Visayan Navy Register

The Visayan Navy Register is the official inventory of ships and service craft in custody of or titled by the Visayan Confederation Navy. It contains information on ships and service craft that make up the official inventory of the Navy from the time a vessel is authorized through its life cycle and disposal.

The Register fulfills an important function in international law that requires warships to be commanded by a commissioned officer whose name appears in the appropriate service list.

All commissioned ships of the Visayan Confederation Navy use the prefix VCS (Visayan Confederation Ship), and use American hull classification symbols.

Frigates

During the Philippine Civil War the nascent Free Visayan Navy started with a flotilla of several warships; the vast majority of these ships were crewed by defectors to the Free Visayan Republic. Frigates were the largest surface combatants the Republic had in their time, before years of modernization transformed what is now the Visayan Confederation Navy into a blue-water power.

Visayan frigates use the hull classification symbols FF and FFG. Beginning with VCS Aquila, frigates are named after constellations.

While the two Cannon-class destroyer escorts are still commissioned, they do not count toward Navy force levels, instead serving as ceremonial flagships; VCS Don Carlos Humabon serves as the ceremonial flagship of the Department of Defense, while VCS Datu Sikatuna serves as the ceremonial flagship of the entire Visayan Confederation Navy.

Destroyers

In 1994, the Confederation began building destroyers as a means of transitioning into a blue-water naval power. As destroyers were being built, crews from the frigates that served as the Visayan mainstay eventually took to these new ships; before long, destroyers supplanted frigates as the backbone of the Confederation Navy.

Visayan destroyers use the hull classification symbols DD and DDG; however, every ship commissioned in Visayan service was a guided missile destroyer. Arleigh Burke-class destroyers are named after saints, while Zumwalt-class destroyers are named after prominent Visayans in 20th Century Philippine history.

Cruisers

In 1998, the Confederation began building cruisers as a means of transitioning into a blue-water naval power. As cruisers were being built, crews from the destroyers that served as the Visayan backbone eventually took to these new ships; before long, cruisers became the capital ships of the Confederation Navy before being supplanted by amphibious assault ships in 2007 and aircraft carriers in 2011.

Visayan cruisers use the hull classification symbols CG or CGN; Ticonderoga-class cruisers are named after prominent people in pre-20th Century Visayan history, only few of whom lived to see the 20th Century, while Maighdean-class cruisers are named after the Founding Fathers and Mothers of the Confederation.

Amphibious Warfare Ships

In 2000, the Confederation began building various amphibious warfare ships to replace obsolete ones and augment the amphibious warfare capabilities of the Visayan Armed Forces. As ships were being built, crews from obsolete ships were transferred to new ones, and obsolete ships sold off for scrap, sunk to form artificial reefs, or in a few cases converted to museums.

2002 saw the Confederation's first foray into naval aviation; the first Wasp-class amphibious assault ship in Visayan service was laid down in 2003, launched in 2005, and commissioned in 2007 with a complement of 20 AV-8B Harrier II attack aircraft and 6 MH-60R Seahawks.

Visayan amphibious warfare ships use hull classification symbols befitting their role:

  • Wasp-class multipurpose amphibious assault ships use the hull classification symbol LHD and are named after provincial capitals.

  • San Antonio-class amphibious transport docks use the hull classification symbol LPD and are named after towns.

  • Harpers Ferry-class dock landing ships use the hull classification symbol LSD and are named after extant and historical city districts.

  • Blue Ridge-class command ships use the hull classification symbol LCC and are named after memorable typhoons.

Aircraft Carriers

In 2005, the Confederation began building aircraft carriers to further improve force projection capabilities, shaking the Philippine Islands when the first Nimitz-class aircraft carrier, VCS Kali Pulako, was commissioned in 2011 with a full carrier air wing.

Visayan aircraft carriers, regardless of class, are named after precolonial and first contact persons, and use the hull classification symbols CV and CVN; however, as all of the Confederation's aircraft carriers are nuclear powered, there are currently no ships with the hull classification symbol CV in Visayan service.

  4. CVN-4 - VCS Antonio Pigafetta - Gerald R. Ford-class CVN - Active (2017-present)

Each aircraft carrier has a matching Carrier Air Wing assigned to it.

Submarines

In 2002, the Confederation began building submarines to augment its subsurface capabilities after analysis from the College of Naval Warfare indicated deficiencies in aforementioned capabilities. The first submarines in Visayan service were commissioned in 2009, all of which used air-independent propulsion; it would not be until 2012 that the first nuclear-powered submarines in Visayan service were commissioned.

Submarines carried a strategic use as well; the first missile submarines in Visayan service were commissioned in 2015. Eight Ohio-class submarines are in Visayan service, four as guided missile submarines carrying Tomahawk cruise missiles and four as ballistic missile submarines carrying the Trident II SLBM.

Visayan attack submarines, regardless of class, are named after stars, and use the hull classification symbols SSP or SSN. The Ohio-class submarines in Visayan service are named after provinces, regardless of role, and use the hull classification symbols SSGN for even-numbered boats and SSBN for odd-numbered boats.
