Griffindor's 13th Fortnightly Update

This dispatch was originally sent as a Regional Telegram on February 26th, 2024:

Greetings, my fellow South Pacificans!

It has been 16 days since my last Fortnightly Briefing! Apologies for the delay; traveling for a job interview took a bit longer than expected, and the EMPs from N-Day proved too much for my Telegram system to handle! :P The region has had a flurry of activity the last couple of weeks! Now, without further ado, it is time for another fortnightly briefing!

~~~~
First: The Assembly has been doing its job, debating and voting on the issues the region faces.
We first come onto the ongoing discussion over who leads the South Pacific Special Forces (SPSF) and whether the SPSF should restrict membership to only SPSF members (disallowing any other membership in any other military). The first vote on this failed, discussion resumed, and a slightly modified bill emerged, which has now been put to vote. This vote, too, at the time of writing, is projected to fail, but we are still very early in the voting process. Stay tuned!
The next proposal we are tracking is our discussion of moving Delegate elections to Instant Runoff Voting procedures rather than the current Approval Voting procedures. Debate on this topic appears to have stalled. The most recent debate moved away from changing election methods and instead suggested allowing ballot editing to be introduced. Stay tuned to find out if the debate restarts or if anything comes out of it!
Last up for Assembly business; the Assembly did indeed confirm the following individuals that Prime Minister Drew Durrnil appointed to the Cabinet:
    Sporaltryus/ProfessorHenn as the Minister of Foreign Affairs
    PenguinPies/Penguin as the Minister of Culture
    Ikaranara/Flaming as the Minister of Roleplay
    Sir Zanny as the Minister of On-Site Events (MOOSE)
Good luck to the new Cabinet!
Second: Prime Minister Drew Durrnil introduced their initial Cabinet's agenda for the upcoming term.
You can view the agenda here: https://thesouthpacific.org/t/office-of-the-cabinet/90/145
What? Do you want me to summarize it for you, too? I'm a simple public servant, not an AI machine! ;)
Third: The SPSF released its mission statistics for January - they are impressive, to say the least!
Well, actually... you can view it here: https://thesouthpacific.org/t/january-2024-spsf-service-report/5112
Fourth: The High Court is once again back on the clock, having been asked to consider [2403.HR] Review of the Rejection of Siberian Districts’ Citizenship Application.
The case arose after the Citizenship Committee rejected the citizenship application for Siberian Districts after the Council on Regional Security (CRS) flagged them as a security risk due to their role in the 2016 Cabinet Coup that occurred within the South Pacific, and additionally their membership in a raider organization (the Brotherhood of Malice [BoM]) at war with several allies of the South Pacific.
Siberian Districts submitted a review request to the High Court asking them to declare the rejection of citizenship unconstitutional for violating the amnesty that the Assembly granted certain former Cabinet members involved in the 2016 Cabinet Coup. Further, they assert that their membership in the BoM should not have any bearing on their application, particularly since they are not a proscribed organization.
The High Court is currently requesting testimony and evidence from the Citizenship Committee and the CRS and is deliberating internally. An opinion will likely be issued by the next Fortnightly Telegram, so stay tuned!
This case, in particular, is drawing a lot of attention from various citizens of the region, and you can (and should) follow the case here: https://thesouthpacific.org/t/2403-hr-review-of-the-rejection-of-siberian-districts-citizenship-application/5097
Fifth: Stay tuned! The March Endorsement Day Challenge is coming to a region near you!
Be on the lookout for Telegram from our fearless cake-loving former Delegate, Tepertopia/Anjo in a few days!
Sixth: Speaking of endorsements, take a moment to make sure that you are endorsing me, Ebonhand, and the other members of the Coral Guard!
.
.
The South Pacific Coral Guard (SPCG)
The South Pacific Coral Guard (SPCG) is a group of trusted nations who maintain a high-endorsement count and are one of the most crucial lines of defense against external and internal security threats alongside the Council on Regional Security (CRS).
For the safety and security of our region, we ask that all World Assembly (WA) member nations in the South Pacific endorse the members of the SPCG, as well as the Delegate. There is no requirement to do so but endorsing the SPCG and the Delegate will make those who do a SWAN Knight.
