DESCRIPTION OF YOUR NATION’S ROLE IN THE WORLD

Etymology

There are two different hypotheses as to the etymology of the name Ukraine. According to the older hypothesis, it literally means "on the border", "near the border", or "around the border". It was first used to define part of the territory of Kyivan Rus' in the 12th century. "U" meaning "within" and "kraij" meaning "border" in the Proto-Slavic language used by Kyivan Rus’. The name has been used in a variety of ways since the twelfth century, and a contemporary parallel for this is the Russian okráina or ‘outskirts’. More recently some linguistic studies claim a different meaning: "homeland" or "region, country", stating that the name is derived from ukraina in the sense of ‘region, principality, country’. Many medieval occurrences of the word can be interpreted as having that meaning. In this sense, the word can be associated with contemporary Ukrainian krajina. According to this view with the meaning of kraj as ‘land parcel, territory’, attested to in many Slavic languages and states of having acquired the meaning ‘a tribe's territory’ from early in Slavic morphology; ukrajand ukrajina would then mean "a separated land parcel, a separate part of a tribe's territory". These scholars claim that the words Okraina and Ukraine always had strictly separate meanings. The newer view of Ukraine as meaning “country” is more popular within Ukraine, and it is the view that is officially accepted by the Ukrainian Royal Government and Ukrainian linguists.
