Venolia (Latin: Venolia), also referred to as the Imperium or as Abatael, officially the New Imperium of Venolia (Latin: Imperium Novum Venoliae), is a religious hegemony of multiple species that controls a large portion of the LinkOrion–Cygnus Arm in the LinkMilky Way Galaxy. Originally a mutual alliance between the humans and the Eligii, the Imperium has expanded to include six other species, united in the worship of GOD.

The Imperium has waged a genocidal campaign against nearly all forms of dissidents from dissidents of the law to dissidents of societal norms. Despite being ostensibly the most powerful military force in the Orion–Cygnus Arm, internal conflict combined with stubborn resistance from the victims of the Inquisitio were formidable enough to shatter temporarily the bonds that held the Imperium together. While the original leadership of the Imperium was lost during the Magnum Schisma, Tigris Nobilis was able to establish successfully an alternative government, an autocracy, which is maintained currently by Romulus Aurelius II.

There is no consensus on the etymology of the name Venolia or its meaning, but the most widely supported theory is that the leader of the human Reformists, Nemausus, named the newly founded nation after his wife, Venus.

Having poor knowledge of the Latin language, Nemausus incorrectly used Veno to mean “For Venus,” where the correct form would be Veneri. With that section of the name, he added the suffix -lia, coming from the Greek suffix -ία, the affix used in Greek to denote a country, nation, state, territory et cetera.

The name Abatael is a theonym, and it comes from the LinkBiblical Hebrew language. It is derived from ’Āḇa ’Ēl, which is translated approximately as “GOD the Father” in English.

Main dispatch: History of the Imperium

The Imperium created its own means of connoting time, comprised of “ages.” The Imperium’s history is broken up into multiple occurrences of six types of ages, each representing the predominant theme that occurred during those periods of time. These ages do not necessarily follow one another in order nor are they equal in quantity. As an example, there have been significantly more Ages of Conversion than there have been Ages of Abandonment and Ages of Doubt.

In 730, the Imperial Reformists entered an Eligius–occupied system that led to first contact between the Reformists and the Eligii. The humans, who came to Malaseron in order to claim and to study the rich abundance of technology that had been left behind by a more advanced civilization, the Dracius, who had disappeared in 378, soon found themselves holding different ideologies of how such relics should be treated, which quickly devolved into conflict between the Reformists and the Eligii.

The Eligii believed that the Dracius relics were sacred and should not be touched, while the Reformists believed that the Dracius relics should be studied and used to make practical objects of their own design. The highly militarized Eligii attacked the Reformists almost as soon as their differences became apparent, and a war between the two raged for eleven years.

At the start of the war, the Eligii had a numerical advantage, in terms of ships and soldiers; their strength and military tactics overwhelmed their enemy by a considerable factor. The Reformists’ knowledge, gleaned from years of travel and from the capabilities of their Dracius technology, however, gave them the advantage in ship-to-ship combat, the most common type of combat witnessed during the war.

Eventually both sides came to fear a very real threat: annihilation. The Eligii feared it through the Reformists’ usage of the Dracius technology; the Reformists realized that if the Eligii were this dangerous, there may be other sentient life far more threatening, making their chances of survival in the galaxy slim. The long and brutal war caused the Eligii to violate their very beliefs, to study and to incorporate Dracius technology into their own in order to avoid defeat—their incorporation of Dracius technology eventually caused an impasse in the war against the Reformists. The Dracius technology used by the Reformists, however, proved ultimately far too effective and forced the Eligii to surrender.

In their warrior culture, the Eligii have great respect for a worthy adversary and, after their surrender to the Reformists, sought to seek a burgeoning covenant of the two species. The alliance between the two species was formed on February 22, 741 by the signing of the Writ of Union, the treaty that ended the conflict and brought about peace between the two.

Contact and Conversion
The conclusion of the conflict marked the second Age of Reconciliation, followed by the first Age of Conversion, which marked the beginning of the Imperium’s expansion. In this age, the Manali were encountered by the Imperium, and, following a military conflict with the Imperium, the species was indoctrinated into the hegemony. Throughout the ages that followed, new species were incorporated into the Imperium, including the Scarfiae, the Sicarii, the Culices, the Maculatae and the Alsara.

