man would fell him, had returned, and he would draw the forces of men and orcs to the north to his banners. There was no doubt that they would dwell in piece for long.

Glorfindel looked up, at the ever-waving banners of the elves, gold, silver and blue, radiant stars in the sky of blue. He only had 1,000 Elves under his command, and while the elves were mighty, their strength had waned much after the First Age. But here, in Eregion, and in other elven strongholds, remnants, glimpses of that ancient fury and might still remained. In order for evil to be defeated, good must assemble, and for that, he needed allies.

And so, an emissary was sent out, to the kingdom of Maedhros in Eryn Vorn and Cardolan, to seek out their leader and propose an alliance.
The emissary, after a few hour's ride, arrived at the court of Maedhros the Tall. Gaining admittance, he bowed before the elven ruler and said, "My lord Maedhros, I bring word and greeting from Lord Glorfindel of Eregion."

NPC talk and decisions for next update:

Dark Wood Orcs:
After a full week of dark feasts and human sacrifices there was nothing left of Woodmen Town, the small village that hosted the famous annual fair; the trees were cut down, the huts burned and the poor souls from there suffered in agony while being forced to serve both as entertainment and as training targets for the soldiers in Grumtash's army. Until they got devoured by the spiderlings.

This set of actions steamed Grumtash into deciding it was time to ramp up the "game" - another woodmen settlement located not far away, Rhosgobel City, would be the next logical target. Conquering that would bring the whole Southern Mirkwood realm under Grumtash direct control. And from there ...

----
Send all forces to attack Southern Mirkwood

Doom'dr'thak:
Bru'tak Gumdum was a pretty good judge of character, and able to delegate command to those worthy. He was also an excellent strategist and had a good plan for expansion; moreever, his plan was not to make the same mistakes of his father and thus to respect the southernmost lands. Orcs are simply not comfortable enough fighting in those conditions.

Not expanding in the south would mean his eyes have to turn in the other directions; with West and North seeming to be the most logical directions.

In the East, before reaching the delta also known as Ethir Anduin, lie the fields of Near Harad, Sutherland and Harondor. And part of those realms are already claimed, his intelligence informs him.

In North, on the other side of the mountain, the realms of Nurn and Upper Nurn can provide sustainable defenses, if Bru'tak Gumdum would be able to conquer them. And what better time to test his newly shaped armies than now? If his intelligence reports are correct, before being able to claim Upper Nurn his armies would clash with a small garrison of humans right after crossing the Southern Pass.

Between West and North, North seems to pique more the interest the ruler of the Doom'dr'thaks, Gumdum. To be able to secure an expansion to the North, the West needed to be free of turmoils. With that in mind, and with the armies set to march towards Upper Nurn, Gumdum wanted to reach the human ruler of Harondor and propose a non agression pact, an action that he deemed to be beneficial to both parties.

Send an envoy bearing gifts to the one called Faramir of the Allied States, and add the following scroll:

"Ruler of the Allied States,

Word of your achievements, courage and great strength has reached my ears and delighted me. I would need such an ally on my side, one with whom I could share the spoils of victory as our unstoppable forces conquer land after land and extend our empires to vast proportions.

We can rule apart but together we can accomplish much, much more. To show my commitment, I have brought some gifts and this Non-Aggression pact that already bears my signature. It is a standard act of commitment to a cause, and a first step towards a conciliation between our two cultures.

I would ask you to sign it. "

And with that, the march towards Upper Nurn began.

----
Send all forces to attack Upper Nurn
Send an envoy with a Non-Aggression-Pact request to the Alliance of Haradrim and Ithilien Rangers

East Rho-Drukars:
Glodurin received word from this Dwarf of Withered Heath, now right at the doorstep of his empire. Worrisome news, when a messanger arrives bearing good tidings yet behind him lies an army.

Glodurin did not trust anyone else, be him elf, be him orc, be him human and especially be him dwarf. Redressing his dominion was hard enough before, but now with another ruler knocking on his doorstep he has to thread lightly.

" By me beard, first order is show everyone else dat tha Rho-Drukars mean business by conquerin' Dorwinion. Second order ta show common curtosy by joining dis king in Middle Rhovanion. Ken be ally and nae enemy. Third Order ta prepare the army dat wou be in Dorwinion ta come and aid me in case of things goin hell. "

----
Send all forces to attack Dorwinion
Go and meet Glim Firebeard in Middle Rhovanion

Fangorn Dwarves:
There was a great celebration in Fangorn, as the armies of Bildur the Smither marched towards the Gap of Isen. The plans for expansion have already begun, and the mountain before the Gap has a lot of potential when it comes to unexplored resources. A settlement can be built here, and can be transformed into a marvel of ingenuousity and industrialization.

Bildur knew that his actions would not be left unquestioned, so he made sure to appease those around him by sending personally hand-crafted jewlery to the rulers of the Noldorin Kingdom of Eregion, the Rhudaur Folk, the orcs of Mirkwood and those of the Old Religion and to the humans of the Alliance of Haradrim and Ithilien Rangers.

