Closing The Loop

In December of 1994, during the outset of the Winter Flood of '94-'95, an increasingly liberal Swedish government decided to close The Loop underneath Ekerö Municipality, following petitions from environmental organizations and fearful citizens.

While the higher ups in Riksenergi and the Näringsdepartementet attempted to block the proposal, increased parliamentary pressure and public outcry caused them to cede to the demand and on 24 December 1994 work began to close The Loop.

Over eighteen gauss freighters from across Sweden were required to move resources and workers in and out of the installation, and the process ultimately took four days. The final gauss freighter, the SGS Nordanvind, left Stockholm County on 29 December 1994.

There has been no known recorded impact from closing The Loop. However, many people living in Stockholm and Ekerö Municipality have reported sleeping better at night, knowing that the particle accelerator that helped to shape their new world now lies dormant.