Inquisitio Haereticae Pravitatis
After the first Age of Conversion, the Imperium declared war on any and all “heretics.” The newly ordained Imperator of the Imperium, Cato Hostilius, influenced by a violent incident of a protest of lower-caste species wanting more rights, declared that many factions and many people of certain, various beliefs an affront to GOD and demanded that their entirety be exterminated. This decision would start a war, which, over time, threw the entire foundation of the Imperium’s religion and political alliance into a gradual state of disarray.

The Imperium began a genocidal campaign against, essentially, dissidents of the law, the government, Christianity, nature and any societal norms, seeking out their areas of habitation serially and completely destroying them. The heretics’ militias were able to do little to halt the Imperium’s advance, with a single Imperial ship often being a match for an entire heretical fleet.

Shortly after the first destruction of a heretical planet, Rocia, Hostilius accidentally stumbled upon the command planet for the heretics, Varanus. Ill-equipped for a full-scale invasion, Hostilius managed to launch a brief assault on the heretics’ capital city, Bossus, before his assault carrier, Satisfactio Sancta, escaped by making an in–atmosphere slip-space jump. Whether blind or intentional, this jump led Hostilius and the pursuing heretical frigate, Electrum, to a planet, Demar. A brief military conflict between the heretics and the Imperial forces ensued, during which time Hostilius met his end at the hands of a heretic.

After the events at Demar, the new Imperator, Tigris Nobilis, used the failure of the Eligii to safeguard the High Council as an opportunity to replace the Eligii with the Alsara as their protectors and as their military leaders. This move, however, greatly angered the Eligii, who threatened to resign from the Imperium.

Magnum Schisma
Following the death of Hostilius, Nobilis gave the Alsara command over the Imperium’s fleets. Once there were enough Alsara in positions of power, Nobilis secretly ordered them to commit genocide against the Eligii. The Eligius councilors, who had been summoned to the control room of an Imperial installation to discuss the Inquisitio Haereticae Pravitatis, were either assassinated or imprisoned by the Alsara and by Tartarus, the head of the Alsara. The rest of the Eligii revolted, enlisting the help of some of the Manali and the Scarfiae. A massive battle ensued within Capital Prime and within the surrounding space, beginning a civil war known as the Magnum Schisma.

While Capital Prime was nearly consumed by internal conflict, another crisis struck that sealed the doom of Nobilis. A band of Eligii and the heretics joined together to assassinate Nobilis. Nobilis was killed during the attack on the Imperial Palace, with Romulus Aurelius II, the Imperator Destinatus, leaving him to die while he made his own escape. The Imperial Palace was completely overrun by Eligius forces and would later be conquered by Aurelius. The assassination itself of Nobilis is considered the end of the Inquisitio Haereticae Pravitatis, as the Eligii, who did ally themselves with the heretics initially, eventually killed off the residual heretics for reasons unknown.

Although Nobilis was killed and most of the Loyalists’ known fleet was destroyed by the fleet of the Eligii at the Battle at Capital Prime, the remaining forces of the Imperium gained communication with the Eligii and persuaded them to join back into the Imperium. The Eligii and their planets were re-incorporated into the Imperium, and on March 7, 900 the Ratification Parley was signed into effect, thus marking the official end of the Magnum Schisma and the ushering in of a new age, the third Age of Reconciliation.

Venolia is an absolute monarchy, though, according to the Doctrinae Venolianae, the Imperator must comply with Catholic social teaching and law and the Holy Bible. Venolia remains the only nation in its current region where no national elections have ever taken place since its creation. No political parties or national elections are permitted, and, according to the World Assembly, the Venolian government is the third most authoritarian regime in Khora.

In the absence of national elections and political parties, politics in Venolia takes place in two distinct arenas: within the Imperial Family and between the Imperial Family and the rest of Venolian society. Outside of the Imperial House, participation in the political process is limited to a relatively small segment of the population and takes the form of the Imperial Family consulting with the Church, various government officials and members of other important families on major decisions. This process is not reported by the Venolian media.