A rich hand can secure allies, he thought.

Send all forces to attack Gap of Isen
Send gifts to the Noldorin Kingdom of Eregion, the Alliance of Haradrim and Ithilien Rangers, the Rhudaur Folk, the Dark Wood Orcs and to the Remnants of Old Religion

Free people of Lamedon:
Andorgor the Brave received word that in Belfalas a small dispatch of orcs, probably from Andrast, roamed the countryside and destroy the villages in their way.

"A mighty ruler has to step in, and rescue the realm", Andorgor thought. "Let us march forward towards Belfalas, and thus set up a perimeter of defense from one side of the mountain to the sea".

"Send word to the Remnants of the Old Religion, advising them not to cross boundaries and attack unprovoked unless they themselves want to be dragged into a war. As we are the protectors of these realms, our duties lie towards these realms and to the well being of those inhabiting them, be them humans, be them orcs or be them animals of the nature, as long as we all live in peace", Andorgor also said.

----
Send all forces to attack Belfalas
Send a dispatch to the Remnants of Old Religion, advising to stop the uncalled attacks

Remnants of Old Religion:

There is not known what Gruumsh the Infernal, the deity worshipped by the people of Andrast, plans to do in the next days, although a large contingent of forces were amassed at The Stones, a landmark in the North of the realm.

----
All forces are sent at the North of the province, for a possible attack of a nearby province.

Rhudaur Folk:
King Arundar of Rhudaur received the letter from the Witch King of Angmar, confirming the Alliance. What demands have been made will be respected. The elvish settlements on the west are easy pickings for his mighty army of 1500 well-trained humans, and Eastern Arthedain is to be their first target.

This also means a vigilent watch on the Southern boundaries, where the Noldorin Elves of Eregion have established their Kingdom. And more than that, to better secure the South a letter has to be written and sent to Lord Glorfindel. The letter stated the following:

"
Lord Glorfindel,

Enemies are easy to make in today's world, and friends come as a rarity. Let us not cross paths and let the borders between our two nations remain in peace and harmony. I have no quarrels with no Elf, and my soldiers want no high-born blood on their hands. Let us raise a cup together towards peace and understanding!

King Arundar the First,
Ruler of Rhudaur
"

Send all forces to attack Eastern Arthedain
Send a peace-bearing envoy towards the Noldorin Kingdom of Eregion

OOC:

Just to make it clear for everyone, you can post how many times you want between two updates, I will take all your posts and add them to the update. The only thing you have to keep in mind is that, even if I'll add all your posts, I will ACT just on your LAST attack order post. So, for example, if you write a 1st post with IC cordial stuff with no attack orders, your 2nd with attack orders, 3rd with cordial stuff again, 4th with cordial stuff and attack orders, at update I will add all the cordial stuff and only the last attack order, from day four.

Glim firebeard

IC:
Glim made the proper arrangements for receiving Glodurin. He had every intention of giving the Dwarf Lord a good impression, but naturally the display was also intended to impress upon the Dwarf that Glim was by far the richest and most powerful of the two Dwarves. Columns of well-armoured Royal Guards flanked the pathway to Glim's lavishly decorated tent, used only when the Dwarves were campaigning. Glim was standing at the edge of the camp, ready to greet Glodurin in person.

'Och, Lord Glodurin, ah bid ye welcome ta me humble encampment. If only we had more time to prepare a proper feast. Nae matter, ah do hope that the roast boar will suffice to sate yer hunger, m'friend.'.

-----

After the feasting was over, Glim found it prudent to commence the more complicated diplomatic matters at hand.

'Ah'll just cut right ta the chase here, Glodurin. We're both Dwarves of action, after all. Ah understand ye've got yer sights set on Dorwinion. As ye might have been able ta tell, that's exactly where me and the lads were heading next. It would be, ah, unfortunate if we were ta have a conflict o' interests over such a small matter.'

Glim fixed his eyes on Glodurin's as he spoke, wanting to maintain an air of friendliness while making sure that Glodurin understood how serious he was.

'Ah would like ta see our two nations united against our foes. Mah runners inform me of Orcs stirring in ol' Mirkwood, and ahm sure ye'll have heard about the expansion of the Humans to the south. Enemies might yet lurk in Mordor, and so time is not on our side. If ye were ta turn yer attentions, say, tawards Western Rhovanion or the Horse Plains, not only would ya secure yer borders before any Orcs or Humans claim them, but ye'd have made a new ally in the Firebeard clan. Ah'd be willing ta swear an Oath o' Eternal Friendship with ye.'

Glim took a moment to stroke his beard before continuing. He was hoping Glodurin wasn't as stubborn as he had been told.

'Naturally, ah can understand that ye might not be wanting ta give up yer goals in Dorwinion. Understand, but not support. Ah would perhaps be forced to seek friends elsewhere, and instead of being owed ah favour, ye might find yerself on yer own.'

With that, he took a sip of ale from the mug in front of him, and waited for Glodurin's reply.

