HUMANS

Humans (el: Echil; xn: 人) are the majority species of the Lotus Islands. They are by far one of the most technologically advanced civilizations in the islands and possess many rich and expansive cultures within their society. Humans are terrestrial animals, characterized by their erect posture and bipedal locomotion; high manual dexterity and heavy tool use compared to most other animals; open-ended and complex language use compared to other animal communications; larger, more complex brains than most other primates; and highly advanced and organized societies.

Archaeologically, the first instance of a modern human was found in a gravesite on the island of Riqi dating back to 70,000 B.C.E. It is generally believed that humans are not a native species to the Lotus Islands, although this common theory is often disputed by human scholars. Since their arrival on the Lotus Islands, humans have come to dominate the island of Riqi, Taluwai, and the eastern portion of the central island of Zhongdi. Humans are one of seven species that use systems of symbolic communication as language and art to express themselves and exchange ideas, and also organize themselves into purposeful groups. Humans create complex social structures composed of many cooperating and competing groups, from families and kinship networks to political states. Social interactions between humans have established an extremely wide variety of values, social norms, and rituals, which together undergird human society. Curiosity and the human desire to understand and influence the environment and to explain and manipulate phenomena (or events) have motivated humanity's development of science, philosophy, mythology, religion, and numerous other fields of knowledge.

Although there is evidence that early humans were sustained by hunting and gathering in band societies, many human societies transitioned to sedentary agriculture approximately 50,000 years ago, domesticating plants and animals following interactions with the native elf species which enabled the growth of human civilization. These human societies subsequently expanded, establishing various forms of government, religion, and culture on the islands, and unifying people within regions to form states and empires. The rapid advancement of scientific and medical understanding in the 16th and 17th centuries permitted the development of fuel-driven technologies and increased lifespans, causing the human population to rise exponentially. The human population on the islands is estimated to be near 4.51 billion in 2110.

Unlike the native elves of the Lotus Islands, humans age relatively quickly with an average lifespan of 102.2 years and are relatively short with a weight comparable to elves. The average height and weight of a human are 1.73 meters and 74.8 kilograms respectively. In comparison to elves, human females have a relatively high fertility rate and only carry their baby over a period of 36 weeks (nine months) which largely contributes to the dominance of the human population. Compared to elves, however, humans are not as biologically diverse with no recognized subspecies of humans. Instead, human diversity comes from ethnic and cultural divisions, and the greatest degree of genetic variation actually exists between males and females.

Most humans are incapable of utilizing the primal magic that most native species of the Lotus Islands possess, save for the Han ethnic group. Instead, human society has moved to rely on technological advancement and cultivation magic. Cultivation magic focuses on developing or cultivating the inner qi (氣), or vital energy, of a living being. This is in contrast to the primal magic of the island which focuses on using the outward qi, or curu in elvish, to shape the world. The origin of cultivation magic can be traced back to the Three Legendary Teachers; Baoshan Sanren (抱山散人), Wen Mao (溫卯), and Lan An (藍安); who developed the principles for cultivation in 5,000 B.C.E. Since then, cultivation magic has been utilized in both combat and society. Only a small percentage of the human population is capable of cultivating their inner qi, however, which has led to some alternate techniques such as demonic cultivation (the process of using resentful qi (怨氣) from lost souls) and life cultivation (the manipulation of the inner qi of others). These alternate techniques are even rarer, however, and thus the majority of human civilization has resorted to technological development. Although human technological innovation lags behind elven innovation in several key areas, primarily in the arms department, humans excel in agricultural, architectural, energy, industrial, autonomous machine, and healthcare advancements, most of these developed as a result of a lack of access to primal magic. These technological developments have enabled human civilization to grow at the speed it has throughout the past millennia but are scoffed at by other species with an innate connection to the primal magic of the islands.

Among the human cultures on the Lotus Islands, three major ethnic groups exist alongside over a hundred minor ethnic groups. The dominant ethnicity within human civilization is the Han (el: Qino; xn: 漢人), making up 77.4% of the human population. The other two major ethnic groups are the Ri (el: Nipon; 日人) and the Hang (el: Coreo; xn: 韓人) which make up 11.3% and 9.2% respectively. The remaining 2.1% of the human population consists of a hundred other ethnic minorities.

