Asan, or Sasana, is a Bantu language spoken within the Kingdom of Akara. Asan is a member of the Southern Bantu group, and most closely related to the Sotho-Tswana languages. However, hundreds of years of separation, along with influences from Polynesian sources have made Akaran incredibly divergent from the other languages.

It is estimated that there are around 21 million native speakers of Asan, primarily in Akara, but also in the Akaran diaspora. In addition there are also several million people who speak it as a secondary or tertiary language It is the second most spoken language native to Africa, after Swahili. Asan also an official language of the African Union, and used as a lingua franca in parts of Mozambique. Historically, it was also used as a lingua franca in parts of East Africa south of Swahili influence.
