Todros Mavisadani, known professionally Travis Mavis, is a Crossoverian politician who served as the 7th President of Crossoveria from 2007 to 2020. Mavis had an extensive and continuous 25 year long political career, which he began by becoming the Governor of St. Arteen and Armin's Land, and then becoming the mayor of Assateague.

Born in 1953 in what is now St. Arteen and Armin's Land, Mavisadani financed the popular 1981 Coup, in which Marie BonAztire overthrew Farrokh Daikutt whom the people blamed for corruption in the country. After she took over, Mavisadani became a loyal companion of BonAztire and became a popular figure among Crossoverians. Mavisadani didn't start his political career until 1997, when he was appointed Governor of his home province. He then became the Mayor of Assateague, Crossoveria's largest city. Mavisadani considered himself as a populist, but was disliked by several Crossoverians for his conservative and authoritarian policies, but the government supporting him. This helped him win a sham Presidential election in 2007. Mavisadani would later take the name Travis Mavis.

During his 13-yearlong Presidency, Mavis was a controversial figure in both Crossoveria and internationally, with criticism focused on his disregard for human and anthro rights, the latter made worse following the passage of the Appropriate Animal Attire Act in 2010. In 2011 mass demonstrations against the regime were severely cracked down on by the ACE as part of the Arab Spring. In response, Mavis convinced Supreme Leader Marie BonAztire to outlaw Presidential term limits and elections. Outside Crossoveria, Mavis was both praised and criticized by world leaders, He strengthened ties with Iran and Venezuela, forming the "Axis of Unity" with the presidents of both countries. His tenure also saw an increase in interventions in Middle Eastern conflicts, including civil wars in Syria, Libya, and Yemen.

In December 2019, after massive protests hit the streets of Crossoveripolis, BonAztire announced that the 5-year election cycle would return through emergency elections, with Mavis leaving the position a month later in January 2020. However Mavis continued to serve in politics, until in March 2022 he made an announcement that he was officially retiring from politics altogether, inviting celebrations in the streets of Crossoveripolis.

Early Life

Travis Mavis was born Todros Mavisadani to a wealthy family in Arcadia, St. Arteen and Armin's Land. His father, Ulysses, was a successful lawyer, and his mother, Margo, was a religious teacher at a Susan, a Hefflist place of worship.

Mavisadani, who was the only child, grew up in the suburban districts of Arcadia. He attended the local school in Arcadia, where he was widely popular among his classmates. People who grew up with him said that he was adventurous, and that he loved to play outdoors. Some people even said he "forgot about his childhood entirely in his adulthood." Mavisadani was also known as one of the smartest kids in his classes, and his teachers would praise him.

When Mavisadani was a teen, his father started to get his son to follow into his footsteps in becoming a lawyer. At first, Todros was interested, seeing that he had been fanatic about law. He attended the University of Crossoveripolis, which was a very prestigious university to be in during the 1970's. Mavisadani studied there for 6 years before graduating, and returned to his home province to share the good news to his parents. However, at the time, Crossoveria began to suffer an economic recession, and his mother lost her job to a fundamentalist scholar who was loyal to the government. Mavisadani grew increasingly concerned for both his family's and country's finances.

Rise in Politics

In 1981, Mavisadani heard that a woman named Marie BonAztire was advocating for the overthrow of the sitting Supreme Leader Farrokh Daikutt. Mavisadani had disliked Daikutt due to the corruption under his regime. BonAztire's advocacy against Daikutt was very popular among the populace, and Mavisidani specifically. He even met BonAztire personally and said that he would finance her coup. On December 16, 1981, the coup succeeded, Daikutt was deposed and fled, and BonAztire rose to power as the country's third Supreme Leader. Mavisadani was hired to be her aide, which he served for 16 years. During those years, he served as a part time representative of BonAztire, traveling across the country and talking with locals. At first BonAztire was widely popular, but after she started sending her military to fight alongside Iran in their war with Iraq, people started to criticize BonAztire.

Mavisadani thought that critics would bring unfavorable fervor to the people so that the new regime would feel threatened, so he helped BonAztire implement harsh penalties to detractors, bringing the first of BonAztire's oppressive tactics to the test.