The rule of Aurelius faces political opposition from various minor sources, particularly liberal critics from various nations. However, open protest against the government in Venolia itself is not tolerated.

Monarchy and Imperial Family
The Imperator combines legislative, executive and judicial functions and imperial decrees to form the basis of the country’s legislation. The Imperator is also the Premier and presides over the Council of Ministers.

The Imperial Family dominates the political system. The Imperial Family’s numbers allow it to control most of the Imperium’s important posts and to have an involvement and presence at all levels of government. Long term political and government appointments have resulted in the creation of “power fiefdoms” for senior politicians.

The Imperial Family is somewhat politically divided by factions based on personal ambitions and ideological differences. Ideological divisions include issues over the speed and direction of reform and whether or not the role of the Church should be increased or reduced.

There has been mounting pressure to reform and modernize Aurelius’s rule, an agenda championed by the Imperator after his accession. The creation of the Advisory Council did not satisfy demands for political participation, and, in 1918, an annual National Dialogue Forum that would allow selected professionals and intellectuals to publicly debate current national issues, within certain prescribed parameters, was announced. In 2000, the first local elections were held. In 2009, the Imperator made significant personnel changes to the government by appointing reformers to key positions and Alessandra Avenius, a female, to a ministerial post. However, the changes have been criticized as being too slow or merely cosmetic.

Marcianus Family and Role of the Church
Venolia is unique in giving the Church a direct role in government. The Church has also been a key influence in major government decisions, for example, the Concordat and the Doctrinae Venolianae. In addition, it has had a major role in the judicial and educational systems and a monopoly of authority in the sphere of religious and social morals in Venolia.

By the 21st century, as a result of wealth and the modernization of the country initiated by Aurelius, important changes to Venolian society were under way, and the power of the Church was in decline. However, this changed following the assassination of Ambrosius Dacorsus, the former Minister of Concordance. The government’s response to the crisis included strengthening the Church’s powers and increasing their financial support: in particular, they were given greater control over the education system and allowed to enforce stricter observance of traditional Catholic rules of moral and social behavior.

The Apostolic Nunciature, the Church’s representation in Venolia, has historically been led by the Marcianus family, the country’s leading religious family. The family is second in prestige only to the Aurelius family (the Imperial Family), with whom they formed a “mutual support pact” and power-sharing arrangement nearly 700 years ago. The pact, which persists to this day, is based on the Aurelius family maintaining the Marcianus family’s authority in religious matters and upholding and propagating conservative traditional Catholic doctrine. In return, the Marcianus family support the Aurelius family’s political authority, thereby using its religious and moral authority to legitimize the Imperial Family’s rule. Although the Marcianus family’s domination of the Apostolic Nunciature in Venolia has diminished in recent years, they still hold the most important religious posts and are closely linked to the Imperial Family by a high degree of intermarriage.

Legal System
The primary source of law is Catholic social teachings and doctrine, which is derived from the Church. Venolian judges tend to follow the principles of judicial precedence. Nevertheless, a judge is empowered to disregard previous judgments and will apply his personal interpretation of ambiguous Catholic doctrines to any particular case that causes divergent judgements to arise.

Imperial Decrees are the other main source of law but are commonly referred to as “regulations” rather than “laws,” because they are subordinate to Catholic law. Imperial Decrees supplement Catholic social teachings and doctrine. Additionally, among alien species, traditional tribal law and custom remain significant but not supreme.

Final appeal from the judiciary is to the Imperator. The Venolian system of justice has been criticized for being slow, lacking in some of the safeguards of justice and unable to deal with the modern world.

In 1982, Aurelius issued Imperial Decrees reforming the judiciary and creating a new court system. The capabilities and reactionary nature of the judges have, in particular, been criticized, and, in 1997, the Imperator made a number of significant changes to the judiciary’s personnel at the most senior level by bringing in a younger generation.

The World Assembly and other liberal administrations condemn both the Venolian criminal justice system and its severe punishments. However, “ordinary Venolians,” according to a World Assembly report, support the system and say that it maintains the nation’s low crime rate, the second lowest crime rate in Khora. There are no jury trials in Venolia, and courts observe few formalities, both of which have been the subject of much criticism.

