The year was 2008 in the city of New Hakashi, soon to be known as the City of Fashion. Bustling crowds roamed over the sidewalks and dozens of cars lined the roads of the busy metropolis. And in the middle of all that commotion stood a 15-year-old boy known as Yuri Tohime standing in the middle of the sidewalk. Wearing a white shirt with a dark blue jacket over it and an orange beanie, he held his guitar firmly in his hands, as he stood in front of the microphone. He was about to start his performance.
Just then, he began to play his guitar. The sounds coming from the guitar were pleasant enough for human ears, as people began to take interest in Yuri’s music, staring at him. Yuri gulped in fear. This was the part where he had to sing, and unfortunately for him, he knew he was a terrible singer. A single drop of sweat slid down his face as he began to sing.
Yuri: AAAAEEAAAAEEAAAIIIIAAAAAAHHHH!!!
People whinced in pain at the sound of Yuri’s screeching voice, and they couldn’t stand it. As Yuri sang, a bald man wearing a white suit crushed the can he had in his hand, and he through the can at Yuri, aiming straight for hits head.
Yuri: OWW!!
A direct hit. Yuri fell to the floor, dazed. He couldn’t believe it. He blew his moment. With his horrible singing voice, he’ll never be able to ever become a big star.
He thought about a concert he had attended years ago with his father. The audience had been raving with excitement that day. The band that had played in that concert sounded amazing, and on that day, Yuri had wanted to become just like that. But he knew that was impossible. He realized it was nothing more than an unreachable dream. A single tear streamed down his face.
Man #1: Boo! You suck
Woman #1: Get out of here! No one wants to hear your awful music again!
The people around him continued booing at him, as he got on his feet, knocked down the microphone stand, and walked the other way, taking his guitar with him.
He walked down the streets of New Hakashi with his head down, still thinking about how awful he was as a singer. Suddenly, something inside a little store called Yamaha called his attention: A strange yet beautiful robotic girl standing right behind a glass window. A sign next to the door stated “SALE!”, signaling that the robot girl was for sale, of course. And the robot could even sing. Yuri tilted his head curiously.
Yuri: Huh? W-what?!
Yuri immediately ran to the front of the window and checked the robot Yuri realized that this robot just might be his ticket to stardom. Just then, to Yuri’s surprise, the girl opens her eyes, sending Yuri into shock.
Yuri: WHAT THE-
Yuri jumps back and falls down on the floor, as he struggled to get back up. The girl stared at Yuri curiously, then tilted her head and smiled.
As Yuri got back up on his butt, he noticed the girl’s smile, and couldn’t help but blush in embarrassment. He tried to hide his blush, but was having a hard time in doing so.
Hatsune Miku: Well, hello there! My name is Hatsune Miku!
Yuri’s eyes widened in shock.
Yuri: WHAT?! A-ARE YOU TALKING TO ME?!
Hatsune Miku: Mhm! That’s right!
The girl continued to smile as Yuri remained speechless. He then comes back to his senses and immediately checks his wallet, only to find that it was empty.
Yuri: AW, COME ON!! NOOO!!
Yuri gets back up on his feet and begins to look left and right, checking for any potential witnesses. Once he was sure the coast was clear, he clenches his fists, a look of determination on his face. He grabs his guitar and smashes the window between them. In doing so, he immediately grabs Miku’s hand and drags her along in a panic.
Store Manager: SHOPLIFTER!! WE HAVE A SHOPLIFTER!!
Yuri continues to drag Miku along as she begins to speak up.
Hatsune Miku: Huh? Where are you taking me?
Yuri didn’t respond. He continued to dash along the streets of the city, a panicked look on his face, trying not to crash into any civilians. Suddenly, to Yuri’s surprise, he trips over that same can he had been hit with earlier, causing him to fall over. Miku stares at Yuri curiously, then begins to giggle gently.
Hatsune Miku: Hey… Are you ok?
Yuri: O-ow… Yeah.. I think so…
Miku smiles and stretches out her hand out in front of Yuri. He stares at her hand with a look of surprise, but gladly grabs onto it, as Miku lifts him back up on his feet.
Hatsune Miku: Maybe try to be more careful next time, you know?
Yuri chuckles.
Yuri: Yeah, you’re right.
It wasn’t long before they had hit it off as friends. They continued walking along the streets of the city, talking for hours on end. To Yuri’s misfortune, however, the police had arrived right in front of the two. Mr. Hamilton, the police chief, who had been accompanied by one of his men, held a cigarette in one hand, and pulled out a police badge in the other. Yuri realized that this was it. It was time to turn himself in.
Mr. Hamilton: End of the line, kid.
