[hr][center][font=palatino][size=150]The following is a list of commonly-encountered terms from around the site that may not be immediately obvious to new or less-informed players. Please direct any questions to [nation=noflag]august[/nation].[/size][/font][/center][hr]

[anchor=a][/anchor][url=#a][color=black][size=400]A[/size][/color][/url]

[anchor=administrator][/anchor][url=#administrator][b]ADMINISTRATOR: [/b][/url]The highest-ranking site staff, in charge of writing code for new features and maintenance. They include Site Admin [violet], whose [url=#nation]nation[/url] (if any) is unknown; Game Admins Ballotonia, Eluvatar, SalusaSecondus, and Pythagosaurus; and Forum Admin Reploid Productions. The nation Testlandia, which is used jointly by the site staff as a test bed, is labeled as a Game Admin.

[anchor=antiquity][/anchor][url=#antiquity][b]ANTIQUITY: [/b][/url][url=#found]Founding[/url] date listed for any [url=#nation]nation[/url] created before December 2003. Prior to this date, [url=#nationstates]NationStates[/url] did not track founding dates. This is also used as a general term for the time period from November 2002, when the game launched, to December 2003.

Antiquity is also the name of the site theme used from November 2002 to January 2011. It was replaced by the [url=#century]Century[/url] theme.

[anchor=api][/anchor][url=#api][b]API: [/b][/url]Short for "Application Programming Interface." In terms of [url=#nationstates]NationStates[/url], it is essentially a data feed that allows player-created scripts to interact with the site. It is frequently used for automatic [url=#telegram]telegram[/url] programs and data-collection sites like [url=#nsdossier]NSDossier[/url].

[anchor=aprilfoolsday][/anchor][url=#aprilfoolsday][b]APRIL FOOLS' DAY: [/b][/url]Annual event celebrated on [url=#nationstates]NationStates[/url], often with temporary coded features. Past events have included a population reset (2004), a shutdown of the site by "Homeworld Security" (2005), the "NationDates" dating service (2006), Regional Moderators and the Most Likely to be Deleted census (2007), the change from the [url=#un]UN[/url] to the [url=#wa]WA[/url] (2008), the [url=http://nintendo.nationstates.net]Nintendo DS[/url] port of NationStates (2009), the [url=http://liberal.nationstates.net]Liberal[/url] and [url=http://nintendo.nationstates.net]Conservative[/url] themes (2010), a mass-hacking hoax (2011), an [url=/page=ipo]Initial Public Offering[/url] (2012), a [url=/page=zday_tally]zombie apocalypse[/url] (2013), the [url=/page=bytecoin_marketplace]ByteCoin exchange[/url] (2014), a [url=/page=cards]Cards Against NationStates[/url] minigame (2015), the [url=/page=election]WA Secretary-General[/url] election (2016), and the [url=/page=factions]nuclear war[/url] (2017). Some events have also included subforums, which are archived [url=http://forum.nationstates.net/viewforum.php?f=21]here[/url].

[anchor=b][/anchor][url=#b][color=black][size=400]B[/size][/color][/url]

[anchor=banject][/anchor][url=#banject][b]BANJECT: [/b][/url]Simultaneously [url=#ban]banning[/url] and [url=#eject]ejecting[/url] a [url=#nation]nation[/url]. Requires [url=#influence]Influence[/url].

[anchor=ban][/anchor][url=#ban][b]BAN: [/b][/url]In [url=#gameplay]gameplay[/url], barring a [url=#nation]nation[/url] from entering or reentering a [url=#region]region[/url], as well as posting on that region's RMB via embassy. A nation can only be banned if it exists, and if it appears on the Regional Happenings list or has posted on the RMB in the past. The banned nation can be unbanned by any nation with [url=#bordercontrol]Border Control[/url] powers. Bans can be viewed on a region's Region Admin page. Each region is limited to two hundred banned nations at any one time, and any particular nation's bans expire shortly after that nation ceases to exist.