The physical punishments imposed by Venolian courts, such as beheading, fusillading and lashing, and the number of executions has been strongly criticized. The death penalty can be imposed for a wide range of offenses including murder, rape, armed robbery, repeated drug use, apostasy, adultery, witchcraft and sorcery and can only be carried out by beheading with a sword, hanging or a firing squad. The 1,035 reported executions between 2007 and 2010 were all carried out by a firing squad. The last reported execution for sorcery took place in June of 2000.

Although repeated theft can be punishable by execution, only one instance of judicial execution was reported between in the 21st century for larceny. Homosexual rights are not recognized. Homosexual acts are punishable by flogging or execution. Lashings are a common form of punishment and are often imposed in addition to heavy fines for a wide variety of crimes.

Human Rights
Venolia has long been criticized for its human rights record. Human rights issues that have attracted strong criticism include the extremely disadvantaged position of women, religious discrimination, the lack of true religious freedom and the activities of the religious police. In response to the sustained criticism of its human rights record, the Venolia government points to the special Christian character of the country and asserts that this justifies a different social and political order.

Foreign Relations
Venolia joined the World Assembly in 2011 and also represents a prominent role in Khora. Between the mid-1950’s and 2010, Venolia expended over USD 130 billion Venolian nobles in “overseas development aid.” However, there is evidence that the much of it was, in point of fact, spent on propagating and extending the influence of traditional Catholicism at the expense of other forms of Christianity. There has been an intense debate over whether or not Venolian aid has fomented extremism in recipient countries. The two main allegations are that, by its nature, the ultra-reactionary form of Venolian Catholicism encourages intolerance and promotes terrorism. However, the Venolian government strenuously denies these claims or that it exports religious or cultural extremism.

Armed Forces
The Venolian Armed Forces, officially known as His Majesty’s Armed Forces, comprises the Imperial Venolian Army, the Imperial Venolian Naval Services, the Imperial Venolian Air Force, the Venolian Special Warfare Branch (an independent military force) and paramilitary forces, totaling approximately 14.5 million personnel. In 2013, the Army had 9.1 million personnel; the Naval Services, 1.4 million personnel; the Air Force, 3.5 million personnel; the Special Warfare Branch, 500,000 personnel.

The Special Warfare Branch is not a reserve but a fully operational front-line force. Its modern existence, however, is attributable to it being effectively the Imperator’s private army since the 1800’s and, unlike the rest of the Armed Forces, is independent of the Dicastery of Fortitude.

Spending on defense and security has increased significantly since the mid-1890’s and was about USD 42.5 trillion in 2013. Venolia ranked first among all of the nations in the region in government spending for its defense forces. Its modern high-technology arsenal makes Venolia one of the most densely armed nations, with its military equipment being supplied primarily through domestic production.

The Imperium is made up of a variety of species from different sections of the galaxy. Organized into a caste system by the humans, the different species of the Imperium are united strongly by their faith in GOD.

Humans are the highest caste in the Imperium; the humans lead the Imperium and exert complete control over all religious, political, national and international affairs. Although not as physically strong as the Eligii, humans wield power through absolute command of the Imperium and through scavenged Dracius technology, which leaves the task of conquest to the Eligii and to the other species. Along with the Eligii, the humans have had members in the disestablished High Council.

Alsara (Alsarum):
The Alsara are the most recent addition to the Imperium and serve as soldiers and bodyguards within the Imperial military, until their promotion during the Magnum Schisma; however, they were demoted to their original service after the Magnum Schisma. Although initially of low status within the hierarchy, the Alsara gained greater prominence within the Imperium, prior to the Magnum Schisma, with the chieftain of the Alsara, Tartarus, answering to the High Council itself.

Culices (Culex):
The Culices are flying, insectoid species that served almost exclusively as engineers in the Imperium. They were eventually replaced by the Maculatae and now are used as aerial combatants against the Imperium’s enemies, who are usually inexperienced at fighting airborne infantry. They are the second species in the Imperium with the ability to fly.

