Dear Friends,

I am pleased to announce the construction of new embassies with Force! Once things have finished, please feel free to head over and say hello!

Your Everlasting Foreign Minister,
Ruinenlust

This is the term that never ends,
yes it goes on and on my friends,
Verdant Haven was elected, not knowing what it was,
but they'll be Forest Keeper now forever just because,
this is the term that never ends,
yes it goes on and on my friends,
etc. etc.

The Rejected Realms

Do people not like politics in NS because of the very thick animosity?

Also I didn’t know this place had an embassy so hello I guess

Also why does the confederacy of corrupt dictators have an anti-fascist tag?

Why do they have the Anti-WA tag when they beg new arrivals to join it so their delegate gets more votes and make it a requirement for their Senate? Because they are quaint

Maybe in general, but around here things tend to stay pretty civil. I personally don't like talking about politics because it's a bit depressing.

My sarcasm detector was broken because I reread this post a few times in the wee hours of the morning and couldn't figure out if you were being serious or sarcastic.

Depends on the politics. I don't go to NS General where the dreaded RL politics lurk, it's just a more moderated reddit.

The final sith order wrote:Also why does the confederacy of corrupt dictators have an anti-fascist tag?

To distance themselves from their poor edgy life-choices made in their youth. Unfortunately, multiple self-condemns on their part and constant broadcasting of "we're fascist yo!" means people will not forget this for a very long time. And in NS, memories run for a long time, decades even.

Thank you for the update. Adaline is happy and will continue to encourage this region to collaborate with other regions that prioritize democracy, justice, environment, and egalitarianism.

So true!

By way of general updates for the populace, who I'm sure are just as curious about this as ourselves... we do not have any updates at present regarding when to expect our overdue elections.

In the previous situation like this, I asked government ministers to step back from duties during that time period due to my perception that our mandate was over, creating an interregnum of sorts. After our experiences in that however, it was made clear to me that our region needs a functioning government in place - even a few weeks with nobody at the helm causes long-lasting issues. For example, the Force embassy we just established is the result of more than six months of efforts - efforts that originally began during that interregnum and couldn't be acted on at the time as a result. That in mind, I have asked all our officers to continue operating as normal until such time as the election arrives, whenever that may be. The past few weeks since what should have been our electoral period have actually been among the most diplomatically intense of my entire time in office - it would be completely unfair to both the region and to the next government to leave such things unaddressed and waiting for them.

For my own part, I ask your indulgence for myself and all of our regional officers as we continue to operate in our roles until such time as the election is initiated. Forest comes first, and we will strive to do it justice. I hope to get another Transparency Report sent out soon to update everybody on this unexpected month's activities, and give as much of a look-ahead as we can given the uncertainty of our present situation.

Why and how would people remember something for that long?

That must seem just strange, does it?

Facebook for countries attract a certain style of people :P

In games of this type, where politics (both real and simulated) form a large part of the core gameplay activity, "the long game" is measured in years. There are groups and alliances active in NS that are older than some of our players, and memories necessarily are that long for troubles others have caused. CCD's blatantly real-world fascist activities are far from ancient history - it's less than a year since they allegedly gave those up. Given that they spent years lying about it before, nobody is going to immediately trust them now.

Something like the Guiding Hand Social Club assassination and theft in EVE Online is a taste of the sort of long-game skullduggery people will do in political games (worth a read if you're unfamiliar), with real world diplomats, government workers, and policy wonks trying their hand in a world without limits.

Darths and Droids wrote:Meanwhile I'd probably always take the long view. The fellow's a terrorist that has threatened my nation and killed lots and lots of my people. If he lives, many more will die. It is regrettable that the children will die as a consequence but that is collateral I'll have to deal with -- and so what if it radicalizes others to fight you, if that's the case then so be it. It may be a net-zero in PR but it is a gain in the fight because you've knocked out a major leader of the other side.

You can't always abide by morality in a war with the other side who does not give a flying fook about the rules of warfare, so why should you? Now, if it were a conventional enemy, then, yeah, the rules of war will apply. But terrorists? They live to create terror, as that's the only way they can do stuff without getting carpet-bombed in a conventional war. No matter, play by their rules, and they will cease to exist.

In universe, DND wouldn't let the kids die no matter how insane that sounds, while TAH would nuke the continent for good measure.

You see, the thing about that is

1) We don't actually know if the terrorist will kill again.

People mellow when they become parents, even terrorists. I suppose at fault on that one is the issue text itself, it should be tweaked to introduce that uncertainty. But there's still no 100% guarantee they actually will kill again.

2) The PR thing, which you pointed out but...

3) It's pernicious on security service culture.

Basically, whenever the 'dark arts' are allowed for security services, be it army, cops or spies, they will abuse it. There also, often is a glory aspect that gets introduced, with there being a long term insidious effect of personnel one-upping each other in service of the state. The only real way of dealing with it is to deny it from ever taking root. Taking the shot in the issue scenario introduces that unwelcome precedent.

Yikes.

Or both maybe?

I need a few examples of people like them.

that which ends is forgivable. if only long after.
forget the pain, but remember how it was caused, and how what caused it came about, and look for ways that actually work, for preventing that.

the lure of deterrence is easy to fall into the trap of vengeance, and sometimes, even usually, there are cultural strategies that just work better.

I love picking crazy issue options because they increase my weather score slightly. We love NationStates.

Today's a good day for me. After 10 months of chest pain, nausea, and other symptoms, visits to 6 different hospitals, many blood tests, and a handful of ECGs, ultrasounds, x-rays and so on, I just got a diagnosis. Apparently, I had the Coxsackie virus, and now it's gone but I need time to heal.

The treatment for this is to do no physical activity and eat iodine heavy foods for a few months. Basically, I'm supposed to sit around and eat packaged food. I've been trying to exercise more and eat healthier ever since this started, so it kind of explains why it got so bad. Though I do have to give up literally anything spicy, so that's a downside.

I was gunna complain about shingles, but jebus. Good to hear things are looking up for you.

Been reading about viruses generally over the last week, and am fascinated by their role in horizontal/inter-species genetic exchange and evolution. Two thoughts occur:

1) I need to re-watch Annihilation as I think there's some thematic overlap here.

2) We better get some superpowers or something, or i'm gunna be pissed /:|

I don't know about that. I hear shingles is pretty nasty. Of course, I've only had the one, but if you have or have had shingles, I hope you get better soon, or are doing better.

Why are you repeating a Republican catchphrase?

While it lasts...

100% FOR votes in Forest for my GA proposal

😁

You do realise that democracy and republic are not mutually exclusive? Right?

Great proposal! I see now there is one country who vote against it