A ban can also be levied on a player by a [url=#moderator]moderator[/url]. This could be a [url=#forum]forum[/url] ban, a [url=#regionalmessageboard]Regional Message Board[/url] ban, or a [url=#telegram]telegram[/url] ban. These bans are in response to egregious rule-breaking through one of those mediums, and expire after a set amount of time. It is important to note that unlike a regional ban, a moderator ban applies to all a player's nations, not just one.

[anchor=banner][/anchor][url=#banner][b]BANNER: [/b][/url]The slideshow images displayed at the top of [url=#nation]nation[/url] pages. The banner selection can be modified by hovering over the banner and following the "Choose Banners" link. New banners are unlocked by achieving various national attributes. Custom banners, which are player-uploaded images, are unlocked at [url=#population]populations[/url] of 50 million, 200 million, 1 billion, 10 billion, and 20 billion.

[anchor=bbcode][/anchor][url=#bbcode][b]BBCODE: [/b][/url]Formatting codes used on phpBB [url=#forum]forums[/url], such as the [url=#nationstates]NationStates[/url] forum. A special kind of BBCode called [url=#nscode]NSCode[/url] is present everywhere on the site, except the forum. Examples of BBCodes include: [pre][b] = Bold
[i] = Italics
[u] = Underline[/pre]
[anchor=bordercontrol][/anchor][url=#bordercontrol][b]BORDER CONTROL: [/b][/url]Authority to [url=#eject]eject[/url] and [url=#ban]ban[/url] nations, or [url=#password]password[/url] [url=#region]regions[/url].

[anchor=boneyard][/anchor][url=#boneyard][b]BONEYARD: [/b][/url]Page used to find old [url=#nation]nations[/url], located [url=/page=boneyard]here[/url]. The Boneyard was introduced after the [url=/page=news/2011/09/21/index.html]2011 Name Release[/url], and continues to function as the most reliable way to check the status of dead nations. Details given include when a nation was founded and [url=#ceasetoexist]ceased to exist[/url], when previous incarnations were founded and ceased to exist (if any), whether it can be refounded by a new player, and if not, what criteria it fails to meet.

[anchor=c][/anchor][url=#c][color=black][size=400]C[/size][/color][/url]

[anchor=campaign][/anchor][url=#campaign][b]CAMPAIGN: [/b][/url]Can refer to several things. [url=#wa]WA[/url] campaigns consist of [url=#telegram]telegrams[/url] sent to [url=#delegate]delegates[/url], or WA members in general, in an attempt to promote or attack a [url=#proposal]proposal[/url] or [url=#resolution]resolution[/url] at vote. These telegrams must be specially marked as campaign telegrams.

[url=#endorsement]Endorsement[/url] or unendorsement campaigns are usually telegram-based, and are meant to convince WA members in a particular [url=#region]region[/url] to endorse or unendorse a specific nation, respectively.

A campaign can also be any attempt to gather support for a nation's run at political office in a region.

[anchor=catcher][/anchor][url=#catcher][b]CATCHER: [/b][/url]An infrequently-used term for [region]The Rejected Realms[/region], due to the fact that it "catches" [url=#nation]nations[/url] that have been [url=#eject]ejected[/url]. The term is parallel to [url=#feeder]Feeder[/url] or [url=#sinker]Sinker[/url].

[anchor=ceasetoexist][/anchor][url=#ceasetoexist][b]CEASE TO EXIST: [/b][/url]The fate of [url=#nation]nations[/url] that have not been logged into for 28 consecutive days. This timeline is extended to 60 days for nations with [url=vacationmode]Vacation Mode[/url] enabled. Nations that have ceased to exist due to inactivity can no longer be viewed, but their owners may recover them at any time by logging in and following the prompts.

The term "ceased to exist" can also refer to nations that have been deleted for rule-breaking. These nations may never be recovered. It is more common to refer to such nations as simply "deleted."

[anchor=century][/anchor][url=#century][b]CENTURY: [/b][/url]Site theme used from January 2011 to February 2015.

