The Avalonian Defence Force (ADF) consists of four services or Branches: the Navy; the Army; the Air Force; and the Guards, and is commanded by the Marshal of the Realm, always a Lord or Lady of the Realm, and headed by the Commander-in-Chief, that being the King himself.
Avalon's armed forces have four defence policy objectives: 1- to defend Avalon against threats; 2- to contribute to regional security; 3- to play a part in global security efforts; and 4- to control internal threats and territoriality, which means that Avalon Guards, the main law enforcing entity and police force is also a part of the military and helps the Army as land troops in case of invasion.
Avalon considers its own national defence needs to be modest, due to its geographical isolation and benign relationships with neighbours, that's why the ADF is relatively small. With around 50,000 full-time active-duty personnel (roughly half of them being Guards in law-enforcing service), 15,000 active reserves and 5,000 standby reserves, it's probably one of the smallest military in The North Pacific. Nonetheless, the ADF is supported by a significant budget by worldwide standards and is able to deploy forces in multiple locations outside Avalon, especially Air and Naval forces, which are better trained and have sophisticated equipment, in contrast with land troops. Guards have remained a traditional part of the army and still use historical, ceremonial uniforms and swords as their main weapon, while in service.
As of 2024, the main active Avalonian military is divided as follows:
Avalon Navy: ~10,000
Avalon Air Force: ~6,500
Avalon Army: ~8,500
Avalon Guards: ~25,000
