Winston Smith

Overview
Winston Ian William Alfred George Smith is a Conservative Unionist & Democratic Party (CUDP) career politician whom currently serves as Vice-President of the United Nations of Earth.
Winston Smith was born in the wealthy central district of Little London, New Jerusalem, Eden, to a wealthy aristocratic family. It is from this background that he was introduced to the UCDNC, and thus the Pan-Democratic bloc. Elected to his seat at the 2270 election, he became a minister in the Faisal Al-Hashim government as Minister for Bureaucracy & Administrative Affairs.
Through hard work and an exceptional ability as a bureaucrat, he became a leading figurehead of the Pan-Democrats, landing him the nomination for Vice-President on Han's ticket.

Youth
Winston Smith was born in 2243 in Little London, a district to the east of New New York, south of Crown Bank and north of New Hong Kong. Born to a wealthy family heavily involved in politics, during and after going to Charlemagne University Neustadt, in Neustadt, he worked in politics for the local Pan-Democratic-aligned party, the CUDP, against Little London rivals the National Labour & Trade Unionist Party (NL-TUP) and Social-Liberal Democratic Party (SLD).
Eventually nominated to stand for the seat of Little London, he defeated Yasmin Kaur of the NL-TUP, taking the seat left vacant by George Thorpesworth in the 2270 election.

Political Career

Having won the seat of Little London, he spent thirty years in the House of Representatives, winning the seat six times before becoming Minister for Bureaucracy and Administrative Affairs.
During this time, he showed a particular ability to operate politically, working behind-the-scenes to ensure the will of the Pan-Democratic leadership was carried out, and managing the establishment world of the inner bureaucracy. For this reason, he was promoted to the Ministry for Bureaucracy and Administrative Affairs, serving in that post for three years before focusing his knack for management on transportation for two years. After this, he went into the Health Ministry.

His work as Health Minister was unremarkable, continuing to focus on the inner bureaucracy of the Pan-Democrats. Along with this, his reforming efforts in the large and inefficient health sector, caused him to be regarded as a major figure in government, and widely respected by prominent politicians on both sides.

Vice-Presidency
After 45 years in government, Winston Smith backed Chang Han's candidacy for president after Al-Hashim's statement against his running for another term. Han in turn selected Smith for vice-president, adding experience to his ticket.
Winston Smith ran against Johannes Steenhuisen's vice-presidential candidate, Georgios Kvaratskhelia, the Representative for Kartvel-town. Whilst Kvaratskhelia, a virtually unknown man, preferred to meet with political elites of the Pan-Social bloc and raise funds with private speeches, Smith campaigned with great blustering speeches at public rallies, increasing his popularity amongst the population, particularly on the north bank.
He was however criticised for not campaigning on the south bank, or proposing any policies of his own.

After the opening of the senate, Smith returned to government bureaucracy, this time at its head. He now carries out the will of the president by carefully managing the Pan-Democrats from behind-the-scenes.