Member nations of the SPCG (Number of members: 5)
Aidenfieeld
Ebonhand
Land Without Shrimp
PenguinPies
Tepertopia
Duties and privileges of the SPCG
Member nations of the SPCG are permitted a higher Endorsement Cap than that provided for the general World Assembly membership. The current endorsement cap for SPCG members is set to be 60 less than the endorsement count of the delegate. (Currently Ebonhand at 555 endorsements)
The current endorsement cap for SPCG is 495
Link
A member of the CRS will be appointed to act as a liaison for SPCG members and, in times of emergency, SPCG members might be called upon to support or otherwise work with CRS members.
Joining the SPCG
Requirements
In order to become a member of the SPCG, one has to:
  • Have maintained Linkcitizenship for at least six consecutive months prior to the date of their application to the Coral Guard; and
  • Meet the requirements for influence and endorsements set and published by the Council on Regional Security
Process
Step 1: Ensure that you meet all the requirements listed above.
Step 2: Write up an application which provides:
  • The name of your WA nation;
  • Your history in NationStates including any aliases you are using or have previously used; and,
  • One (or several) paragraphs arguing why the Council should appoint you to this position of high trust.
Step 3: Send your application to a Linkmember of the CRS. You can do this by a variety of methods (a telegram, a private message on the forum, or a direct message on Discord).
The CRS will review your application. This can take a number of days to three weeks. The Council will likely have additional questions which they will communicate to you via the method of your application. Following a formal vote within the Council, it will decide whether to appoint you to the Coral Guard and notify the Assembly of its decision.
Please be advised that meeting the requirements does not automatically guarantee that the application will be successful. These mechanical conditions are one of several factors which the Council considers in its determination.
A few notes:
Oops! I accidentally left some cake on my nation page; please feel free to have it: 🍰
Seventh: Minister of On-Site Events (MOOSE) Sir Zanny/Trivalve beat me on Discord, but they asked me to deliver a message: SwanVision has returned and will be starting soon!
Hello all, I am glad to announce that the popular event SwanVision will be making its return. For those who don't know, SwanVision is a songwriting competition I made a few years back that went exceptionally well. If you are interested, please read this factbook:
Welcome to SwanVision!
Welcome all participants! This is SwanVision! SwanVision is THE region-wide music event of the South Pacific. You will write your own song and present on the Regional Message Board. A panel of judges will review the song if it meets the entrance criteria and then your song will be put into..... THE GAUNTLET!
Songs will be voted on through ranked voting via polls. Depending on the amount of entrants, there will three or four rounds: Starter Round 1, Start Round 2, Semifinals, and Final. The Final will have the top four entrants and the winner will be voted on. Each round of voting will be four days so SwanVision will last between 12-16 days.
When voting, you will rank the songs from first being your favourite, to last being your least favourite. The box on the left shows how votes are allocated.
12 points – 1st Favourite
10 points – 2nd Favourite
8 points – 3rd Favourite
7 points – 4th Favourite
6 points – 5th Favourite
5 points – 6th Favourite
4 points – 7th Favourite
3 points - 8th Favourite
2 points – 9th Favourite
1 point – 10th Favourite and Onwards
However, we need songs for this tournament! Compared to the first SwanVision, competitors will have more time to submit their songs. People can submit their songs starting today and the submission deadline is 7 days after the tournament starts. We hope to see great to see some great songs!
Going off that, the song can be any genre! Pop, hip-hop, country, metal, you name it! When the song is put in the Gauntlet, which is just a competitive bracket, do not worry what other type of musical genre it is put against. The songs will be voted on likeability, regardless of the genre. The songs will be voted and eliminated until will have the CROWN SWAN, the winner of the competition!
SwanVision will be run every November and May
Join the competition! We hope you have fun! This is SwanVision!
Song Criteria
Here's the criteria for your song:
  • The lyrics must be PG-13. Excessive swearing, violent/sexual content, violent/sexual references are prohibited.
  • The songwriter/artist of the song must be named.
  • The song must be put in a dispatch.