OOC:
Alliance proposed to the East Rho-Drukars, on the condition that they turn their army around and let Glim's forces take Dorwinion.
If the Alliance is accepted, attack Dorwinion with 880 Dwarves led by Glim, then rotate the survivors back to Middle Rhovanion.
If the Alliance is rejected, attack Western Rhovanion with 880 Dwarves led by Glim.
(I'll post an update before Saturday with some other things I want to do, IE scout reports from Mirkwood and sending emissaries to some other nations.)

Glim firebeard

OOC:

Forgot to edit one of the lines it seems. Obviously can't rotate forces back after the potential attack on Dorwinion, so just ignore that part.

IC:

East Rho-Drukars:

Upon arriving in Middle Rhovanion at the camp where Glim the Dwarf established a meeting between the two, Glodurin felt right from the start the pompous magnificence of the display but decided to appear completely unmoved and emotionally unaffected - even if what he saw deeply perturbed him.

"O Lord Glim, 'tis great joy ta have ya in person in front of me. Even if ta preparations leave me wantin'. 'Tis a camp, after all."

And with that, both rulers went on to the feast.

At the feast Glodurin's unease grew even stronger, especially after hearing of Glim's territorial desires. How would he know about his take on Dorwinion, if even now his soldiers are still on the march? "Spies", he thought.

"Och lad, if only me cou'do tha. 'Tis true dat me soldiers are marchin' ta conquer Dorwinion', but there be nae thing me kinna do bout it right now as tis too late and me soldiers are too far to hear me order to stop. Probably they be now feastin' on dat brave Dorwinion ale. I be willin' ta share a few booty with ya, Lord Glim, ta show me dedication towards ye and yer generosity."

But that reply seemed to be met with a look as black as thunder, Glodurin thought. "Am I one ally short, or an enemy extra?", he added to the mix of thoughts already invading his mind. Then he remembered a previous thought: "Spies. Some heads be rollin' when I return home".

I am but a simple puppet

OOC:
I will not be active on this or any of my accounts starting tomorrow afternoon (my local time...) until next Thursday night. So I will miss the beginning of the next update.

Haradrim and ithilien rangers

IC:
For Eowyn, the day had been both good and bad. Good, because they had rather unexpected received some beautiful jewelry as a gift from the Fangorn Dwarves, and bad, because she was concerned that her seemingly somewhat deluded husband was going to make a treaty with orcs. She could just not fathom why. What in the world had gotten into Faramir's head?

A sudden thought struck her. Ever since they had formed an alliance with the Haradrim, both Ithilien and Harondor had begun to share some of their regional culture and food. One of the imports from Harondor was a beverage called chocolātl. It was know to affect the mind in strange ways. The Haradrim said that they drank it before going to war, to give themselves strength and stamina.
Has Faramir been drinking this...intoxicating beverage without my knowing? wondered Eowyn...

Faramir read over the message from Gumdum again. He noted the writing style. It was eloquent enough, but still to the point. He was very tempted to sign. He considered what making this pact would do for his people. Up to this point he had had no intention of challenging Doom'dr'thak in battle anyways. So why not sign it? He knew that Eowyn would think he was crazy, but wasn't preserving peace better than preserving one's appearance of sanity? He dipped his pen and signed.

Faramir also thought that a short thank you to Bildur of the Fangorn Dwarves was in order. So he wrote:

Esteemed ruler of the Fangorn Dwarves,
Thank you for your kind gift. We have heard, and now seen first-hand proof, of your people's genius is craftmanship and culture. My people also have a great love for these things. Thanking you again, I would like to express my hope that our two peoples may find a common bond because of this similarity.
Signed,
Faramir son of Denethor II, Prince of Ithilien

FROM THE OLD UPDATE... :

Dark Wood Orcs:

East Rho-Drukars: - POST 1 of 2
Glodurin received word from this Dwarf of Withered Heath, now right at the doorstep of his empire.

----
Send all forces to attack Gap of Isen

"

----
Send all forces to attack Eastern Arthedain
Send a peace-bearing envoy towards the Noldorin Kingdom of Eregion

Maedhros:
Maedhros look over at the Emissary from Golifindel, he laughed; he could see the tops of their heads! "Your so short..... hahahahah! But the matters at hand are no laughing matter, we are at war and Alliances are key to victory. We shall crush the enemy between hammer and anvil! Together!"

---
Alliance from the Noldorin Kingdom of Eregion accepted.

Angmar:
The Witch King of Angmar hissed at his lieutennant. "Go back to Angmar. Get and train the newly bred orcsssss.... the humansss are causing more trouble than I thought. Then sendsss a gift to that human King. Our servantsss shall be rewarded."

----
My remaining army, 2580 Orcs, led by my hero, to attack Emyn Uial.

The Dominion of Glim Firebeard

Nae matter, ah do hope that the roast boar will suffice to sate yer hunger, m'friend.'.

.....

