The Southern Cross is included to represent the geographic location of Australia and to tie the new design with familiar aspects of the previous iteration. An updated Commonwealth/Federation Star is featured prominently to represent the 6 federated states, capital territory and other internal/overseas territories. Green and Gold - the official colours of Australia - are used to evoke imagery of the nation's beloved beaches and forests respectively. Navy blue - one of three colours used in the Union Jack and in British Ensign Flags - is used to bridge the complex history of Australia with its ambitious future.
The white represents the arrival of snowdrops which mark one of the earliest signs of spring. The green represents the final part of spring where the leaves are unfurled and turning their greenest. The blue the return of longer daylight.
The Ebenian flag, designed by William Ware Theiss in 1947, comprises four monochromatic elements: Black for the Ceylon ebony, the first humans brought to this island of volcanic Onyx; Blue for the vast Pacific ocean surrounding our nation; White for the clouds and volcanic steam that shroud us from the cruel world; and Orange for the ever-present lava that illuminates earth, sea, and sky. The original flag is currently on permanent display in the Historical Junk Drawer in DeLancie.
This flag was made for a fictitious timeline where the foundation of the Emirate of Fraxinet in 890 marks the beginning of a second wave of Islamic conquests in France, resulting in the collapse and conquest of the Frankish kingdom around 1050, when this flag was adopted. The white pays tribute to the flag of the Umayyad Caliphate, the previous Islamic entity to have a presence in the french territory and which expanded Islamic influence across the Mediterranean, the blue and lily flower, which is just the Frankish which was modified to fit better in a circle, represent the Frankish people who were conquered and later assimilated, the crescent represents Islam, and the circle, uniting the lily flower and the crescent represents unity, harmony and order. The 5 stripes, as the white one in the middle counts as well, represents the five pillars of Islam.
Winners and Awards Last but not least, here are our winners! Let's take a moment to thank our awesome judges: Einswenn, Helisweerde and The New Nordic Union! Finally, we want to thank all the authors that have designed and submitted the astounding pieces of art we have seen! Thank you all :3 But now, here are the winners:
The Award for the Best Concept goes to... Slavatania!
“Nice flag for Australia and could also realistically be used. Nice colours, meaningful symbolism and most importantly, no Union Jack.”
The Award for the Best Colours goes to... Ardentiana!
“The colours complement each other well, with just enough contrast that you can still see it, but not too much contrast that it pops out too much.”
