Edit: I was basing this on the fact that the world average went up. I've done some more looking about, and it seems that most, if not all, of the top nations for this took a hit to tourism in a similar fashion. I guess the international tourist community suddenly decided they just wanted more variety and spread out?

Also, top 1% in cuisine! I'll take it.

I find myself in a similar boat with around a 1000 point drop in Tourism, Low crime and high Food Quality. I'm not really sure if the new changes are perfect yet but we will have to wait and see.

Yes, but once the new cartographer(s) is/are named I will be checking to make sure you make it onto the map in a reasonable amount of time, and sending telegrams if your nation is still not on the map after a considerable amount of time.

The federated states of amogus wrote:Kinda weird that my psychotic dictatorship is patriotic lol

Have you heard of North Korea? Nazi Germany? USSR? Mao-era China? Late medieval Europe? These were all pretty much dictatorships (here I am equating near-absolute monarchs with dictators), many of whom were psychotic (French King Charles VI even thought that he was made out of glass and that someone touching him would cause him to shatter). So it’s really not that surprising that an authoritarian dictator either a) inspires mass patriotism, populism, and nationalism through their demogogery (Nazi Germany, Maoist China, early USSR, some medieval European kingdoms) or b) intimidates the people so much that they are forced to be patriotic (North Korea, mid-USSR, other medieval European kingdoms)

The first thing she noticed was the air.

Balmy. Humid.

Then, a putrid smell. Like rotting vegetation. Life coming into being, being spent fast, perishing soon. The cycle repeating more rapidly than elsewhere. At the pace of the tropics.

Dragging her heavy black suitcase by the handle, she hailed a taxicle. Damned Frieden-und Freudenlandians. Ever since they banned cars (which was a long time ago, as she recalled with a shudder), regular taxis had been replaced by single-person carriages drawn by a bicycle, which they - in their dim-witted linguistic quasi-inventiveness - chose to call 'taxicles'.

A flashy green taxicle with its gaudy drapery stopped before her and the driver greeted her with a slight tilt of his head.

"Lady?"
"..."
"You waved to hail a taxicle, right?"
"I have baggage," she said drily, her eyes darting at the suitcase and back at the driver again. Another dim-witted Frieden-und Freudenlandian, to be sure.
"Oh. You can put it here."

The driver pointed to a flimsy-looking mesh stretched under the passenger seat. It occurred to her at that moment that she should have remembered how much these people valued labor. So much so that they did an effing revolution for it. Seizing the tools of production, yada yada yada. Hence each taxicle driver is actually a taxicle owner, working for themselves, only for themselves, pocketing all proceeds, no boss they are responsible to, no one to get their salaries from. And they valued their own labor highly. So no taxicle driver will pick up your trunk for you, not even out of courtesy. Their job is to drive you around, and they'll do it as long as you pay the fare, but they won't ever carry your damned suitcase, because they are not a bunch of hotel bellboys who get paid precisely for that kind of demeaning servitude.

"Thanks," she said and hauled the suitcase onto the net, somewhat surprised that it didn't fall right through it. She climbed onto her seat.

"Whereto?"
"Pinnacle Street."
"Door number?"
"Drop me somewhere on the street, I'll walk the rest of my way."

The driver shrugged and started pedalling.

