Main article: Etymology of the Tramontane
The name “Berghelden” was a term from Old Flandronian used to describe the people from the northwest of Flandronia. Berghelden means “mountain incline”, the modern Flandronian word being “berghelling”. The reason for the name was the location of many Berghelden homesteads; being from the northwest, where a mountain range runs through Flandronia, Berghelden settlements were often constructed on the slopes of mountains. As Old Flandronian evolved linguistically, Berghelden remained the name for the northwest mountain people, while the word for “mountain incline” continued to evolve.
“Byrkeld” is the Bergheld-language version of the term Berghelden, gained through increased contact with Flandronians in the period preceding the Protestant Reformation. The Byrkeld people did not originally have a name for themselves as a distinct group, instead referring to themselves as “Flaamsk”, the Bergheld-language version of “Flandronian”.
The term “Tramontane” originated in later Spereidian descriptions of the Confederated Kingdoms after the Protestant Reformation, then a series of separate settlements. When Flandronians were asked about the Byrkeld people, they replied that the Byrkeld had fled to “the other side of the mountains”. The Spereidians then began using the term “tramontane” to describe the Byrkeld, meaning “living beyond or on the far side of a mountain range”. Over time, Tramontane became the standard Albion name for the Byrkeld. “The Tramontane” is the common name for the region and the nation within the region.
