Tatarica wrote:Welcome to all the new arrivals from the raider sphere. Hope that things remain civil and I certainly do hope that we can entertain you with theme-related topics; maybe some of you are into Tolkien / Middle Earth?

I'm partly asking as we're conducting a Middle Earth RP over at Middle Earth Roleplay and are open to invite new people that are interested in the theme to also participate in the RP. And partly because Middle Earth is always open to new folk that are into the saga, no matter their r&d affiliation.

Definitely like Tolkien - the puppet’s name came from somewhere, after all :P

Thanks for the welcome! If anyone’s being uncivil, let me know and I’ll take care of it, though I doubt it will come to that. We’re perfectly civil folk, usually.

Hmm, I am more terrible at these things than others of the region, but if I am to guess I'd say that Red Maw is a name of something spawned by Morgoth; a balrog? A dragon? Maybe others know the answer

Carcharoth was taken, unfortunately. But yes, Morgoth’s guardian of Angband’s gates. :P

Ah, yes, obviously; Carcharoth! A terrible, powerful beast. And so evil, running away with a silmaril like that!

Wouldn't surprise me if Carcharoth was used in a previous raid on Middle Earth :P

Now I see the resemblance of the werewolf name with the LWU. Nice idea for a name.

After speaking with Dispatch, I’ll leave the embassy with the RP region open and have appointed them as officer so you can keep your RP running. Hopefully the raid doesn’t bother too much this way - outside of the WFE and flag, of course :P

The below are MY OWN PERSONAL THOUGHTS on the matter, and not necessarily shared by the rest of Middle Earth.

Dear everyone,

The R&D aspect of the game is something our region is not into, but we experience it once a year or two years. We thank our vigilent friends that make it so that we only stumble into problems once a year and not more often, we thank our friends that came and assisted us when we got into problems, we thank our raiders for conducting an interesting in-lore raid without too much disruption, and, finally, we thank our residents for not antagonising things, as I know how much the region means for the natives and how vocal people get in those moments.

Middle Earth is mostly full of ents, so I m surprised if not the majority of our residents had any idea of the latest turmoil, which can be consideres as lucky in these given circumstaces. Thank you to the natives that were active during the raid but did not engaged the raiders in bitter RMB talk which is never productive, considering that everyone does in this game (NS) what they consider to be interesting.

So, thank you to Kitezh and to those that assisted Middle Earth in regaining control. Your help is utmost appreciated!

Thank you's are extended also to Red Maw and those that participated in the raid of Middle Earth but did so with in-lore names and generally not so much disruption.

My personal opinion to the lot of you is that the doors of Middle Earth is open for anyone that has interest in the lore, and that you can stay / remain here with your nation, a nation puppet, or come here in secret, just as long as you leave your R&D ambitions to your other nations, something similar to what I have done in the distant past. Many of you know this but many also do not, as I have played both as a defender and as an invader (back in a time when people were calling it invading rather than raiding), both for big organizations now defunct / not operational, and then I decided to remain around because this was a part of NS that also interested me.
Obviously I do not talk for the region, but I am sure that these things can be discussed and opinions on these matters given.

TLDR: Long story short, I, personally and my view does not directly represent the view of the rest of Middle Earth, thank you to everyone that participated in the R&D event, for any part of the barricade. Have a great day everyone.

Everything seems to of turned out reasonably fine, and I am glad for the peace that remained on the RMB and that has been restored to the region.
Thank you to all the defenders; thank you for always looking out for us.

Noldoria

Please forgive my poorly-informed-ness.

As I recall there was supposed to be a means that was made available a year or two ago that basically allowed Regions such as ours to simply opt-out of being raided. What was it again? Something like having an officer with Boarder Control that could not be removed by raiders? Sort of like a Founder for a Founderless region?

Is this available to us? If so, lets do it - now.

I seem to remember some inconclusive discussions around this a while back - some objections like what about if the person quits NS, and then it is quit involved to change who gets this power (requiring an act of the WA?).

I say let us delay and hee and haw no longer. Let us take decisive action to protect our fair region from these orcish raiders.

Noldoria is not the oldest nation in this region by far - so we don't deserve this responsibility. However, if no one else will step up an take it - if we are the only ones willing - then we will happily do this service for Arda. Let her never again be marred by raiders. We can guarantee that Noldoria will forever stand will you as an active member in our region.

We say to the free peoples - give someone amongst us this responsibility - whoever you think best qualified - so that they may crush the next raiding attempt - not unlike as Helm Hammerhand would !

