[anchor=Hist][/anchor]History
In July of 1988, a large-scale conflict broke out in the Triberian Peninsula. Two years into the war, Porotia gained independence from a group of surrounding countries. This war was fought between the Porotian partisans in the northern and eastern parts of what is now Porotia, and several countries from the east, including Mats-Zoden, and Temovka. After gaining independence, Porotia made a treaty with the other combatants in the war, which allowed bordering countries to trade, import, and export goods with other countries.

In modern times, Porotia has a slight political tension with Mats-Zoden.

[anchor=Geo][/anchor]Geography
Porotia has some valleys and mountains, which include Arbas Valley, and Mt. Ileto. There are rivers and lakes in central Porotia, like the Pavlic river, which runs through the capital, Telograv, and Lake Gletova, which is the clearest body of water in Porotia.

Most of Porotia's rural and agricultural industries are located in the Ternijevo region in the southwest. Ternijevo has various notable landmarks, such as the infamous Mt. Majevica, known by the residents in the nearby village of Pazodina as "The Hand of God" due to the extraordinarily large number of deaths from the numerous shellings that the surrounding villages received from howitzers and artillery positioned on the mountain during the war. It claims the lives of many mountaineers every winter season, as temperatures near its peak drop below -26°C due to the intensity of winter weather near its peak. Zastalijak is the largest city in Ternijevo.

In the north-eastern part of the country is the Kraskevac region, which includes the Porotian-Zodenian border. Very little wildlife live in the area, and the soil is infertile and dry. Ruins of destroyed tanks and crashed military aircraft, along with small villages, can often be found in areas closer to the border. Kraskevac is home to the Scorched Pines Weapons Testing Center (SPWTC), used for both conventional and nuclear tests. Ghost towns, either evacuated in order to incorporate the land into the Scorched Pines ordnance range, or ravaged by war, dot the graveyard of what was formerly a large temperate forest region.

Tens of thousands of tourists visit the uniquely designed brutalist-style war memorials scattered throughout the countryside every year.

[anchor=Demo][/anchor]Demographics
Most of the population is made up of Porotians, with a small amount of Zodenians and ethnic Matsin peoples. Contrary to the shaky diplomatic relationship between the two countries, the Porotians, Zodenians, and Matsin have no significant level of inter-ethnic rivalry.

The lifespan of the average Porotian is 91.71 years, with the most common causes of death being old age and resulting from getting lost in the wild.

Approximately 20.74% of the Porotian population consists of cyborgs, including citizens with prosthetic bodies and cyberized brains.

[anchor=Gov][/anchor]Government
Porotia has many policies, which include the acceptance of artificial people and cyborgs. Porotia is autocratic and does not hold national elections.

Large cities have districts with security sectors that specialize in public security, which usually consist of cyborgs. These security sectors are partially the responsibility of the Porotian Cybercrime Investigation Division (CID). Section 7 of the CID, also referred to as "CIDSec-7", is heavily confidential. CIDSec-7's operational activity is practically unknown to the general public, which mostly believes that Section 7 is just a myth or rumor or a sort of bogeyman birthed from urban folklore. Most of the information on CIDSec-7 is classified to the point that many of those in the top brass of the Porotian government and military have very little knowledge of the division's activity, some not even knowing of its existence. CIDSec-7 has conducted international missions, such as assassinations of foreign diplomats and politicians.

Project OVERHAUL

On May 7th, 2020, the Porotian government began Project OVERHAUL, which would restructure itself into a military government. One of the primary objectives of Project OVERHAUL are to replace non-military Porotian politicians with ones that are part of the military or were veterans, as well as to militarize the nation's police force and retrofit law enforcement with better equipment. It also prioritizes redirecting government funding to put more priority on national defense programs and the military. Other focuses of Project OVERHAUL are to detain political terrorists, crack down on drug crimes, eliminate internal corruption, and to shut down any Temovkan sleeper agent programs in the nation.

Not long after the commencement of Project OVERHAUL, drug crimes in Porotia greatly reduced.

On March 10th, 2021, Porotian Internal Security agents initiated a major investigation into the nation's government workers and military personnel. Several military officers and government workers were tried and imprisoned for corruption and war crimes. Six government workers were sentenced to death by firing squad, and twenty more were given 3 life sentences with hard labor. Eleven military officers were also sentenced to 15 years of hard labor.

As of September 2nd, 2024, Project OVERHAUL is still in progress.

[anchor=Mil][/anchor]Military
There are 3,282,903,801 active & reserve military personnel (approx. 42.3% of the population) currently serving in the National Military of Porotia.

Porotia enforces and supports the last-resort option of using WMDs to protect its citizens. The Porotian people openly support their military, and many have family members with military careers. Many veterans who fought for the independence of Porotia are scarred by the trauma of their past.

