Pulau Kapas Shipyard Limited (PKSY) is located in Selat Beringin on the Western bank of the Bangsawan River. This is the only shipyard located in the southern part of the country, making it a strategically important shipyard for ensuring the operability of ships and craft of various maritime agencies including the [nation]Tongkang Pechah[/nation] Navy and Coast Guard. Presently PKSY is a commercial enterprise managed and operated by the [nation]Tongkang Pechah[/nation] Navy.

PKSY has built a variety of vessels for both local and international owners. They have built more than 60 ships for coastal and inland use in [nation]Tongkang Pechah[/nation], including ferries, tankers, cargo ships, dredgers, pilot boats, tugs, fishing vessels and passenger ships. PKSY Shipyard has recently received OHSAS 18000 certification for health and safety and ISO 14000 certification, in addition to ISO 9001 certification for quality.[hr]

Panamax are the mid-sized cargo ships that are capable of passing through the lock chambers of the Panama Canal which are 1,050 ft (320.04 m) in length, 110 ft (33.53 m) in width, and 41.2 ft (12.56 m) in depth. These limits have influenced the ship building companies to build Panamax vessels strictly in accordance with the dimensions (width, length and depth) of the lock chambers and the height of the Bridge of the Americas.
