Introductory
The Great Orlesian Military are the armed forces of the Orlesian State and the Great Orlesian Orator (GOO.) Lead by the current GOO. Francois S. D'Chautee and his most trusted Generals of the fabled Royales' Brigade, the Great Orlesian Military was originally formed in 1764. Back then, it was simply the Orlesian Orator's Union (OOU.) The Union was formed to overthrow the corrupt Emperor of the late Orlesian Empire, Leonard Carastotza. The Union fought against Imperial forces, and in a long, bloody, and terrible 4 years' time, they had defeated the Emperor with help of a nobleman who took up the role as General of the Union, the soon-to-be 1st Great Orlesian Orator, (GOO.) Alistair Torwin. To this day, Alistair Torwin and his followers are revered as heroes of the Commonwealth. With statues adorning the Royal Capitol, and long tales and stories of his bravery are shared amongst citizens daily. Because of this, there is a very prominent military culture within the Commonwealth, with citizens eager to sign up to fight for the glory of Orlesia. Although, military service is mandatory, so citizens will serve, eager, or otherwise.
In 1764, the Orlesian Orator's Union was formed. (OOU.) The Union was a militant revolutionary group consisting of nobles and commoners alike, all with the combined idea of overthrowing the late Orlesian Empire's Emperor, Leonard Carastotza. He was a tyrant, uncaring for his citizens needs', simply partying when they were starving. He had to be stopped, and so many able-bodied men (and some women, even if it was untraditional at the time) joined together under the banner of the Noble House of Torwin. Alistair Torwin was not the head of his house, but after ignorance and failure to understand the common peoples' plight, Alistair defied his father, and decried the Emperor publicly. Greatly boosting the Union's popularity, and image. The Emperor, proving to be even more ignorant than once thought, ignored Alistair's denouncement at first. But once Imperial spies advised him of the Union's growing militant status, the Emperor had panicked. He sent Imperial Forces to quell the upstart son of House Torwin. But what returned were the bodies of his dead soldiers. The symbol of Alistair's house adorning their bodies. This sent a message to any and all supporters of the Emperor. "You have been marked by the Union. Defy the Emperor or you will be next." - Many supporters of the Emperor had begun to show doubts after the inability to quell what was thought of as 'mongrel revolutionaries' Leonard was quoted to have said at the time. But they kept by his side as the conflict grew in ferocity. Eventually it was no longer denouncements and skirmishes, no longer a question as to who would give in first. The winner would have to exterminate the other, as 'The Final Revolution' began.
All-out war raged throughout the Orlesian Empire. With families on both sides fighting one another, chaos ensued for a time, as the revolution was violent as can be, and even though the Union was well structured and organized, the Emperor was not a bad tactician, nor a fool when it came to war. After all, Leonard Carastotza was the driving force of the Orlesian Empire's rise. A series of conflicts began, most notably the months long Battle of the Orlesi Hills, the weeks long port-siege of the Royal Capitol, and the almost year-spanning siege of the Imperial Palace, itself. Once all the conflict had settled, the Emperor lay dead, a single gunshot wound in his forehead, his guards' surrendering their weapons, not that it mattered anyway, as the Union transformed the once Empire, into the Commonwealth of Orlesian States.
Branches
The Great Orlesian Military consists of four Branches. The Orlesian Air Force (OAF), The Orlesian Ground Forces (OGF), Commonwealth State Navy (CSN), and the newly created Orlesian Solar Investigation Force (OSIF). Each Branch is controlled by The Great Orlesian Orator (GOO.) on an executive level, alongside the Orlesian High Command (OHC.) establishing a Chain of Command with each Branch in adherence to the Orator's plans. Meaning TacOps, Invasion Plans, ROEs, and Support for Ground, Naval, and Air forces can be directly controlled at the highest level, and then relayed to Officers of each Branch through advanced Orlesian Communications equipment. This method of command allows for increased efficiency, but also has the drawback of Officers being unable to follow through with direct commands. As there are times in battle in which an Officer must decide in the moment, and this system can prove ineffective for sudden operations.
The Orlesian Air force (OAF) is prioritized less than the Commonwealth State Navy, but has still proven time after time, to be invaluable when it comes to ground-force-engagements (GFEs), the precision and speed of the Artosi Aces' is known throughout the entire continent, and when the enemy hears the soar of their engines, its typically the last thing they hear before they are blown to smithereens by the various kinds of air strikes/bombing raids sent out via nearby airbases and fortresses.