[anchor=civilheadquarters][/anchor][url=#civilheadquarters][b]CIVIL HEADQUARTERS: [/b][/url]Former name for the [url=#regionalmessageboard]Regional Message Board[/url], under the [url=#antiquity]Antiquity[/url] theme. It was frequently called the Regional Message Board at the time, although that name was never used officially until its adoption in the [url=#century]Century[/url] theme.

[anchor=civilrights][/anchor][url=#civilrights][b]CIVIL RIGHTS: [/b][/url]One of three major [url=#worldcensus]World Census[/url] categories on [url=#nation]nation[/url] pages, along with [url=#economy]Economic Efficiency[/url] and [url=#politicalfreedom]Political Freedom[/url], and one of the three freedom categories, along with [url=#economicfreedom]Economic Freedom[/url] and Political Freedom. It is affected by most [url=#issue]issues[/url] pertaining to personal freedoms.

[anchor=challenge][/anchor][url=#challenge][b]CHALLENGE: [/b][/url]Mini-game added for [url=#nationstates]NationStates'[/url] 10th birthday, located [url=/page=challenge]here[/url], and accessible from [url=#nation]nation[/url] pages. The game allows players to compare their nations on a randomly-selected list of statistics, with the winner receiving points that contribute to a worldwide ranking.

[anchor=chasing][/anchor][url=#chasing][b]CHASING: [/b][/url]A type of [url=#defending]defending[/url] that involves preventing [url=#tagging]tags[/url]. When chasing, a group of defenders [url=#crossendorsing]cross-endorse[/url], then watch the Reports page to [url=#spotting]spot[/url] tag raids in progress. Upon sighting one, they all move to the target [url=#region]region[/url].

[anchor=chq][/anchor][url=#chq][b]CHQ: [/b][/url]See [url=#civilheadquarters]Civil Headquarters[/url].

[anchor=classregion][/anchor][url=#classregion][b]CLASS REGION: [/b][/url][url=#region]Region[/url] specifically designated for use by a school class. For more information, see [url=/page=educators]here[/url].

[anchor=classification][/anchor][url=#classification][b]CLASSIFICATION: [/b][/url]Government type assigned by the [url=#worldassembly]World Assembly[/url]. Classifications are based on [url=#politicalfreedom]political freedom[/url], [url=#economicfreedom]economic freedom[/url], and [url=#civilrights]civil rights[/url], each of which can be low, medium, or high.

[spoiler=Classifications][img]https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/7/72/Updated_NS_Graph.png[/img][/spoiler]

[anchor=commendation][/anchor][url=#commendation][b]COMMENDATION: [/b][/url]Type of resolution contained by the [url=#securitycouncil]Security Council[/url]. A commendation places a [url=/images/commend.png]blue and gold image[/url] on the page of the target [url=#nation]nation[/url] or [url=#region]region[/url].

[anchor=compare][/anchor][url=#compare][b]COMPARE: [/b][/url]Predecessor to the Rank feature added in 2016. It continues to function, and is located [url=/page=compare]here[/url]. It allows players to create side-by-side comparisons of any nations, up to a certain limit, in any statistical category.

[anchor=condemnation][/anchor][url=#condemnation][b]CONDEMNATION: [/b][/url]Type of resolution contained by the [url=#securitycouncil]Security Council[/url]. A condemnation places a [url=/images/condemn.png]black and orange image[/url] on the page of the target [url=#nation]nation[/url] or [url=#region]region[/url].

[anchor=d][/anchor][url=#d][color=black][size=400]D[/size][/color][/url]

[anchor=deat][/anchor][url=#deat][b]DEAT: [/b][/url]Slang term for "delete," when referring to the deletion of a [url=#nation]nation[/url] by a [url=#moderator]moderator[/url]. The origins are unclear, but it probably began as a corruption of the word "death." It is not an acronym.