"So, you are not from here?"
Her heart skipped a beat.
"What makes you think so?" My accent, she thought.
"Look at yourself," the driver chuckled. "Wearing a sweater? It is 29 degrees!"
She let herself exhale slowly and forced a smile.
"It was pretty cold when I boarded the plane. I am aware of the local weather. All my summer clothes are in the suitcase."
"Where are you even from?"
"Dolphin City. Up north."
"I don't think the weather is too different there, is it?"
"We have some sort of a microclimate due to ocean currents or je ne sais quoi." She was growing impatient. Why did all taxi drivers have to be so obnoxiously chatty?
"I never knew. Frankly, I don't remember the last time I wore a sweater. Anyway, lady, you won't need one here, I assure you. It is always so pleasantly warm here in Sereneville."
"..."
"Sooo what brings you here?"
"Huh?"
"I mean, business or pleasure? The purpose of your trip."
Gosh, this fellow is asking more questions than the passport police, she mused with exasperation.
"Strictly business. There is no pleasure involved," she said tartly and averted her gaze.
"..."
Good, the chatterbox is silenced now. Was I rude? Perhaps. But then, I will probably never see him again. So what difference does it make if he is offen-
"What business? Just curious. Not many people come to Sereneville for business. Mainly holidaymakers, you know. And whale watchers."
"I am starting a new job," she said. She was giving up and just wished Pinnacle Street was close by.
"Congratulations, ma'am! That's great news! Your occupation?"
"Civil engineer."
At this, the driver started laughing. "A civil engineer? Hahaha. In Sereneville? What job could you have in Sereneville? Excuse me, my lady, I don't want to be impolite, but look around you. Do you see any development whatsoever? The legend has it that not a single new building was constructed here since that old man Brooks was the mayor. And I was an infant then."
"Well, that's about to change," she retorted. "There is a bridge being built - from Sereneville to Porpoise Island."
The driver's pupils dilated, though she couldn't have seen it.
"The Revolution Bridge? The Project of the Century?" he gasped. "No way!"
"I don't care what it is called. It is a suspension bridge, it will be 2750 meters long and 230 meters tall when completed, with railroad tracks, bike lanes and a promenade road for walking. The construction starts soon."
"People have been talking about this project for almost two decades," the driver said, incredulously. "It is, however, a gargantuan project, needs a lot of cash to build that humongous thing, am I right? And people wanted to build it, I guess, but the municipal government of Sereneville could never issue the multibillion budget. It was merely a distant dream. I can't believe it can be built, though. I mean, where is the money? We don't have that kind of money."
"The federal government has taken over the issue now."
"Oh. Well, we never knew. Don't we have a right to know, as residents?"
She shrugged.

"Anyway, we are there."
"Pinnacle Street?"
"Yes, lady. This here is Pinnacle Street. It's a rather long one. Are you sure you want to walk?"
"I am sure. Thank you."
She clambered down to pick up her suitcase.
"You know, you are new to this town, so if you need to call a taxicle again, I mean at least until you purchase a bicycle for yourself, I guess..." He awkwardly held out a business card.
"Thank you," she said and grabbed the card mindlessly.
Jimmy Okabe, Your Taxicle Chauffeur in Sereneville - Feel Safe Just Like Your Dad Is Driving
What a trite slogan, she mused. It was obvious that no professional copywriter had been involved in creating the business cards. Just as you would expect from these Frieden-und Freudenlandians.
"And your name?"
"Excuse me?"
"I'd like to give you a proper welcome, Miss ...?"
"Wasserstein," she said. "Hildegard Wasserstein."
"Hildegard!"
"Yes?"
"Now, that's funny. How old are you even?"
Is this dude even real? Asking a lady her age? So directly and with no shame? Have they no manners?
"Thirty-five," she said almost with a grunt. Well, actually thirty-nine, but the driver doesn't have to know that, does he?
"My maternal grandmother's name was Hildegard," the driver said. "She died last year, at the age of ninety-eight. I think I have never met anyone younger than her who was named Hildegard. So forgive my curiosity. It is a very old-fashioned name, I am surprised someone young such as yourself should be called that. Are you named after a family member, perhaps?"
"I don't know," she said, pressed a twenty Pinkponk bill to Jimmy's palm, pulled out the handle of her trolley and promptly walked away, the wheels rattling on the sidewalk.
Jimmy shrugged, pocketed the crisp banknote, jumped on his taxicle seat and started to whistle an old tune while he pedaled away.
Hildegard! she exclaimed in her head. Hildegard, my a$$. Idiot. "It's an authentic name," he had said. "Nobody will suspect anything. A very common German name, well-known among these Germanic Frieden-und Freudenlandians. You can't go wrong with Hildegard. As they say, it is goldrichtig."
When she arrived at her hotel, she would have to telewire an urgent message to Derek, just to wake the fool up from his undeserved slumber. "Your intelligence about Germanic names is indeed goldrichtig! But about ninety-eight years late!" Such an unintelligent fellow heading the intelligence department, she thought. No wonder we are in deep sh1t.

The trolley rattled on on the cobblestones, as she heard the first thunderclaps of an approaching tropical storm, the first one she would experience in her life.

(doesn't stop some big-brained rich people from buying* overseas though.)

We of course have public transportation, but again, the terrain's so difficult and taxes so resented that it's genuinely difficult to achieve the long-term goal of long-distance transportation that Jutsa always wanted. What's available is usually for business - and so riding by mule, genuinely, is the most efficient way of getting across the nation, and bicycles across cities.