----

Alliance proposed to the East Rho-Drukars, on the condition that they turn their army around and let Glim's forces take Dorwinion.
If the Alliance is accepted, attack Dorwinion with 880 Dwarves led by Glim.
If the Alliance is rejected, attack Western Rhovanion with 880 Dwarves led by Glim.

NPC talk and decisions for next update:

Dark Wood Orcs:
Conquering Southern Mirkwood proved to be too easy for Grumtash and his forces. In Rhosgobel now lie only fires, and no more birds and no more trees. Marching forward, Grumtash found the tower of Dol Guldur. He heard stories of what happened here in the past, and this brought a new sense of power to him; he who controls Dol Guldur controls what lies in Dol Guldur. He could feel the strength emanating from that place ...

While resting and pondering on his new exploits he received, curiously enough, a courier. Bringing gifts! Oh, how tasty ... Any gifts mean that the owner would be rich, and richness greatly attracts him. He grabbed the gifts and killed the courier, but not before divulging the origin of the gift - the city of Bildur, in Fangorn.

"That's where we will go."

----
Attack Anduin Vales with all forces.

Doom'dr'thak:
The attack in Upper Nurn ran according to his plan, even if part of his soldiers were unfit for battle; not unexperienced, but unfit to command.

Take for example the last battle, where Bru'tak Gumdum charged with the main army while the eastern and western flanks were envisioned to encircle and crush any resistance. While the eastern flank of his attacking force suffered the blunt of the barbarian charge, it stood brave and held its ground; the western flank, however, having nothing else to do than to encircle and crush the enemy had done little to accomplish this goal; it was Bru'tak's keen eye, while in battle, to notice in time the inefficiency of his western guard general, and to send word with new commands, overriding his general's ineptitude. The battle was eventually won, although it could have been so easily lost ...

While after the battle, Bru'tak Gumdum received word in his encampment in Upper Nurn about the acceptance of the Non Aggression Pact by the Prince of Ithilien; this deeply satisfied Bru'tak Gumdum. "No time now to lose the momentum", he thought.

"Rise, my soldiers, and let's ride for Nurn!", he added.

----
Attack Nurn with all forces.

East Rho-Drukars:
After arriving at his capitol, in Eastern Rhovanion, Glodurin sent word to his general in Dorwinion to send, as promised, a few booty from his newly conquered province to Glim.

He expected some word from Glim the Dwarf ... after the recent discussion things were a bit cold between the two. The alarming possibility of spies at his court made him even more uneasy. "A spy today, an assassin tomorrow", he thought.

"Tis kin swi' eithar way", he added. "Brin' all me soldiers in Dorwinion ta our capital and leave me a garrison ta guard meh barrels of wine" ... "This noch, prepare ta ride for Horse Plains!"

----
Attack Horse Plains with all forces.

Fangorn Dwarves:
Bildur received just a few replies from all the emmissaries he sent with gifts. But the preparations to transform the Gap of Isen into a marvel of technology is on the way, and significant progress has already been achieved. Miracles can happen when you reward your builders with enough gold to satisfy 3 generations. But more trees were needed. And the Wold and Foothills province just at the verge of Fangorn can provide the influx of trees needed to continue the construction.

----
Attack Wold and Foothills with all forces.

Free people of Lamedon:
After clearing the remainder of Belfalas from orcs, the realm was somewhat secure. But receiving no reply from the orcs of the Old Religion was an ill amen, Angordor considered. The vulcanic nature of those orcs, he thought, can make the borders too unstable and the men too edgy when it comes to protecting the realm.

There's a need for expansion, still. To the west lie the shores of Anfalas, and to the east lieth the realm of Lebennin. Securing Anfalas can bring Lamedon's Kingdom right at the doorsteps of those fanatics, but it also means a swift strike on their capitol, if the tension escalates. Securing the east could bring Lamedon in direct contact with the Alliance of Haradrim and Ithilien Rangers. The two nations have had no direct contact before, and that has to change.

"Humans understand humans", Angordor the Brave thought. "But these humans ... are an interesting sort of humans. Huge war-like creatures, overly-bred prodigies and what I like to call modified skins are all part of Faramir's armies. What kind of ruler needs to make a pact with .. the devil, just to secure a pool of loyal .. creatures? Are they even loyal?", Angordor asked himself.

"I would very much not like to see this theory put to the test. And if anything, if anyone is able to bring this mix together, then that someone is worthy to be an ally of mine. So let us test the waters and send a peace-bearing emmissary to Faramir, in Ithilien. Or wherever he is now .. and see what he has to say to the emmissary's words."

Attack Anfalas with all forces.
Send a peace-bearing emmissary to the Alliance of Haradrim and Ithilien Rangers.

Remnants of Old Religion:
The orcs of the Old Religion conquered Old Pukel Land, mostly a swampland of mysterious creatures. The forces of Gruumsh the Infernal continue to grow stronger as the Pukel men saw the light of the Old Religion, and embraced the fires willingly; there is great wisdom to be learned when one is willing to open his eyes. There is purpose. And as each day passes, more and more understand this.