[anchor=defending][/anchor][url=#defending][b]DEFENDING: [/b][/url]In the context of military [url=#gameplay]gameplay[/url], moving [url=#worldassembly]World Assembly[/url] member [url=#nation]nations[/url] into a [url=#region]region[/url] en masse to [url=#endorse]endorse[/url] either a defender nation or the native [url=#delegate]delegate[/url], for the purpose of preventing a [url=#raiding]raid[/url]. There have been many organizations dedicated to defending over the course of history. Frequently, they are differentiated by their motivations. Some defending organizations are "moralists" (ie, they defend because they believe it is right), while others defend strictly for enjoyment.

[anchor=delegate][/anchor][url=#delegate][b]DELEGATE: [/b][/url]Representative of a [url=#region]region[/url] before the [url=#worldassembly]World Assembly[/url]. The delegate of a region is the [url=#nation]nation[/url] with the most [url=#endorsement]endorsements[/url] in that region when it [url=#update]updates[/url]. When voting on [url=#resolution]resolutions[/url] in the World Assembly, their number of endorsements is added onto their individual vote, which gives major delegates significant power over the result. Delegates also have the power to approve [url=#proposal]proposals[/url].

The delegate of a region is also important in political and military [url=#gameplay]gameplay[/url], especially [url=#raiding]raiding[/url] and [url=#defending]defending[/url]. The position may have [url=#executive]executive[/url] authority if the [url=#founder]founder[/url] has allowed it or is absent from the region for any reason. In this case, the delegate's power over the region is limited only by [url=#influence]influence[/url].

[anchor=deleteonsight][/anchor][url=#deleteonsight][b]DELETE ON SIGHT: [/b][/url]The most severe level of punishment used by the [url=#moderator]moderation team[/url]. When a player is declared Delete On Sight, all their [url=#nation]nations[/url] are deleted, and any nations they create in the future will be deleted upon discovery. Occasionally, Delete On Sight players are also IP-banned from the site, but due to the imprecise and changing nature of IP addresses, this is not always a deterrent.

[anchor=dos][/anchor][url=#dos][b]DOS: [/b][/url]See [url=#deleteonsight]Delete On Sight[/url].

[anchor=discord][/anchor][url=#discord][b]DISCORD: [/b][/url]Offsite chat platform used by [url=#region]regions[/url] and organizations in [url=#nationstates]NationStates[/url] as a more private and flexible alternative to the [url=#rmb]Regional Message Board[/url]. Its use became widespread in 2016, largely supplanting platforms like Skype and [url=#irc]IRC[/url].

[anchor=dispatch][/anchor][url=#dispatch][b]DISPATCH: [/b][/url]Pages written by a player for any purpose. Common subjects include news posts, policy announcements, and reference articles like this one. They are attached to a specific [url=#nation]nation[/url], are visible through that nation's Dispatch tab, and may be formatted with [url=#nscode]NSCodes[/url]. A list of all dispatches can be found [url=/page=dispatches]here[/url].

[anchor=dossier][/anchor][url=#dossier][b]DOSSIER: [/b][/url]List of [url=#nation]nations[/url] and [url=#region]regions[/url] kept by a player for the purposes of intelligence or quick access. Every nation has an individual dossier, which is capable of storing 2500 nations and regions, and players can upload and download text files containing the names. Dossiers can be used for [url=#recruiting]recruiting[/url], by recording nations that have received a [url=#telegram]telegram[/url]; military intelligence-gathering, by tracking known [url=#rd]R/D[/url] puppets; or accessibility, because the first twenty nations and regions in a dossier are displayed when mousing over the Dossier button.

[anchor=e][/anchor][url=#e][color=black][size=400]E[/size][/color][/url]

[anchor=easteregg][/anchor][url=#easteregg][b]EASTER EGG: [/b][/url]Special [url=#issue]issue[/url] unlocked by secret criteria. Unlike normal issues, each one can only be received once by any particular [url=#nation]nation[/url], but receiving all of them over time is possible. Upon receiving its first Easter Egg, a nation gains the Easter Egg [url=#trophy]trophy[/url], which is placed next to the [url=#founder]Founder[/url] and [url=#supporter]Supporter[/url] trophies, if applicable. The color of the trophy varies depending on the number of Easter Eggs received.

