SIA, Mariansatama 09/02/24 - At the beginning of February 2024, two aquaculture companies in Saarenmaa reported fish escapes, according to the Saarenmaa Fisheries Directorate. The first incident occurred on February 2, 2024, in Ruomaa area of Ruotsi-Saari Seafood, where farmed salmon weighing between 4 and 5 kilograms were escaped. The Fisheries Authority launched an investigation after receiving reports of local fishermen catching escaped salmon. The company set out nets to catch them, and as of Feb. 8, 38 escaped fish had been caught. The directorate said it plans to continue monitoring the incident and asked anglers who may have caught fish to report them with photos.

The second escape incident occurred on February 5, 2024 at Ruohla's Ruohla site in Kokarmaa. The size of the fish that escaped in the incident, according to the company, is between 2 and 3 kilograms. The company has also set nets for catching and has caught 23 farmed fish as on the evening of February 8. The directorate said it plans to follow up on the incident in a similar manner and is once again asking all anglers who catch any farmed fish to report them.

In addition, Ruohla recently issued an operational update stating that it is experiencing biological issues in the fourth quarter of 2023, including jellyfish issues affecting production and early catches at some sites.