Two envoys, from two different realms, came to the Halls of Ulond. One, bearing gifts. The other, bearing a message of warning. To both, Gruumsh replied. And sealed the replies with what appeared to be a magical ink, so only the hands of Bildur and Angordor could open and only their eyes can read.

And the army marches forward. To .. Anfalas?

Attack Anfalas with all forces?

Rhudaur Folk:
The soldiers of Rhudaur successfully conquered Eastern Arthedain, but by doing so they might have awoken some sleeping forces. They expected to find a few like-minded men settlements while marching west, people that could join forces with them ... but what they found were old, abandoned and forgotten villages; what was a once proud and ancient settlement of men - the village of Bree, was now just a pale and dusty version of what happens after centuries of war; there was no living soul on these grounds of what appeared to be the final graveyard of a long, rich but forgotten history. Things would have remained still as grim if not, upon arriving at Weathertop, they were met with blazing arrows and warcries : what remained of the watch tower in Weathertop had awoken and left no room for talk - and such, the war to claim Eastern Arthedain began.

After a few nights and after some serious casualties (mostly because of the surprise attack by the barbarians), King Arundar's forces managed to conquer Weathertop and all of its surroundings; now all Eastern Arthedain was theirs.

Not wanting to attack even further in the West - or at least, not yet - King's Arundar attention now turned to Ettenmoors, a province he thought to be a lonely region, mostly void of life; an easy picking for his injured soldiers. Even if arriving in Ettenmoors in the given time would mean crossing a great distance, at least part of their way would intersect with Rhudaur and the men could visit their families.

Attack Ettenmoors with all forces.

Thank you for the heads up! I noticed your previous post since you first wrote it, but didn't get to reply.

I actually will also be away starting on the 25th~26th~27th of July (not sure which yet) - until the 3rd of August, so we will have to delay for everyone at least an update (the one on the 2nd of August) if not two (if I won't get to update on the 26th).

Haradrim and ithilien rangers

IC:
Faramir sat in his make-shift study pensively. News of army movements were being brought to him by all his scouts. It appeared that he wasn’t the only one to fancy a larger backyard.

He considered what he had done so far and what possibilities for the future were. He needed more peanut fields, obviously. His mumak forces had sired an entire new generation, and the kids weren’t any less hungry than the parents were. He also needed more cocoa fields. Faramir wondered absentmindedly if Éowyn had discovered his chocolate addiction yet…

Thinking of his wife, and thinking of fields, an idea sparked into that souped-up Númenórean brain of his. It was actually quite obvious. He wondered why he hadn’t thought of it before. Maybe it was the cocoa affecting his brain? But anyways, on with the plan!
He pulled out a fresh sheet of parchment and dipped his pen with flair.

These mumakil were going to get more peanuts!

An emissary was sent to Glim Firebeard, with a message scrawled in Faramir’s own, distinctive hand;

Esteemed Sir, Lord Firebeard of the Withered Heath,

I hope you will excuse my lack of eloquence in this missive, but this is a matter in which I believe it is better to communicate straightforwardly than to worry about elegant wording. So I will get to the point. And my point is; I believe the time has come for us to ally our forces.

The reason for this is because our people share common bonds, albeit belonging to different races. We both have loyal, strong, fighting people. We both are favorites of the Gods. I have noted also that you show interest in the great work of expansion; the growth of territories in the goal of prospering and promoting people and culture. The people of Ithilien also share this desire to grow.

Hearing from the international news that Lord Glodurin of the East Rho-Drukars has refused your alliance, I thought that you might want to form an alliance with another, more prominent force on the field, namely the Haradrim and Ithilien Rangers. We could combine our greatness. We would be unstoppable. Of course you are wondering what I want for my people out of this alliance. Actually, I have only one goal, and it is more of a personal wish. I, having notable ties to the people of the Mark, being married to a Rohirric princess, wish to join my territory with theirs. But enough about me. You must have goals for your people. And I would be only too happy to help you accomplish them as your ally.

Of course, if I have mis-judged your wishes, which I admit is well possible, please accept my humble apology. Feel free to negotiate with me more on this matter before making a final decision. Of course, I would appreciate it if your Lordship would reply soon, as my army waits for your decision before acting.

No matter what your choice, I beseech you to accept my accompanying gift of ten pounds of the finest chocolate; a Haradrim delicacy.

Signed,
Faramir of Ithilien

Eregion and hollin

IC:

The emissary bowed, saying, "My lord Glorfindel will be pleased. I am sure there shall be further correspondence between us. Farewell." he said, heading back to Hollin to tell Glorfindel the good news. Back in Hollin, Glorfindel had received the peace-bearing envoy from Rhudaur and had given them much wine and meat, remaining friendly but noncommittal. In their inebriated state, they would be able to remember little. Sending them back to their lord loaded with elven gifts, he received the good news that Maedhros had accepted, and now looked to secure his borders and increase Eregion's lands.