The Orlesian Ground Forces (OGF) consists primarily of the famous Royales' Brigade. The Royales' Brigade are a highly specialized, expertly trained, and biologically altered assortment of soldiers that are the very descendants of the greatest heroes of 'The Final Revolution'. From their origins during the revolution, to modern times, the Royales' Brigade has been strengthened countless times, whether it be arms improvements, harsher & stricter training regimens, or even biologically altering infants specifically for the purpose of war, and then enlisting said children into the Royales'. It's most certainly complicated in terms of morality, but the results can speak for themselves once the fighting begins. From long-range to CQC, the Royales' are fit for fighting in almost any situation. Although even they have their fair share of weaknesses, when new conflicts arise, Royales' recruits can get awfully overconfident. Said overconfidence can even spread to the minds' of Officers, resulting in poor tactical choices, or blunders that could potentially alter the tide of a conflict. Another weakness is cold climates. While there is equipment designed to assist the Royales' Brigade in harsher, colder climates, they have still proven to struggle against entrenched hostiles in said regions. Orlesian Researchers are looking for a way to get around this, so combat can be more efficient overall. That being said, the Orlesian Royales' are experts when it comes to fighting in hot climates. As they have to fight within The Barren Lands almost daily. Being entrenched and ready for combat at a moments' notice, all while being in the widely-known unfathomable heat of the Wastes. They, alongside the many foreign mercenaries within the Wastes, can prove to be a very powerful fighting force indeed.
Aside the Royales' Brigade, are the Orlesian Conscripts. They are what they sound like, mere citizens mandated to fight for Orlesia, no matter what the situation is. They receive basic training from Royales' Officers, and there has been documented accounts of exemplary battle conduct by certain Conscripts, but for the most part, they are given basic equipment, and are deigned with the task of supporting Royales' regiments however necessary. Whether it be joining them in a full-frontal assault, distracting the enemy by charging in first, or by manning artillery, vehicles, and gun emplacements for Invasion Plans/Defensive Lines. There are also records of certain Conscript battlegroups being used as 'Suicide Bombers', being strapped with grenades and sent to charge the enemy. While those records are not quite accurate, as Orlesia uses criminals and other such traitors to do those things, there have been occasions in which a Conscript just happening to run into the enemy and explode once inside their frontlines wouldn't exactly be a bad thing.
The Commonwealth State Navy (CSN) is the main military might of Orlesia. Because Artois is mostly a single landmass with surrounding islands on all sides, the State Navy must be as powerful as it can be. Especially with recent developments with The Ravenstern Order. The State Navy primarily consists of heavily upgraded designs from the days of the late Orlesian Empire. Towering, steel ships with firepower to "Rival the ages themselves!" One Admiral quoted. While this is inherently incorrect, State Ships are still powerful. Armed with varying arrays of 150-600m batteries, multiple Close-In Weapon Systems (CIWS), torpedoes, and other various weaponry dependant on ship type. From standardized Crusiers, Destroyers, and Battleships, Orlesia uses both Nuclear and Ballistic Submarines, alongside Aircraft Carriers that work in conjunction with the OAF to assist Ground Forces in invasions, naval landings, and generalized overseas defenses.
The Orlesian Solar Investigation Force has been recently developed, and further information is underway. For now, though, said information is [REDACTED].
Chain of Command
Following the events of 'The Final Revolution' measures were put into place to ensure further organization of the Commonwealth at large and its newfound military powers. While Alistair was undoubtedly a capable leader, he could not manage the entire military and the executive duties of the State in their respective forms. So he had made some of his most loyal followers, Officers of the Orlesian High Command (OHC). These Officers would be the soon to be Commanders of Orlesia, tasked with assisting the Great Orlesian Orator with military actions, both in peace time. (Preparations/Training/Supplying), and war time. (Tactical Operations/Invasion Plans/Delegating Orders to respective military Branches.) They provide a sense of structure and organization at a higher level, allowing orders to be more efficient, and also allowing the Great Orlesian Orator to focus on other duties when necessary. The current head of the OHC is Major Gen. William Forsythe, a veteran of the Brazilistani war. Tried and true, his tactics are paramount in Orlesia's recent operational successes. His current Sub-Commanders are Lt Col. Michel Du' Frémont, once an Artosi Ace fighter pilot turned Commander, and the current leader of the Royales' Brigade, Brig Gen. Rorick Ironside, a hero of the Brazilistani war, known for his bravery and courage when fighting against Brasilistani insurgents when outnumbered 10-1 in operation Firehawk.
Statistics
Every year, thousands of citizens join The Great Orlesian Military. From volunteers looking to have a chance at being a part of the Royales' Brigade, to those who are placed into the Conscripts Brigades for their mandatory service. To even foreign mercenaries looking to serve Orlesia permanently, and lay down their contractual ways. Orlesia has 1 Million active OGF personnel, 1 Million active CSN personnel, and 500,000 active OAF personnel. In terms of inactive personnel, the OGF has 500,000 inactive units, the CSN has 600,000 inactive units, and the OAF has 300,000 inactive units. The remaining 100,000 are members of the Orlesian Solar Investigation Force, and information regarding said individuals is currently [REDACTED]. Men and women both serve in the Great Orlesian Military, as well as some foreigners, but foreigners (Non-Mercenaries) are always deployed as part of the Conscripts' Brigade.