Does anyone have a good quote of the day that we add to our WFE? And maybe change it to quote of the week / or latest quote

Tatarica wrote:Does anyone have a good quote of the day that we add to our WFE? And maybe change it to quote of the week / or latest quote

Some highbrow poetry perhaps:

"Ho! Ho! Ho! to the bottle I go
To heal my heart and drown my woe.
Rain may fall and wind may blow,
And many miles be still to go,
But under a tall tree I will lie,
And let the clouds go sailing by."

I haven't logged on in a while and I saw I was endorsed several times about 9 or 10 days ago. I take it there was an attempted raid? At least I didn't get kicked out this time but did anyone else?

Dwarven mines and Great dwarfheim

Welcome back, Ryfin!

Yes, there was an occupation for a couple of days by the LWU raider organization.

Most of the R&D was involved in another region in around the same time, so things were a bit odd but not very.

Welcome, Dwarfheim. Glad to have you.

Tatarica, Dwarven mines, and Great dwarfheim

Hello and welcome to the region!

There are a lot more interesting things you can do on NS now, Great dwarfheim; more issues to answer and there's fun in playing the card game also (where you get NS cards that you can collect or sell based on a random chance after answering issues). Obviously, if you want to get more involved we (Middle Earth) also do a small roleplay that you're more than welcomed to be involved in (we have some other dwarves playing and even other dwarf'named players playing non-dwarf races!)

Obviously, any questions you have, both in-theme or in-game related feel free to ask. Here I asked earlier if anyone knows of a good quote to add to our WFE, and this reminds me to change it to one of the two proposals. Anyone else has more?

July Elections

Scheduled elections took place in July for the positions of Senator for Himes West (roleplay) and Senator for Lyonnesse East (houses).

Wille-Harlia of TCP defeated Krystalveil of WIP with 40 votes to 20 to become Senator of Himes West.

Free Las Pinas (MSPP), Thedairos (TCP), and Haivon (WIP) all entered the first race for Lyonnesse East with the conclusion resulting in a runoff between Thedairos and Free Las Pinas as no candidate reached a 50% majority of votes. The ensuing run-off resulted in a tie that then triggered a vote by the Council of Nine to select the new senator, all of this culminating to the election of Thedairos as Senator of Lyonnesse East.

XKI thanks Marxist germany and The United Royal Islands of Euramathania for their previous service. Congratulations to the winners and commiserations to the other candidates.

New Government Appointments

~ July saw the transition of the Culture Office over to now Cultural Officer Grea Kriopia after HumanSanity's resignation following the end of the XKI Summer Olympics.
~ HumanSanity didn't go far though, as he was appointed by Chief Executive Markanite to serve as the first President of the XKI Cards Co-op.
~ As the Co-op President, HumanSanity gained Free Las Pinas and HN67 as Cards Co-op administrators to help oversee the new venture.
~ Free Las Pinas was also brought on as Casino Shift Manager with last month's Casino revitalization and as Deputy Senator for Lyonesse East following the election of Thedairos
~ Senator Grea Kriopia brought on Wischland as Deputy for Blue Canaria North to aid in the creation of this report.
~ Delegate Kuriko hired Ignis cinere onto the TIBOE team as an official endorser to help boost and maintain endorsements.
~ The evergrowing FA team saw HumanSanity made emissary to Founderless.
~ Our Minister of Education The tasmanian islands sought a new Deputy after the election of Wille-Harlia and hired Pacifical.
~ Senator Wille-Harlia also hired Central Russia and Margaux as Deputies for Himes West.

Around the Islands

~ Wille-Harlia was named LinkRookie of the Quarter for his exceptional work as a TITO member, Recruiter, and Deputy Minister of Education, among other positions, as well as his outstanding contributions to the forum and A Taco Archipelago's RMB. Congratulations Wille-Harlia!
~ Islanders enjoyed a multitude of potato-based dishes alongside residents of Spiritus, at a LinkPotato Potluck celebration of Kuriko and The Salaxans' achievements as WA Secretary-General and Vice Secretary-General. All participants are several potato recipes richer, with a few even being lucky enough to receive Kuriko and The Salaxalans trading cards.
~ The XKI Card Co-op is making good progress under the guidance of Cards Co-op President HumanSanity, with plans for a transfer card-sharing system and a mentorship program. The hard work of Co-op members has already facilitated the card rewards for several of this month's events.
~ July's LinkFeatured Nation was Free Las Pinas, whose exceptionally high activity in XKI, alongside their work as an Ambassador, TITO member, and Recruiter makes them more than deserving of this honor. Keep up the good work!
~ Cultural Officer Grea Kriopia gave Islanders a chance to express what real-world sights reminded them of NationStates in a LinkPhotography Competition. Congratulations to Wischland for her 1st place Miniatur Wunderland photo, Wille-Harlia for his tasty 2nd place S'more photo, and Eastern New England for their charming Honorable Mention coastal photo.
~At the end of the month, Hakketomat announced XKI's first-ever LinkTacoVision! Inspired by Eurovision, over a dozen eager nations have already submitted songs. Voting begins early August, so be on the look-out for the competition's results in next month's report.

