Ahh, the Pogues...I'm a big fan of them. But you are correct, they are only ever culturally relevant anymore around Christmas time when that song finds airplay -- and it's a great song, so I am fine with that.

Kirsty MacColl sang on that one. I'm sure I've got a cassette somewhere with her singing "There's a guy works down the chip shop swears he's Elvis". The cassette came courtesy of Weetabix cereal, if you ate enough and sent off the tokens. It had four songs, including "Come on Eileen" by Dexy's Midnight Runners. I forget the other two songs. That would have been the first music I owned. Which is a very different thing from being the first music I ever bought...

That's such a great cereal box gift. Best I ever got was a misshapen bouncy ball meant to bounce at unpredictable angles. Which was pretty great, itself.

Hah, that's got to be one of the most "80s" videos I've seen. Fantastic. Never heard of her before, and didn't know she was the singer from "Fairytale."

Wikipedia tells me a tragic but heroic story regarding her death -- she saved her young son from being struck by a watercraft, sadly being killed herself in the process:

If a 7 is rolled before the next point, Don't Pass bets win. If the point is rolled before the next 7, Pass bets win. Field bets pay out if they match the point on the first throw. I've heard about that one.

Earthbound immortal squad wrote:I've heard about that one.

It's years ago that I read the book. I remember loving it. I hope the TV does it justice. I'm thinking that the angel and the demon should be okay, although they're not as I picture them. I think my problem will be with the boy, Adam. He always came across as being a rewrite of Richmal Crompton's Just William. I'll struggle if the character doesn't live up (or maybe that should read 'live down') to my expectations.
I grew up reading Just William (I had a gazillion of the books in varying stages of second-hand decay). My dad read them as a kid too, as did his dad before him. And reading Good Omens, you knew that at least one of Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman had that same deep relationship with William as we did. Even though Adam is meant to be an independent character, I've a horrible feeling that he'll be the sticking point for me.

I've been meaning to read more literature, I used to read quite a bit when I was younger but in later years I had to do English essays to any book I read so I lost interest, it just ruins the story when you pick apart every use of a language technique.

Yeah, there's nothing like an English essay to kill your enjoyment of a book! I must admit, I was very lucky in that I managed to pass my high school exam without having to read the book.

The book was dull as ditchwater anyhow. The teacher was focused on getting us to pass the exam. It was pretty clear that if you parroted back what the teacher taught us, we'd pass the exam. So I learned the synopsis, and the key learning points. Damned if I was going to read the book. I learned my "personal response" by rote.

The 450-ish page novel (which I hadn't read) was the story of a girl whose mother dies, whose father then beats up her beloved brother, until the brother leaves home, never to be seen again. She is treated like a slave by her dad until she is married off to a wife beater. She gets a guilt complex when her dad dies.
The husband then goes off to war to be killed.

The exam question, when it came, was a gift.
"English literature is depressing. Using a novel you have read recently, agree or disagree with the statement."
I just had to write out the plot, and add a comment that "if you haven't slashed your wrists by the end of this book, you're a hard hearted b*stard".
I got an A.

That sounds like it was the easiest question ever. God help the y11’s going they GCSE’s this year with AQA screwing up again with biology, that prophetically stupid 1-9 grading system as a 4 is a pass and 5 is a very good pass however rumours are that a 5 will be becoming the standard pass rate. I know a couple of y11’s one Earthbound immortal squad will know and the others I know from my riding yard and before you all ask yes I’m a horse rider.