[anchor=economicfreedom][/anchor][url=#economicfreedom][b]ECONOMIC FREEDOM: [/b][/url]One of the three [url=#worldcensus]World Census[/url] freedom categories, along with [url=#politicalfreedom]Political Freedom[/url] and [url=#civilrights]Civil Rights[/url]. It is not the same as [url=#economy]Economic Efficiency[/url], and is not displayed on [url=#nation]nation[/url] pages.

[anchor=economy][/anchor][url=#economy][b]ECONOMY: [/b][/url]One of three major [url=#worldcensus]World Census[/url] categories on [url=#nation]nation[/url] pages, along with [url=#civilrights]Civil Rights[/url] and [url=#politicalfreedom]Political Freedom[/url]. It is more correctly known as Economic Efficiency, and it is not the same as [url=#economicfreedom]Economic Freedom[/url]. The category is based on Average Income, Business Subsidization, [url=#population]Population[/url], and potentially other categories.

[anchor=eject][/anchor][url=#eject][b]EJECT: [/b][/url]In [url=#gameplay]gameplay[/url], forcibly removing a [url=#nation]nation[/url] from a [url=#region]region[/url]. This action can be taken by any nation with [url=#bordercontrol]Border Control[/url] powers. Ejections from any one region are limited to one per second.

[anchor=embassy][/anchor][url=#embassy][b]EMBASSY: [/b][/url]An in-game connection between two [url=#region]regions[/url]. A region's embassy regions, if any, will be listed under its [url=#worldfactbookentry]World Factbook Entry[/url], and embassy openings and closures are recorded on both regions' [url=#history]History[/url] pages. [url=#nation]Nations[/url] in regions connected by embassies can post on the other region's [url=#regionalmessageboard]RMB[/url], if the appropriate setting is enabled on the [url=#regioncontrol]Region Control[/url] page by a nation with Embassies authority.

[anchor=endo][/anchor][url=#endo][b]ENDO: [/b][/url]See [url=#endorsement]Endorsement[/url].

[anchor=endocap][/anchor][url=#endo][b]ENDO-CAP: [/b][/url]An artificial limit placed on the number of [url=#endorsement]endorsements[/url] that [url=#nation]nations[/url] can have, usually by their [url=#region]region's[/url] government. Endo-caps are not a game function, so to enforce such policies, regional officials usually [url=#telegram]telegram[/url] nations that have exceeded the number, [url=#eject]eject[/url] those nations from the region, or both. Most of the time, endo-caps are put in place to prevent nations from replacing the [url=#delegate]delegate[/url].

[anchor=endoswap][/anchor][url=#endo][b]ENDO-SWAP: [/b][/url]For a [url=#nation]nation[/url] to [url=#endorsement]endorse[/url] all or most of a [url=#region]region's[/url] [url=#worldassembly]WA[/url] member nations, in an effort to gain endorsements in exchange. This method may be accompanied by [url=#telegram]telegrams[/url] or [url=#regionalmessageboard]RMB[/url] posts asking for endorsements.

[anchor=endotart][/anchor][url=#endo][b]ENDO-TART: [/b][/url]See [url=#endoswap]Endo-Swap[/url].

[anchor=endorsement][/anchor][url=#endorsement][b]ENDORSEMENT: [/b][/url]A display of support from one [url=#nation]nation[/url] to another. Endorsements can only be exchanged between two [url=#worldassembly]World Assembly[/url] member nations residing in the same [url=#region]region[/url]. They have a number of [url=#gameplay]gameplay[/url] effects, including the determination of each region's [url=#delegate]delegate[/url], and an increased rate of [url=#influence]influence[/url] gain for the receiving nation.

[anchor=executive][/anchor][url=#executive][b]EXECUTIVE: [/b][/url]A permission in [url=#regioncontrol]Region Control[/url] that allows a [url=#founder]founder[/url] or [url=#delegate]delegate[/url] (where applicable) to appoint, dismiss, and modify [url=#regionalofficer]Regional Officers[/url]. An executive founder can also change the executive status of their [url=#region]region's[/url] delegate at no cost.