  • Only one song per nation. I repeat. One song per nation. Don't even use puppet nations to enter the competition more than once.
  • After the song is made, ping me (Sir Zanny) in the dispatch or send it to me via telegram so that I can verify it and add it to the competition.
  • Optional: The beat/tune the song is meant to be with can be included in the dispatch. This is not mandatory.
SwanVision Over The Years!
Thank you Trivalve for the wonderful idea!
Be on the lookout for Telegrams from them in the coming days!
Eighth: It seems that PenguinPies has found a computer in the prison I put them in (for spreading the heresy of loving pie) and is flexing some journalistic muscle!
Good time of day to you TSPeople! This is Penguin and I am here to bring you the first in a new series of interviews that get you to know each other. The first nation up in the hotseat is The South Afrikan Union! They have graciously agreed to do this and it was a total blast so here is what we learned!
As always if you want to participate or know more - reach out to me here or on discord and don't forget to show SKU some likes! :-)
How did you find TSP/NS?
Autism
What is your nation name in TSP? Why did you choose its name?
Well its "The South Afrikan Union” and I got the name based on the Union of South Africa in real life and the Afrikaner word for Africa, which is Afrika I think. Also cause "South African Union" was taken already
Is there any significance to South Africa for you?
Not really, Im Mexican so I don’t have any real cultural or emotional ties to South Africa as a nation
How long have you been a part of TSP?
I have some alts but my first nation was created in February 2023
What is the significance of your TSP flag?
Well, in the lore. it's meant to be designed after the prince's flag of the Dutch when they colonized South Afrika. the colors are just inverted and the blue is a lot darker. the 3 flags represent the first three Boer republics to unify into the South Afrikan union after the second Boer war ended in Boer victory. The flag itself is seen as both a sign of peace and prosperity and also a sign of colonization cause know came from the Dutch
Were you a part of any other regions before us?
No, my first nation (and South Afrikan Union) resides in only TSP.
Why did you choose TSP?
I was founded there on my First account so with South Afrikan I migrated to TSP because I was familiar with it. It was a familiar Homefront in poetic terms
What about TSP makes you want to stay here?
Very..... interesting people. Similar to me in a special sort of way. So I just kinda like it.
“Well we like you too!”
Tell us about your nation- How do you PLAY NationStates
Well we have a Republic system of Government and we mostly have a free market ecnomy with heavy taxes on the rich. We have a quite large industry (mostly in silicon valley) and most of city areas are the most rich and prosperous. Namibia and Rhodesia are the poorest regions in our nation and Botswana and South Afrika proper are the most rich
Do you participate in TSPRP?
No
What is your favorite thing about TSP?
The people, and the generally friendly environment (and the fact I can drop by the other Pacific's anytime)
What is your favorite memory of TSP?
On my first account when I kept arguing that copying money would solve inflation
What is your favorite TSP activity?
crap posting on the RMB and writing factbooks
What activity would you like to see TSP have?
Like a massive flag review or maybe someone makes a flag animation with the flags of the nations of TSP that would be cool
What do you think TSP can do differently?
Honestly, on my time being here.. uhhhhh I dunno actually. I like how it is now, I just wish some new faces would be in the government part of TSP. I'd like a new face and members for like Prime Minister, RMB mods, etc.
What are you involved in in TSP?
Mostly just talking on the RMB and factbook posting
im not active on the forums or discord (this is my first time logging in since like august). Soooo yeah. I’ve wanted to get involved into TSP politics and become like a prime minister or mod but it seems like a lot of work
It can be some work but it does have a lot of benefits to it as well!
and that answers my next question i think as well unless you would like to elaborate!
What would you like to do in TSP?
Be a good member and bring joy. Also be at least something in the government department, they need someone new up there and not just the same people
What would you like to see more of in TSP?
Less arguments and more new people
Some of your interests outside of NATIONSTATES
I enjoy reading, music, video games, history, religion, flags, coat of arms
What is your favorite color?
Blue
What is your favorite song?
Noch by Audrey Gubin
What is your favorite band?
None Really
What is your favorite book
?
Kindness for Weakness
What is your favorite movie?
End of Evangelion
What is your favorite TV show?
