The Freehold Military, known alternatively and more exhaustively as the Military of the Senate and Freeborn Landholders of Ephyra, is the organised military force operated for and by the Senate and Freeborn Landholders of Ephyra. The office of Archon is automatically imbued with supreme command over all the resources of the Freehold's military, via religious rite of inauguration affirming the right of power and command. Military policy is conducted with the Archon and his Executive Council, in particular the Sphere of War, headed by the Prefect of War, and its subordinate departments including both civilian and military officials. Four distinct branches of the Freehold's military exist; the Freehold Citizen Legion, the Freehold Citizen Navy, the Freehold Citizen Sky Force, and the Freehold Auxiliaries.

Though Ephyra as a political entity has maintained various armed units and groups from citizen militias to standing armies, the institution commonly recognised as the Freehold Military dates back to the founding of the Senate and Freeborn Landholders of Ephyra, and indeed dates back even before the formal proclamation of this state on July 16th, 1626. Formed from the rebel citizen militia organised and led by the most senior of the SFLE's founding fathers, Valaemedes Anogarios Artalos, against an essentially tyrannical and inept oligarchy, the birth of the Freehold Military was with the resurrection of the two historical branches, Ephyra's army and its navy. These two forces comprise the bulk of the prestige and manpower of the military even today, and have been involved in the vast majority of conflicts the SFLE has been participant to. They brought Selia under Ephyra's administration, dominated Anatolia up to the Pontic border, crossed into the Levant and landed in Canaan, secured Egypt and Libya, pushing on west to Tunisia, and bringing the ancient lands of Mesopotamia under Ephyra's ever growing dominion over the last three centuries. Most recently, the now formally known forces of the Freehold Citizen Legion and Freehold Citizen Navy were reorganised in the early 1940s, to wage Ephyra's most brutal and costly war against the Russians and their allies, suffering the loss of millions in the Caucasian Front and the European Front. In this, they were aided by the more recently formed and organised Freehold Citizen Sky Force, and the growing Freehold Auxiliaries.

The SFLE mostly operates a professional force of paid volunteers, although conscription-by-culture can be perceived to exist. Military service is an exalted and glorified duty in the Ephyral psyche, and service is necessary for receiving the rights of suffrage, as well as accruing the particular Ephyral idea of 'social capital' based on one's character and reputation, particularly for matters of honour. Consequently, a large pool of recruits is open for the SFLE to draw from for its citizen forces, whilst the non-citizen auxiliaries operate both volunteer and conscription depending on interior organisation. The SFLE has conscripted by law its citizen population however, but does not do so in peacetime. Only males are eligible for military service, be it a citizen or non-citizen branch, a continued reflection of the masculine virtues of courage, strength, and martial prowess, combined with male social dispensability for the defence of the state and the women and children left behind.

The SFLE is a competent and powerful force, with great defensive capability and a capacity for power projection in its regional area if it decided to do so. Well-funded by all governments since the Second Ephyral Spring in 1940, the reformation of the military under Archon Dictator Lenaleos carried strong connotations of national rebirth and cultural restoration, in no small part due to Lenaleos' other reforms. The military is perceived by its citizens therefore as a core pillar of the Ephyral state, to wage the wars for which the state has casus belli.

Command organisation

Supreme command of the Freehold military falls upon the annually elected archon. Through the religious rite of inauguration, the office-holder is invested with legal power to utilise the military resources of the state in engagements approved by the Senate. As military service is necessary to vote or stand for office, all archons are familiar with the military, and likely held a position of at least minimal command. To support any potential lack of expertise however is the Executive Council's Sphere of War, headed by the Prefect of War, and its subordinate Spheres of the Legion, Sky Force, and Navy, all headed by present civilian officials with military chiefs of staff. These positions, though existing prior to the Second Ephyral Spring, were reorganised along with many other aspects of the military by Archon Dictator Lenaleos. In a westernised fashion, these chiefs of staff of Legion, Sky Force, and Navy form a Joint Chiefs of Staff under a Prefect of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and the Sub-Prefect of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. The Auxiliaries, as a purely terrestrial force, fall under the Sphere of the Legion's domain and do not have an individual representative on the JCS.

By law and practice therefore, the Prefect of the Joint Chiefs of Staff is the highest ranking military officer in the Freehold, this being the reason for the use of a title reserved otherwise for the civilian heads of the cabinet, as the P-JCS and SP-JCS have the capacity and expectation to directly advise the archon alongside the Prefect of War. This westernisation of the military was adopted by Archon Dictator Lenaleos with assistance from Cerman military and civilian officials during the Great War, although retaining a distinctly Ephyral character about the symbolism of the positions.
