Maybe it isn't fear that causes you to shut down but instead it's your mind subconsciously telling you that this person clearly cannot debate and is not worth your time or your valuable oxygen. Any normal person can debate about these topics without resorting to aggression, but there are some who can't and that's because of ignorance.
