The Kanzlian Navy
The Kanzlian Navy (Staatsmarine) is the maritime service branch of the Kanzlian Armed Forces. It was founded on 8 January 1518, making it one of the oldest naval force in the world.
After independence from the Empire of the North, the Kanzlian Navy solely focused on commerce duties. This includes escorting commercial ships, plundering foreign territories, and defending economic outposts. It notably was the main force which defeated the Kingdom of Sybersyn during the Kaltan Intervention from 1816 to 1820. It's most famous battle occuring in the Battle of Cape Azouin saw a small force led by Michiel de Wijter defeat the main armada of Sybersyn.
After the monarchy relinquished much of its powers the Kanzlian Navy subsequently saw a period of decline which saw her status as a major naval force reduced to a secondary naval power. During the early 20th century Kanzlia abandoned much of its economic outposts and her navy was further reduced to a coastal defence force. It was Jean Wiel's naval reforms which completely reformed the navy's capabilities. It was his reforms which fully transformed the Kanzlian navy into a purely defensive navy. A period of rearmament brought Kanzlia to the forefront of naval engineering and whilst having her own dreadnought battleships, actually spent more time building dreadnoughts for other countries. Post Kanzlian Collapse, the navy gradually suffered budget cuts until a major change by President Hretsk saw the navy suffer its largest budget cut in its history.
The subsequent civil war over the budget cut saw the Navy take center stage role in defeating the rebelling Kanzlian Army. It is the Navy's direct opposition to the Army which saw the Navy being hailed as the greatest "Kanzlian invention" of all time. Today the Navy is viewed very positively by Kanzlians and remains to be the most technologically advanced component of the Kanzlian Armed Forces.
The Kanzlian Navy uses the prefix KNS which stands for "Kanzlian Navy Ship"
Renown-Class
Coastal Defence Ship
KNS Renown | 1949 |
KNS Repulse | 1957 |
Launched in the late 1940s and late 1950s, the Renown-class coastal defence ships remain to be the world's last operational dreadnoughts. Her main armaments include the 3x2 15-inch guns made by Kalta Steel, whilst her secondaries consist of 2x2 Automatic Dual Purpose 4.7-inch guns made by Hollowpoint. Meanwhile, 4 Goalkeeper CIWS acts as the ship's main Anti-Air.
The Renown class was originally conceived as a battleship, designed to replace aging dreadnoughts of her time. However in the 1960s after a reevaluation of naval strategy, the Renown class was reclassified as coastal defence ships. As a result, she lost her ability to travel long distances.
The most recent upgrade for the Renown-class came in 2001 when both ships were outfitted with Centraal APAR Radar and Centraal SMART-L. Today the Renown Class is still on active duty albeit plays a limited role in the Kanzlian navy. They now act as training ships.
Resolute-Class
Destroyer
KNS Resolute | 1982 |
KNS Respite | 1984 |
KNS Relentless | 1985 |
KNS Revive | 1985 |
Italics indicates ships no longer in active service
Launched in the late 1980s, the Resolute class of destroyers replaced the Admiral-class destroyers. It was part of the larger fleet rearmament program of the 1980s with 12 ships ordered. However, due to the White Paper crisis of 1984, the Kanzlian Navy had to auction off 8 ships to foreign navies. Thus the Resolute class only consists of 4 destroyers.
The Resolute class suffered major defects on her engine and an emergency refitting had to take place in 1992 leaving Kanzlia with no destroyers during that time. It was at this point that the Kanzlian Navy began preparing for their replacement despite less than 10 years of service.
KNS Revive was scuttled after she ran aground to a coral reef in Cape Azouin whilst on her way to Kotr after being struck by a sea mine.
Illustrious-Class
Destroyer
KNS Illustrious | 2005 |
KNS Inexorable | 2005 |
KNS Indomitable | 2006 |
KNS Irrevocable | 2006 |
KNS Immortal | 2007 |
KNS Implacable | 2007 |
Launched in the late 1990s and the early 2000s, the Illustrious class was designed to replace the Resolute class. It notably provided greater radar cover and greater offensive capabilities than her predecessors. However, its most notable distinction was its anti-air capabilities which tripled in amount from the Resolute class. This sparked a brief government crisis of whether a conflict of interest was at play as Hollowpoint received the massive 2 billion Gelder contract to build the anti-air armament. However, it was later proven to be untrue.
The KNS Immortal survived nearly an hour's worth of constant attack by Querterian forces and she remained unscathed throughout.