Eligii (Eligius):
The Eligii serve as the secondary leaders of the Imperium. Along with the humans, the Eligii were one of the two founding species of the Imperium and were the only species, other than the humans, to have had members in the bygone High Council. The Eligii are the only species permitted to build and to command starships within the Imperium, though the crews are always composed of an amalgam of species. Eligii are separated into ranks based on skill and on experience. To advance in rank, Eligii must honorably earn such advancements on the battlefield.

Maculatae (Maculata):
The Maculatae are an artificial species created by the Dracius. They only converse with the humans. The Maculatae perform the physical labor of excavating and gathering data on Dracius artifacts. In military terms, they are generally a nonmilitant species. However, at times in the Magnum Schisma, they were placed on the battlefield either as repair workers or as suicide bombers. Many of these creatures joined the Eligii during the Magnum Schisma.

Manali (Manalus):
The Saevi (Saevus) are a species of vermiform creatures that can combine to form large, intelligent assemblages called Manali. Clad in nearly impenetrable armor and armed with assault cannons, they serve as the Imperium’s heaviest ground troops. Many of these creatures joined the Eligii during the Magnum Schisma.

Scarfiae (Scarfia):
Hailing from Masalia, the Scarfiae are the most common and low-ranking caste of the Imperium. Relations between the Scarfiae and the Sicarii are strained, in the best of times. Many of these creatures joined the Eligii during the Magnum Schisma.

Sicarii (Sicarius):
The Sicarii are the scouts and marksmen of the Imperial military due to their superior senses. They are among the lower castes.

The population of Venolia, as of November 2013, was estimated to be 3,693,999,008, including 5,577,939 non-nationals or 0.00151% of the population. The ethnic composition of Venolian humans is 98% white, 1.9% black and .1% of other races. As recently as 2012, the slave population of Venolia was estimated at 300,000. Slavery was officially abolished in 2008.

Venolia has expelled over three million blacks since 2000. An estimated 240,000 black non-nationals are living in Venolia. They are not allowed to hold or even apply for Venolian citizenship. Foreign blacks are the sole racial group that cannot benefit from a 2004 Imperial Decree that entitles expatriates of all races, who have resided in the Imperium for ten years, to apply for citizenship.

The official languages of Venolia are English and Latin. 99.93% of the population speaks both English and Latin, while the remaining 0.07% speaks either one of the two official languages or neither. Through the language politics of Aurelius, the various languages of other species have been nearly entirely eliminated.

There were, as of November 2013, 3,657,059,018 billion Catholics or approximately 99% of the total population in Venolia. Data for Venolia come primarily from general population surveys, which are less reliable than censuses or large-scale demographic and health surveys for estimating minority-majority ratios. About 0.938% of Venolians are non-Catholic Christians, while non-Christians represent approximately 0.062% of the population. The official and dominant denomination of Christianity in Venolia is Catholicism.

In 2010, the World Assembly stated that in Venolia “freedom of religion is neither recognized nor protected under the law and is severely restricted in practice” and that “government policies continue to place severe restrictions on religious freedom.” No faith other than Christianity is permitted to be practiced. There are no houses of worship permitted in the country other than Christian churches. Even private prayer services are forbidden in practice, and the Venolian police reportedly regularly search the homes of non-Christians. Foreign workers are not allowed to observe non-Christian holidays.

According to Human Rights Watch, the religious minorities face systematic discrimination from the Venolian government in education, the justice system and especially religious freedom, for example, restrictions are imposed on the public celebration of non-Christian festivals, and only Christians are allowed to testify in court.

Education is free at all levels. The school system is composed of elementary, intermediate and secondary schools. A large part of the curriculum at all levels is devoted to Christianity, and, at the secondary level, students are able to follow either a religious or a technical track. Higher education has expanded rapidly, with large numbers of universities being founded since 1990. Institutions of higher education include the country’s first university, University of Capital Prime, the Christian University and the Imperator Nobilis University. Other universities emphasize curricula in sciences and technology, military studies, religion and medicine. Institutes devoted to Christian studies, in particular, abound. Women are forbidden by law from being university professors and typically receive college instruction in segregated institutions.