[anchor=f7][/anchor][url=#f7][b]F7: [/b][/url]Commonly-used initialism for the Forum 7 subforum.

[anchor=factbook][/anchor][url=#factbook][b]FACTBOOK: [/b][/url]Pages written by a player for the purpose of showcasing specific aspects of their [url=#nation]nation[/url], such as its culture, military, or government. They are attached to the publishing nation, are visible through its Factbook tab, and may be formatted with [url=#nscode]NSCodes[/url]. A list of all factbooks can be found [url=/page=dispatches/category=1]here[/url].

[anchor=faq][/anchor][url=#faq][b]FAQ: [/b][/url]Frequently Asked Questions about the site, located [url=/page=faq]here[/url].

[anchor=featuredregion][/anchor][url=#featuredregion][b]FEATURED REGION: [/b][/url]A randomly-selected [url=#region]region[/url] displayed on the World page and changed daily. To be chosen, a region must have at least five nations and no password.

[anchor=feeder][/anchor][url=#feeder][b]FEEDER: [/b][/url]A founderless [url=#region]region[/url] in which new [url=#nation]nations[/url] are created. These regions, which were created by the game in [url=#antiquity]Antiquity[/url], include [region]The Pacific[/region] (the first public region ever created), [region]The West Pacific[/region], [region]The East Pacific[/region], [region]The North Pacific[/region], and [region]The South Pacific[/region].

[anchor=forum][/anchor][url=#forum][b]FORUM: [/b][/url]Generally, a structured, online communication platform. In context, the term usually refers to the game's onsite forum, located [url=https://forum.nationstates.net]here[/url]. [url=#region]Regions[/url] and other organizations frequently have their own offsite forums for various purposes.

[anchor=found][/anchor][url=#found][b]FOUND: [/b][/url]Creating a [url=#nation]nation[/url] or [url=#region]region[/url]. Usually this implies doing so for the first time with a particular name. Otherwise, [url=refound]"refound"[/url] is used.

[anchor=founder][/anchor][url=#founder][b]FOUNDER: [/b][/url]The player credited with the [url=#found]founding[/url] of a [url=#region]region[/url]. This can also refer to the [url=#nation]nation[/url] used to found that region. Founders were introduced in 2003, at which time regions were given the option of selecting a nation as their founder. Some [url=#usercreatedregion]user-created regions[/url] formed prior to that date are still in existence without founders.

[anchor=founderless][/anchor][url=#founderless][b]FOUNDERLESS: [/b][/url]In [url=#gameplay]gameplay[/url], any [url=#region]region[/url] without a [url=#founder]founder[/url]. This is usually because the founder has [url=#ceasetoexist]ceased to exist[/url], but there are several regions that were created before the introduction of founders in 2003, and survive to this day. [url=#gamecreatedregion]Game-Created Regions[/url] also fall under this category.

[anchor=ft][/anchor][url=#ft][b]FT: [/b][/url]See [url=#futuretech]Future Tech[/url].

[anchor=futuretech][/anchor][url=#futuretech][b]FUTURE TECH: [/b][/url]A [url=#roleplay]roleplay[/url] term referring to [url=#nations]nations[/url] that exist in the future and rely on highly advanced technology, such as vehicles capable of deep space travel.

[anchor=ga][/anchor][url=#ga][b]GA: [/b][/url]See [url=#generalassembly]General Assembly[/url].

[anchor=gamecreatedregion][/anchor][url=#gamecreatedregion][b]GAME-CREATED REGION: [/b][/url]Any region that is built into NationStates, as opposed to user-created regions. Game-created regions include the Feeders, Sinkers, and Warzones, and they cannot be passworded or refounded. Because they have no founders, they are controlled by their delegates. They make up a very small percentage of the world's overall number of regions, but typically contain about a third of all nations.

[anchor=gameplay][/anchor][url=#gameplay][b]GAMEPLAY: [/b][/url]Area of the game concerned primarily with [url=#region]regions[/url]. Gameplay encompasses [url=#rd]R/D[/url], regional politics and conflict, and community-building.
