Legal Code of Medio Centroamerica, Excerpts

Under the criminal code, most crimes are punished through imprisonment, amputation, lashes, or execution. Executions are carried out through multiple means: the gas chamber, where chlorine gas is used; hanging; firing squad; or beheading.

There are 3 accepted degrees of murder regarded as a crime.

First degree murder - in which a suspect has been proven to have premeditated the murder - is punished through amputation of all limbs at the knees and elbows, 100 lashes, and execution by gas chamber.

Second degree murder - in which the suspect has not premeditated the murder, but intended to kill - is punished by 75 lashes, and execution by gas chamber.

Third degree murder - or manslaughter - is punished by either 50 lashes and 10 years in prison, or execution by gas chamber, depending on the circumstances.

Attempted murder is punished by 75 lashes and 25 years in prison.

Assassination of a government official is punished by 200 lashes over the course of 5 days, blinding, amputation of legs at the knees and arms at the elbows, 5 weeks in solitary confinement, then execution by beheading.

Attempted assassination carries the same punishment.

There are also multiple criminal offences regarding political speech.

First offence for a criticism of the government is 25 lashes.

Second offense is 50 lashes.

Third offence is removal of the tongue, and 100 lashes.

A fourth offence is punished with death by gas chamber.

Taking part in a protest against the government is given the same punishment as above depending on past convictions.

Vandalism is well punished.

Graffiti is punished with 10 lashes, and cleaning of the graffiti.

Damage to property is punished with 10 lashes, and repayment for damages done.

Arson in the first degree - where over 100,000 pesetas in damage is done - is punished with blinding with hot irons and 50 lashes.

Arson in the second degree - where 2000-100,000 pesetas in damage is done - is punished with 25 lashes.

Arson in the third degree - where less than 2000 pesetas in damage is done - is punished with 10 lashes.

Theft is also harshly punished.

Theft of property worth more than 5,000 pesetas is punished with amputation of the dominant arm from the elbow down, repayment of the property, and 50 lashes.

Theft of property worth less than 5,000 pesetas is punished with 25 lashes and repayment for the property.

Car theft is punished with amputation of the right leg, and 50 lashes.

Robbery of a business where more than 5,000 pesetas is taken is punished with amputation of the dominant arm, and 50 lashes.

Robbery of a business where less than 5,000 pesetas is taken is punished with amputation of the dominant arm, and 25 lashes.

Theft of government property worth over 20,000 pesetas is punished with blinding, amputation of the dominant arm, and 50 lashes.

Theft of government property worth less than 20,000 pesetas is punished with 25 lashes, and amputation of the dominant arm.