Nuclear Weapons Testing

Nuclear tests are conducted at Scorched Pines Weapons Testing Center in Kraskevac, under the jurisdiction of the Department of Nuclear Weapons Research. The test site is located 15 kilometres away from any residential areas[sup][1.][/sup] (including villages, urban & suburban areas, metropolitan areas, conurbations, and satellite cities), military complexes, agricultural areas (such as farms and livestock fields), and bodies of water (reservoirs, lakes, and ponds), as a safety measure to limit the size of the area that could potentially be contaminated by nuclear fallout. Nuclear weapons are detonated either underground or via airburst when tested to prevent as much nuclear contamination in the atmosphere as possible.

Immediately following detonation in nuclear tests, specially trained members from the Land Survey and Analysis Group (LSAG), equipped with full CBRN protection, drive directly towards the hypocenter of the blast. Unless part of a test, the LSAG personnel will drive directly towards the hypocenter in lead-shielded armored vehicles, which have been outfitted with Geiger counters and other data-recording equipment. LSAG personnel receive some of the most valuable healthcare as a benefit of being employed to such a high-risk job.

Usage of Nuclear Weapons in Combat

NACOM has confirmed that the Porotian military has previously used and still currently uses tactical low-yield nuclear weapons in certain situations during conflicts. In circumstances where the target is in an elevated area such as a mountain or plateau, the warhead is detonated via airburst as to not contaminate the air with as much radioactive particles as well as to not cause falling debris and/or landslide. If the target is on a flat surface such as a field or a slightly hilled region, a surface detonation is usually opted for in order to maximize the lethality and destruction of the enemy.

The most common low-yield tactical warhead in use in combat by the Porotian military is the 5-ton HVX-2 warhead.

[anchor=Eco][/anchor]Economy
Porotia's economy maintains a reasonable level of income, with the average Porotian earning 134,134 Poroes per year. The Porotian Weapons, Information Tech, and Book Publishing industries are one of the biggest factors in the growth of the Porotian economy. The level of influence that the black market has on the Porotian economy has become practically nonexistent as a result of reforms and a large but well-regulated law enforcement agencies.

The Porotian government subsidizes 16.2% of the nation's industry.

[anchor=Notes][/anchor]Footnotes
[sup][1.][/sup] Settlements with populations larger than 20 people are considered residential areas.

[anchor=Hab][/anchor]Habitat
The Porotian spikeball does not necessarily have one specific natural habitat, and the species can even be found surviving or even thriving in opposing extreme environments ranging from -32°C to 90°C (-25.6°F to 195°F). They have preference for environments with abundant vegetation and moderate soil coverage, where it can find food and shelter, such as pine forests, temperate plains, and coastal plains with climates ranging from 10°C to 38°C (50°F to 100.4°F).[sup][1][/sup]

If no food is available, it will either move to a new location, or, if the environment proves too much of a risk to travel or forage for food, the spikeball will burrow and enter a full body shut-down until the environment reaches characteristics safe enough to survive in regularly. It can live like this indefinitely, prolonging its lifespan by decades, centuries, or longer if left undisturbed.[sup][2][/sup]

[anchor=Anat][/anchor]Anatomy
The exterior of the Porotian spikeball is covered with a hard and chitinous skin, similar in make to that of crabs and lobsters, except much thicker and stronger. In addition, its body is laden with sharp, rigid spikes ranging in length from 15 to 25 centimeters. These spikes act as a defense mechanism and sensory apparatus. The overall size of it ranges from 30 to 45 centimeters in diameter. The spikeball has control over individual spikes for more complex manipulation of its surroundings.[sup][3][/sup]

As a result of convergent evoluton, the Porotian spikeball has evolved an appearance almost identical to a sea urchin, despite the most recent common ancestor between the two animals existing almost 670 million years ago.[sup][4][/sup]

The Porotian spikeball possesses an muscular internal organ unique to its kind, known as the caragula. The caragula located centrally within the core of the creature, and is a specialized structure that enables it to roll by twisting and contracting in a manner similar to a torsion mechanism.[sup][5][/sup] This movement allows the Porotian spikeball to navigate its environment with agility and speed. Because of this, it is capable of swimming, which functions similar to the paddle wheels of a steamboat.

They are capable of smelling, breathing, and drinking directly through their skin. Spikeballs are also capable of using the caragula as a centrifuge to separate salt from salt water, turning seawater into a form safe to consume.

Spikeballs do not have optical organs such as eyes, but do respond to visual stimuli and light by utilizing photoreceptor cells that circumference their bodies both vertically and horizontally, similar to a grid system. Unlike their visually similar aquatic doppelgängers, spikeballs have a nervous system and utilize it to better respond to such stimuli.