That sounds an awful lot like where I live — the terrain is awful and the region so sparsely populated that the roads we do have are honestly terrible — but we do have the world's southernmost Land Rover dealership here.

Is the Economy stat essentially just a function of population? My economy has remained at a steady 100 for the majority of my nation's life, despite my only good industry being Tourism and all of the rest being pathetically horrible.

Also, I feel like the Tax stat works oddly on older nations. My people receive $120,000 on average, yet lose >96% of that to taxes. I know that's a result of me constantly racking up environmental policies, but still... I feel like it should eventually start redirecting taxes into certain categories and reducing others, instead of just always increasing the tax percentage.

Just wanted to post a quick reminder that the Cartographer applications close on the 19th of June, so if you haven't yet submitted your entry be sure to do so within the next five days. Even if you haven't quite completed the skills component, we'd definitely be interested to see your progress so far.

Cartographer Applications

As many of you are no doubt aware, the government of Forest has been considering how best to fill the position of Cartographer. Choosing the right person for the job is of paramount importance; our regional map is not only a creative feat, it is a representation of our shared values. In an effort to prevent future governments from struggling with this same predicament, we have been working hard to come up with a long-term solution that works for everyone - for the administration, for the Cartographer and (most importantly) for all the Forestians who are invested in our regional map.

We are therefore looking not for a single Cartographer, but instead to create a dedicated team of Cartographers made up of skilled and committed individuals who will collaborate with each other on all duties relating to our regional map. Individuals who are interested in being part of this team should complete the following application.
.

The Application

  • The submission period will last for one month, until the 19th of June. No applications will be accepted after that deadline. Only residents of Forest may apply.

  • The application itself has two components:

    1. A skills component involving the creation of a themed version of the Old World regional map using data that is publicly available. The themed map should allow the reader to visually compare nations based on a statistic you think shows something interesting about Forest. The map should be made in .svg format using a suitable vector graphics editing software (previous Cartographers have used Inkscape). CTE'd nations or those not residing in Forest can be left out of the map or left unranked according to the chosen statistic.

      • UPDATE: The official .svg file of the Old World map is available in the LinkForest discord server - that should link directly to the post - meaning applicants do not have to recreate the map from scratch. This file can be downloaded and edited as required for applicants to create their statistical map.

    2. A written component, no greater in length than 500 words, outlining why you would be suitable for the role. You should discuss any relevant experience, particularly that which demonstrates your capacity for long-term commitment and your ability to work as a team to complete a shared vision.

  • A high-res image of the map should be uploaded to imgur and, along with the written component, should be sent to me, Terrabod, via telegram.

  • After the deadline has closed, the government will consider all applications. Successful applicants will be contacted via telegram and will begin collaborating on Cartography business immediately.

.
If you have any questions you can send them to me via telegram or post them on the RMB.

Best of luck to all applicants!

My point of view is the news is mostly built around shock and fear entertainment. For every tragic incident covered there are several that aren't, and several hundred heart-warming humane events that most certainly would never be.

I'm glad to read you're doing better. Stay strong; depression's a difficult beast to fight, but you can always make a difference.

Re: Economy: You definitely can have an absolutely horrific economy with a massive population (just look at Mozworld or Ransium). I think the reason your economy stat's doing so well because your government is doing so much spending (which is impressive given your low employment and low... well, every other economic stat including black market). I'll take note, though, that black market and economic output are definitely linked with population.

Re: Taxes: They're always going to something! It's just a matter of figuring out what. Also, it's entirely possible to get a ridiculously high income, and yet have 100% of it taxed by the government. I tend to look at average disposable income as a better metric (and thank goodness they added that!)

Speaking of adding stats, who else is absolutely THRILLED about the new stats/changes? It's so exciting! :D

Looking at it, there are actually several options:

"Extend embassy posting privileges to:
- all residents of embassy regions (the option that we have in Forest)
- officers of embassy regions with communications authority
- officers of embassy regions
- delegates & founders of embassy regions
- no-one"

I guess that if we were to have a lot of spam or something from other regions, we could restrict people. It's a shame that there isn't a mechanic to select specific regions to restrict or allow. I guess at that rate, it would be better to just drop a troublesome embassy if it came to that.

You got to know someone from Australia while living in Europe yourself? You can meet with them every day if you want!