Looking out from his camp, he summoned his battle commander, Saerondr and ordered him to collect a force and attack Northern Cardolan. The Barrow-Downs were much feared by men and hobbits, but elves had walked under much more dangerous leaves. However, Saerondr was ordered to go too deep into the forest without a significant force. He was asked recommended to seek out the one called Tom Bombadil.

Receiving the gifts from the Fangorn Dwarves, he admired the necklace and sent his emissary forth once more.

The emissary, coming to their realm, gave a short bow and began. "My lord Glorfindel of Eregion greets you, Fangorn Dwarves. In response to your gift, he has bidden me to deliver to you an elven sword made by our master smiths. Long ago, elves and dwarves worked in union to create many a treasure."

Summary:

Send 845 Elves with Saerondr Tarembor(Hero) to attack Northern Cardolan

Send back peace-bearing envoy drunk, with no promises, but loaded with gifts.

Extend greetings to Fangorn Dwarves and offer a gift of a sword to leader.

IMPORTANT MESSAGE / OOC:

As I am not at home for a day, feel free to post IC until tomorrow at 18 GMT. I will try my best to update tomorrow night in GMT time.

As two members currently participating in the roleplay have an extended leave in the next two weeks and as I'll be gone myself for a week at the start of August, the next update after this one tomorrow will happen on the 9th or the 10th of August.

I apologize for the extreme delay until Update 4 of the Roleplay, but I would like to accomodate everyone. You are free to post however many times you'd like until then and I will try my best to remain available to answer any inquiries regarding the roleplay.

Thank you for your understanding!

Glim firebeard

IC:

The meeting with the Glodurin hadn't gone the way Glim would've liked. The stubborn Dwarf had refused to grant Glim the territory he desired. This idea that there was no time to turn the troops around was, of course, nonsense. Glim knew it, Glodurin knew it, and they both knew that the other Dwarf knew it. Yet formality dictated that they play this little game. It was in the middle of these thoughts that the message from Lord Faramir arrived.

'Wots this then? Ye came from Ithilien lad? Good on ye! 'ere, hand me that there note ye've got.'

As he read the message, an increasingly wide smile spread across Glim's face. He had actually intended to reach out to these Humans himself, but they had beaten him to the punch.

'Listen 'ere laddie, can ye wait fer a moment while ah get a reply sorted? Ye must be hungry, too. Donnae ye worry, we'll sort ye out.' Glim told the messenger, then turned to one of his aides. 'BAELOG! See that the lad gets the finest port we can provide, and get him a mug 'o ale while yer at it. Oh, ah... The 'special' brew fer dignitaries an' friends.'

The 'special' brew was actually watered-down Dwarven ale, because the other races of Middle Earth were notorious for their poor ability to drink proper ale. Of course the messenger didn't know this, and there was no need to tell him either.

Glim immediately got to work on a reply to Faramir:

"To the Lord Faramir of Ithilien

I received your messenger, and he could not have arrived at a better time. You are quite correct that negotiations with the East Rho-drukars didn't go as planned, much to my regret. I have not given up hope on talking some sense into Glodurin, but he's a stubborn one.

It would please me greatly if our two peoples were to unite in friendship. Such friendships have been of great value to my people in the past. I understand your ambitions towards Rohan, and find it unnecessary to explain my own ambitions for the Iron Hills - I'm quite sure you've already figured out as much yourself.

I have scouts searching through Mirkwood for signs of Orcish activity. We hear of increasing aggression from bands of refugees from the human villages there, refugees that I'm sure are heading towards your lands at the moment. These Orcs could be a concern for both of us.

I have sent a small measure of my appreciation for your so-called chocolate back with your messenger. I hope you shall find it to your taste, and that it can be a sign of our continued friendship.

Yours, Glim Firebeard."

'That's that. Baelog, get tha scriba ta make this, yakno, readable for this Faramir manling. And send some guards and a casket of ale back with tha messenger lad. We've made new friends. Ah'll also have ye send a note ta Glodurin, with what we talked aboot.'

The message was another offer of alliance to Glodurin, on the condition that he cede Dorwinion to Glim - in exchange for Western Rhovanion, of course. Glim wasn't trying to cheat Glodurin out of his lands, after all, he simply wanted to consolidate. Although, with the alliance established with the people of Ithilien, slightly more pressure could now be applied to the upstart Dwarf lord.

"Tae Lord Glodurin.

Dissappointed at yer refusal, as ye well know. Ah have just heard from this manling in Ithilien, and offered him mah friendship. Ye finds yerself in a tight spot, with only wasteland ta yer south. So ah have a new proposal for ye. A territorial swap, where ah give ye Western Rhovanion, and ye give me Dorwinion. This would let ye have more lands ta take, as well as the eternal friendship of tha Firebeard clan.

Signed,

Glim Firebeard"

Aside from these messages, Glim was still waiting on word from the scouts sent to Mirkwood. He was beginning to worry that something had gone terribly wrong in there...

-----
OOC:
Move the army back to Middle Rhovanion.
Accept alliance with Haradrim and ithilien rangers.
Offer alliance to East Rho-drukars, on the condition of a territory swap (Dorwinion for Western Rhovanion), if such a thing is allowed (Couldn't find it in the FAQ, not sure we've dealt with this sort of thing in the past?)