ELVES

Elves (el: Edhel; xn: 靈) are the most numerous sapient native species to the Lotus Islands. They are by far the most advanced species within the Lotus Islands and possess a society that predates all other species, earning them the nickname "Elder Ones." Elves are majority terrestrial creatures, excluding one subspecies, characterized by their erect posture and bipedal locomotion although some genetic variation exists; high manual dexterity and heavy tool use compared to other native inhabitants; open-ended and complex language use compared to other iaurian communications; larger, more complex brains than most other native inhabitants; highly advanced and organized societies; and the ability to wield primal magic.

The species known as the modern elf has been present on the Lotus Islands for at least 520,000 years. The earliest elven skeleton was found in a burial site near the city of Menel alongside urns, jewelry, and several preserved plants still imbued with primal magic. The divergence of the primal elven race into the nine elven subspecies is believed to have gradually occurred from 700,000 B.C.E to 600,000 B.C.E., theorized to be a result of the primal elves becoming attuned to the primal magic of their respective regions. Elves are currently the dominant race on the western islands, primarily western Zhongdi where a majority of elven cities lay. Similar to humans, elves are one of seven species that use systems of symbolic communication as language and art to express themselves and exchange ideas, and also organize themselves into purposeful groups. Elves have long had complex social structures composed of many cooperating and competing groups, from families and kinship networks to political states. Interactions, both social and with the island itself, have established an extremely wide variety of values, social norms, and rituals, which together undergird elven society. Unlike humans, elves are motivated by their curiosity of co-existing the world rather than manipulating it which has led to the development of complex philosophical and scientific ideas within elven society that are often misunderstood by humans. This acceptance of the world has often led to elves being perceived as haughty and aloof to humans.

As primal magic sustains elves, there is no specific point in history in which elves switched to an agricultural society. Instead, elves have always coexisted with the Lotus Island, their sustenance guaranteed by the world around them. This does not mean elves do not understand concepts such as animal husbandry, agriculture, and other methods of sustenance, as shown by the elves teaching early humans these concepts. Instead, their physiology simply does not require them to use these methods for sustenance. Elven civilizations had already developed on the island of Zhongdi by the year 120,000 B.C.E., as archeological findings have found. However, with the introduction of humans to the island, elves were slowly pushed to the western portion of the island due to the rapid growth of the human population. Elves continue to dominate in several key scientific areas, however and have maintained their superiority in the field of magic. The elven population on the islands is estimated to be near 2.73 billion in 2110.

Elves have incredibly long lifespans with an average lifespan of 4,000 years. In comparison to humans, elven females have a relatively low fertility rate and carry their baby over a period of 88 weeks (twenty-two months) which has led to smaller population size. There exist nine subspecies of elf: wildblade elves, darkglow elves, moonshadow elves, startouched elves, sunfire elves, skywing elves, earthblood elves, tidebound elves, and snowflurry elves. Each subspecies of elf corresponds with a specific primal element found on the island and is naturally capable of utilizing some form of magic related to that element. Similar to humans, however, elves have a biological male and female sex.

The appearance of elves also varies wildly not only between different subspecies but also according to the purity of an individual's blood. Full-blood elves often resemble wild creatures whereas half-blood elves resemble majestic humans. As a result of thousands of years of interspecies mating, a majority of the elven population has at least a small amount of genetic material from humans with the vice versa also being true for humans. The difference in appearances has often resulted in discrimination against half-blood elves and many full-blood elves pride themselves in their "purity." In addition to cross-breeding with humans, elves of different species are also capable of cross-breeding. Their offspring are referred to as mixed elves (el: Remedhel), regardless of their parents' species.

