Information for World Assembly Voters: Repeal: "Preventing Identity Theft"

Information for World Assembly Voters
Please find below another volume of the Information For World Assembly Voters program.

Our Vote recommendation: FOR

Resolution Overview:
This proposal seeks to repeal GA#576, a resolution to prevent identity theft in member nations. The repeal argues that, because the target requires member states pay "the total sum of losses [from identity theft] to the victim" yet it doesn't have a provision to allow nations to apply for funds from the World Assembly to help cover these costs, GA#576 unreasonably drains member states of funds, especially "due to the multitude of phishing and credit card scams that occur on a daily basis[.]"

Ministry Analysis:
This proposal would repeal an unfair, and potentially unsustainable, process of compensating for identity theft. The target requires member states to spend a significant amount of money on identity theft compensations; money that could have been used instead to address some of the pressing issues facing the nations. The current system also disproportionately harms poorer governments who would struggle to pay for the costs of identity theft, forcing them to either raise taxes or cut other government programs that help their populations. Additionally, a replacement for GA#576 is currently in the works, so the General Assembly will hopefully implement another, less-flawed resolution to prevent identity theft after this proposal passes. Therefore, the Ministry of World Assembly Affairs recommends a vote FOR this resolution.