Neon Genesis Evangelion
What are your favorite sports teams?
Mexico or Barcelona
What are your favorite video games?
Skyrim & Fallout
What is your favorite Pie flavor?
None
This last one is blasphemy but I'll let it slide for now....
Thanks for reading and as always Be nice to each other and have a slice of pie!
Here is a throwback recipe to start off our TSPCookery series!
Welcome to TSPCookery!
This weekly column will feature recipes from my personal recipe collection and if y'all have any you want to share, send them over!! The purpose of this is to share the foods of TSP and indulge in the sharing of that which makes our bellies happy!
So with that being said the obvious first choice for the first recipe is my second favorite food: Pumpkin Pie!
Now obviously there are MANY different versions of this recipe. It's the second best pie out there so the one I use may possibly be different from the one that you are used to. And if that's the case, drop me a line and tell me what you do differently! #Sharethefood
So Starting out make sure you have everything you need BEFORE you start the oven. There is nothing worse than preheating an oven and finding out you don't have all of the necessary ingredients. For this recipe you will need about a dozen different items.
1) Pie crust
You can make your own or use a premade one. It depends on your time and experience level.
(I'll post a recipe for one of those eventually if y'all want one.) - For this posting I am going to pretend to use a premade one
2) Eggs
This recipe calls for 2 eggs. I use the Large chicken eggs from the store currently as I've no access to fresh ones but those work as well and add a better bit of flavor.
3) Pumpkin
Obvi. Now you're gonna need about 1 can of the stuff. It comes to two cups total which would be 16 ounces.
4)Salt
1/2 teaspoon (that's the small one)
5) sugar
3/4 of a cup ( if you wanna be cheeky go for the full cup)
6) Cinnamon
Now a little of this goes a LONG way - Y'all only need 1 teaspoon of this
7) ginger
1/2 teaspoon of this - you wanna use dry ginger as fresh can throw off the taste
8) clove
1/4 teaspoon
9) Evaporated milk
Now you're really going to have to read the can to make sure you're picking the right stuff. They like to put this and condensed RIGHT next to each other in the stores and it's nonsense. 1 can
10) Chocolate Chips
This is something that not many people add to their pies but I like it. You can add as much as your heart desires.
11) Chocolate Syrup
This is for after the pie has cooled down, add it to the top and love yourself
12) Whipped Cream
This is another thing you can make yourself or get the Cool Whip - I’m going to work with the Cool Whip and if there is interest I will post a recipe for whipped cream later. This is also for the top of the pie before eating.
Make sure you have a 9 inch pie pan and start preheating the oven to 425 degrees Fahrenheit (218 Celsius - not sure how international
ovens work). If using the premade pie crust follow those steps first and move on to the filling next.
Get yourself a mixing bowl and either a whisk and strong wrist or hand mixer. Crack the eggs into the bowl and beat/mix the remaining ingredients one at a time into the concoction. Now you should be mixing the dry ingredients first before adding in the evaporated milk and chocolate chips. Work that until it is smoothish and then pour it into your waiting pie crust. Add more chocolate chips to the top and then pop it into the oven. Let that hang out in there for 15 minutes.
When the first timer goes off, check the beautiful creation and reduce the oven temperature to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. ( 177 Celsius) You’ve got 45 minutes to wait while the oven is doing its thing, you can clean up the kitchen and get your life in order. To know that the pie is done, stick a toothpick or fork or something that makes a TINY mark in the center and edge of the pie. When it comes up clean, your pie is done.
Now the most important thing to remember is to let your pie REST. It needs to cool before you can dive into the deliciousness. I typically let mine sit for about 2 hours on the pie rack unless I’m using it for dinner and then it waits until whatever time I need it. The great thing about PIE is it can be made up to 48 hours beforehand and as long as it is stored properly will always be delicious.
When you’re ready to enjoy the yum, add your toppings and indulge in amazingness!
And thus concludes this recipe!
Thanks for reading and if you have anything you want to know how to make or you have a recipe of your own you want us to try, let me know on Discord, or TG and I’ll see what I can do!
As always recipe requests can be sent to me by TG here or DM on discord. Give this a try and tell us all how it went!