The concept of "using" primal magic is similar to how a human would "use" an arm or a leg. In other words, for elves, using primal magic comes naturally and is essentially an extension of their body. Based on their subspecies' primal connection, elves are capable of manipulating the world around them, whether this be condensing primal energy into one spot or using the primal energy as an extra pair of sensory organs. The downside to this ability is that it does not work in areas deprived of primal magic. There are specific areas in the world known as "deadzones" that are similar to a sinkhole that sucks in primal energy rather than radiating it. These regions are especially dangerous to natives of the island as it essentially drains them of their life force. These "deadzones" are rare, however, and most have been quarantined by the government. Outside of the Lotus Islands, it is theorized that primal magic exists but in dispelled forms, thus allowing elves and other species native to the island to stay alive and use basic forms of magic. Another option is the use of primal items which are essentially large quantities of primal energy condensed into one item. Elves who are subjected to an immediate drop in concentrations of primal magic usually experience symptoms of nausea and fever for several hours before their body can generate enough primal energy to counteract the sudden drop.

Wildblade Elf; Dredhel

Nature

Avg. height: 1.73 meters
Avg. height: 59.4 kilograms

Eye color: shades of green
Hair color: light brown, dark brown, black
Skin color: dark tan, tan with green tint, light tan
Horn color: dark brown, light brown, black, white

Hand digits: four (3 fingers, 1 thumb)
Feet digits: two
Other: brown fur, white tuft tail

Wildblade elves are considered to be the most "relaxed," save for the earthblood elves, in terms of traditions. What few laws and traditions that exist are recorded in the Commandments of Rimmon (el: Axan-rimmon) which dictate that the wildblade elves may bend nature to its will, but that it may never destroy it. Additionally, for any animal that a wildblade elf kills, that animal's remains must be used completely.

Wildblade elves are considered to be the friendliest and most open elven society, although their reclusiveness and the dangers of their forested home often keep outsiders from entering. Due to the wildblade elves' overly protective nature of their homeland from those who would harm the forests of Rimmon, the region continues to exist as one of the last untouched natural forest bastions on the island of Ennor. With an acute sense of smell and hearing along with light feet and the ability to see on the infrared spectrum, wildblade elves are naturally gifted hunters and scouts.

Darkglow Elf; Mornedhel

Darkness

Avg. height: 1.6 meters
Avg. height: 67.8 kilograms

Eye color: black, purple, red
Hair color: white, light purple, dark grey
Skin color: purple, light grey, dark grey
Horn color: black, light grey, dark grey, light green, white

Hand digits: five (4 fingers, 1 thumb)
Feet digits: six
Other: luminescent skin and horns

Darkglow elves make natural miners and gifted engineers and blacksmiths who rival even the sunfire elves in their craftsmanship. Throughout history, they have often remained neutral in conflicts, rather, they use wars as a source of income.

Darkglow elves are generally hardy and even harder workers, toiling day-and-night to finish major projects. A high degree of individualism exists in this culture as well, more so than most other elven cultures save for the skywing elves, resulting in the first democratic means of governance sprouting from darkglow elf society. Foreigners are often welcome into their kingdoms for a fee and will find markets brimming with goods, large corporations willing to sell high-quality mass-produced equipment to the highest bidder, and darkglow craftsmen working their forges.

Moonshadow Elf; Isiledhel

Luna

Avg. height: 1.71 meters
Avg. height: 63.5 kilograms

Eye color: light purple, blue, silver
Hair color: silver, white, light grey
Skin color: shades of purple-tan
Horn color: black, ivory, purple, blue

Hand digits: four (3 fingers, 1 thumb)
Feet digits: four
Other: patterns along body and horns

Moonshadow elves have a rather rigid society, idolizing duty and oath above all else. In general, the community is valued over the self, resulting in many elven scholars criticizing moonshadow elf society as a whole. Suicide rates amongst moonshadow elves are noticeably higher than other elven societies. This task-oriented societal structure has enabled the moonshadow elves to build vast cities and industrial complexes in the central southern coastal region and forest regions.

Only the darkglow elves rival the moonshadow elves in manufacturing capacity and capability, and moonshadow elves represent the best combination of ingenuity, bravery, and obedience within military organizations. Outside of societal troubles, however, moonshadow elves possess a rich and deep culture that seems to reflect the subtle beauty and glow of the moon itself. Music and dance play a big role within moonshadow elf culture with the two arts being performed at childbirth, weddings, funerals, and general celebrations.

