Garden Insight
by Giovanniland

Welcome to the Garden Insight for the months of April and May! Here you can read about all interesting happenings in the Gardens that took place in the last two months, all in a few paragraphs.

The major happening in the earlier part of the month was, of course, the Gardens' Fourth Anniversary on April 7th! The day featured several changes, most notably the introduction of a new roster for legendary giveaways with boosts for Gardeners that contribute to our community's activity, the creation of the form linked above for easier Gazette participation, and the repurposing of the Garden Displays channel for weekly collection challenges to be hosted there, where I give a theme and Gardeners then submit collections with up to 100 cards about the theme! The 45th edition of our newspaper was published on the same day, featuring several interesting articles such as the fourth article about Gazette history, and both the Community Contribution Awards and Gardener of the Year trophies of course. This time different Gardeners won each prize, with Mikeswill being the best contributor of cards, Zhensheng Xue chatting the most in the server's meaningful conversations, Dr Hooves joining the most contests in the last 6 months, and finally Fauzjhia being chosen by popular vote as the Gardener of the Year once more!

However, a time of uncertainty started for the entire cards community a week later, when NationStates suddenly crashed on April 14th and the outage lasted for nine days. It was revealed by the admins that a catastrophic hardware failure caused it, and to make things worse initially, the affected disk contained cards data from the last 11 months before the crash that was not available anywhere else, since the last backup was made in May 2023. For the Gardens, this caused a temporary halt for giveaways and the newly-announced weekly collection challenges, as well as no Gazette edition for May, while the 4th Gardening Contest was able to proceed since it did not depend on NS and even got a deadline extension. Many people pondered taking a break or even leaving, especially those who joined the community after the last backup and would lose their entire progress, leading to the proposal of some compensation ideas such as boosted rates for packs or specific cards within them, like legendary and CTE nations.

Luckily, after the game came back the admins started putting an immense amount of effort to recover the cards data, and reported promising results. Cards returned in read-only mode on May 7th, and after some duplication issues that were resolved, testing was quickly done and the market fully returned on the night of May 10th! This allowed events such as the first Weekly Collection Challenge to proceed, which had the theme of Nature and happened on the week before the crash, but given that the game crashed during Sunday night just before the deadline ended, judging only happened during May. "Seasons Come, Seasons Go, Memories of Nature's Show" by Apexiala and "Spirit of the Forest" by Shyshaeian Nation were the entries of the inaugural edition—Apexiala won and was gifted the Season 1 PurDunamis legendary card, while Shyshaeia got Season 3 His Excellency as a participation prize.

Since the trading cards returned, further Weekly Collection Challenges have been at full steam! The Colors and Culture challenges have happened and finished by the time of this Gazette's publishing, while the Humanity challenge is ongoing. You can see the two completed events' results and other data in the following table, and given the success of the first few challenges so far (especially the Color one), I encourage other Gardeners to join in! It's an opportunity to potentially win nice cards and get interested in the world of collection making.

Beyond the events, notable activity in the Gardens also happened in these past two months. Some Card Questions of the Week were asked by me, although they reduced in frequency during the absence of cards, which I plan to fix now that things are back to normal. Firstly, in celebration of our 4th anniversary, I inquired Gardeners about what did they think will happen in the Gardens and the cards community overall between that day and a year from then (and to think we were days away from a near-catastrophe). Upcoming questions inevitably drew from the outage, such as what were Gardeners doing while cards were unavailable, and what card has been their best pull since returning to farming. Most recently, I've asked them about which players in the cards community they're thankful for in recent times and why, which brought many great answers.

Furthermore, there were also other topics in the Greenhouse throughout the month, including a future event that I'm planning called CardVision, where players have to submit card-themed parodies of real life songs and then compete in the same format as EuroVision. Although it was initially scheduled for May, due to the NS downtime it has been moved to July, so stay tuned! Last but not least, I will finish this edition of the Garden Insight as usual, by mentioning our latest arrivals. Since the last Gazette's publishing nine people have joined—welcome Drew Durrnil, Von Zeischter, Cy Avon, Zalora-Bravo, 7 Trees, Namwenia, Draigdyrn, Tyrannical Porcupines United and Libertia-Columbia, thank you all for joining and may your card harvests give great fruits from now on.

Monthly Contest Update
by Giovanniland

It is a tradition in the Society to have monthly contests, one of our main activities. The two last months saw the 4th Gardening Contest happening, which was announced in April but got extended to May, and asked Gardeners to submit either a photo or a drawing authored by them, that depicted a plant or garden. Five people participated, a decrease in comparison to the previous iteration, but still a decent turnout. You can see their entries below!

The entries by Zhensheng Xue and Ballotonia respectively.

The entries by Mikeswill, Dr Hooves and Indusse respectively.

The Contest Judges carefully ranked the entries after the extended deadline ended, with Giovanniland and Ioavollr casting their votes while Indusse was ineligible to vote because they joined the contest. It was decided that a ranking system that awarded points to each candidate according to their rank would be used, so having less points was better in this case. Furthermore, the two best ranked entries have each been awarded one Season 3 Legendary card!

1. Zhensheng Xue (4 points) - wins Czechostan
2. Ballotonia (5 points) - wins Giovenith
3. Dr Hooves (6 points)
4. Indusse (7 points)
5. Mikeswill (8 points)

I'm also announcing the next monthly contest in this Gazette edition, the second edition of the Pride Month Card Bracket! You can participate by choosing one Pride-themed card that you own either in your main nation or a puppet, different from your entry last year, and then send the link to me until 23:59 UTC of June 17th. After that, the cards will compete through popular vote, the number of rounds of course depending on how many submissions there are, and the top three will earn a Legendary card. Choose your cards wisely, and have fun!

Winners of the Month
by Giovanniland

Due to the aforementioned downtime, this Gazette's Winners of the Month article will consider both the April and May giveaways. Early in the former month there was the Gardens' 4th Anniversary celebration, so I decided to do a special giveaway and gift four legendaries to celebrate four years—Avaerilon, Despoticania, The Holy Principality of Saint Mark and Laudesia! Eighteen cards were gifted throughout these two months, with Mike and Fotisdia winning two giveaways each whereas the other fourteen wins all went to separate Gardeners. Furthermore, the legendary giveaways of this period were the first to use the new roster, which gives some bonuses for the Gardeners that contribute to our community's activity.

In this section I also want to show my appreciation for Leto II Atreides due to them gifting 75 legendaries and over 200 epics to EpLeHo, our card storage for giveaways! Leto's extremely generous action has certainly replenished the storage, which was previously reaching low levels, and I hope that it inspires other people to contribute their own cards to keep the Gardens running. The cards Leto gifted include a decent amount of Season 2 and Season 3 legendaries, alongside several valuable epics, giving more diversity to the upcoming giveaways.

The second table meanwhile lists giveaways by fellow Gardeners during the last two months. Fauzjhia and Kakastania continued their giveaways, while Fotisdia joined during 23rd May and then gifted cards until the end of the month since that date was their birthday! Twenty-seven cards were gifted by the three combined, and there are lucky people like Ioavollr and Mikeswill who won three cards each, while four other Gardeners received two each, and finally the thirteen other cards went to thirteen different people.