P.S. I've answered issues today, and so I hope they'll update by the time you start compiling information, Dispatch. I'm really sorry to have cut it this late.

OOC:

You are free to post for 10 more hours as I've arrived back home too late and I'm going to sleep. After 10 hours starting now I will start the update. Do not worry Glim firebeard, it'll be enough time to update the issues, considering today's delay.

About the concession of lands, you are correct that we haven't had that before, but I don't see why it can't happen if both parties agree to it. There are many other things that haven't been explained in the FAQ, but I am compiling a list and adding them to it as we go. This issue may very well be worthy of an addition to the FAQ.

Also, if you find anything you are unconfortable with or need further explaining or feel that its too vague or ambiguous explained in the FAQ (I wrote it with a 'wooden' language) please let me know!

OOC:

Thank you everyone for your patience. I've been busy IRL and, as we've already established that the next update will be in roughly 2 weeks, I said that the current update info can wait.

Everything was mostly done since 5 days ago, the roleplay text and the map (if you're curious enough you can check the map by appending "3" instead of "2" at map url), but I put it on hold. I'll post the update tomorrow!

Until then I've tweaked a bit the BATTLE Calculator (now the calculator has the ability to differentiate between differentiate types of barbarian races) and what remains still not implemented (and I don't think I will) is the Crusade Army information, because that'll be too convoluted and make a mess out of the calculator. Having a Crusade Army means that you're taking the pen and paper and adding up everything yourself! Or ask me, and I'll do it for you. Or I'll integrate it in the battle calculator, somewhere.

I also edited the FAQ here and there, with the things you players have brought up. The most important additions are the serious changes in the NS stat bonuses, but that's implemented in the next Roleplay if you guys want to play another.

FOR THIS ROLEPLAY what has been changed is:
- Differences in God Favouritism point gains. You lose more if you do nothing and you lose more if you do not answer at least 3 issues per week now (from 2 before).
- Additions to Crusade option, in case anyone plans on having a crusade later on in the roleplay.
- You can offer or receive as tribute part of soldier forces, and you can swap territories - if you want. No-ones obliging you to do it, but I feel that in case anyone wants ... its explained in the FAQ.

Stay tuned for the update 3 tomorrow!

Dear Members,

First of all, apologies for this huge delay; I will try not to let this happen again. I'm off tomorrow on my one-week absence and next update will happen probably on Monday, a day after I return. I'll post more information then. I feel that things start to heat up in the roleplay!

So, without further ado,

UPDATE 3 of the Middle Earth Roleplay has been posted !

It is accessible via the following link:

** REMEMBER! ON EACH THREE UPDATES YOU GET AN INFLUX OF UNITS **

More info:

FROM THE OLD UPDATE... :

Dark Wood Orcs:

-----
Move the army back to Middle Rhovanion.
Accept alliance with Haradrim and Ithilien Rangers.
Offer alliance to East Rho-drukars, on the condition of a territory swap (Dorwinion for Western Rhovanion)

NPC talk and decisions for next update:

Dark Wood Orcs:
Once in Anduin Vales, Grumtash marveled at the sight of little people and their chaotic running in circles! And slippery bodies. Those darn spears mostly missed when thrown at their targets! And their burrowing skills was fantastic. Grumtash was a bit envious ... so he left none but three such small creatures. His new playthings!

On another note, Grumtash had an epiphany: if people are sending him gifts, then he must be of utmost importance around these parts. Which is extremely correct, no doubt. But what if there were other, lesser, important players nearby? The thought never crossed his mind, until now ... but now .. he feels as if he is watched. As if his moves have been studied. Maybe its the adrenaline, after all. A bloodbath does that, sometimes ...

" Take a few soldiers to roam the realm, and see who's important around. Maybe you won't find any, but its worth knowing. This message ((the dwarf's gift)) might have been sent to others, too. But those replies might have been different ... than mine."

----
Send a few detachments of soldiers towards Angmar, Rhudaur Folk, AHIR and Glim Firebeard's Dominion.
They can be interacted with (greeted, friended, bribed, attacked, ambushed, captured, killed etc.)
Attack Wold & Foothills with all soldiers

Doom'dr'thak:
Conquering Nurn and Upper Nurn left the path open towards Gorgoroth, the next logical choice of action.

"Although ... there is a gist," Bru'tak Gumdum said.
"Our ability to recruit new forces is directly tied to how many provinces we command; we simply can't take and train orcs from where there are none!

And conquering such a mighty province requires lots of soldiers. Soldiers we do not have right now, after that disastrous attack on Upper Nurn!

There are two possible paths, now: either we wait until we can recruit another round of soldiers, and then attack ... or attack provinces nearby, to get more territories ... to get more soldiers.

Which is more efficient, I wonder?

Squire! I am calling the Small Council. There's matters to attend to."

----
No army movement.