Startouched Elf; Elenedhel

Stars

Avg. height: 1.89 meters
Avg. height: 79.8 kilograms

Eye color: dark blue, dark purple, silver, yellow
Hair color: silver, white, shades of blue
Skin color: shades of blue, shades of yellow, grey, white
Horn color: shades of blue, shades of yellow, black, grey, white

Hand digits: seven (5 fingers, 2 thumb)
Feet digits: four
Other: star-like patterns along body, horns, and hair

Startouched elves are connected to the primal element of the stars. They are naturally gifted magicians and scholars largely thanks to their two horn-like protuberances that act in a similar manner to the frontal and temporal lobes. Compared to other elves, startouched elves can live even longer with an average lifespan of 6,000 years.

Startouched elf culture revolves largely around logical thinking and philosophy. Startouched elves are particularly known for their elentrion where members of society generally gather to discuss and debate. Three of the four major scientific centers of the elven world are located in startouched elf territory. Startouched elf society is lead by a council of thinkers and hard labor is generally exported to other elven races or handled by automated machines which enables the population as a whole to focus on the pursuit of discovery and knowledge. There are two extreme schools of thought within startouched elf culture: the School of Radical Logic (el: Noss en edren caethad) and School of Radical Thinking (el: Noss en edren sanasta).

Sunfire Elf; Anoredhel

Sol

Avg. height: 1.88 meters
Avg. height: 85.8 kilograms

Eye color: shades of brown, yellow, red, orange
Hair color: black, dark brown, red, shades of orange
Skin color: shades of brown, dark orange
Horn color: brown, red, orange, yellow

Hand digits: four (3 fingers, 1 thumb)
Feet digits: three
Other: patterns along body and horns

Sunfire elf culture emphasizes bravery, honor, and purity. They are incredibly arrogant and prideful and for good reason. As some of the finest footsoldiers in the western islands, their skill with the sword is a tradition passed down through the generations. Even the advent of firearms six-hundred years prior could not quell the spirit of the sunfire elf warriors, their gleaming armor invulnerable to the small arms fire and their swords emitting rays of heat that evaporated all enemy combatants on the field. Still, sunfire elves are not invulnerable and their pride can often lead to their downfall.

Although the sunfire elf caste was officially abolished in 1854 C.E., there continues to exist a rift between the upper warrior and priest class and the lower worker class. This has lead to several tensions between the classes and a rise in Govodism within sunfire elf society.

Skywing Elf; Meneledhel

Sky

Avg. height: 1.70 meters
Avg. height: 49.8 kilograms

Eye color: green, stormy grey, light blue
Hair color: white, dark blue, dark purple, light green, black
Skin color: teal, light blue, grey
Horn color: white, light yellow, white, light green

Hand digits: four (3 fingers, 1 thumb)
Feet digits: two (talon-like)
Other: patterns along body and horns, wings

Molded by their ability to fly, skywing elf culture is very open and carefree. Recreational drug use in skywing elf society is significantly higher than other elven societies. Skywing elves have by far the most open and accepting cultures and have historically adopted many new social and technological developments at amazing speeds.

Skywing elves take great pride in their wings and are known to spend hours pruning themselves before major social events. Generally, bigger wings are equivalent to greater social position and beauty. Interestingly, a study found that over a third of online fashion stars are skywing elves.

Earthbound Elf; Cefedhel

Earth

Avg. height: 2.13 meters
Avg. height: 113.1 kilograms

Eye color: shades of green, shades of brown, black
Hair color: shades of brown, black
Skin color: shades of tan, light brown
Horn color: shades of tan, shades of brown

Hand digits: four (3 fingers, 1 thumb)
Feet digits: four
Other: bark-like skin and branch-like horns

Earthbound elf culture is stern and resolute, much like the primal element they have formed a connection with. The society is very conservative with an emphasis on family values and ancient laws and is generally viewed as stubborn and close-minded. They are one of two elven societies to continue the use of a constitutional monarchy system of governance.