In 1997, Mavisadani decided to try his hand on politics, which BonAztire accepted. Joining the Krona Party since they shared many of his conservative views, he got his stratum to political fame by becoming the Senator to his home province: St. Arteen and Armin's Land. He governed the province authoritatively and conservatively for 6 years, raising their economy while sticking to traditional governing styles. Under Mavisadani's governance, St. Arteen and Armin's Land's police forces cracked down on any freedom of speech that would even slightly criticize the Supreme Leader or President. People thought that Mavisadani was governing with a dictatorial style, but the government, specifically Marie BonAztire, backed him. When protests against Mavisadani erupted in 1999, BonAztire ordered a huge crackdown from the ACE.

By the time his term was up in 2003, he was strongly hated by citizens of St. Arteen and Armin's Land, who had been happy he had finally left. However, two months later, he became the Mayor of Assateague, Crossoveria's largest city. He worked to make the city clean of crime and poverty by further building apartment complexes that could house all the citizens as well as cracking down on criminals and felons. Some people disagreed with Mavisadani's hardline stance on crime, but in an interview with Crossoverian journalists in 2011, he said "if you want a country that's free of crime, that's free of the threat of danger, then you are going to have to take stern measures."

In 2006, after leaving the post for Mayor, he ran for President. With his Krona Party, Mavisadani wished to convert Crossoveria into a fully conservative nation. Mavisadani also wanted to make the country much more openly religious, abiding to the customs of Hefflism. With BonAztire's backing, Mavisadani won the election. However, the other candidate, Ahmad Tokayi, won the popular vote, and many people labeled this election another "sham election". This wasn't the first one: all other Presidents won in sham elections.

Mavisadani, after being sworn in as President on 9 January 2007, decided to change his name to Travis Mavis, since "Mavis" was short for his surname and citizens with the name "Todros" are sometimes called Travis.

Presidency

Mavisadani in 2008 speaking at SabreAhr University
In the first five weeks as President, Mavis cracked down harder on not only detractors, but basically anyone who said or did anything he or BonAztire didn't like. Crossoveria went down further on the Democracy Index and Press Freedoms Index, to the point where they ranked among the worst human rights and press freedoms situations in the world. When protests erupted again in December of 2007 to protest against Crossoveria's animal transformation policy, Mavis yet again had BonAztire send in the ACE to put down the protest. This was the first of many protests that erupted during Mavis' presidency.

During a worldwide economic recession in 2008 which Crossoveria was untouched of, Mavis signed the Child Pay Act, which allowed for child workers and slaves to be paid on par with normal workers. However, as soon as the recession was finished, the Act was immediately repealed. Child workers were upset, and their parents even tried to threaten to file a lawsuit against the government, but often, it ended up with them being thrown in jail for first degree treason.

In 2010, Mavis made one of the most controversial Presidential moves ever: he passed the Appropriate Animal Attire Act, which barred the Anthro people, or anthropomorphic animals from wearing human clothing. Mavis' supporters had praised the decision, but detractors fiercely opposed it, claiming that Mavis was building a totalitarian system with the backing of the Supreme Leader. Anthropomorphic animals had also hated the law, and most anthro who were in the Krona Party had left because they thought it was going after civil liberties in Crossoveria.

and term limits, 2011

A few months after he passed that law, protests against it erupted again. Not only did protesters want Mavis out of Crossoveria, they also wanted to take down BonAztire and the government for democracy. In 2011, the biggest anti-government protest since the Crossoverian Revolution took place, with nearly 50,000 protesters taking to the streets of Assateague, the city Mavis was mayor of. The biggest ACE crackdown took place in Central Assateague, where most of the protesters were. And in response, Mavis asked Supreme Leader BonAztire to outlaw elections nationwide so that he could remain the President of Crossoveria, meeting the Supreme Leader's approval. Several Crossoverians opposed this idea, and due to this, protests against Mavis continued, despite being heavily suppressed.