City-Class
Frigate
KNS Tergtheim | 1982 |
KNS Northernborough | 1984 |
KNS Port Montgomery | 1986 |
KNS Kotr | 1989 |
The City-class was designed to replace the (then) 50 years old Province-Class frigates. It was the first class to be equipped with Hollowpoints automatic dual-purpose 4.7-inch guns. The guns' success was largely thanks to the City-class action during the Kanzlian Civil War which cemented the gun as a mainstay in the Kanzlian Navy.
The City-class was funded by cities as part of the Navy's efforts to reduce costs. The name of the ship corresponds with which city funded the ship. Kotr notably raised so much money that nearly half of it had to be returned.
All 4 ships served during the Kanzlian Civil War where their guns proved crucial in bombarding army positions in the Lievant province. KNS Kotr at one point had to replace her guns three times within 5 days due to constant use quickly expending the barrel's life.
Kraken-Class
Frigate
KNS Kraken | 1995 |
KNS Leviathan* | 1995 |
KNS Charybdis* | 1995 |
KNS Zaratan | 1997 |
KNS Serpent | 1998 |
KNS Selma | 1998 |
KNS Scylla | 1999 |
KNS Lotan | 1999 |
* = Transferred to Brasienburg
The Kraken class was designed to improve the navy's anti-air capabilities, something the City-class fell short of. It was designed by the same committee which designed the Illustrious-class. It was the first class to use Centraal's SMART-L and APAR radar systems.
KNS Zaratan was initially supposed to be the first of the class but a terrorist attack damaged her rudder whilst being fitted out resulting in a 2 year delay.
KNS Leviathan and KNS Charybdis was transferred to the Brasienburg Navy as part of the Kanzlian-Brasienburg Arms Deal.
Swordfish-Class
Corvette
KNS Swordfish | 2001 |
KNS Spearfish | 2002 |
KNS Barracuda | 2003 |
KNS Marlin | 2003 |
KNS Pollock | 2003 |
KNS Tuna | 2003 |
KNS Sardine | 2003 |
KNS Salmon | 2003 |
KNS Gar | 2009 |
The Swordfish class was meant to supplement the Kanzlian Coast Guard. The Coast Guards notably could not possess any vessel heavier than 2,000 tons full load. The Swordfish class is notably very quick being able to reach speeds of 37 knots, however they are relatively lightly armed. It's the only class to not have the Goalkeeper CIWS, this is due to the immense weight each unit carries.
Most of the Swordfish class was completed in 2003 but an extra order was made in 2005 for KNS Gar. The KNS Gar differs from the rest as she is fitted with experimental hydrofoil equipment. With this, the KNS Gar recorded a top speed of 48 knots, although broke the equipment afterward. After a reevaluation, the Navy abandoned the hydrofoil project and the KNS Gar was refitted into an ordinary Swordfish-class corvette.
Indefatigable-Class
Monitor
KNS Indefatigable | 2009 |
KNS Fearnought | 2009 |
Launched in 2009, the Indefatigable class is a heavily armed warship that stemmed from a naval reevaluation that determined that Kanzlia lacked shore bombardment capabilities. As a result, the large Indefatigable class was designed with the primary focus to provide as much heavy gunfire as possible. It is the largest vessel of the Kanzlian Navy (besides the Renown-class)
The Indefatigable class was used to deadly effect during the Kanzlian Civil War where areas of forests were razed and flattened to the ground thanks to their 6x2 5.9 inch guns.
Armageddon-Class
Submarine
KNS Peace | 2001 |
KNS Hope | 2002 |
KNS Cooperation | 2003 |
KNS Unity | 2003 |
KNS Freedom | 2003 |
KNS Foresight* | ? |
* unofficial sightings of a 6th Armageddon-class
The Armageddon class is the first nuclear-powered vessels of the Kanzlian Navy. The Armageddon class was first proposed in the 1960s but only received approval in the early 1990s. The Armageddon class notably does not arm themselves with nuclear weapons as Kanzlia does not possess a nuclear arsenal. It is speculated they are armed with other means of weapons of mass destruction such as biological or chemical weapons.
There is some evidence to suggest that the Kanzlian Navy possesses a 6th submarine as some government documents list 6 Armageddon class submarines although only 5 had been publicised. The mysterious 6th submarine is rumoured to be part of Kanzlia's retaliation strike strategy and is constantly submerged and on patrol around the world, a patrol the media dubbed as the eternal patrol. It is however more likely that the 6th submarine regularly takes turns with other submarines to conduct the eternal patrol. The name of the 6th submarine is still unconfirmed and the name KNS Foresight is another media invention and has since been the popular term to refer to the 6th submarine.
About the drawings of the ship classes, I did not make 100% of them. I, to use the proper term, kitbashed a whole lotta other fantastic artists' work from shipbucket.com to make these drawings.
