Shūgo-Class Escort Frigate
The Shūgo class is a class of guided-missile frigates as part of the Shiraishōwan Navy "Guided Missile Navy", the warships were designed in the mid-1980s as general-purpose escort vessels inexpensive enough to be bought in large numbers to replace Ryuna Crisis-era destroyers and complement 1960s-era frigates. The class is intended to protect amphibious landing forces, merchant convoys from aircraft and submarine threat, supply and replenishment groups, battleship-centred surface outer-layer screening action groups, aircraft carrier battle groups/strike groups screening ship and patrolling blue-water coasts. The retired vessels were either mothballed or transferred to other navies for continued service.
