How the President is elected

In 2017, the parliament proposed to change the constitutional article regulating the president's term of office. The text was subjected to a referendum in which it was approved. This text will enter in force from the next presidential elections (December 2018).

Old Article:

The president of Amjedia is the head of state. He is elected by the citizens in direct, democratic and pluralistic elections by an absolute majority of votes cast. If no candidate achieves a majority in the first round, a second round shall be organized maximum three weeks after the announcement of the definitive results of the first round.

The election of the new President shall take place at least twenty days and not more than forty days before the expiry of the powers of the President in-Office.

Only the two candidates having won the highest number of votes during the first round participate in the second round of the elections.

The minimum age to run for president is 25. The maximum age is 60.

The elected president takes the oath in front of the parliament which decides the duration of his term (5 or 7 years). The president can serve for two consecutive terms.