XKI Game-Side

A July regional poll by Jabberwocky forced Islanders to pick a superpower, but clearly all of the disastrous time travel movie plots did not deter many.

July held some contentious topics but here are some more lighthearted posts from this month...

Dress in layers
Don't cross the streams!
Making good progress
Someone translate please...
Jk...unless?
Conflict Resolution
Have you tried turning it off and then on again?
With great power comes great responsibility
Three cheers for Kuri

Meet A Nation Interview

This month's edition features an interview with one of the newest elected Senators in XKI, Wille-Harlia, on their time in XKI and future plans for roleplay in the region. Aside from their senate seat, WH also serves as an Emissary, Cultural Office Assistant, Deputy Cartographer, and TITO Member.

GK: Let's start with some of your time here. Being a more recent addition to the Islands, could you talk a bit about what attracted you to XKI?

WH: First, the recruitment telegram I received seemed the most sincere of all of them, and offered the most things. Once I got to XKI, the warm welcome I received was amazing, and no question was stupid. The same thing on the forum and the Discord. Then, when I got into some jobs where I could show my thanks, I knew I would stay for good.

GK: Since you mentioned you liked the variety of things XKI offered, have you developed any favorite activities/hobbies in your time here?

WH: There are some hobbies I have here in XKI. One is RPing in ATA with all the other regular ATAers. One hobby I used to have was refreshing to the Job Opportunities page every day for new jobs I’d be interested in. But I don’t really do that anymore now as I have enough jobs. I will also occasionally Debate in the politics section of the Discord, and I also play in the XKI Minecraft server.

GK: Speaking of hard work, you recently faced your first ever election in XKI, how do you feel now looking back at it?

WH: I was recently elected the Himes West Senator, in charge of RP. Looking back on that campaign, I think I did everything right, but I didn’t even use half of my paid advertisements. I think that once I took an early 15 vote lead, I had it won, but there was still good competition from Krystalveil, as we had very similar platforms.

GK: Could you outline some of your goals for the future of RP in XKI?

WH: I have two goals for XKI RP. The first is to improve the quality of RP in the XKI RP region of A Taco Archipelago. The second is to revive the forum and Discord RP.

GK: Big goals! Are there any future projects you can tease our readers about in regards to RP?

WH: On the Discord, I can tease an Insanity RP event, on the forum, a medieval and a WW3 event, and in ATA, a whole plethora of events that will make up an RP event with a common enemy for all.

GK: Very interesting, what are you most excited for in the future of RP?

WH: I am most excited to see the results of my attempts!

GK: For sure. Lastly, what do you think the biggest challenge will be in regards to your work in RP?

WH: This a challenge that will take thinking to overcome: How to get the game side RPers on the forum and Discord.

Until next month, your XKI Update Staff is signing off - Grea Kriopia and Wischland

Greetings my fellow NS members. As some of you may have heard, today 10000 Islands was targeted by a person impersonating a member of our Discord moderation team. This impersonator was able to gain access to our entire discord server by impersonating an offline moderator, to the detriment of our region.

This impersonator, once having access to our server, engaged in a destructive action that left our entire server destroyed. All information within our server since it was created in late 2016/early 2017 has been destroyed and is beyond retrieval. Over a dozen members of our server were also banned by them, and we are working on contacting them in order to re-invite them. We ask that the community please have patience while we work go fix what has been destroyed, and if you know anything please contact us.

Thank you,

First of all, welcome back Elvish dorab!

Secondly, thank you for the news!

Finally, that is some quite sad and unfortunate information (regarding your region's Discord server). I don't use Discord, but I would suspect that these things can be quite common and as such there are some safeguards in place, like backups? or links of contact for Discord admins to get things back in order? I hope that things get back to normal as soon as possible.

Middle Earth definitely stands with 10000 Islands and if there is anything we can do to help please let us know! Probably most we can do is entertain with titbits of info or in-theme songs so that people forget about the unpleasanties that have happened, but even so!
