A whole new concept of region in NationStates, where people don't mind sharing their partners with anyone else. And those who mind are enforced by law not to mind.

The Atlantic Wars

by The northeastern confederation

THE ATLANTIC WARS

The atlantic wars were a series of conflicts between the coastal city-states of the northeastern region of brazil as a natural progression of the sertão wars as the scavenging model of economy collapses.

The atlantic wars were 4 main conflicts that dragged all or nearly all of the citties in the northeast, having as a protagonist and main winner, the city-state of Recife, who emerged from being the sidekick of its twin city, Olinda, to be the most powerful city in the region.

The Pernambucan Civil War / The Recifean War Of Independence

The first of the atlantic wars came after the olindense debt crisis, which caused a great devaluation of the city's currency and its subsequently bankrupcy. The war began with the recifean blockade, made by olinda to kill its competition in the maritime trade.

The conflict rapidly grew with Salvador and João Pessoa aiding Olinda, the first because it holded part of Olinda's debts and didn't want to deal with the increasing recifean competition on the southern trade. The second wanted to have strategic territorial gains in the south and took advantage of the instability to push it through.
João Pessoa also had another war in Natal against gangs backed by Fortaleza, who aligned itself with Recife for this reason.
Wanting to preserve the balance of power between baianos and pernambucanos in the Chicão river basin, Aracajívisú tried to stop Salvador from sending militias to the north.

Maceió, for the same reason, stayed out of the conflict. Teresina and São Luís didn't had any interest in joining any sides and also stayed neutral.

With Salvador in a war in the north, several groups located mostly in Porto Seguro and Ilhéus, started a rebellion which stalled Salvador's progress in the war and showed a weakness in its grip in Bahia.

For that reason, the final acts of the war was a race for Juazeiro/Petrolina, which triggered São Luís to intervene in the conflict in favor of a peace deal.

War Scenario

Recife's Allies: (from north to south)
1 - Fortaleza;
2 - Aracajú;

Olinda's Allies: (from north to south)

2 - Salvador;

1 - São Luís;
2 - Teresina;
3 - Maceió;

South Bahia's Rebellion Citties: (from north to south)
1 - Ilhéus;
2 - Porto Seguro.

Outcome

Recife's Zone of influence: (from north to south)
1 - João Pessoa;

2 - Teresina;
3 - Juazeiro/Petrolina;

The red and blue stripes in the map locate each player's gain in the war. The white stripes mean the former rebellious territories from Bahia, now pacified.

The Paraiban War

The second atlantic war happened over twenty years after the Treaty of São Luís, which ended the first war. It was triggered by a revolt in the pernambucan-align part of Paraíba, including the city of João Pessoa, by having local factions ousting the recifean allies that ruled the region since the war.

Fortaleza, driven by its ambitions of controlling the northern-most part of the sertão, supported the rebellion, irritating Recife, who then sent troops to contain the uprising. After a recifean blockade in the city, Fortaleza allowed its own militias to interfere in the conflict, forcing Recife to chase them down into Ceará, provoking a declaration of war from Fortaleza due to the violation of the Treaty.

Seeking an opportunity to contain its greatest rival in the sea and to increase even more its own influence in the northeast, Salvador crosses the Chicão river and attacks pernambuco, but is halted by Maceió, who wanted to avoid a Salvador-dominated chicão river.

With its southern flank guaranteed for the moment, Recife's militias assemble and march to Fortaleza, but are halted by their bigger numbers, forcing them to change their tatics to merely keep the enemy forces away from Pernambuco.

São Luís, stressed by the constant battles involving cearense militias in the vicinity of Piauí, sends a covert message to all parties involved to keep their forces east of rio acaraú, which recife promptly violated in the hopes that this would bring São Luís to their side.

War Scenario

Recife & Allies: (from north to south)

2 - Recife;
3 - Maceió;

Fortaleza & Allies: (from north to south)

1 - Teresina;
2 - Juazeiro/Petrolina.

Teresina becomes a dual zone of influence, with its political system having direct meddling of both Fortaleza and São Luís and its zone of influence now becomes a territory disputed between these powers within its political system.

The Northern War

The third atlantic war was initiated not in the northeast, but in the amazon river basin. With traders of both Belém and Macapá losing space in Manaus to traders of the northeast, especially those of Recife, they initiated a blockade on the river to force Manaus to give them rights of monopoly over their goods.

After months of blockade, Recife and Manaus coordinated military efforts, to trap the joint fleet of Belém and Macapá within the amazon river, which disrupts the trade for the two attackers as well.

With this new scenario, Belém and Macapá initiated talks to São Luís, who observed the conflict in neutrality until that moment. São Luís saw a very good opportunity to overshadow Recife's ambitions both in military might and as a commercial power. If they helped Belém and Macapá, they could at least cripple their navy, if not destroy it entirely. If they got to be part of the amazonian monopoly, São Luís would be the economic gates between the northeast and the northern/caribean trade.

After São Luís Joined the war, Fortaleza took the opportunity to expel them from the rest of Piauí and expand their territory all the way to the parnaíba river. Cearense militias also crossed the Mangabeiras Plateau and helped the recifean fleet to besiege, plunder and raze Belém out of existance.

War Scenario

Belém, was erased from existance.

The War of the Chicão

The last of the Atlantic Wars was the continuation of a series of conflicts within Bahia, whose political landscape was in turmoil ever since The Paraiban War. With Salvador in civil war, the neighbouring citties would take their matters to their own hands, making the region vulnerable to external threats.

Eventually, the Vaquejada of the Chicão attacked Juazeiro forcing Petrolina to seek help from Recife who, once there, manage to keep the city safe from the mounted warriors. The Vaquejada then proceeded to go towards Salvador but were stoped by the Salvadorian Continental Forces, keeping them in the north of Bahia, at the margins of the Chicão River and at the borders of Pernambuco and maceioan-Sergipe.

Recifean Leadership then, sensing the vulnerability of their southern flank, advanced into maceioan territory without warning, crossing the chicão river and bordering Bahia. Recife proposed that Maceió and Aracajú pledged alegiance to Recife, request only acepted by the latter. The former, declared war.

Knowing that, if consolidated, this anexation would make Recife into the uncontested hegemonic power of the northeast, Fortaleza also declared war on them, which of course pulled São Luís to attack them imediatelly.

Both sides of Salvador, Continentals and Islanders, declared war on Recife, although only the continentals had to fight them at first, since they were the only ones whose forces were in the north. Recife, then proceeded to aid the Vaquejada with weapons to force the Continental Salvadorians to sue for peace, which they didn't.

The Islanders, based in Itaparica Island, had to persuade southern Citties like Porto Seguro and Ilhéus to back their cause. Once that was secured, they swiftly defeated the Continentals, who were about to lose Feira de Santana to the Vaquejada. There, the Islanders started a great push against the Vaquejada until the reconquest of Juazeiro.

Having to fight in two different fronts, Recife peaced out, ending forever the neutrality of the Juazeiro-Petrolina region.
