Overview of Coinciencia [WIP]

Coincidencia (kəʊ-ɪn-sɪ-dəns-eə) is an island nation in the region Cape of Good Hope. Its closest neighbours are Riko Republic and Altuaria to the west, and Santa Catalina to the north. It has a population of roughly 673 million, of whom nearly a million live in the metropolitan area of the capital and largest city, Solvang.

History
The island was originally founded and inhabited by the nation True Christopia. Their reasons for abandoning the island remain unknown, though geologists have ruled out natural disaster and biologists have yet to discover any sign of predatory species. Upon taking possession of the island, many of the buildings left by the previous nation were re-purposed. Several have been returned to their original states and converted to museums.

Coincidencia’s population was originally comprised of political refugees fleeing a tyrannical regime to the far west of Cape of Good Hope. Upon entering the region, they chose to abandon the mainland and seek out an island existence, wanting physical borders between them and any further tyrannical regimes that might arise.

Population
The nation is comprised mostly of rural farming communities, with three major shipping hubs: Vonore on the northern coast, Solvang on the east coast, and Galena on the south-western coast. Travel between outlying areas and metropolitan cities is limited to the extensive railways that provide transportation of citizens, tourists, and goods. Within cities, the use of motorised vehicles is restricted to emergency services and the transportation of goods; the major for of transportation for individual citizens is the bicycle, with dog sledding a popular alternative in winter months. Legislation outlawing the use of automobiles and the burning of fossil fuels saw a large dip in economic production, but the implementation of extensive railways provide alternative transportation from outlying areas to metropolitan cities.

Notable Legislation
Early in Coincidencia's development, legislation was passed to ban the unregulated burning of fossil fuels. As a secondary effect of this law motorized vehicles fell out of use by private citizens. While this nearly crippled the economy, timely aid from the Bureaucratic Stratocracy of Vernic meant that the nation was able to implement the widespread use of solar and wind power.

Coincidencia also allows the eating of the dead. Although there are very few instances of donation, an estimated 90 deceased citizens are consumed annually. Strict regulations are in place to assure the authenticity of each donation and to ensure that no disease passes from consumed to consumer during the process.

The above practise is known colloquially as 'heavy cannibalism'. The act referred to as 'cannibalism light' is in fact much more widespread, as a vat-grown, genetically human meat product is sold commercially across the nation. Strict labelling laws ensure that products containing human meat are clearly identified, and any restaurants using human ingredients are required to declare so on the menu. It is also illegal to transport genetically human meat across Coincidencia's borders, so as to comply with the cannibalism laws of neighbouring nations.

Culture
Coincidencia boasts a liberal population, known for its dedication to the environment and the arts. Sport is virtually unknown, as became clear during the 2017 Cape of Good Hope Cup, when the Miltank Mohawks failed to make it past the Grouping Stage. Since being introduced to the idea, however, several sports clubs have sprung up so as to satisfy the newfound need for tennis, rock climbing, football and curling.

While not strictly an atheist nation, Coincidencia has no native religion. The closest manifestation is the near-worship of the Miltank, a bovine creature that evolved alongside Coincidencian forebears. Archaeologists believe it unlikely that indigent populations would have survived without the existence of the Miltank, and a fascination with the strange creature persists through the modern day. For the most part, this takes the form of wearing Miltank balaclavas, integrating the Miltank silhouette (whole or partial) into fashion, and partaking in Miltank yoghurts, cheeses, and ice creams.