Yuri: Oh… This is it, then…
Yuri held his hands up in front of Mr. Hamilton, awaiting to be cuffed and arrested. Mr. Hamilton pulls out a pair of cuffs, and prepares to put them on Yuri. Just then, before the police could react, Miku grabs ahold of Yuri’s hand and makes a run for it, dragging Yuri along with her. Mr. Hamilton and the others were left in shock as the other cops begin to give chase.
Mr. Hamilton: HEY! YOU! GET BACK HE- D’OH!
Mr. Hamilton gets a cramp on his back before he could finish his sentence, as Yuri and Miku continued to run away from the law.
Yuri: MIKU!! WHAT ARE YOU DOING?!
As they ran, Miku looked back at Yuri with a big smile on her face, giggling in the process.
Hatsune Miku: Come on! We can make it! I know we can!
Yuri stared ad Miku’s beaming face, and couldn’t help but grin himself. But suddenly, Yuri strains his right foot, as he yelps out in pain and falls to the ground. Miku yells out to Yuri, a concerned look on her face.
Hatsune Miku: Yuri-san!! Are you ok?!
Yuri chuckles weakly.
Yuri: Heh heh… It’s no use… I strained my foot…
Just then, Yuri remembers his dream of becoming a star. He realized this could really be his big moment. He pulls out his guitar, and begins to play it, as he tried to sing with his screeching voice. The people around them covered their ears in pain, not wanting to hear his voice anymore.
Man #2: No! Stop it! Just shut your mouth already!
Woman #2: Yeah, come on! No one wants t9 hear your voice around here anymore!
Miku observed Yuri’s desperate attempt to try and sing, and gets at what Yuri is attempting, as a small smile forms on her face. She lets out a deep sigh, and finally, she begins to sing in a sweet and angelic voice.
Yuri stopped playing his guitar as he looked on in shock, never knowing how amazing her singing voice really was. The crowd around them looked on in shock top, suddenly taking interest. This was it. Yuri knew what he had to do. And as he smiled, he began to play along on his guitar.
The crowd loved it. They began to cheer the two on, forming a thick circle of people around them. Mr. Hamilton and his right-hand man arrive in on the scene, but are unable to get through the thick crowd surrounding Yuri and Miku. Yuri and Miku continued their performance, as the crowd continued to cheer them on. Even Mr. Hamilton’s right-hand man began to cheer them on himself, as Mr. Hamilton sighs, puffing out a cloud of smoke in the process.
Yuri realized that he had done it. He was finally able to get a taste of the stardom that he had been seeking for a long time. Their performance ended, as the crowd around them screamed and cheered them on. Yuri looked at Miku, and she looked and him, and they couldn’t help but smile.
Yuri began to notice Mr. Hamilton in the distance, realizing that this time, it was really over. Mr. Hamilton finally makes his way through the slowly diminishing crowd, cuffs still held in hand, as he begins to approach Yuri. Yuri sighs sadly, as he turns his head to Miku.
Yuri: Well, I guess this is it.
A small frown forms on Miku’s face.
Hatsune Miku: Yeah, I guess you’re right.
Mr. Hamilton arrives in front of Yuri, as Yuri holds his hands out in front of him. The man puts the cuffs on him, as he takes another drag and puffs out the smoke.
Mr. Hamilton: You put one hell of a performance, kid. But, at the end of the day, you still broke the law. I’d say that, with the price of the stolen property, that makes up about a year’s worth of jail time. C’mon, kid. We’re taking you back to the station.
Yuri: Wait. Before I go, can I at least say goodbye.
Mr. Hamilton sighs.
Mr. Hamilton: Fine. But make it quick.
Yuri then turns to Miku, who still had a frown on her face. He then pick up his guitar from the floor, and hands it to her.
Yuri: Here. It’s something for you to remember me by.
Miku tilts her head curiously, as she takes the guitar in her hands.
Hatsune Miku: Really? For me?
Yuri: Mhm. Just for you.
Yuri thinks for a while, them continues speaking.
Yuri: I had a lot of fun with you. Thank you for everything.
Mr. Hamilton checks on the time and begins to speak up.
Mr. Hamilton: Time’s up, kid. It’s time to go.
Mr. Hamilton puts a hand behind Yuri’s back, as he prepares to take him to the police car. Miku looks on as they begin taking him away, a somber look on her face. She begins to speak up.
Hatsune Miku: Will I ever see you again?
As Yuri is marched down, he looks back at Miku, a wide grin on his face.
Yuri: Yeah. I’ll come back one day. I promise.
With that, Miku smiles as Yuri is brought to the police car, and on his way to the station.
Days pass, as Hatsune Miku had been returned to the store she had been originally stolen from. She stood behind the display window, which was now fixed, eyes closed, and with Yuri’s guitar strapped around her. She couldn’t help but smile softly one last time, remembering the good times she had spent with that boy. She hoped that she would be able to see him one day.
This was the story of the Stargazer.
