I think mental health is a big part, but namely social isolation and alienation. a lot of these shooters feel isolated from their communities so they get wooed into the far-right. no longer are you just a Texas loser, you are part of a long lasting ethnocultural tradition which is fighting for survival. you suddenly have a sense of purpose, and you are willing to die for it, but you also feel so alienated that you lack empathy or any strong attachment to actually existing human beings.
