History of Euthrasia - General Overview
Early HistoryErreutia would fight in many wars across the continent, being victorious in the majority of them. It became well known for being a nation of disciplined warriors and refined social culture. Of course, the disconnect between the ruling class and the linguistically distinct peasant class was evident for centuries, but a delicate balance of local rulership and governance from the King or Queen with a supposed divine mandate kept the state intact for a long period of time. When that balance of power between the ruling class and the peasants became tipped too far in one side's favor, it often ended in civil wars that maintained the status quo. Still, a culture of rebellion and anti-establishment sentiments took hold among the population of the peasant class.
The 1871 Revolution
Caused by food shortages and ever increasing taxation of the peasant class, in April 1871 a mass popular revolution occurred in the Empire that temporarily overthrew the Erreutian royal family. During this time a constitution guaranteeing human rights and democratic institutions of governance was enacted, along with progressive policies of land reform and citizenship. A popular revolutionary army was also created, known as the Revolutionary Guard. The Guard initially was successful at suppressing royalist and noble attempts to restore the King's power. It was, however, defeated in a series of large battles with the loyal and disciplined Royal Army of Erreutia. The Royal Army consistently was outnumbered by its enemies in battle, but the elite trained-from-youth soldiers often significantly outmatched the untrained peasant militias of the Revolutionary Guard. In December of 1871, the Royal Army marched into the capital city and put the King and his family back in charge of the country. The constitution, along with the democratic legislature known as the National People's Council was abolished, and serfdom re-established en-masse across the empire.
The Great War (1909-1917)
In 1909, a large-scale conflict erupted across the continent with various alliances and nations vying for control. Erreutia participated on a large scale in the conflict, but was in an odd position. The nations of the world were beginning to experiment with more advanced weapons of war like machine guns, airplanes, and chemical warfare. Alongside Erreutia's outdated doctrine for fighting wars, it was unsuited to fight in new shock-warfare tactical conflicts and was outmatched by its opponents. Euthrasians were conscripted on a large scale to fight for the desperate defense of the nation. Many of these soldiers, however, were very dissatisfied with the ruling class of the nation and viewed the war as a pointless act for the royal family to gain more control over the Euthrasians. Being commanded by Royal Officers, who originated from Erreutian noble houses did not soothe these concerns either, as they often sent Euthrasian soldiers on suicide missions against the enemy.
In a huge display of defiance, in 1917, an estimated 2/3rds of the Erreutian Army, which consisted mainly of Euthrasian soldiers, deserted and returned to their homes. This led to the enemy forces sweeping through the empire and achieving total victory. At the peace conference, Erreutia was heavily punished in the treaty, and was forced to pay large reparations to the victorious nations.
Fascist Period (1918-1920)
Due to the harsh conditions of the Great War's peace treaty, Erreutia went through a deep economic collapse in 1918. Many in the empire went hungry and demanded action. Political unrest was at an all-time high, with groups like the communist Workers Emancipation Party and the fascist National Fatherland Front gaining significant support and clashing in street brawls regularly. The conflict between these groups eventually culminated in the 1918 Coup, where the National Fatherland Front seized control of the Erreutian government and founded the National State of Erreutia.
The largest goal of the National Fatherland Front (NFL) was the assimilation of Euthrasians and Erreutians into one united culture and ethnolinguistic group. However, the means in which they attempted to do this were totalitarian in nature. Total surveillance of the population began, as it was important to the NFL to suppress Euthrasian resistance to the new assimilation policies. Alongside this was the adoption of a neo-Euthrasian language to bridge the gap between the two social groups that was exclusively used in official matters. Many public services such as transportation and healthcare were privatized as well, and would be managed by Erreutian oligarchs.
Eventually, many Euthrasians became tired of the total police state Erreutia had become, and demanded free elections to commence. They also were extremely alienated with the horrible working conditions they were subject to in creating a new "paradise" for Erreutians.
The 1920 Revolution
In 1920, the increasingly popular Workers Emancipation Party led by Vladimir Volovsky was successful in a revolution against the NFL, and seized control of production and government in Erreutia. The National State of Erreutia was dissolved, and the Socialist Republic of Euthrasia was founded. A constitution guaranteeing rights to basic necessities and rights was enacted, and all land in the Republic was nationalized and given to regional councils for democratic management. Much of the Erreutian Army, however, was still controlled by the NFL, and a counter-coup was attempted soon after the revolution. The newly reformed Revolutionary Guard, however, was able to turn back the fascists at the Battle of Hindigrad, being commanded by Volovsky himself. The people of the city voted to rename it in his honor and to commend the victory, and henceforth has been known as Volovgrad.
Not every part of the country was controlled by the WEP. The NFL had managed to take back many portions of the country. For 3 bloody years, the Socialist Republic of Euthrasia and the National Fatherland Front engaged in a horrific civil war. The NFL committed unspeakable atrocities during their campaign against the Euthrasian government. Eventually, the NFL became nothing more than a guerilla movement operating out of the dense forests in the south of Euthrasia, and rarely engaged with the Revolutionary Guard or the newly formed Euthrasian Red Army.
In December 1923, it was declared that the Euthrasian Revolutionary War was over, and that the Euthrasians would forever have sovereignty. Erreutians were encouraged to join the regional communes and rebuild the land as equals to the Euthrasians. Many fled the country, but others remained to bury the horrors of the past together with the Euthrasian people.