[anchor=Diet][/anchor]Diet

Omnivorous in diet, the Porotian spikeball consumes a variety of food sources, including small insects, fruits, nuts, vegetables and decomposing plant material. Its spiked exterior assists in foraging by digging through soil and leaf litter.[sup][6][/sup]

They may sometimes fully submerge in bodies of water in order themselves to drink and hydrate themselves.

The Porotian spikeball reproduces sexually. Mating occurs during the fall season, during which males and females exchange gametes. Females lay fertilized eggs in shallow burrows, where both parents provide protection until the eggs hatch.[sup][6][/sup]

Porotian spikeball reproduction is known to be unaffected if kept in captivity.

[anchor=Bio][/anchor]Biomechanics and robotics

The unique rolling mechanism of the caragula has garnered interest in fields such as biomechanics and robotics. Its efficient movement and defensive adaptations provide insights into potential applications for engineering and design.

Rico Strackonov
Rico M. Strackonov (born October 4, 1995) is a Porotian military officer and diplomat, currently serving as the 3rd National Foreign Relations Officer (NFRO) since 2020.

[pre]Early Life
Rico Mitchell Strackonov was born on October 4, 1995, in the city of Kashimavac, Porotia, to Erina and Rian Strackonov, Jewish asylum seekers fleeing newly-formed [nation=noflag]Temovka[/nation] due to the rise of a corrupt corporate-run government. His mother worked as a schoolteacher, while his father was formerly a member of the Triberian army before the Triberian Wars.

Military Career
Strackonov was conscripted for military service on January 18th, 2014. Entering the Porotian National Army, Strackonov is known to have excelled at being in leadership positions during training exercises, and was recommended by an executive officer to enter officer training courses. After officer school, Strackonov was transferred to the 2nd Battalion of the 2nd Mechanized Infantry Regiment. Over the span of 4 years, Strackonov managed to get multiple promotions and achieve the rank of major.

During the Zodenian Anti-Terror Campaign, Strackonov was field-promoted to Lieutenant Colonel after his superior was killed by sniper fire near Zelkovo while getting out of a command transport vehicle. Strackonov would proceed to lead 2nd Battalion in fighting until the war.

For his immediate action and commanding of 2nd Battalion, Strackonov was awarded the Valorous Combat Commendation, the second highest military decoration in the Porotian military.

Foreign Relations
Strackonov was appointed National Foreign Relations Officer by the Telograv Military Judicial Council on January 25th 2020, and is the incumbent NFRO. A military hardliner, Strackonov is notorious for putting the Porotian military before the military support of foreign countries.

[anchor=Hist]History[/anchor]
During the Triberian Wars, the Porotian civilian population in the peninsula had taken major losses due to ethnic cleansing and genocide by the Temovkan military. In 1988, the residents of the towns of Hauneijbu[sup][1][/sup] and Vakalenach[sup][2][/sup] were almost all massacred by Temovkan forces. In 1989, the Porotian forces at the time planned to make a retaliatory offensive to drive the Temovkans from the Ternijevan Basin.

A garrison of 2,600 Porotian soldiers[sup][3][/sup] were sent, and thus began the Battle of Anctania. The offensive was successful, but with great losses, but would result in the complete retreat of Temovkan forces within what are now Porotia's borders. Today, this is known today as the Ternijevo Offensive.

In October 1992, the first President of Porotia, Andrius Kravimann, established Valor day as the national day of Porotia. His opening speech referenced the garrison of 2,600 who were the first to fight in the Ternijevo Offensive. He referenced the exhortation given to the 2,600 by Radijvan Doran, a battle-hardened Porotian military commander, who later retired from the army and became the police chief of Zastalijak. 8 months before the establishment of Valor Day, in January 1992, Doran was shot and killed by Temovkan assassins outside his home in Zastalijak, his funeral attended by more than 200,000 people.

[anchor=Cel]Celebrations[/anchor]
One of the most common ways that Porotians celebrate Valor Day is watching the Porotian National Military parade in Telograv, either in person or on television. Karaska[sup][4][/sup] and alcoholic beverages are usually gifted to friends and neighbors.

Every Valor Day, a baseball game is held in Sasineija at Korlan Stadium. The first pitch of the game is typically reserved for the Porotian president or a guest of honor.

[anchor=Note]Notes[/anchor]
[anchor=n1]1.[/anchor] In 2024, Hauneijbu has a population of 6,213. In 1987, the population was approximately 65,000, and in 1991, it was 1,831.
[anchor=n2]2.[/anchor] In 2024, Vakalenach has a population of 88,114. In 1987, the population was 31,862.
[anchor=n3]3.[/anchor] These soldiers are today referred to as "the twenty-six hundred." Countless movies have been made about them
[anchor=n4]4.[/anchor] Karaska is a brick-shaped breaded pastry made with détrempe dough and caramelized sugar, which usually surrounds a single knockwurst, but this can be other types of sausage.