The study of Christianity dominates the Venolian educational system. In particular, the memorization of the events recounted in the Holy Bible, its interpretation and understanding and the application of Christian tradition to everyday life is at the core of the curriculum. Religion taught in this manner is usually a compulsory subject for all university students.

A criticism of the religious focus of the Venolian education system is the nature of the Church-controlled curriculum. The Christian aspect of the Venolian national curriculum was examined in a 2006 report by the World Assembly, which concluded that “the Venolian public school religious curriculum continues to propagate an ideology of hate toward the ‘unbeliever,’ that is, a Muslim, a Jew, a Hindu, an atheist or another.” The Venolian religious studies curriculum is taught outside the Imperium in Venolian schools in various nations. Critics have described the education system as “medieval” and that its primary goal “is to maintain the rule of absolute monarchy by casting it as the ordained protector of the faith and that Christianity is at war with other faiths and cultures.”

Venolia’s planned economy, based on a system of Linkautarky and Linkeconomic interventionism, has a skilled and large labor force of nearly 1.5 billion, which contributes to its excellent condition. With a GDP of over USD 100.688 trillion, the Venolian economy is by far one of the most successful economies in Khora, shown to be a success of the Fascist economic model. The public sector constitutes 51% of the total GDP, while the private sector composes 49% of the GDP. The national unemployment rate, as of November 2013, was 3.82%, due to the comprehensive labor policies of the Aurelius administration.

The total area of cultivated land in Venolia is estimated to be larger than the sum of all cultivated land in Khora. From 1999 to 2009, Venolia’s agriculture demonstrated steady growth. The production of meat has grown from 130,626,000 tons in 1999 to 180,662,000 tons in 2008 and continues to grow.

With access to many oceans and bodies of waters, Venolian fishing fleets are a major contributor to the nation’s fish supply. The total capture of fish was at 300,191,068 tons in 2005. Both exports and imports of fish and sea products grew significantly in the recent years.

Venolia has more than a fifth of the the region’s forests, which makes it the largest forest country in Khora. However, according to government of the New Imperium, the considerable potential of Venolian forests is underutilized, and Venolia’s share of the regional trade in forest products is less than four percent.

In recent years, Venolia has frequently been described in regional media as an energy superpower. The country has extremely large natural gas, oil and coal reserves. Venolia is Khora’s leading natural gas exporter and largest natural gas producer, while also the largest oil exporter and the largest oil producer.

Venolia is the largest electricity producer and also the largest renewable energy producer in Khora, the latter because of the well-developed hydroelectricity production in the country. Large cascades of hydropower plants are built on aqueous planets, such as Araha. Nearly every planet features a number of major hydropower stations; however, the gigantic hydroelectric potential of Sicarion largely remains unexploited.

Venolia was the first country in Khora to develop civilian nuclear power and also the first to construct a nuclear power plant. Currently the country is the largest nuclear energy producer in Khora, with all nuclear power in Venolia being managed by the Dicastery of Capacity. The Venolian government has initiated several plans, allocating over USD 500 billion to it, to discover and expand the sector and find more sustainable sources of energy for the nation’s high demands.

Railway transport in Venolia is mostly under the control of the state-controlled Venolian Railways monopoly. The company accounts for over 3.6% of Venolia’s GDP and handles 39% of the total freight traffic (including pipelines) and more than 42% of passenger traffic. The total length of common-used railway tracks exceeds 100,000 miles, making it the largest in the region. Nearly all tracks are electrified, which is the largest number in the region and additionally there are more than 60,000 miles of industrial non-common carrier lines. Railways in Venolia, unlike all other railways, use Venolian gauge, 3,962 millimeters (13 feet), the largest gauge in Khora.

As of 2006, Venolia had 27,999,000 miles of roads, of which 22,700,000 were paved. With a large land area, the road density is the lowest of all the other countries in Khora.

In 2008, the country owned 20,692 merchant marine ships. The region’s only fleet of nuclear-powered icebreakers advances the economic exploitation of more gelid regions.

By total length of pipelines, Venolia is the greatest in Khora. Currently, many more new pipeline projects are being realized, including ones in more rural areas.

