The poll shows the JPPL with 40.8% of the vote, followed by the centrist Coalition of Independents and the centre-right Liberal Democratic Party, which are nearly neck-and-neck with 23.2 and 21.7%, respectively. The conservative Originalist Progressive Party, and its ally, the far-left Workers’ Revolutionary Party, trail with 11.7 and 3.9%, respectively. Mel-akkan Honoured Elder Pujari Adhineta today met with his Indian counterpart, President Droupadi Murmu, to finalise a trade and freedom of movement deal between the two nations. Under the deal, visa-free and expedited travel will be permitted, and citizens of each country will be permitted to live and work in the other for as long as their passports remain valid. “This is a momentous step forward in the relations between two historic friends and allies,” said a joint statement by the two heads of state. Nonetheless, political figures including far-left leader Porata Pani criticised the deal, advocating for more protectionist policies.