East Rho-Drukars:
Glodurin received word from Glim, but that's not all what Glodurin received; news of orcs sighted at the southern borders! Ohhh, and if there's anyone that he distrusts more than humans, elves or other dwarves ... they are the orcs!

Naturally, Glodurin felt his realm threathened, making him view the message from Glim with other eyes.

He wrote as reply:
"Kin'Glim, me have answer to ya proposal. I be willing to trade realms, but see ... it puts me in a bad, bad place.

Dunno know about ya, but me have heard stories of wha' happens in Mirkwood .. why would me be willin' to border Mirkwood? For ta friendship? Ha!

I be willin to bear the blunt of ta enemy and switch keys to province, if ya be me ally and if ya also tribute ... say ... 500 of your finest dwarves, in my guard. Ta guard Middle Rhovanion, for sure.

What say ya? "

----
All forces to Eastern Rhovanion
Send dispatch back to Glim, with the proposal to switch territories if alliance is agreed and if Glim tributes 500 Dwarves to East Rho-Drukars

Fangorn Dwarves:
Bildur's realm is now a gem of technology and wealth; from the smiths of Fangorn, to the mighty fort in Isen and to the rich forests in the Foothills the realm is filled with burgeois workers, willing to work for the promised richness.

The assets need also guarding, so a permanent guard has been dispatched towards the Wold & Foothills, towards Fangorn and towards the Gap; the remainder of the army is set to attack the mountains of Moria, or more specifically, the Redhorn Gate. There they hope to find enough mithril to make the whole world shine ...

----
Leave 160 Dwarves in Wold & Foothills to coordinate the extraction of trees
Leave 160 Dwarves in Fangorn to guard the smithing grounds of Bildur
Send 160 Dwarves in the Gap of Isen, to coordinate the construction of the fort
Attack with 480 Dwarves the Redhorn Gate

Free people of Lamedon:
Things are different now, in Lamedon. Having ownership of most, if not all, realms beneath the white mountains gives you a different perspective on life. Lebennin, for example, is a last bastion of barbarians around these realms, as after Lebennin lie the realms of the Alliance, to which Angordor received positive replies;

Things do feel different ...

----
Attack Lebennin with all forces.

Remnants of Old Religion:
The mindset of Gruumsh the Infernal is that Minhiriath needs to be conquered, as the religion has to spread to elvish speaking realms as well. Playing with fire is tricky, especially since this course of action can awake sleeping giants. But there is no cause more just than expanding the wisdom of old to those worthy to embrace it!

Sending a message to the Noldorin Kingdom of Eregion and to the realms of Maedhros:
"Leaders of elves,

Great hope ahead! My forces ride towards Minhiriath, and once conquered, I will transform it into a marvelous stepping ground, assisting the progress towards conversion for all the elves that lie after Minhiriath. You are at the borders, so you have to wait the least amount of time to understand the joys and satisfacton of having a real purpose to aim for."

----
Attack Minhiriath with all forces
Send emissaries to the Noldorin Kingdom of Eregion and to Maedhros

Rhudaur Folk:
Rhudaur under King Arudar has been quite successfull; from just being the King of Rhudaur, his expansion now holds as owned grounds the provinces of Eastern Arthedain and Ettenmoors.

Upper Rhudaur, even in name, bears great pride towards many men in Rhudaur - if able to be conquered.

But conquering is not all Arundar has to do, in order for his Folk to survive in today's world. Allegiances have to be also renewed.

----
Attack Upper Rhudaur with 1430 humans
Send as tribute to Angmar 400 humans (transformed as 320 Orcs via point #4 in the FAQ)

Lindon Rebels:
There is little known about the Lindon Rebels, as of now; because of what appeared to be a civil war, part of the provinces under Lindon's earlier rule broke off and other provinces aligned with the new ruler - all in all, a new force is born.

The ruler of Lindon Rebels is Rog the Wrathhammer, a craftsman with a curious name and with a great hatred towards Orcs. So much hatred that, in fact, the only known actions of the Lindon Rebels were to declare as enemies-on-sight all hailing from the provinces of Angmar and Rhudaur Folk.

Nothing else is known, so far. But one does wonder about the back story of Rog!

----
Move 530 elves to River Lhun and 530 elves to Numeriador
Declared Angmar and Rhudaur Folk as enemies-on-sight (a war is at any time possible)

OOC:

The player behind Eglamar has returned to NS and would like to return to the roleplay as well! We are now discussing about which territories he would like to claim back around the RP nation of Lindon.

Please keep on hold any replies towards the latest actions of Lindon Rebels.

OOC

As the game site is currently down in most areas, next update will be delayed for several days / a week until I can find a different host.

Eglamar has joined the roleplay! Lindon Rebels will disappear and will be replaced by old Lindon. Some provinces will switch hands, although I do not know which atm. Eglamar's RP nation will be invited to the region in a day or two (when I return home).

The back story I will use is that the civil war in old Lindon has subsided and the Lindon Rebels under Rog lost the fight against the loyalist of Lindon's ruler.

Thank you all for the understanding!