Despite their conservative outlook on their culture, they are by far the most hospitable elven society in all the Lotus Islands. They are known to willingly house strangers and frequently host feasts for guests and will generally maintain a friendly attitude unless their values or laws are criticized. Normally, no is dumb enough to rob an earthbound elf either, so the society as a whole is very trusting and generally maintains a low level of security in the streets.

Tidebound Elf; Aearedhel

Ocean

Avg. height: 1.77 meters
Avg. height: 81.2 kilograms

Eye color: aqua blue, ocean blue, white
Hair color: shades of red, shades of blue
Skin color: shades of blue, blue-grey
Horn color: pinkish-red, pink, shades of blue

Hand digits: four (3 fingers, 1 thumb)
Feet digits: three
Other: large retractable fins

Tidebound elven culture naturally revolves around the seas. As many cultural practices occur under the waves alongside an unwillingness to reveal their practices, tidebound elven culture is largely a mystery to outsiders. Very few accounts exist of their ceremonies, religious beliefs and practices, and general way of life under the sea resulting in an air of mystery surrounding the entire species.

One piece of culture that tidebound elves have been willing to share is their musical affinity. Wandering bands composed of tidebound elf can be found across the western Lotus Islands. It is said that some 70% of the tidebound elf live in the great underwater cities near the coastline. Tidebound elves possess some of the finest shipbuilding yards with the largest facilities located in Falass, Maltfalas, and Heledhbarad, and their maritime designs are unrivaled by man or elf.

Snowflurry Elf; Losedhel

Winter

Avg. height: 1.73 meters
Avg. height: 71.5 kilograms

Eye color: white, black, shades of grey, light blue
Hair color: white, light grey, light blue
Skin color: white, light blue
Horn color: black, white, shades of gray, light blue

Hand digits: six (5 fingers, 1 thumb)
Feet digits: three
Other: glittering skin, hair, and horns

Snowflurry elves devote themselves to the Order of Nnim (el: Heren nmin). This order dictates the lives of all snowflurry elves through a neural connection to the central Temple of Nnim where the Lord of the Fain R resides. The source of this neural connection is likely due to a rite of passage snowflurry elves partake in when they reach adolescence. In this ceremony, of-age snowflurry elves drink the sap of the Crystal Tree (el: Silefereg) which leads to a complete personality shift. The slowflurry elves will then return to their normal selves several minutes later, thus completing the ritual.

It has been theorized that this forms a snowflurry elf hivemind, a concept that has been supported in past conflicts with the species. Those in snowflurry elf who do not perform the rite of passage are exiled, forced to either become an Uirebrhw Sage or turn to the rest of human or elven society for survival.

AOGUAI

Aoguai (el: Orq; xn: 澳怪) are a native species to the Lotus Islands renowned for their incredible strength and magical prowess. Like other intelligent species of the Lotus Islands, Aoguai are terrestrial creatures, characterized by their erect posture and bipedal locomotion; high manual dexterity and heavy tool use compared to other native inhabitants; open-ended and complex language use compared to other bardhonan communications; larger, more complex brains than most other native inhabitants; highly advanced and organized societies; and the ability to wield primal magic.

The species known as the modern aoguai has been present on the Lotus Islands for at least 300,000 years. The earliest aoguai skeleton was found in a burial site in the central Lotus Islands alongside large weapons and tools. The divergence of the primal aoguai race into the four subspecies is believed to have gradually occurred from 400,000 B.C.E to 300,000 B.C.E., theorized to be a result of a natural evolution in response to the gradual seeping of primal magic into the environment. A majority of aoguai live in the western Lotus Islands after being driven out of the east by humans some 14,000 years ago. Similar to the other major sentient species of the islands, aoguai use systems of symbolic communication as language and art to express themselves and exchange ideas, and also organize themselves into purposeful groups. Aoguai have long had complex social structures composed of many cooperating and competing groups, from families and kinship networks to political states. Interactions, both social and with the island itself, have established an extremely wide variety of values, social norms, and rituals, which together undergird elven society. Similar to elves, aoguai are motivated by their curiosity of co-existing the world rather than manipulating it which has led to the development of a culture often observed as brutish and uncivilized.