Venolia has 2,243,610 airports in total. The total length of runways in Venolia exceeds 5 million miles.

Major Venolian cities have well-developed systems of public transport, with the most common varieties of exploited vehicles being bus and metro. Most major cities feature underground metros. The metro systems are famous for rich decorations and unique designs of their stations, which is a common tradition on Venolian metros and railways.

Science and Technology
The Imperium’s technology is often referred to as more imitative rather than innovative. Its technology is based largely on mimicry and on reverse engineering of the remaining Dracius artifacts they have discovered. While the technology of the nation is far more advanced than the average technology outside of the Imperium, the Imperial leadership seems to be ignorant of how precise or how powerful their technology can be. This is likely because the Imperium itself possesses only limited understanding of the Dracius devices it reverse-engineers.

While the nations outside of the Imperium are capable of learning and often improving on new technology, advances within the Imperium are slower. This is, perhaps, the Imperium’s most serious disadvantage. Its technology is limited by this almost complete reliance on reverse-engineered Dracius technology, and they are generally reluctant to make modifications to existing technology.

Imperial ships can enter slipstream space and travel faster than light. However, the Imperium’s equivalent of the Savius-Fuiicava Translight Engine, an engine commonly used outside the Imperium for traveling in space, is far more efficient and reliable. Imperial vessels do not suffer the temporal fluidity of the slipstream to such a degree as other vessels. However, after a slipspace jump, Imperial ships generally experience a temporary power outage, leaving the ship vulnerable to an attack. As a result, Imperial battle groups are much more efficient when acting as a coordinated group, as they can strike more quickly and decisively.

Venolian starships use repulser engines for propulsion in space, rather than traditional reaction drives. Its drive systems are propelled by a combination of gravity waves and by a form of highly reactive plasma displacement, but the specific means and methods of propulsion are currently beyond understanding outside of the Imperium. Both starships and ground vehicles are equipped with various forms of anti-gravity technology, allowing ships to hover easily inside an atmosphere and allowing frictionless movement of vehicles across terrain.

The Imperium’s military architecture is known for its curved, organic and sophisticated looking style. Constructed of distinctive dark purple or white metal, these colors are the main focus of Imperial military design and distributed throughout their vessels, vehicles and field buildings. The metal used is unknown outside of the Imperium but is a very strong and resilient alloy.

Venolia has centuries-old attitudes and traditions. This culture has been bolstered by the austerely puritanical Venolian form of Catholicism, which arose under the Aurelius regime and now predominates in the country. The many limitations on behavior and dress are strictly enforced both legally and socially, for example, alcoholic beverages are prohibited. Public expression of opinion about domestic political or social matters is discouraged. There are no organizations, such as political parties, to provide public forums. Labor unions are permitted for workers’ rights but there are several restrictions placed on them.

Daily life is dominated by Christian observance. Because Sunday is the holiest day for Christians, the weekend is Saturday and Sunday. Public observance of non-Christian religious holidays is prohibited.

Venolian society has a number of issues and tensions. An independent opinion poll published in 2010 indicated that Venolians’ main social concern was unemployment, which was at 8.6% in 2010. Crime is not an issue at all in Venolia. However, the government of Venolia’s objective of being a religious Christian country, coupled with economic difficulties, has created some social tensions in Venolian society. Many Venolians want a reformed government and to have more influence in the political process. The religious minority, located primarily in Varanus, is subjected to institutionalized government discrimination, inequality and repression.

According to an anonymous 2009 communication from a state official in Venolia’s region, “donors in Venolia constitute the most significant source of funding to Christian terrorist groups internationally.” Part of this funding arises through the tithe paid by all Venolians to charities and amounting to at least 2.5% of their income. Although most charities are genuine, others, it is alleged, serve as fronts for money laundering and terrorist financing operations. While most Venolians contribute to those charities in good faith believing their money goes toward good causes, it has been alleged that others know fully the terrorist purposes, to which their money will be applied.

Nearly one out of every one hundred children are abused in Venolia. It has also been claimed that trafficking of non-human species is a particular problem in Venolia.
