Hi, everyone! I'm new here but can't wait to take part in this (seemingly very cool) collection of nations. Just wondering - how do I interact with other nations? For like diplomacy, or battle (not that I want to attack anyone! hoping to prevent that, actually)

Hello, welcome to XKI.
Direct action between nations doesn't exist in NS game mechanics, per se. You can 'challenge' any other nation through a built in mini-game (look for the target icon on any other nation's page) but it is more of a stats fight. Engaging won't affect your nation itself, or your opponents. It's for points.
Military interaction in NS is likely not what you'd expect. You are under no risk of being attacked directly, nor can you 'attack' other nations. That said, there is region raiding and defending activity that takes place daily, in real time. As we are a defender region, joining TITO (our military) will give you an opportunity to learn how it all works. It's pretty fun, and it serves our region and the wider NS community.
Diplomacy takes place between the various regions within the game, and a nation can apply to become an ambassador or emissary to another region, through the forum. It is a position of trust, and it may take some time to establish yourself in the region to get such a posting, but it is beneficial to the region, and a chance to explore other regions' cultures.
If you are a RolePlayer, there are ample opportunities in NS to engage diplomatically and militarily in that way.
In all cases, the forum is a good place to start, to get the gist of how it all works.