Mavis was a strong supporter of censorship, which was already a dynastic problem for Crossoveria. He oversaw the blocking of YouTube and most other social media sites. Most Western media was prohibited or otherwise illegally edited so they blend in for Crossoverian customs and laws. Crossoverians and Americans alike disapproved of this policy, but the government believed Mavis was doing the right thing.

During Mavis' presidency, the list of movies, video games, and TV shows included: Straight Outta Compton, 300, The Simpson's Movie, Arctic Dogs, 1979 Revolution: Black Friday, Archer, BoJack Horseman, Arthur, Steven Universe, The Cleveland Show, and Tuca and Bertie. The movie Persepolis was condemned by Supreme Leader Marie BonAztire, and the ACE would arrest citizens for viewing the movie.

Mavis speaking in Raabestown, 2016

Internationally, Mavis became very controversial among several people from other countries. During the Arab Spring, Mavis suggested that Crossoveria cut ties with Libya, Tunisia, and Yemen since their leaders were deposed and Crossoveria had been allies with all these nations before the Arab Spring. However, he had taken a different approach on Egypt, as he believed the overthrow of Hosni Mubarak would give rise to further diplomatic relations between Crossoveria and Egypt, after 40 years of tension. As a response to the Arab Spring and the deposition of Muammar Gaddafi, Crossoveria severed all diplomatic ties with Libya. The decisions proved controversial, and there was public disagreement on whether or not what he did was exactly correct.

Demonstrations against Mavis and his actions continued throughout the decade, and crackdowns have continued to occur. Animal transformations on children were rampant, and Mavis had funded the ACE to turn cartoon children in Crossoveria into animals. 25 notable victims were also turned into animals, and Mavis had specially funded their transformations. As a result, mass emigration of cartoons in Crossoveria occurred. People would say that Mavis "had been more interested in cartoons than in dealing with actual affairs".

During his Presidency, Mavis wanted Crossoveria to adopt to a Capitalist economy. However, the Supreme Leader had refused, claiming that Capitalism would give rise to severe poverty and decreased availability to healthcare and education. Crpssoveria continued to be a Socialist nation until Waldemar Rochester became the Supreme Leader.

On June 25, 2019, Supreme Leader Marie BonAztire personally got involved in an arrest warrant to anthro businessman Buster Moon, which prompted Mavis to have BonAztire forbid all koalas from wearing human clothes in all of Crossoverian territories and land. By then, a lot of Crossoverians thought Mavis was abusing his powers in the Presidency, and wanted an end to his leadership. Four months later, a massive protest occurred in Crossoveria's capital city. Crossoverians wanted a swift end to Mavis' presidency, and were protesting all of his policies, claiming that they drove the country to totalitarianism and despair. In December, in a televised speech, the Supreme Leader said that she had understood her people's demands and announced that quick elections will occur in days time without Mavis participating. His Vice President Liana MacKrill won the Presidency in a quick sham election, and Mavis officially left his post on January 9, 2020. However, his Vice President's Presidency was short-lived, as she was dismissed by BonAztire for her political views, hours before the start of a coup de tat that deposed the Supreme Leader.

On 8 March 2022, he announced on a televised speech he was officially retiring from politics altogether. Though government officials expected a solemn and somber response, there were massive celebrations in Crossoveripolis that night.

Policies

  • Domestic Policy
Mavis adopted a conservative fanatic style of Presidency in Crossoveria. Though he didn't impose religion upon his people, he did use oppressive tactics to stifle dissent against him and the Supreme Leader. He had been directly responsible for outlawing elections, banning anthros from wearing human clothes, turning children into animals, and severely cracking down on peaceful protests. Many consider Mavis the most severe ruler due to these policies.

  • Foreign Policy
Mavis was President during the Arab Spring, which four countries saw their leaders overthrown. One of the countries was Libya, which saw the overthrow of Muammar Gaddafi in 2011. Mavisadani wanted to sever all ties with Libya, as the Jamahiriya and Crossoveria were allied. The Arab Spring also gave furthered Crossoveria's involvement in Middle Eastern conflicts, including civil wars.

  • Economic Policy
Mavis tried to implement more Capitalistic policies during his Presidency. The Supreme Leader argued that Capitalism would not benefit the people as much as Socialism already is.
